Bookmarked for Murder features Juanita Wills, intrepid (aka nosy) public librarian in the small town of Wyndham, Oklahoma. In this first book in the Scrappy Librarian series, Juanita takes on a dangerous mix of murder, local militias, and deep-seated racism, as she tries to get to the bottom of a hate crime that takes place in a local church. Juanita is nothing if not stubborn, whether she is pestering suspects, trying to keep a book club on track, or playing referee to the "quote wars" that inspire her staff to their own version of literary mayhem. The small-town setting is pleasantly familiar, and the story a satisfying tale of secrets unraveled and justice sought. Marion Moore Hill is the author of the Scrappy Librarian mystery series and the Deadly Past mysteries. She lives in Durant, Oklahoma.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Mark this book well By Wesley E. Johnson Marion Moore Hill's first novel is an excellent venture into the "mystery" genre and yet it defy's such a classification. It is a tidy little who-done-it that is more a story of insatiable curiosity and natural intelligence than it is of death, guns and tough guys. This is a story about a librarian who wanders, late one night on her way home from work, into the twisted world of militia hate groups and wife killers. Juanita Wills is the head librarian of the Wyndham, Oklahoma Public Library. After working quite late one night she is walking home and, while passing the Methodist Church, hears a sharp cry. At the same time she notices the front door of the church ajar she is confronted by three hooded men running out of the church. Two of the men approach her but are ordered away by the third. The frightened, but resolute Wills then enters the church and finds the comatose form of her friend, the Reverend Farris Asher lying on the floor of the sanctuary. On the wall of the sanctuary is found a crudely painted swastika and the words NIGER LUVER DOER OF DEVELS WERK. G.O.L. It is at this point that Wills is launched off into, what is for her, totally uncharted, and, as she is soon to discover, very dangerous territory. Wills is determined to track the cause of this assault and vandalism. She begins to research this case with an almost obsessive sense of curiosity that fly's in the face of direct orders from her friend, police Lt. Wayne Cleary. What Wills lacks in investigative experience she more than makes up for in what many investigators lack, the natural ability to recall seemingly insignificant items of information and relate them. She possesses an almost uncanny ability to "connect-the-dots" as it were. Ms. Hill begins her portrayal of this small Oklahoma town and its inhabitants in an almost Norman Rockwell model. This gradually degenerates, however as Wills research begins to uncover the darker side of people she thought she knew. As I proceeded through this story I began to see it almost as "News from Lake Wobegon" containing an article about the KKK. This story is certainly more a character driven than "mystery" driven in that Ms. Hill has the causation reveled about half way through the book. The "who" that is revealed in the end is quite a clever revelation and brings this excellent first novel to a surprising conclusion. A final note: do not expect a Sue Grafton or J.A. Jance or any of the other mainstream investigators. This is a different sort of character in a different sort of mystery. This novel is well worth the effort.

The mystery of who assaulted the minister, left the misspelled graffiti and where the story goes from there does not seem like a first book. The characters and plot held my interest and when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about the story. Descriptions, conversations and actions of characters fit with small town Oklahoma. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the book to students and adults.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A n Oklahoma Cozy Mystery By A Customer Who ever thinks small towns are slow in this modern world and do not have interesting, slightly odd and downright dangerous characters are in for a fast-paced read. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud, nodding with recognition of human foibles, and finally, experiencing a shiver of fear. Bookmarked for Murder by Marion Hill introduces character Juanita Wills, the town librarian who by the second page of chapter one becomes a witness to three masked men leaving the church where they have brutally attacked the minister.Wills is told by her policeman boyfriend Wayne, to leave the investigating to the police, but of course she simply waits until he is out of sight. Almost everyone in town could be or becomes a suspect in the beating and the hate filled message left in the church. From lawyer, to teacher, banker to retired military man, a high school student to politician and even the assistant librarian, they all come under Juanita's scrutiny. As she questions, tails, and inspects around town, the frequency and visciousness of telephone calls increases at her home. Instead of frightening her off, Juanita persists.Small town life is shown in an evening stroll through downtown, going door to door for donations to the Relief Agency, and everyone knowing each other, yet not really knowing what secrets are kept by the neighbors.Wills resorts to a chocolate souffle at a time of great stress. (Find Hill's own souffle recipe in cookbook "Second Helping of Murder") Juanita is able to investigate, order books for the library, keep library workers from becoming totally out of hand, help her Vietnamese neighbors who are being harrassed and even has an adopted dog. There is humor, a touch of romance and the fact that no matter how idilic the town may look, there is a militia filled with hate and violence, murder and manipulation of the community. Readers will find the outcome most satisfactory, just as Juanita finds Wayne's kisses.

“Although, your health condition may impact your everyday life, do not let it define who you are.” Lantus Solostar (insulin glargine) is used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). It is also used to treat people with type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) who need insulin to control their diabetes. In patients with type 1 diabetes, insulin glargine must be used with another type of insulin (a short-acting insulin). In patients with type 2 diabetes, insulin glargine also may be used with another type of insulin or with oral medication(s) for diabetes. Lantus Solostar (insulin glargine) is a long-acting, man-made version of human insulin. It works by replacing the insulin that is normally produced by the body and by helping move sugar from the blood into other body tissues where it is used for energy. It also stops the liver from producing more sugar. Thanks and may you have a good understanding about this drug— Lantus Solostar (insulin glargine). You may want to share this book with your family and friends who may be in need of help and would want to use this medicine. Take care, and as always, be well!

