"Dear Millie, I am writing you this letter in the hope that life has afforded you the opportunity to grow old enough to read it..." So starts the most extraordinary diary about a seven-year-old girl and her family, violently thrown into the most dreaded abyss when they discover she has cancer in the form of a malignant brain tumour. On the morning of 5th April 2013, Millie wakes up complaining of 'fuzziness' in her eyes. This very quickly turns to loss of vision. Within the next two days Millie will undergo her first eight-hour craniotomy (brain operation) to preserve the little eyesight she has left. Within four days, by now blind, she will be diagnosed with cancer, and within a fortnight she will begin her first cycle of aggressive chemotherapy. Over the course of the six months that follow, Millie will undertake two further brain operations, three additional cycles of chemotherapy and thirty sessions of radiotherapy - 4,000 miles away from home. This diary is her story, the intimate tale of her illness in three parts (Hell, Purgatory and Heaven). It is recounted by her father as his gift to Millie, so that she can read it at an age when she will be old enough to understand the enormity of the immeasurable suffering she had to endure, and the extraordinary courage with which she did it. Dear Millie is not just based on a true story - it is a true story. It is an extraordinary tale of suffering, destruction, resilience and, ultimately, rebirth. In support of Great Ormond Street Hospital, Marco Previero has pledged to donate all royalties to this charity in order to contribute to the ongoing effort to help other children, now and in the future, in fighting this most deadly of afflictions and its devastating consequences.

About the Author Marco Previero was born in Montpellier, France, in 1972. He moved to the UK in 1988 to finish his schooling - and stayed. Having long accepted without too much remorse the gentle pleasures of an uneventful and ordinary life, he was woefully unprepared to guide and support his seven-year-old daughter through the vicious agony of cancer treatment when she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in April 2013. Previero has an amazing and intelligent way of describing the chaos around him By Kristine Fisher Dear Millie by Marco Previero is a free NetGalley ebook that I began to read in late, late March. Finding the Emperor of All Maladies to be seeped too far in clinical speak, I decided that this book would be much more up my alley, especially with the documentaries and talk radio stories that I've been encountering about alternative treatments.Where the Emperor of All Maladies succeeds and swells in medical terminology, this book outweighs it in all of the insight and gravity that a family of caregivers has to other. Even if Dear Millie is written in a progressingly catastrophic journal format, Previero has an amazing and intelligent way of describing the chaos around him. He also really, really seems to like Whole Foods.

As I read the first few pages, I was struck at how similar my, or any parent's, reaction would be if faced with such an unthinkable medical nightmare as the author.'s My heart went out to this family as I read. Totally mesermized, I could not put this book down and finished it in a day. I thank the author for not only allowing an unknown audience to be a part of such a personal experience, but also for educating us as to the treatment protocols for this disease. I had no idea it was that extensive or dangerous! Thank you for writing this book. Sometimes we need a book like this to remind us how precious life (and our children) is.

By Katarina Ortmann A deeply moving true account from the father's POV about his seven year old daughter being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatment.This book is extremely well-written. The subject is heart-breaking and highly emotional, so it's no surprise that I cried several times while reading this. I applaud Marco for his honest account of his journey through his daughter's cancer. I hope Millie will be healthy enough to read this as an adult. I couldn't even imagine, what they went though, but after reading this I have a tiny idea.thank you for writing this book and sharing your story with the world.

About the Author Once a librarian, now a writer of romance, Lynn Shurr grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch country. She attended a state college and earned a very impractical B.A. in English Literature. Her first job out of school really was working as a cashier in a burger joint. Moving from one humble job to another, she traveled to North Carolina, then Germany, then California where she buckled down and studied for an M.A. in Librarianship.

New degree in hand, she found her first reference job in the Heart of Cajun Country, Lafayette, Louisiana. For her, the old saying, “Once you’ve tasted bayou water, you will always stay here” came true. She raised three children not far from the Bayou Teche and lives there still with her astronomer husband.

When not writing, Lynn likes to paint, cheer for the New Orleans Saints and LSU Tigers, and take long road trips nearly anywhere. Her love of the bayou country, its history and customs, often shows in the background for her books.

Harding I ran my batteries out twice reading this book, couldn't wait to see what came next. lynn shurr has created unforgettable characters in her passionate, idealistic environmentalist heroine and brooding damaged hero. no cardboard generic characters here; these are fully fleshed out, real people brought to life by Shurr's deft descriptions and snappy dialogue. she puts just as much into crafting supporting characters from dysfunctional families to co-workers and colorful community members. though the book is filled with humor and spicy romance, it also touches on serious subjects such as post-traumatic stress, guilt, political corruption and small town secrets. I laughed out loud at some of the antics in the heroine's feud with the garbage collectors and grinned at the double entendre in the bantering dialogue, but one part of the story actually brought me to tears. I highly recommend this totally satisfying read.

Garbage and politics create the backdrop for a really interesting budding, spicy romance. The budding romance has its struggles. The characters have their personal struggles as well as family is family no matter the reason. Gotta love a big brother who can fix almost anything but himself. And yes, most Louisiana politics aren't quiet as messy, but anyone who has dealt with politicians will recognize someone they know. No spoilers here. A really good read!

