1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's love!!! By mark andreini I'm totally enamored with this series! There is always a great adventure or conflict also there is the perfect amount of romance withou affecting this storyline. It almost seems like involved sex scenes would take away from this story and it works just the way it is. There is also several different relationships going on which is fun to read about especially with all the differences in cultures between each person. I wrote a review on the first story and compared it to a Star Trek like story and where I don't know if I still agree with that as much now that it's further along but I find myself enjoying it as much as I did the show. The only thing I would change would be the length of the stories. It's seems a shame that the author doesn't put more time into a more lengthy story considering how much potential is there and ripe for the writing. I can only hope that the stories to come will longer and more in depth with the other relationships begging on the ship.I recommend to all to read these stories because they are worth it and never fail to put a smile on my face in the end.RIP Balan

Review

“This 693 page atlas offers numerous pictures of various clinical situations, assisting the clinician in his diagnosis and subsequently therapeutic decision making. A beautiful and very useful book!!”  (Vet Nurses Today, 1 October 2015)

“The authors of the first edition of the Atlas of Small Animal CT and MRIhave put together an excellent reference tool.”  (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 15 September 2015)

"...the Atlas of Small Animal CT and MRI should be a useful, comprehensive, single-source resource for specialists and specialists in training as well as anyone else interested in imaging. The atlas provides an overview of important anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of anatomic regions to complement numerous quality patient-based examples demonstrating CT and MRI imaging characteristics of normal and diseased structures in common clinical disorders. I will keep this atlas close at hand for quick reference to help with differentials in my clinical cases." Kari L. Anderson, DVM, Diplomate ACVR Professor and Section Chief, Medical Imaging Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine

"The picture material and image quality that illustrate the textbook are outstanding, and this is what makes this book so special.  Each figure in the Atlas includes a large header that identifies a specific pathology. The cross sectional images are presented in a comparative format with correlation with other diagnostic tests (eg. pathology, endoscopy, ultrasound) or 3D reconstructions, and always mention the histology or cytology results. In many cases, CT and MRI examples of a same pathology are displayed on the same page, which offers direct comparison of both CT and MRI, and give the unique opportunity to understand the pros and cons of each modality."

Julien Labruyère DVM CertVDI DipECVDI MRCVSEuropean and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic ImagingVetCT

From the Back Cover Atlas of Small Animal CT & MRI is a highly illustrated guide to the common clinical disorders of dogs and cats that are now routinely diagnosed using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. This invaluable new resource features a wealth of high-quality CT and MRI images and includes relevant radiographic, ultrasonographic, endoscopic, and gross pathology images, offering a unique approach emphasizing comparative imaging and pathologic correlation. The book is organized by anatomical region with subsections focusing on specific anatomical sites or disorders—from the head, neck, brain and spine to the thorax, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system. The accompanying text emphasizes important imaging features focusing on what is important to the diagnosis of disease. Where helpful to the imaging diagnosis, information related to disease etiopathology, non-imaging diagnostic procedures, and treatment is also included. Essential for specialists in training and qualified specialists in the fields of small animal veterinary diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, and surgery. Also of interest to those in general veterinary practice who commonly refer patients for CT and MRI examinations.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Amazing content!!!! Received a book with the cover not glued to the textblock twice in a row. By Adrian The content of the book is amazing ! It's a must have. However the quality of the books themselves I have received was poor. I have received the book the first time with the cover not glued to the book, shipped it back. I have now received a second one, which has almost issue, the spine cover is only partially glued to the textblock. It is unfortunate to see that the quality of the print was not optimal, as it is otherwise an amazing book !

A must-have for anybody interested in cross-sectional imaging in dogs and cats; high quality atlas By Dr. Silke Hecht This atlas represents a comprehensive compilation of cross-sectional (computed tomography, CT, and magnetic resonance, MR) images of normal anatomy and a wide range of pathologic conditions in dogs and cats. The book is logically structured into 6 sections (head and neck, brain, spine, thorax, abdomen and musculoskeletal system). A brief introduction and literature review at the beginning of each chapter provides an excellent and concise overview over relevant normal findings, anatomic variations, and pathologic lesions to be covered in the following imaging part. Multiple images are provided for each topic, often including both CT and MR images in various window settings and sequences, multiplanar reconstructions and 3-D volume rendered images of the same animal. Additionally, in many instances endoscopic, intra-operative or gross pathology images are provided along with CT and MR images of a given case, allowing clinical correlation. This is certainly the most comprehensive collection of normal and abnormal CT and MR images in small animal veterinary patients available to date. It does not only include examples of common diseases (e.g., nasal carcinoma or pituitary carcinoma) but also uncommon conditions cross sectional images of which are not easily found in the existing literature (e.g., effects of radiation on the brain or renal secondary parathyroidism). The book is beautifully produced, easy to follow, and the image quality is simply outstanding. Another review mentioned problems with the spine/binding - My copy is flawless, so I did not have the same experience. This atlas is a most valuable resource not only for veterinary radiologists and radiology residents but also for other specialists utilizing cross-sectional imaging (neurologist, internists, surgeons, (radiation) oncologists etc.), for private practitioners with access to CT or MRI, and for veterinary students seeking correlation between diagnostic imaging and pathologic findings. I very much enjoyed reading this book, and I would give it my highest recommendations. It is an absolute must-have for anybody interested in cross-sectional imaging in dogs and cats.