Over the past decade, an explosion of empirical research in a variety of fields has allowed us to understand human moral sensibility as a sophisticated integration of cognitive, emotional, and motivational mechanisms shaped through evolution, development, and culture. Evolutionary biologists have shown that moral cognition evolved to aid cooperation; developmental psychologists have demonstrated that the elements that underpin morality are in place much earlier than we thought; and social neuroscientists have begun to map brain circuits implicated in moral decision making. This volume offers an overview of current research on the moral brain, examining the topic from disciplinary perspectives that range from anthropology and neurophilosophy to justice and law. The contributors address the evolution of morality, considering precursors of human morality in other species as well as uniquely human adaptations. They examine motivations for morality, exploring the roles of passion, extreme sacrifice, and cooperation. They go on to consider the development of morality, from infancy to adolescence; findings on neurobiological mechanisms of moral cognition; psychopathic immorality; and the implications for justice and law of a more biological understanding of morality. These new findings may challenge our intuitions about society and justice, but they may also lead to more a humane and flexible legal system.ContributorsScott Atran, Abigail A. In this powerful book, the renowned exorcist of Rome tells of his many experiences in his ministry as an exorcist doing battle with Satan to relieve the great suffering of people in the grip of evil. The importance of the ministry to "expel demons" is clearly seen in the Gospels, from the actions of the Apostles, and from Church history. Fr. Amorth allows the reader to witness the activities of the exorcist, to experience what an exorcist sees and does. He also reveals how little modern science, psychology, and medicine can do to help those under Satan's influence, and that only the power of Christ can release them from this kind of mental, spiritual or physical suffering.

An Exorcist Tells His Story has been a European best-seller that has gone through numerous printings and editions. No other book today so thoroughly and concisely discusses the topic of exorcism.

"This is a very important book. Every pastoral leader, clergy and lay, should read it. The ministry of exorcism badly needs to be restored and Fr. Amorth's book is a significant contribution in this direction."- Ralph Martin

"Fr. Amorth tells us about his personal confrontations with the devil on hundreds of occasions. Those who deny or doubt the power of the devil will be shocked at what they find in this book." - Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J.

Fr. Gabriele Amorth is the Chief Exorcist of Rome. He has performed hundreds of exorcisms over many years.

Gabriele Amorth's revealing portrait of demonic possession and exorcism casts detailed, spiritual light on this dark area of inquiry which is fraught--more often than not--with controversy and misunderstanding. It also supplements other pertinent texts such as Father Malachi Martin's classic study HOSTAGE TO THE DEVIL, and Bob Larson's IN THE NAME OF SATAN.Fr. Amorth covers critical ground by exposing the dangers of magic and sorcery (namely spells, hexes, incantations and curses) and their ability to adversely effect a recipient individual psychologically, physically, and spiritually, even to the point of inducing demonic possession. Conversely, he details the various remedies that the Church offers to the afflicted--in the form of Sacramentals--such as blessed oil, water, and salt, that can supplement the solemn rite of exorcism, ensuring an easier liberation from the fetters of and shackles to the Devil. He also examines those tell-tale, mental and physical signs (he calls them 'negativities') that often confirm the presence of a possessing demon. Attention is also paid to the numerous forms of bizarre behaviour that the unfortunate victims of possession exhibit--both prior to and during an exorcism--and how these capital signs authenticate the source of their existential torment as evil spirit, and not merely psychophysical malady as the genesis. The author effectively concludes the book with a look at the new attitude (pastoral directives) of Vatican II toward possession, demons and--as the good Father says--'...the influence that they can exert on single individuals, on communities, on entire societies, or on events...(as)...very important...In the final analysis, Fr. Amorth's objective, straight-forward presentation of the complexities of demonic possession and exorcism facilitates a terra firma of understanding--partially unravelling the ageless mystery of good versus evil--thereby, providing a solid addition to anyone's private library on the topic.

Lewis said there are two mistakes people usually make when it comes to the devil: one is not to believe in him at all; the other is to believe in him too much.According to Father Amorth, only priests have the gift of exorcism. The problem, he points out, is that there are virtually no priests left in the Catholic Church who believe in demons or exorcisms. That's the first danger pointed out by C.S. Lewis. Even Ignatius Press, a Catholic publisher, apparently could not find a Catholic priest who believed in exorcisms because the foreword is written (reluctantly) by a priest who can only say, "I have difficulties with Fr. Amroth's [sic.] approach." He then closes his foreword with the warning, "This book needs to be read with care but with an open mind." Not much of a recommendation as forewords go. It may be that the priest writing the foreword believes in the devil, but just believes there are better ways of dealing with the devil. He doesn't say what it is about Fr. Amorth's approach that bothers him. He does say, however, "I recognize in this book the account of an intelligent and dedicated pastor who has had the courage to go where most of us fear to tread."Perhaps some caution in reading the book is wise--not that you will go wrong by reading it, but because the other peril with the devil is believing in him too much. The more some people read about demons, the more they see them . . . in everything that goes wrong. They start to live in fear, and if the devil has one great power over us, I suspect fear is his greatest weapon. If you're the type of person who reads a family medical guide and says, "Oh, I have that. I've felt that," and then reads about the next illness and says, "Oh, I might have that, too," then this isn't the book for you.Though Father Amorth doesn't describe the rites of exorcism--since they can only be performed by priests--he does offer some efficacious prayers for deliverance in an appendix and says that "Jesus gave the power to expel demons to all those who believe in him and act in his name." I'm not sure what the distinction is between exorcism and expelling, and Father Amorth doesn't clarify the matter. What Fr. Amorth does provides is numerous first-hand encounters with demonic possession. These provide examples that can help one understand the symptoms of posession in order to differentiate it from things that might simply be mental illness. And, as the foreword indicates, Fr. Amorth gives an intelligent account. This is not the account of some faith healer who sees demons under every doily. He's careful to point out that most people need psychologists, not exorcists, and that, even after an exorcism, many people still need a psychologist to deal with the trauma of their lives. Therefore, he usually works as a team member with a psychologist. He's careful not to overstep his area of expertise. He's not the type who goes around casting out "demons of drunkenness," "demons of homosexuality," and "demons of deafness" every time he runs up against someone with a problem. Some of the events he describes, however, go clearly beyond anything psychology can explain or deal with. Behavior can always be explained psychologically, but Fr. Amorth describes physical events that go beyond behavior or physical illness. What do you make of someone, for example, who vomits up a talisman in the middle of an exorcism? You could speculate that he wasn't careful enough when he was eating his Cracker Jacks the night before. But that would't explain the levitation that occurred during the exorcism . . . just before the talisman came up.