No super talent or perfect life just real life family dramas, ups and downs and people just living their lives.What made the story work was touches of humour, a willingness to work at a relationship and believing in each other even when life gets rocky.Loved the female lead character- gutsy and real.Definitely a book to enjoy.

Can't recommend it enough By Lindsay Tatge When I looked at the cover and even the cover copy I was expecting a little more touchy/feely...but let me tell you Patty Houser isn't messing around. She is well educated and does a very good job of explaining deep issues and concepts in a way that is easy to understand. I got so much more from this book than I was expecting! I really can't give it enough praise.To start off the book we are given a reminder that as Christians we are to love God with our heart and our mind. As women (yes I'm making a huge generalization ) we tend to be good at loving God with our hearts. This extends into how we share God with others, we explain through our personal experiences with Him. Now there is not a thing wrong with that, but we also need to be able to back up what we believe with some facts. That's right folks, she is talking about apologetics."Simply put, apologetics is the rational defense for the truth claims of Christianity."Patty goes on to present us with a challenge, make apologetics part of our daily bible study and time with God. It is a spiritual discipline that requires our time and effort, these are not things we are going to learn by reading them once and moving on. But she doesn't leave us hanging, she walks us through how our beliefs affect our life...our beliefs make us who we are. If that is true then we need know why we believe what we believe. Not only do we need to know it, we need to be able to share it.The book breaks down how to think well and recognize when we are not. Then goes on to defend the bible and it's authenticity and finishes with who Jesus is historically. Basically Patty gives us a very good start on apologetics. She also points to where we can get more information so we can start in on her challenge.Anther wonderful thing about this book is that each chapter ends with a set of Discussion Questions. I wasn't able to do this, but I look forward to rereading this book and sharing it with friends. I think that there is a lot more to get out of the book by using the questions.If you are interested in knowing more about what you believe, or searching for what you believe, or even want to know why you should want to know more about what you believe, I highly recommend this book!

This book is approximately 198 pages of written thoughts, but in the back included is a glossary of terms and an appendix which brings the total pages up to 224.The author writes that to have an extraordinary faith that one must engage the mind as well. Dynamic faith requires engaging both your heart and mind. She quotes Matt. 22:37 and says that Jesus told the people to love God with their hearts and soul, but then he also told them to love God with their minds. She points out that most people know what they believe, but is is enough to keep us securely grounded in our faith when challenged?Chapter one is entitled "Yikes-What is this?" In this chapter she talks about fearing the beast, identifying the beast, the beast is biblical and embracing the beast. She explains that she is an Aplogetic, which is a rational argumentation to defend the claims God makes in the Bible about himself and the world to those who don't believe they are true. Apologists help them to see that they are true. She explains that it's the art of taking all the evidence and organizing it in a coherent line of reasoning to demonstrate to ourselves and to others why it is more rational or reasonable to believe that Christianity's central beliefs are true than to disbelieve them.In the first section the author says that if we want to a woman who love's God will our hears and minds we need to make examining our beliefs a priority. She further delves into what exactly are our beliefs, how they are formed and do they effect our behavior. She explains that beliefs should be based on truth. The Bible is clear: Truth exsits. God gave us His Word so we could know the truth. Then she asks about false beliefs, rationality and where knowledge fits in. She says we must take responsibility for what we think, even if it makes us unpopular. She explains how to begin examining your own Christian beliefs.This was a difficult read for me and also difficult to write a review on. As I was reading this book the one thing that kept popping in my mind was the movie God's Not Dead. In this movie a young, college student takes a philosophy class where the professor tells the students he will give them an A if they write on paper that god's not dead and turn it in to him. The young student stood by his faith and refused. The professor then told him to prove God's not dead. This book reminds me of this movie so much, because the author is tell me that in order to believe you must have knowledgeable proof.Faith is a strong or unshakable belief in something, especially without proof or evidence. I do not need proof to believe that God loves me or that he he is real. I believe in John 3:16-17For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have ever lasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might have everlasting life.I believe that your faith strengthens as your your relationship with God strengthens through reading the Bible which contains our guide to live by and through prayer.With that being said, I agree with a lot of what the author discusses. I do understand that it's important to know what you believe and why. This book was just too intense for me. Some people need proof to believe and some just want to have lots of facts in case they are in an argument about faith, so this would be a perfect book for them.*I received this book free from the publisher for a book review through their blogger program. By Beth Troutman A Woman’s Guide to Knowing What You Believe is by far the best and most concise I’ve found for engaging with non-believers in a relational, logical way. Sharing my faith with non-believers is often intimidating in a culture so hostile to Christianity. I have walked away from these conversations feeling ineffective and frustrated, or have lacked the courage to even start them. I am gaining confidence as I continue to follow the suggestions in this book for solidifying what I believe, backed by rational reasons for my beliefs, which is also strengthening my own faith. Patty Houser shares in this book how to tactfully dismantle the many “sound bites” in culture (e.g., the bible is full of contradictions, all paths lead to God, I’m spiritual, not religious, all religions say the same thing, Christians are intolerant, etc.) and points out basic laws of logic and thought that will help me engage others in rational conversation. She also offers reasonable answers to questions concerning evolution vs. creationism, the authenticity and reliability of today’s bible, the resurrection, etc., and best of all, she includes support for these answers from non-Christian sources, which I think is extremely helpful when dealing with non-Christians. I highly recommend this book to those who wants to effectively engage the unbelievers in their life. This book will strengthen your own faith as well! With the engaging content and discussion questions after each chapter, this book would make an excellent bible study.