This is a MUST have for anyone using cross-sectional imaging, and definitely for all residents and diplomates using CT/MR. The book is very well organized, to the point, and has an abundance of pertinent information on most major and minor disease processes. This includes a wealth of CT/MR images, common imaging findings, anatomy (including some line drawings), common differentials, some pathophysiology, and even some supplemental images (3D reconstructions, radiographs, ultrasound, gross pathology, endoscopy including virtual colonoscopy). References at the end of the chapters make great supplemental readings for those of you taking boards. As far as quality goes - the images came out really sharp with excellent contrast and the paper feels very nice and glossy. The binding in my copy isn't perfect, but that is A ok with me. All I really care about is the quality of the images and information and I am loving this awesome book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The way clinical radiology books should be written By InKindsight Overall, this is the way clinical radiology books should be written. The information in this book is organized in the way the clinical mind thinks when analyzing a cross-sectional imaging exam. Too many radiology books are written from a pathologic classification standpoint which is of limited practical value.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommend By Asalei Very comprehensive book that covers a wide range of topics including imaging of the prostate, female reproducive organs, and transplant organs. Well-organized by organ system. Lots of images and diagrams. Very useful algorithms. Lots of practical information. Highly recommend.

I purchased this Bible previously for me and one for a grand daughter and this is one for another grand daughter. We are always suppose to stand ready to give a defense for our faith-- this Bible will help you put into words, some of the more difficult concepts that non believers want to use to excuse their disbelief and shake your faith. The articles address what is apologetics, evolution, scripture: fact vs fiction, miracles real?, Bible accurate?, are all religions the same, what about those who never hear about Christ, who are we to judge, Bible have errors, does Bible teach that all will be saved, and so much much more....And of course the study aspect of the Bible as you read the scriptures. It is nice to have a beautiful outside to your Bible, but the inside is the most important part and this is my favorite Bible of all times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The one saving grace By Sigrid Spodzieja this is the second book from this series and a little bit more serious. Kids being kids, Teenager, small kids and baby's a lot on the plate and then there is this guy for Harriett. Thought everything was over in her marriage but you have to read it yourself. And poor Grace going to so much even her greatest wish having a baby did in the beginning not what she expected .Very interesting and life like.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. humour and sadness in a great read By Jeannie Zelos THE ONE SAVING GRACE  Julie HoustonGenre: Contemporary romanceReview from Jeannie Zelos book reviewsI hadn’t read the first book, but though this one follows on from that involving the same characters, its a complete standalone and where needed the history is given so that was fine.Poor Harriet, just when everything was picking up and life was looking easy, financially better with Nick’s business going great, she finds she’s pregnant – with twins. They already have Lib who’s 17, Kit who’s 15 and baby of the family 7 year old India and now at almost 40 its time for babies once more. Harriet’s best friend Grace is finally pregnant too – she thought she was infertile but after her husband left her she fell in love again, with 24 year old Sebastian. At 15 years his senior his mother wasn’t best pleased they got together. She’s Nick’s partner's wife, and has bad history with Grace and Harriet from school, and tried for a fling with Nick in the last book. Still with me? Well, enjoy as there’s a bittersweet story to come, more tangled relationships, and a mix of humour and pathos that had me laughing one moment and on the edge of tears the next...I used to help at primary school when my kids were there, and one of the teachers said to me one day that she was very careful when she spoke to parents, as so often the dad of one was living with the mother of another child in the same class, and then the next week it could be all change again!!Its been great having a  novel involving older characters – too often it seems only the under 25’s are allowed to have romance and once past that age we’re dead to it! Not so, and I do love books like these that bring in so much reality of life, experience of being older and feel like events I've either had myself or know friends who have lived it. Its kind of easy to see how easily Harriet, staunchly anti cheating, fell into an affair with the delicious Alex. She’s feeling vulnerable, older, and unattractive after the birth of the twins, when she spends the day in practical food and milk stained comfy clothes, and there’s barely time to brush her hair never mind full make up and pressed, flattering outfits. With five kids and a home to look after, and a husband who’s abroad more than at home, its easy to see how seductive Alex came along just as she needed a boost. She pushes him away at first then kids herself that its just a kiss, but its not long before she’s in the full throes of an affair and we just know its all going to end badly. Then there’s Grace, living just down the lane with a two month old, much wanted baby, but in a run down farmhouse that she and Sebastian were going to do up – at the moment though its almost derelict, and add on that she’s suffering from post natal depression, though no-one yet recognises it and Sebastian is out of his depth. His mother, the well pressed and strong minded Amanda comes along, and takes over care of baby Jonty. Grace goes from bad to worse, and eventually they move into Amanda's home. It seems as though this gives Sebastian a reprieve, Amanda takes over the baby and Grace feels even more helpless. Usually Harriet would be there helping, and she’d have got her the help she desperately needs, but but she’s engrossed in her personal life and doesn’t realise just how bad things have got until they reach crisis point. The two friends who share everything are now so far apart they can’t see what’s happening to the other. We can see from the outside just how its all going to fall apart, and it looks a simple story but its anything but that. The friendships encompass others, there’s the school gate bitchiness, the dinner party chaos, Nick’s mother’s wedding to a Lord, which has sent her off in delusions of grandeur...Harriet always felt she wasn’t seen as good enough for Nick by Sylvia and now she’s marrying Nick’s ex girlfriend's father, and  of course as Anna will be at the wedding Harriet wants to look good. There was a lot of acrimony when Nick left Anna, even though they were still young, and Anna’s always resented Harriet – now she’s a Countess or some such and Harriet still feels inside like the council house girl she was ( yep – I was too, and somehow that feeling always stays. People aren’t openly sneering but there’s a lot of prejudiced discrimination about what sot of person you are). Its a read that takes you on a journey, covers a timespan of maybe a year – 18 months or so,  and is full of drama and tears, laughter and humour. Just when you’re feeling really sad something happens that’s funny, and just when you think things can’t get worse they they do, with events that ought to have been foreseen but weren’t. It all culminates with a bang, with revelations all round and some real surprises about some of the events, and is a crashing finish. Its got the perfect ending for me, and shows how strong true love can be.Stars: Five, a real treat, a story full of reality and sadness and yet tempered with genuine humour to lighten it. Arc supplied by author