Gabriele Amorth's portrait of demonic possession and exorcism casts detailed light on this dark area of inquiry which is fraught--more often than not--with controversy and misunderstanding.Though less poetic or descriptively-gripping than the late Fr. Malachi Martin's classic study on the topic HOSTAGE TO THE DEVIL, Fr. Amorth's book manages to patch up some of the existing knowledge gaps left in the wake of several other pertinent works like Dr. M. Scott Peck's THE PEOPLE OF THE LIE (a psychiatrist's view of evil based on the case histories of his patients), and Bob Larson's IN THE NAME OF SATAN (Tales of a Protestant exorcist).Fr. Amorth covers critical, new ground by exposing the dangers of Magic and Sorcery (namely spells, hexes, incantations, and curses) and their ability to adversely affect an individual psychologically, physically, and spiritually, even to the point of inducing demonic possession.Conversely, Fr. Amorth details the various remedies that the Catholic Church offers to the afflicted--in the form of Sacramentals--such as blessed oil, water, and salt, which can be effectively applied--in conjunction with the solemn rite of exorcism--to facilitate an easier and quicker liberation from the fetters of and attachments to the Devil.Examination is also given to those tell tale, mental and physical signs (Fr. Amorth calls them 'negativities') that often confirm the presence of a possessing demon. Attention is paid to the various forms of bizarre behavior that unfortunate victims of possession exhibit--both prior to and during an exorcism--and how these capital signs authenticate the source of existential torment as evil spirit, and not merely psychophysical malady as the genesis of their suffering. The author effectively concludes the book with a look at the new attitude (pastoral directives) of Vatican II toward possession, demons, and--as Fr. Amorth says--'the influence that they can exert on single individuals, on communities, on entire societies, or on events,...(as)...very important...for Catholic doctrine.' And how, by calling attention to the ever-present danger posed by these evil entities, the Catholic Church can better assert itself--in the name of Jesus--as the leading organization with the designated spiritual authority to most effectively route the wickedness and snares of the Devil. In the final analysis, Fr. Amorth's straight-forward, no frills, 'meat and potatos' examination of demonic possession and exorcism succeeds where other fail, providing a terra firma of understanding and solid addition to anyone's private library on the topic.

After crash landing on an isolated island, the survivors, Emma and three testosterone-fueled men, begin foraging for food and water for their survival. As the weeks pass, the four develop a camaraderie that exposes their mutual attractions. Gradually, Emma emerges from her shell and she embraces her newfound sexuality while turning the tables on her sheltered past. This is definitely an erotic romance, and there are several, graphic scenes. I must admit, that while this is not my go-to genre to read, I thought I would give this genre a try. Though I personally can't compare this book with other erotic romance novels, it would seem that, with a few surprising twists, this story offers a fresh spin on the classic 'stranded on a deserted island' plot.Interwoven with unexpected humor and filled with erotic scenes, South Seas Seduction is a great escape read.

Pack your suit cases (or maybe just a sarong or nothing at all) Nothing is hotter or more erotic than life on a south sea island. How would you like to be stranded with three hunky men? Emma Labonte winds up living out every woman's fantasy, but being stranded on an island wit three men isn't all it seems. Steve, Toby and Jack may have saved her from certain death but they are after all just men with desires.Emma doesn't know much about love or sex and her husband tried to have her killed. Will they be saved from paradise? or live out their days on this island? Will she find real love? This is an erotic, sexy, steamy read..You may need a cold shower. Enjoy!

She finds herself stranded on a deserted, tropical island with three other passengers, some of the hottest men around. Sexually inexperienced, she forms a bond of friendship and trust with each man that eventually leads her to explore her sexuality in sizzling ways.Ms. Kidesu paints a lovely picture, not only of this island setting, but of the strong characters. Emma is an intelligent, fragile girl who blossoms into full womanhood and discovers how really strong she is. The trio of sexy men are a delight!

Jane Knoll doesn't realize it yet, but life is about to take a daring turn. For the past decade, Jane's been able to recapture her sense of peace after years of being bullied. By day she edits marketing jargon, and by night she watches television reruns with her gay neighbor, Larry. She's comfortable. Then, after she meets her new coworker, Eva, television reruns are no longer an option. Too shy to get to know Eva in real life, Jane creates an online alter ego and starts to follow her on Twitter.

Face-to-face, Jane is nothing more than Eva's nondescript, clumsy coworker: a social catastrophe. But, behind the safety of her laptop screen, she becomes confident and empowered with purpose and talent. The two hit it off, and what forms is an undeniable creative union, one with the ability to positively change many lives.

There's just one major problem standing in the way, though. Can she fulfill her purpose and make a change in the world while living the rest of her life as an alter ego? Is she brave enough to reveal her true identity and risk squandering all she's gained by it?