About the Author

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan, Italy, Alessandra Piontelli qualified as a specialist in Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Parma. For more than a decade she worked at the Tavistock Clinic, London, where her responsibilities included teaching child neurology and psychiatry. In 1983 she was appointed Visiting Professor by the Department of Child Neurology and Psychiatry, University of Milan. Since 1990 she has worked at the First Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Milan, where she is involved in research into fetal and neonatal behavior and physiology and maternal behavior during pregnancy and the early post-partum period. In 2007 she was Visiting Professor at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and, in 2011, Visiting Professor and Master in Pre-Natal and Peri-Natal Education at the University of Valencia, Spain. Her previous books include Backwards in Time: a Study in Infant Observation (Karnac Books, 1986), From Fetus to Child (Routledge, 1992), Twins: From Fetus to Child (Routledge, 2002), and Twins in the World (McMillan-Palgrave, 2008).

By Rudders Well, this is the third volume of stories I've reviewed in this series and once again, I've not been disappointed.Without reiterating too much of what I've said in my previous reviews, each of these delightful short stories has an unexpected, and in this volume more so than in previous ones, a quite often rather `naughty' and punchier twist in the ending - never more so was the term `naughty but nice' quite so appropriate. Compared to previous volumes, I think the stories here are, whilst still quite charming, are tending towards slightly more adult orientated themes. Again the reader never really sees what's coming, and the author is an adept at leading the reader up the garden path so to speak before firmly tugging them back to a really effective punchline and conclusion.What I've also noticed and enjoyed in this third volume is the way author very quickly settles the reader into feeling comfortable and familiar in what they're reading; although each story is different and unique in its own way, there are often striking similarities in names, places, and the domestic settings in which they occur that you could almost feel that you're reading another chapter in the lives of the characters in a previous story, much like that sense of familiarity you might encounter in reading the sequel to a novel. By employing such technique, many of the characters appear much more developed and rounded than they might otherwise, given the limitations of the short and flash fiction genres.I would agree with the author's own admission that his stories are indeed aimed at a primarily female readership, and this volume perhaps more than in previous ones, but as your typical Neanderthal male, I too enjoyed them immensely and as such would contend that they still have a much broader appeal that that of their intended market. Another great collection, and again, highly recommended...* I bought this book via amazon.co.uk (not the .com site), hence it not appearing here as a verified purchase...

Benson Having read the first two volumes in the series, there is a fairly obvious step up in the direction of the stories here. There are more opportunities used to play more intimate mind games with the reader, which I'm all for.There are still the few small issues with punctuation, but they will probably one catch the attention of the fellow writer/reader. As I believe I mentioned in a previous comment, those incidents do not detract from good short story telling.It's not a criticism, but something I think John needs to watch out for, and that is ensuring there is little or no repetition of character names. If reading a series by a writer, just as I have done here, the repetition of a name or a situation stands out clearly.All that said, I enjoyed the tales once again, with my favourites being 'Where Is That Girl?' and 'All In The Mind'. Well done John.

These stories are original and each of them has an ending that can't be expected. In the short amount of words John manages to trick you into expecting one ending then give you a totally different one, however, you need to be awake otherwise it can get a bit confusing and you find yourself thinking `what happened there?'These stories are excellently written and there's no doubt about it, John M W Smith has a talent for writing short stories for women.I received my copy of "Wacky Stories for Women Volume Three" from the author for my honest review.

Many of the James editions are actually so inexpensive, I consider them "Thank You's' from Kindle for just being a subscriber. I write this review for having learned so much about mental habits, how they influence our lives for better or worse, how they originate and how to go about altering bad habits, and how to develop better ones. O.k., so the title tells you this already, but you can have the audio on Kindle recite it to you as you walk your dog. Don't yet have a dog? You can still always get one! You can call him 'William' or ' James' and walk him as you listen to this fine book.

I read this for free as it is now on the public domain but I will buy a hardcopy because it is that good. Solid, simple information made from observations that are just as applicable now as they were in 1890.Perhaps my favorite quote of all time:"So with the man who has daily inured himself to habits of concentrated attention, energetic volition, and self-denial in unnecessary things. He will stand like a tower when everything rocks around him and when his softer fellow mortals are winnowed chaff in the blast."

I have also read every other book published by Somnus Dreadwood and the Black Court. What really appealed to me personally was how different this book was in comparison to so many other books out there on black magick. Somnus opens up the gateway to a system of magick that simply works! Instead of using fancy book covers to lure readers in to the same rehashed magickal systems, Somnus gives the student a well rounded foundation in the dark arts.Well done!