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Recommended! By Bodicia Julie Houston gives us another book which is full of good stuff. Grace has had her baby with Seb and all seems well until she gets home and post natal depression sets in. Her nemesis from high school, Amanda, is Seb's mother and, although she is seen to be helpful at first, it quickly becomes clear she wants Grace's baby, Jonty, for herself.Hat, Grace's best friend, has given birth to twins, making her total child count five and is left alone whilst her husband Nick works hard at his business. Caught up in her own family life she doesn't see how bad Grace is becoming. Feeling neglected by her husband she gets even more distracted when blue eyed Alex slithers into her line of sight. When Nick's mother decides to marry the father of Nick's ex the tale gets another twist as his ex Anna comes back on the scene with as much determination to get her claws back into Nick as she had twenty years ago. This is the story of how giving birth impacted on the lives of two best friends very differently and the subsequent outcomes. Grace's story will resonate with many women and deals with the subject of postnatal depression really well. This book concentrates on events from Hat's point of view and is a real slice of life and all its complications.

Anatomy Studymate explains human anatomy the way it is meant to be explained, by maps and mnemonics instead of complicated pictures and long paragraphs. This book has 5 chapters covering the main regions of the body: upper limb, lower limb, thorax, abdomen & pelvis and head & neck. It includes 235 topics further divided into 131 easy to remember mnemonics, 51 maps for a simple diagrammatic view of various anatomical structures, 30 tables summarizing almost all the muscles of the human body and finally 23 summary verses for extremely important topics that couldn't fit in one of the previous 3 categories, and yet can not be ignored. This book is simply my study notes during my undergraduate study, then the exams for the master’s degree in surgery, and finally the step A exam of the membership of the royal college of surgeons (MRCS). And don’t worry, I passed them all, so you can depend on this book for a valid reason. Anatomy Studymate is not meant to replace anatomy text books. Unless coffee mate was meant to replace coffee. Think of it like a side dish, that can’t feed you alone. Yet, it adds a flavor to your meal. Ok!! Enough coffee and dinner talk. Bottom line, this book can really help you in many ways. When you study a topic for the first time, it can offer you a simpler –or sometimes deeper insights. Writing the mnemonics in your main source next to each topic is a good idea. Also during revision, I think that condensing the important topics of anatomy in 150 low-text and details-free pages can be helpful. At last during your postgraduate study, this book can be particularly helpful to remember the highlights and the hot topics, which are always the core of exams like masters, PhD and even MRCS.