This audiobook delves into the dramatic world of women in love, anti-bullying, sexuality, social psychology, and social anxiety.

More than I expected By gaymergal What initially drew me to "The Muse" was its back cover description of Jane Knoll, "nondescript, clumsy, a social catastrophe". She sounded a bit like myself. The outline that the back cover depicted was alluring so I picked it up, and am really glad that I did. "The Muse" is more than just a novel about a socially inept women seeking love, it dealt a lot with how bullying doesn't just stay a childhood memory and how it can shape a person's life for many years down the road. What was also unexpected was that for a novel that touched upon tragic topics like suicide, it still maintained an uplifting theme. With great quotes such as, "Taking action is more powerful than standing back and hiding. We serve the world best when we shine our light on others."Overall "The Muse" leaves me with the hope that maybe one day I too can break away from my "Plain Jane" lifestyle ;p

Well I'm glad i decided to give it a try. The whole book is amazing, the story is touching and very powerful. As you read you get drawn into the characters and you can just see this happening in the real world. The author did a great job portraying characters that are so real they can be you or me. Personally I'm a bit of a introverted person so I definitely could relate to parts of the story. But I'm not going to spoil it by telling everyone what happens =)All I'll say is that this is not the first book I read from this author and she never disappoints. Great characters, stories you can really relate to (yes I mean real characters not perfect people meeting perfect people that have a perfect life and so on on on and on).In regard to that negative review I saw, yes I have to agree that the book is deep and dark in places, just as anyone one of us can be when dealing with real life and hurtful experiences. But I totally disagree about the comment about the main character not doing anything about her life. But like I said I'm not going to spoil it =)All this said in my humble opinion this is one book that any person that appreciates a good story shouldn't miss. And to all the spelling OCD people out there ;), please excuse any error in my review, English is not my first language. Blessings to all and thanks to the author for working so had so we can enjoy such great stories =)

From the beginning, I could relate to Jane. A victim of childhood bullying, Jane struggles to find her way in an adult world. The situation she gets herself into keeps the reader on the edge of her seat. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. In fact, I read this book in one day.I have to mention Larry's character -- he stole the show. I have never laughed out loud so much while reading a novel. I wanted him to be my best friend.I LOVED THIS BOOK. The characters are so deep and rich. Suzie Carr managed to get EVERYTHING in this novel -- love, acceptance, hope, relateable characters, social awareness, and a sense of comedic relief to soften the realistic dark moments.Suzie Carr knocked this one out of the park. I fully, wholeheartedly recommend this book -- you will not be disappointed!

Presents an innovative, constructive alternative to Christian involvement in the "culture wars" Church leaders and scholars have long wrestled with what should provide a guiding vision for Christian engagement in culture and politics. In this book Thomas Bushlack argues that a retrieval of Thomas Aquinas's understanding of civic virtue provides important resources for guiding this engagement today. Bushlack suggests that Aquinas's vision of the pilgrim church provides a fitting model for seeking the earthly common good of the political community, and he notes the features of a Thomistic account of justice and civic virtue that remain particularly salient for the twenty-first century. The book concludes with suggestions for cultivating a Christian rhetoric of the common good as an alternative to the predominant forms of discourse fostered within the culture wars that have been so divisive.

Politics for a Pilgrim Church: A Thomistic Theory of Civic Virtue, by Thomas J. Bushlack

Review Jean Porter — University of Notre Dame “Thomas Bushlack’s account of the civic virtues provides a much-needed bridge between classical Thomism and the moral challenges and values of democracy and civic engagement. . . . This book is an important contribution to Thomistic ethics, but it also offers a great deal to anyone who cares about justice, the public sphere, or the social witness of the church.”William Cavanaugh — DePaul University  “A serious attempt to help a church with one foot in this world and one foot in the next to achieve balance. . . . Bushlack connects his work on Aquinas with a sensitive and holistic reading of Vatican II’s ecclesiology and thereby points a way beyond a church consumed by culture wars. This book is a significant contribution to Catholic political thought, but its generous spirit will appeal to anyone interested in common goods.”Eric Gregory — Princeton University “Various retrievals of Aquinas have been a hallmark of modern Catholic thought, especially in discussions of natural law, virtue, and the common good. But the relation of these many Thomisms to resurgent ecumenical interest in political theology has been largely implicit. With clarity and charity, Bushlack’s elegant book corrects this surprising neglect by advancing a Thomistic account of civic virtue within democratic polities. Politics for a Pilgrim Church is a needed book for today.”  Stephen J. Pope — Boston College “This lively and compelling development of Vatican II’s image of the pilgrim church couldn’t come at a better time. Bushlack’s ecclesially centered virtue ethics moves beyond stale polarities by creatively integrating an ethic of witness with an ethic of political responsibility. A must-read for anyone interested in contemporary Christian social ethics.”

About the Author Thomas J. Bushlack is assistant professor of Christian ethics at the University of St. Thomas, Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he is also part of the Project for Mindfulness and Contemplation.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pilgrim and Political People By Steve Millies Bushlack has delivered a fresh and thoughtful perspective on Aquinas's enduring contribution to our theological and political understanding. Too often, the temptation with St. Thomas either is to embrace him or to dismiss him because his work was so exhaustively systematic. It seems people either are drawn to a perception of rigidity, all questions having been answered forever, or repelled by it. Yet what is best in Aquinas and in the church's tradition is not really rigid or fixed at all. It is flexible, adaptable, eternal, and so we neither should embrace it nor dismiss it very easily. Aquinas always challenges us in the fresh light of changing circumstances. Bushlack finds his method in this exacting (and, true) proposition, and takes up the metaphor of pilgrimage to consider the common good in the light of a fragmented world and a secular political culture. There are no easy answers, and Bushlack has not offered any. To navigate in the social and political world as Catholics among non-Catholics can be uncomfortable. We ought not to be tempted by the allure of easy answers, either to give up or to circle the wagons to build a ghetto of certainty. The strength of this book lies in its bold and honest effort to link the eternal to the temporal, the ancient tradition of the church to our present lives. Pilgrims walk a long and hard road, the effort taxes us--and, it should if the journey has value. But the road began someplace, and it leads someplace when we walk it.

It was dry, full of obfuscations, and seemed to lack direction. I have been known to read about quantum theory, but this had no interesting features to recommend it.

Globalization, Spirituality & Justice (Rev Ed) (Theology in Global Perspective) (Tgp-Theologoy of Global Perspective), by Daniel G. Groody

Review In breath-taking scope, Daniel Groody has done what we might think impossible, to write something fresh, demanding, and generative on the theme of justice... He reaches beyond Catholic social teaching, cites parallel teaching in other world religions, and focuses upon enfleshed models of risk, obedience, and generosity. --Walter Brueggemann

About the Author Daniel G. Groody is a Holy Cross priest and associate professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, where he directs the Center for Latino Spirituality and Culture. He is the author of Border of Death, Valley of Life: An Immigrant Journey of Heart and Spirit, and editor of Gustavo Gutierrez: Spiritual Writings.

So states the cover blurb from Walter Brueggemann on "Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice: Navigating the Path to Peace," released on April 17, 2007 by Daniel G. Groody. The basic premise is, metaphorically, that the global family has booked passage and is now aboard the ship of globalization and there is no turning back to the shore. The question we must ask ourselves, as passengers on this ship, is, "who is at the helm and where are we going?" As Gustavo Gutierrez quips, "Being against globalization is like being against electricity." We can't stop the ship, and one would question the wisdom of wanting to, but the issues of who's driving and where will we end up are legitimate. The book begins by offering an overview of the dual nature of globalization--its inherent propensity for good, such as the triumphs of technology, and for ill, such as the tragedy of poverty. Perhaps more importantly, chapter one details where we have sailed on this ship so far. This chapter seeks to give a realistic picture of the world today and paints that picture by using the most current statistics available. These statistics were gathered from sources such as the World Bank, the United Nations annual Human Development and World Development reports, and the World Institute for Development Economic Research. It is staggering to learn that 19 percent of the global population lives on less than $1 per day, 48 percent live on less than $2 per day, 75 percent live on less than $10 per day, and, according to the World Bank, two-thirds of the population of the planet lives in poverty. The weight of these income disparities is compounded when one looks at the unequal distribution of wealth and our disordered spending patterns. According to an article in the December 2006 issue of "The Economist," half of all wealth is held by only 2 percent of the world's adults. The world spends almost as much money on toys and games as the poorest 20 percent of the population earns in a year, and four times as much on alcohol as on international development aid. The troubling area of military spending is also addressed. The world picture, from the perspective of poverty and need is indeed bleak, but Professor Groody does not leave us in the grip of its reality with no hope. He is convinced that, while fully aware of the abuses committed in the name of religion throughout history, the gift theology can bring to the process of globalization is a navigation system that has the potential to guide us to a place of solidarity and peace, where if globalization is left to itself or to those leaders who are only motivated by profit we may run aground on the icebergs of greed. As Groody notes, we are doing theological reflection all the time, but he argues that to find a place of human solidarity we must undergo a conversion from "money-theism" to monotheism. The remaining eight chapters of the book deal with how the various sub-disciplines of theology inform the process of globalization.* Chapter two details the core narratives of the Bible--the Narrative of the Empire, the Narrative of the Poor, the Narrative of Yahweh, the Narrative of Idolatry, and the Narrative of the Gospel, integrating them all with the Narrative of the Passover.* Chapter three challenges idolatry and excessive wealth through the words of the early church writers.* Chapter four lays out an overview of Catholic social teaching with an acronym ("A God of Life") that provides a framework on which to hang the basic tenets. There are also several very useful charts that detail the documents of the universal and regional churches by categories of year, author, context, and key concept.* Chapter five consists of a short section (five or six pages) on the basic social teachings of each of the major, non-Judeo-Christian, world religions--Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Bahai Faith, and African Indigenous religions. Here we see that social justice is not unique to Christianity.* In chapter six the lives of five contemporary models of justice are briefly chronicled: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa, and Oscar Romero. Attention is paid especially to their foundational experiences, the major metaphor of their life, their operative theology, and their core contribution to justice.* Chapter seven reflects on God through the perspective of the poor by looking at liberation theology and the preferential option for the poor. This chapter is an especially helpful read for anyone who wishes to understand what is meant by these two terms and the position of the Vatican on liberation theology. The global perspective is readily apparent again in this chapter as attention is paid to Black, Hispanic, Feminist, and Asian liberation theology.* Chapter eight concerns the rite of the liturgy, and justice as living in right relationships with God, self, others, and the environment. This chapter also has several nice charts that are helpful in linking the sacraments to social teaching by way core issue.* The final chapter on spirituality and transformation beautifully sums up the book by looking to the spiritual disciplines which can strengthen us for doing the work of justice in the world: fasting, prayer, community, solidarity, nature, simplicity, recollection, and Sabbath. Each chapter begins with a relevant story, and ends with a set of questions that would be helpful for personal reflection, group discussion, or classroom use, and a detailed bibliography for further reading and study.I recommend Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice for upper level undergrads and graduate students in theology, peace studies, political science, ethics and justice, and economics and business, as well as justice groups, and the general reader interested in this vital and timely topic. Groody has managed to research and write a compelling treatise on global injustice without conveying a bleak and hopeless message. At its core, this book seeks to respond to the deeper issues of the human heart that globalization has largely left unexplored--questions related to belonging and loneliness, good and evil, peace and division, healing and suffering, meaning and meaninglessness, hope and despair, love and apathy, justice and injustice, freedom and slavery, and ultimately life and death. He is not interested in overwhelming readers with guilt, but rather with guiding readers to examine our personal and corporate lives and motivations, all the while encouraging us to think beyond ourselves to the needs of our brothers and sisters in the global family. The book is clear and well documented, exquisitely written, and sings a wonderful melody of the gratuitousness of God that is both a gift to and a demand on our lives.