PDF Ebook Life After Faith: The Case for Secular Humanism (The Terry Lectures Series), by Philip Kitcher

Although there is no shortage of recent books arguing against religion, few offer a positive alternative—how anyone might live a fulfilling life without the support of religious beliefs. This enlightening book fills the gap. Philip Kitcher constructs an original and persuasive secular perspective, one that answers human needs, recognizes the objectivity of values, and provides for the universal desire for meaningfulness.   Kitcher thoughtfully and sensitively considers how secularism can respond to the worries and challenges that all people confront, including the issue of mortality. He investigates how secular lives compare with those of people who adopt religious doctrines as literal truth, as well as those who embrace less literalistic versions of religion. Whereas religious belief has been important in past times, Kitcher concludes that evolution away from religion is now essential. He envisions the successors to religious life, where the senses of identity and community traditionally fostered by religion will instead draw on a broader range of cultural items—those provided by poets, filmmakers, musicians, artists, scientists, and others. With clarity and deep insight, Kitcher reveals the power of secular humanism to encourage fulfilling human lives built on ethical truth.

Life After Faith: The Case for Secular Humanism (The Terry Lectures Series), by Philip Kitcher

Review “This is the most philosophically sophisticated and rigorous defense of atheism in the contemporary literature. Life After Faith provides an informed and responsible statement of the secular humanist viewpoint.”—Gary Gutting, University of Notre Dame (Gary Gutting 2014-03-15)“A brilliant and complete little book. . . tremendously impressive and illuminating.”—James Wood, Harvard University (James Wood 2014-04-15)“This book is a deeper and more convincing critique of traditional religious belief than anything written by the New Atheists. Kitcher deals conscientiously with every objection to secular humanism and shows why each one fails.”—David A. Hollinger, author of After Cloven Tongues of Fire (David Hollinger 2014-05-08)“Philip Kitcher has composed the most formidable defense of the secular view of life since Dewey. Unlike almost all of contemporary atheism, Life After Faith is utterly devoid of cartoons and caricatures of religion. It is, instead, a sober and soulful book, an exemplary practice of philosophical reflection. Scrupulous in its argument, elegant in its style, humane in its spirit, it is animated by a stirring aspiration to wisdom. Even as I quarrel with it I admire it.”—Leon Wieseltier (Leon Wieseltier 2014-06-02)“Philip Kitcher takes seriously the challenge of showing how, without a belief in the transcendent, we can still live lives that are rich with meaning, because they are thoroughly committed to the pursuit of what is good and beautiful and true.”—Kwame Anthony Appiah, author of The Honor Code (Kwame Anthony Appiah 2014-06-05)“[An] elegant book . . . a persuasive case that a secular outlook on life can produce value, meaning, and solace . . . Kitcher's real strength is his sensitivity to human suffering and mortality, and the ways in which those concerns must be addressed.”—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)“A work of major erudition, clarity, and stimulating arguments . . . a welcome contribution to the current god debate. Even more importantly, it is a sophisticated, sensitive, and thought-provoking social and philosophical vision.”—Matthew Engelke, Public Books (Matthew Engelke Public Books)“Deeply thoughtful”—Adam Kirsch, New York Review of Books (Adam Kirsch New York Review of Books)‘Life After Faith raises the game…the arguments are careful and charitable to opponents, which of course only strengthens them… These matters are complex and call for patient and careful reflection. Thanks to Philip Kitcher the level of debate is improving.’—Philip Goff, TLS. (Philip Goff TLS 2015-04-17)

About the Author Philip Kitcher is John Dewey Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University. He was the first recipient of the American Philosophical Association’s Prometheus Prize for his work to expand the frontiers of science and philosophy. He is the author of many books, including most recently Deaths in Venice.

Parts of it are a little heavy on philosophical reflection and it isn't really what I thought it would be. It's not a guide on how to live without religion but a reflection on how secularism might evolve to replace some of the things that we have historically gotten from religious rituals and community. While I enjoyed this book and definitely got a lot out of it, there were times I found it a little cumbersome. It's not particularly compelling writing and I really think it will not appeal to a wide range of readers. This is a very thoughtful book and Kitcher does a good job of illuminating the issues and providing a possible way forward. It provokes and requires a lot of thinking on the part of the reader.Recommended but only for readers who are really interested in the topic.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. More to life By Hande Z There are several perspectives in the study of religious beliefs. One is to examine why we should believe in gods, or a God. Another is to examine why we should not believe. In this book, Columbia University's John Dewey Professor of Philosophy examines what religious people think they will lose if they were to exchange faith for secularism. The two main issues are: first, the claim that we would lose our values, our sense of morals - the `without God anything is permissible' argument; second, that without God our lives would be meaningless. There is a reason for this approach. Kitcher is promoting the case for secular humanism which he says begins with doubt. But one must move on from there so that it can be properly understood and lived as a rewarding way of life. Religions are founded on doctrinal statements that are accepted by the devout, and if we take those doctrines away, we find a void that may have to be filled. Secular humanism does that, and Kitcher provides a clearly written and well-reasoned case for this. Every page of this 159-page book is illuminating. Kitcher deals with the religious preoccupation with the transcendent life and makes an irrefutable argument against that belief. However, he knows that for the believers, no amount of rational argument would persuade them to abandon the idea that after this finite life, there is a better, infinite one. His gently leads the reader to look at the end of this finite life from different perspectives and thus allay fears of death and what comes thereafter. Does it bother us what had been going on 100 years before we were born? Probably not. Many of us do not even know our great-grandparents to have any special bond with them. Would the affairs of the world 100 years after we die bother us? Again probably not. Kitcher rightly points out that what bothers us about death is that we leave behind friends and family, and projects we want to complete. It bothers us that we cannot meet our tennis friends for the weekly hit, or the coffee after that. It bothers us that we would leave behind an unfinished book. `Absence from the period just after my death is poignant because so much of the stuff of my life will be continued in it. Whenever I die, people about whom I care most deeply will live on, and I should like to be there, sustaining them and being sustained by them.' But once we come to terms with that, we can come to terms with this finite life. Kitcher points the way to looking `forward to a future, to a world without you...where you will no longer be part of the show.' Kitcher shows not only that there is a firm, rational way to morality and ethics through the path of secular humanism, he also shows the contradictions and inconsistencies of establishing ethical beliefs from a religious base. Naturally, everyone who believes in God believes his God is the true God and that God wants us to live life according to his doctrines. The trouble is that that God cannot make himself universally clear and consistent. It is with the issue of the meaning of life that Kitcher is at his best. He weaves that subject seamlessly into the issue of our finite life, our living ethically without God, and shows what we need to do when our lives go awry - we `should be committed to salvage, not salvation'. He shows us that, ironically, it is the immortal life that is meaningless. It reminds us of what Seneca once said, `In hope of tomorrow, we forfeit today.' Kitcher's book is best read with Samuel Scheffler's `Death & the Afterlife', 2014 Oxford University Press.

Innovative Approach to Secular Humanism By Annette Lamb LIFE AFTER FAITH by Philip Kitcher provides a thoughtful and well-researched examination of how secularism can respond to the challenges of life.A professor of philosophy, Kitcher uses his knowledge of both religion and secularism to address an imagined critic. Chapter by chapter he skillfully engages the reader in increasingly deeper discussions of the issues and arguments surrounding the creation and justification of a meaningful life without religion. His frank and well-articulated discussion provides a positive alternative to society’s historic reliance on religion. Each chapter focuses on commonly asked questions from issues associated with mortality to the meaning in life. The author’s conversational writing style make even the most complex discussions enjoyable to read and easy to comprehend. Kitcher acknowledges the purposes that religions have traditionally served and is concerned that contemporary atheists ignore the role of religion in the lives of many humans. He skillfully explains why people are draw to religion and continue to practice rituals instilled in childhood throughout their lives. Pointing out strategies religious people use to defend their religion, he provides persuasive arguments for why religion isn’t necessary in today’s society. Kutcher states that “faith is belief that outruns the evidence available to the believer.”The author stresses that secularists can’t rule out the possibility that new evidence may be presented because throughout history humans continue to build knowledge. He notes that “soft atheism acknowledges the bare possibility of the transcendent, but regards the present assertion of any such aspect of reality as entirely unwarranted.”The book features discussions on a wide range of issues but places emphasis on the relationship between ethics and religion noting that the secular view of ethics allows for new information and change. Rather than putting religion in a negative light, the author prefers to focus on the positive. He notes that people like Mary Wollstonecraft, Jesus, and Buddha have all sparked thinking about important topics and provided a framework for developing arguments outside their connections to particular movements or religions. The author notes that these people can be “recast as initiators of a thoroughly secular conversation.”Kitcher’s innovative approach is best reflected in his discussion of how humans possess a mixture of factual beliefs and value judgements. He stresses that humans are impacted by their feelings. From the varied perspectives of early abolitionists to the impact of Dicken’s works on Victorian reader’s views on poverty, the author does an outstanding job providing detailed examples from history to help readers understand the connection between facts and feelings. He stresses that emotions often associated with religion such as joy, gratitude, respect, and awe can all be connected to ethical traditions that don’t require religion. Kitcher states that “my version of secularism places humanity at the center of value. It does not need a detour through some dim and remote transcendent. Nor does it see vivid vindication of human worth in supposing, whether literally or metaphorically, that we are children or servants of God. My naturalism conceives us as both creators and loci of value.”The author does an extraordinary job addressing abstract concepts in an accessible way. Using easy to understand examples, Kitcher walks the reader through each chapter laying out his arguments. However, this isn’t a book for beginners. Those without a background in the work of Hume, Kant, and others may momentarily feel lost. However those with a limited background in philosophy will be able to follow the author’s clear arguments and well-organized narrative. A chapter by chapter list of sources provides the reader with background information. In many cases, additional explanations are also provided.Throughout the book, Kitcher focuses on ways that secular humanists can have a fulfilling life without religion. For those readers just beginning to let go of their religion, this book may be very useful in helping them make the transition to a meaningful life without religion. For happy secular humanists like this reviewer, the book provides useful suggestions for talking with religious friends about the secular humanist perspective on life. By employing cases from literature, mathematics, and other fields, readers can easily identify examples that connect with their backgrounds and philosophies. I highly recommend this innovative approach to secular humanism.ARC NetGalley