Great for a book group with discussion questions at the end of each chapter. I have already recommended this book to many.

Must read By Tim Meier Every Christian, Protestant or Catholic needs to read this book, a blend of prescriptive social mandates and reflective liturgical ideals. In an age of much confusion, globalized violence and disparity between the rich and poor Groody helps the reader self-reflect while motivating al of us to actually do something for the Kingdom. I'm grateful for his book.

By Terry Williams I enjoyed the logical, easy - to- follow summaries at the end of each chapter. This book tells how Satan is trying to destroy you, your witness and your family through his tactics. These are some excerpts from the book:The good that God intended in establishing marriage as the core community, an intimate community in which partners are given a taste of the eternal community of love, has been twisted and corrupted by evil into a relationship often causing overwhelming pain rather than providing a foretaste of joy. What is significant is that Christ looked back, past the Fall, and spoke of marriage as it was “at the beginning.” Then the two were one—an “us” rather than two “me’s” coming together in the hope that the needs of each individual would be met by the other. In the beginning there were no consequences like those initiated by the Fall; no man claiming the right to rule over the woman. Yes, after the Fall many husbands and wives have loved each other dearly, and done the best they could. But Jesus calls us in Matthew 19 to go back to the beginning; back to the time when the two became one flesh. If we are to recover the core community, in which husband and wife experience life as one, we must go back with Jesus to the beginning. In fact, in this context we might go so far as to translate submit as “respond.” Wives are to respond to their husbands as the Church is to respond to Christ. And again, as Paul emphasizes at the beginning of this passage, we are to “submit [that is, be responsive] to each other out of reverence for Christ.”There is another hint in Genesis 1:26 why the gift of choice was necessary. God stated His intention of letting humans “rule over” what we today would call the biosphere—all areas on the earth that support life. The Hebrew word for rule here is radah. It occurs 25 times in the Old Testament, and is used to indicate the rule of human beings rather than the rule of God. Even before God created human beings, His intent was to entrust the welfare of earth and its living creatures to humankind. To carry out this mission, human beings must be able to distinguish between options, and be able to choose the best. Choice is a gift God simply had to give to humankind. Without the ability to choose we would not be persons as God is a person. Without the ability to choose we would never be able to care for God’s creation.Satan’s Strategy Exposed Satan’s strategies to nudge us toward choosing what is not right are hardly new or innovative. But they are effective. He uses two major tactics in Western culture. The first tactic is to encourage relativism. This is the assumption that there is no such thing as absolute truth or absolute morality. A thing can be true for one person and not true for another. Or an action might be morally right for one person and morally wrong for another. Each individual determines for himself or herself what is right and what is not right. But without an external standard that defines what is right, “right” and “wrong” are nothing more than personal opinions. The second tactic is reflected in something called situation ethics. Jesus taught that we must love our neighbors as ourselves. Christian proponents of situation ethics have argued from Jesus’ teaching that in any situation we simply determine “the loving thing to do,” and choose that. If doing the loving thing means we have to break one of God’s Ten Commandments, then that is what we must do. The major problem with situation ethics is that what is right and what is not right are not simply a matter of motives. Our intentions might be good, but we cannot predict the results of our choices. In fact, situation ethics leads us back to Eden. Eve chose to eat the forbidden fruit not only because “it was pleasing to the eye,” but also, primarily, because it was “desirable for gaining wisdom.” Eve chose to do what was not right because she thought it would lead to something “good.” Eve could not have been more wrong. Whatever her motive, the choice she made led to disaster. We recall the words from Proverbs: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12). The more we explore the gift of choice, the more we see its downside. What we learn from the story of Cain is that whatever choices we face, we need to concentrate on doing what is right in Gods eyes. The first essential element is to love the Lord “with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Parents who are committed to the Lord and are growing in their relationship with Him set a Kingdom tone for the other family members. The second essential element for a family to experience the eternal Kingdom of love is expressed by these verses: “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts” (Deuteronomy 6:6), and “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds” (Deuteronomy 11:18). Parents should know God’s Word and take it to heart. They are to grasp His priorities and values and make them their own. They are to live the truth they understand, and to be on a quest constantly to learn more. The third essential element is to teach God’s Word in a nonformal setting. In our culture, teaching or instruction is considered to be what happens in school. The problem is that what is learned in formal settings is seldom integrated into one’s life. And it almost never has an impact on one’s values, personal commitments or lifestyle. It is in nonformal settings, in the process of sharing life, that hearts and minds are shaped. When we look at Old Testament Law we have to understand the historical situation. The people who followed Moses to freedom really did not know God. They had only recently seen His power and experienced His goodness. But they had no idea of His character, so different from that of the deities of Egypt and surrounding nations. Now Israel had entered into a relationship with the living God, One who is not simply a power but a person. In this context, Law was intended first of all to reveal the kind of person God is, and second to teach Israel how to maintain a close personal relationship with Him. Should the people of Israel maintain that relationship by keeping the Law, great blessing would follow. In fact, the Law laid the foundation for a specially shaped society—one that enabled Israel to experience something of the coming eternal community of love. The enduring answer to that question was revealed to them in the Ten Commandments. Here we see a powerful reflection of God’s nature and character. The first four Commandments told Israel that God is unique. There is no other God, and He alone is to be worshiped. The next six Commandments unveiled for them the moral character of God and His values. God has, and He values, respect for individuals, for their rights and property. God has, and He values, loyalty and commitment in relationships. God guards, and He values, the lives and even the reputations of each individual. How do we live in intimate relationship with this person who has delivered us and has revealed Himself to us? The answer was that they were to be as much like Him as possible, again adopting and living by His values as expressed in the Ten Commandments. After giving His people the Ten Commandments, God gave detailed instructions for a special way of life to Moses, who, in turn, taught the Israelites God’s rules and ordinances.Perhaps the most striking and least understood aspect of Old Testament Law is that it laid out in detail the kind of society God yearned for His people to experience. In a society shaped by obedience to the Law, individuals would be secure and blessed. There would be no sexual abuse (see Leviticus 18). The rights and property of all would be protected (see Exodus 22). The poor would find help and at the same time maintain self-respect (see Leviticus 19:10; 23:22; 25:35–37; Deuteronomy 15:7–11). Anyone who committed a crime against a fellow Israelite would make restitution and be restored to a right relationship with God and his fellow citizens (see Exodus 22). Children would grow to adulthood in a healthy society, free from the fears and tensions that mar the lives of those in every other society. In a sense it is unfortunate that Bible translators chose to render the Hebrew torah as “law.” The essential meaning of torah is “teaching or instruction.” In its biblical context, the Law was divine instruction on how Israel was to live close to the Lord, and experience His blessing. Law not only provided Israel with a clear revelation of God’s moral character, but also guided Israel to fashion a society in which all would be blessed. As we fall for Satan’s scheme that promotes Law as a way of salvation, it follows that we also become blind to the Gospel. Some struggle to be “good enough,” tormented by their failures and fears. Others simply abandon the struggle and substitute their own morality for the true morality God has revealed.By distorting the concept of biblical Law, Satan has effectively overcome good with evil in far too many lives. He has distorted humankind’s concept of God, producing fear of the One who loves each individual deeply. By casting Law as coercive demand rather than as guidance, Satan has induced guilt and shame, and has launched many on a quest for salvation rooted in self-effort rather than faith. While this strategy has been most effective with nonbelievers, it has also had an impact on Christians. Far too many of us read the Bible from the perspective of Law rather than of grace. Far too many of us, when we fall short, doubt God’s love rather than realizing that God, like any loving father whose two-year-old stumbles and falls, stoops to lift us up and set us on our feet again. Rather than feel uncertain about God’s continuing love, we are to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy [when we fall short] and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).Experiencing a Community of Faith 1. Encourage the leadership of your church to promote small groups and to provide training for those who participate. 2. Gather a few friends who will commit to meeting together weekly to share, pray, study and encourage each other. 3. If most people seem unwilling to respond to your initiative, look for just one or two who will meet with you. 4. Establish ground rules. Here are a few important examples: Everything spoken in the group will be kept confidential; each member will share only as much of a private nature as he or she is comfortable doing; you will pray for each other daily. 5. Look for opportunities to strengthen relationships by making contact during the week or doing things together. 6. Commit to caring for each other as you come to know each other better. 7. Be open and honest about your thoughts and feelings. Put aside fear of confronting one another in loving ways. 8. Invite others to join your community group. 9. Take time for each person who wants to do so to tell his or her story. At times, and especially as others join your group, have members retell their stories. We call them the “old” and the “new” testaments. There are reasons for this distinction. Long ago Jeremiah predicted that God would one day make a “new covenant” with His people. The new covenant would replace the Law covenant introduced at Sinai. Even though the Old Testament tells the story of the old covenant, and the New Testament unveils the wonders of the new,the two testaments constitute one revelation by the Creator of His purposes and promises. One of these purposes is ultimately to create an eternal community of love, a theme first glimpsed in Genesis 1.Intimately linked to this ultimate purpose is a revelation of good gifts intended to enable us to experience some of the benefits of the eternal community in our own time.Actively Seeking Restoration 1. Do not ignore sin in your congregation or in a Christian friend. Be willing to speak the truth in love when a brother or sister falls into sin. 2. Affirm your love for and support of those who are ready to confess and repudiate their sins. 3. Be quick to recognize your own sins and weaknesses. Be willing to ask forgiveness if you have hurt others and be willing to go to others who have hurt you, with a view to restoration of your relationship. 4. Refrain from condemning or looking down on others who have fallen. Remember that restoration requires “not counting [their] sins against them” (2 Corinthians 5:19).5. Do not become discouraged by what you see in others. If Christ is in their hearts, they will change. 6. The greatest witness we can give to the presence of Christ in our lives does not come by taking pains to “look good”; the greatest witness we can give to Jesus is the changes others see in our lives when we are open and honest—with ourselves and with them (see 2 Corinthians 3:18).Then one day, as Asaph was entering the sanctuary of God, it all came together. “Then,” he wrote, “I understood their final destiny” (verse 17). The apparently blessed life of those who reject God’s discipline has placed them on “slippery ground.” They feel no need of God, and so He has no place in their lives. In the end God will “cast them down to ruin” (verse 18). At this realization, Asaph saw his complaint as senseless and ignorant. Asaph lived in the presence of a God who was always with him, a God who held his hand and provided counsel. A God who afterward “will take me into glory” (verse 24). Realizing that despite his trials and his troubles God was with him, Asaph concluded, “As for me, it is good to be near God” (verse 28).When each of us sees the other in his or her uniqueness as truly counting in the Body of Christ, we become humble and experience unity “in spirit and purpose.”When we repudiate the idea that we are in some way superior to others, when we honor each other’s uniqueness, and when we commit to using our uniqueness in service to others, we can and will overcome Satan’s efforts to use our uniqueness for evil. We will overcome evil with good.Only as we are committed to following Jesus can we experience all that God has in store for us. Only as we are committed to following Jesus can we make choices that will bring benefit rather than harm. When we realize that truth reveals reality as only God knows, then we will be able to step out boldly to follow Jesus and to act on His Word—and that truth will make us truly free.Anything that will keep us from responding to God’s voice with trust for our own “today” is a victory for the evil one. By causing chaos, Satan seeks to overcome with evil the good of the peace available in Jesus. But however great the evils we experience, God holds out loving arms, inviting us to find peace and rest in Him. And the rest we are to find is the very rest that God Himself experiences.Paul sums up this section with a word of triumph: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you” (Romans 8:11). No wonder Satan wants us to doubt our salvation. If we cannot trust Jesus for forgiveness, how can we trust Him for the power to live righteous lives? Satan wants us to feel guilt and shame. The more guilt we feel, the harder we try to obey God. And the harder we try, the less we rely.Expressing Unconditional Acceptance 1. Unconditional acceptance of a person does not require agreeing with sinful behavior. 2. Unconditional acceptance calls for us to love others who might have different values and beliefs. 3. Unconditional acceptance is an expression of Christ’s love that others can experience. 4. An atmosphere of unconditional acceptance creates opportunities to witness. 5. Unconditional acceptance does not limit us from speaking the truth in love. 6. Treat and speak to others as though they are “real Christians.” 7. Share freely what you do know of Jesus, without worrying about what you do not know. 8. The Holy Spirit convicts others of sin. We are to show others that Jesus loves them.