I hope this is something that she will continue. In other books, the Author provides interesting, albeit lightweight, topics with great plotting and good twists. This book is a historical examination of adult situations, rather than a light hearted look at courtship. The reader is drawn into a modern situation with a look back at a potentially similar historical situation. The situations and resolutions are not highly predictable. The characters are well developed, interesting and likeable. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

The author had the reader switching back and forth from modern day to the 1800's. Very enjoyable, would recommend!!

Same-sex marriage is here. So what do pastors and church leaders do now? Churches are now faced with ministry dilemmas unknown to any previous generation. Hoping the problem goes away isn’t a reasonable strategy.  Christians must answer difficult questions about ministering both to couples in same-sex marriages and all the people impacted by those unions. Jeff Iorg, a seminary president and experienced pastor, has assembled some of the leading voices on a range of topics from children’s ministry to preaching to legal issues in the new marriage culture. Readers will be equipped, perhaps for the first time, with practical answers to some of these complex questions.

By Zach Barnhart Since the Supreme Court’s decision to affirm homosexual relationships as sufficient for marriage, the Church as a whole has spent a few months trying to determine next steps in how we should be responding, how to approach the issue in our own congregations, and how to hold to the gospel while loving and caring for people in the process. The Church wasn’t caught off-guard by the court’s decision, but in many cases, maybe we didn’t have all of our “ducks in a row” prior to the ruling. A pastor might know why homosexuality is sinful, but how does he communicate that to his church? How does he counsel a homosexual male or female, face-to-face, with love and grace? How does he legally prepare for the months to come? How will this affect what he does from the pulpit, in community, in counseling, and in the home? These are the questions pastors and church leaders need to wrestle with. As someone in the middle of launching and sustaining a new church plant, I have found these questions swirling around in my head as we prepare as a staff to respond to the cultural clamoring in streams of truth, obedience, love, and disciple-making. Sometimes, that’s tricky for a church to sort through, which is why Ministry in the New Marriage Culture is an excellent resource for pastors and leaders to consider these provoking questions and more with deep contemplation, and most of all, a rest in the person and work of Jesus.Ministry in the New Marriage Culture is a collection of essays written by various church leaders, many of which hailing from the Pacific area and in particular with connections to Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. This context is important; we see that we are learning from voices who at this moment are immersed in a culture of ministry that has to answer these questions on a daily basis because their location calls for it. It is encouraging to see Jeff Iorg and this team of writers partnering with pastors and leaders across the country to help them gain a better understanding for how to handle these tough situations with clarity and confidence. The book is divided into three main subheadings: Chapters 1-2 deals with biblical foundations for the new marriage culture. Chapters 3-5 address the theological implications of gospel confidence, robust ecclesiology, and positive sexual ethics. Finally, chapters 6-15 approach models for how ministry can happen in the new marriage culture. A wide variety of topics is covered here, from preaching (chapter 7) to counseling (chapters 8-9), to youth and children (10-11). Chapter 12 addresses the comparisons and contrasts between the civil rights movement and same-sex marriage. Chapters 13-15 are key for lead pastors, addressing legal and pastoral concerns. One of the big highlights from the book was Tony Merida’s chapter on preaching (chapter 7). Merida draws from John Stott’s classic example of preaching as bridge-building and applies this principle to the context of connecting the truths of the gospel to broken, hostile, or unlearned proponents of same-sex marriage. Contextualization is of primary importance, but must be done correctly. We cannot over- or under-compensate in this area. As Merida observes, “Many people today have the same vocabulary, but they are using a different dictionary” (110). It is critical, therefore, that we assume what Merida calls “biblical cluelessness” and “evangelize as you edify” (112-114). Parallel to Jesus walking with the men at Emmaus, we must be willing to patiently walk with people, preaching boldly and comprehensively, the