Not my favorite book by the author By Josh Morgan The latest book from Larry Richards, “Satan Exposed: Defeating the Powers of Darkness” was a bit of a let down. The book is split into two parts. The first part consists of three chapters about good vs. evil and the second part, titled “Warfare in the Here and Now” is made up of 13 chapters each focusing on a gift. The chapters in part two are structured around a gift that God has given his children, a section on Satan’s strategy exposed, detailing how Satan has twisted God’s gift, a section on how to overcome evil with good, followed by a list of suggestions regarding that gift.I found the structure repetitive and I didn’t think the suggestions at the end of each chapter were very helpful. The author often used obscure Greek terms in his writing and the application from them seemed that it would be more appropriate in the context of a Bible commentary.Having read a couple of the other books from this author, most notably the “Teen Study Bible” (which was one of my first Bibles), and “Spiritual Warfare Jesus’ Way”, I came to this book with really high expectations. I enjoy the writings of Larry Richards, but in my suggestion, I’d say choose “Spiritual Warfare Jesus’ Way” over “Satan Exposed”.“I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.”

If that isn't happening for you, according to the author, it is because Satan is keeping you from it. Humans were originally charged by God with the care of the world, to uphold and support all that is good. Despite the fall of man, we can still do that, and experience the satisfaction God intended us to have from that job. In order to do that, we need to incorporate thirteen gifts God has for us. When using those gifts, we will experience a taste of God's eternal community of love. The thirteen gifts are:1. The Gift of Core Community2. The Gift of Choice3. The Gift of Family4. The Gift of the Law5. The Gift of a Community of Faith6. The Gift of Restoration7. The Gift of God's Discipline8. The Gift of Uniqueness9. The Gift of Provision10. The Gift of Truth11. The Gift of Peace12. The Gift of Eternal Life, Now!13. The Gift of Unconditional AcceptanceThe author goes into great detail about what each one of these thirteen items are. He gives recommendations about how to have them in our lives, along with ways to enjoy and experience them. The concrete examples he gives from his own life, as well as, from scripture, are easy to understand, and interesting. For instance, Mr. Richards relates about the time he discovered a contractor he hired was cheating him. Despite being upset with that knowledge, the author recalled Jesus' words to "bless those who despitefully use you." The outcome of that story is amazing. Many of the suggestions are common sense. We often "know" ways we could make our life better, yet we have a hard time putting them into practice. Satan is the reason for that. He wants to undermine the good we try to have in our lives, or do in the world.Satan tries to confuse and mislead us, and the author gives examples of how that happens. As Hosea 4:6 states, "my people perish for lack of knowledge." If Satan has thwarted us from learning about something, we will not be able to use a gift because we have been prevented from being taught about it. One of the purposes of this book is to give people that knowledge. The author makes some excellent points. I do not agree with his interpretation of Genesis 1. However, I do agree with the other points he makes. I think it would be worthwhile for each of us to examine our lives for ways we could experience more of what God wants for us, and how these thirteen items might help with that. Also, it would be wise to think about measures to put into place to keep Satan from sabotaging us. As we are warned in 1 Peter 5:8 to, "Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour."Experiencing additional contentment and joy in life, along with more of God's love, is certainly something to strive for. I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who has ever been frustrated in their life, or those who would like a greater sense of satisfaction and closeness to The Lord in their daily living. The publisher has provided bookreadingtic with a complimentary copy of Satan Exposed through Chosen Books for the purpose of review.