whole counsel of God, Christ, discipleship, marriage, and so forth. We will gain no ground if we build a bridge that comes up short.Another insightful chapter was Brad Dacus’s chapter on examining and navigating legal challenges (chapter 13). Dacus, an attorney and President of the Pacific Justice Institute, provides church leaders with a lot of practical wisdom in how to prepare ourselves for the future, and also how to protect ourselves from unnecessary conflicts that could arise from this cultural redefinition of marriage. It’s definitely a chapter senior and lead pastors should be reading as they attempt to protect the flock entrusted to them.Overall, the book is very beneficial and will help Christians understand the answer to the “Now what?” phase we’re entering. Think of Ministry in the New Marriage Culture as a compass that’s helping many of us who are stuck wandering by getting back on track and pointed in the right direction.I received this book from B&H Books for this review. So what do pastors and church leaders do now?”So reads the first lines emblazoned on the back cover of this book, the latest offering from Jeff Iorg, the president of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (which, disclaimer, is also where I am studying to complete my MDiv). Dr. Iorg is the editor of this book and has assembled 15 of the leading minds either from or affiliated with the seminary in order to address both this large question and many of the other related questions that follow.Following the Introduction (chapter 1), the book is divided into three sections: Biblical Foundations for Ministry (chapters 2 & 3), Theological Foundations for Ministry (chapters 4-6), and Models and Methods for Ministry (chapters 7-15).The first section, Biblical Foundations, is a brief overview of some of the biblical teachings and principles from the Old and New Testaments on marriage and sexual ethics. The book’s point of view on the issues is the historic (or non-affirming) teaching of the church on sexual ethics in general and homosexuality in particular. These two chapters are valuable for anyone who has not done an extensive study of the subject themselves but are also not the point of the book. Those looking for exhaustive treatments will want to look elsewhere, though these chapters serve as an appropriate starting point. The Theological Foundations section covers Gospel Confidence, Ecclesiology, and Sexual Ethics. Of the three, the chapter on Ecclesiology by Rodrick Durst is a standout: it does an excellent job of bringing historical situations in the history of the church to bear on the current circumstances, is filled with encouragements to the reader, offers case studies of potential church issues, suggests practices that will be of benefit in resolving these issues, AND goes further than most of the other chapters by addressing trans* issues (a step not all of the authors take). The Models and Methods section is the bread and butter of the book and will most likely be the most helpful of all the sections to pastors and other church leaders. In particular, the Preaching chapter by Tony Merida and the Legal Challenges chapter by Jim Wilson are incredibly valuable resources. I feel the chapter on legal challenges, while not for everyone, would be worth the price of the book all by itself to church leaders for its practical advice and suggestions on ways to preemptively protect churches from possible litigation and liability.Answering Objections:But wait, some might ask: why do we need another book by fifteen cisgender, evangelical, conservative authors (who are almost all white to boot)? What could they add that is possibly worth listening to? Don’t we need more voices who don’t represent this point of view? The first part of the answer to that question is YES! We need more diversity in the conversation. I will not argue on that point. However, this book is diverse in its own way. This is a book that is not directly arguing the abstract and/or theological question of same-sex marriage. It is instead focused on the practicals–what to do–in light of the legal realities that the churches maintaining the historic teaching are faced with and is mainly addressed to those who already agree with its theological perspective. For the book’s audience, this is a necessary book. There are few resources out there (to my admittedly limited knowledge!) that perform the function this book sets out to accomplish. Is it a perfect book? No. Some chapters fall flat or come across as tone-deaf. Few will agree with every suggestion that every author makes (at least I don’t). And the book falls far short of answering every possible answer to the problems and opportunities churches will face in this arena. But while it doesn’t provide all the answers, it at least is beginning to ask the right questions and inviting the reader to answer them for themselves.5 stars out of 5

Traditionally, the idea of marriage has been one between a man and a woman. It has since been expanded to extend marriage to same-sex couples. With the recent Supreme court decision that legalizes same sex marriage, every state in the United States will have to deal with the consequences of the decision. In general, every Church will have to deal with the diverse opinions in their congregations. In view of continued controversies surrounding the biblical and theological views of homosexuality and same-sex marriage, ministry has become a lot more complex, nuanced, and sensitive. The pastor or minister will have to tread carefully the path of being accepting and caring without compromising theological truths and biblical principles. How can one be loving without being labeled legalistic or dogmatic? How do we relate with people whose views of marriage are totally different from ours? What happens when our convictions clash with the laws imposed on us? How do we relate to individuals having a sexual identity crisis? In this book, fifteen contributors from several theological seminaries have come together to help us navigate the increasingly complex ministry environment, in particular, dealing with the multi-dimensional marriage cultures. This book covers a lot of ground. Based on the conviction that "same sex marriage is wrong - on every level, in every way," the contributors seek to find ways in which they can do ministry in an increasingly liberal society. Having said that, the book is not about providing reasons why they believe SSM is wrong, but how they can relate to people who do not believe the same way as them. It is about ministry in this new marriage culture where marriage is no longer just between a man and a woman. Paul Wegner and Richard R. Melick Jr write about the biblical foundations for ministry from the Old and New Testament respectively. Wegner uses four passages in the Old Testament to show us that the Old Testament grounds us in understanding the original design of marriage. Melick Jr shows us how the city of Corinth's economic success was undermined by the spiritually corrupt society. Going into 1 Corinthians and Romans 1, there is a consistency that homosexuality comes under the same category of vices called porneia. What is needed is not simply a every-man-to-his-own-opinion, but how a Christian worldview and a properly functioning church can provide the best environment for the deepest longings of the human soul. It is not marriage as man intended but marriage as what God had originally intended that is going to be satisfying.Three essays are then written to give the theological foundations for ministry. Christopher W. Morgan and Gregory C Cochran writes about "gospel confidence" that seen from the position of the cross, we see every member as important to be cared for. The gospel connects all. They tell the story of Rosaria who pushed back against the Promise Keepers movement, but the loving response she received changed her view of things. Rodrick K. Durst believes that a robust ecclesiology of the Church will result in a community of believers who will not only contend for the faith but also offer the community hope through the transforming power of the gospel. With confessions, covenants, and catechisms, the practice of doing church together will lead to serving the society together. Adam Groza sees from a "positive sexual ethic" perspective that sex is created for a good purpose. Both genders have strengths and weaknesses and homosexuality is idolatry in itself. Instead of fighting the different orientations, recognize that both homosexuals and heterosexuals have strong tendencies toward sexual immorality. Both need repentance. The third part of the book deals with practical matters that many readers would find familiar with. Tony Merida sees the pulpit ministry as a way to mediate differing views; to build bridges; to study the biblical text; to apply the text to all marriages; and also to be prepared to bear the consequences of our preaching, especially when it irritates the dissenters. Heath Lambert believes in counseling individuals to find support within the community of love; to cultivate godly relationships with mature believers who are non-homosexuals; and to help individuals find their identity in Christ instead of their sexual orientations. Debbie Steele counsels those affected by SSM, like children of same sex parents, especially with regard to dealing with feelings of shame and guilt. Paul Kelly looks at youth ministry in the midst of "legalization and normalization of SSM in American society" and pays attention to helping youths discover their self identity; to care for them; to help them navigate the waters of discomfort; and provide hope in Christ. The key strategy is to engage continuously. Ann Iorg looks at Children's Ministry and believes that the home and the Church are crucial places where a child's sense of identity, of family, and belonging is formed. Taught well, children will grow up to let their identity in God become more important than individual rights. They learn personal growth rather than altering their worth. They learn about family. They can be taught a comprehensive curriculum. Unfortunately, some churches focus on entertainment and programs that occupy time instead of solid materials to enable them to grow spiritually. Leroy Gainey compares the new marriage cultural movement with the civil rights movement. In other words, fighting for racial equality is not the same as fighting for SSM marriage equality. Brad Dacus deals with the tricky path of "navigating legal challenges to church" where he suggests ways to write "bylaw language" and to ensure that the Church's religious doctrine does not contradict the legal wording of the laws. There are many practical issues Dacus covers. He talks about issues related to employment; to marriage applications; to Church facilities use; and other potentially tricky situations. He has suggestions on guidelines for transgenders attending church. On issues of restrooms, he says that having a Unisex restroom is often a helpful alternative. Jim L. Wilson talks about a "pastoral model for engaging community." Finally, Jeff Iorg gives a model sermon which in itself is worth the price of the book. This book is a necessary resource for churches and believers who are grappling with new ways to relate and to connect with people from all walks of life, in particular, people of different sexual orientations. In one book, we have a wide range of topics that help readers be versatile on the methods and strategies we can use. It is important to remember that we do not need to change our biblical convictions or theological perspectives just to fit the new marriage culture of our time. What we need are new strategies and creative ways to demonstrate love and acceptance. I like the wide coverage across age groups and the different ministries of the Church. There is also the continued biblical and theological grounding from all the contributors, showing readers that these are committed Christians who are also dedicated to ministering in love and compassion. If you are unsure of how to lead your Church through the increasingly complex marriage culture we are in, begin with this book.Rating: 4.75 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of B&H Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
