When Sky Hudson first has a run-in with tall, dark, and handsome Nicholas Ruggarson, she wants nothing more than to throw her coffee at him. He is rude and arrogant, and she is glad she never has to set eyes on him ever again. Or so she thinks.

It turns out not only does she have to see Nick again, but she also has to live with him. Hired as the new nanny to work for Nick's affluent family, she can't seem to get away from the womanizing jerk.

With a hot and cold relationship and an undeniable attraction between them, Sky might finally be the woman to break through Nick's arrogance and discover there is more to him than she ever imagined.

She meets Nick, a total a-hole, who happens to be part of that wealthy family. My issue was with the writing. It felt very juvenile to me. I just didn't connect with it at all. I had issues with how Nick kept repeatedly telling Sky how poor she was and how she means less than nothing to anyone. She sits there and takes it. And then there was this part.....Sky agrees to go out to dinner with Nick. He's in a $2000 suit (because he yells that part out at her) and drives a BMW. Sky wants to go to Burger King and he says "But I drive a BMW!!!" And the author writes that the drive thru worker's eyes were big, no doubt a result of seeing a BMW at the window. Ok....I can't afford a BMW but it's not like he was driving a freaking Rolls Royce!!! Really??? A big deal over a BMW? Ugh. Sky is the nanny but never seems to do anything. Nick is bipolar or something because he flips out and belittles Sky every chance he gets. The romance....there wasn't any. The "romantic" parts were so forced, it was painful to read. It was both of them acting like immature brats. I'm sorry to the author but this book was awful in my honest opinion.

I enjoyed the story well enough; however, the characters were a tough pill to take at times. Honestly, Nick and Sky were difficult to like both separately and together, especially together ... at least until the end of the story. Nick was mean and a bit misogynistic. Other than his eternal appearance, there was nothing that should have drawn Sky to him. Nothing. She didn't know how he was *removing details about the big story reveal* so she didn't know how sweet and kind he could be. Nick's tendency to run away when things got difficult for him got tiresome. He was quite mercurial with his emotional swings. And Sky was only slightly better. She allowed Nick to jerk her around and treat her terribly mean because he couldn't face his feelings. Instead of walking away she sulked and eagerly waited for him to come back again. BAH! I chalk it up to her being a 21-year old but boy was it annoying. The supporting characters, minus Chloe, made the story for me because they were all so likeable.

I always enjoy Komal Kant's books but Beneath Him exceeded all of my expectations. It's an incredible journey - both intense and heartbreaking. As Madeline's new nanny, Sky jumped at the chance for a new opportunity to relocate but she had no idea what was waiting for her in Beverly Hills. Sky grew up in a completely different world than the Ruggarsons. She was as an only child, raised by a single parent - she is sassy and real, valuing honesty, family and hard work. She loves her job but isn't sure of the new materialistic environment she lives in.One aspect that Sky certainly was not prepared for was Nicholas. He is a hot mess but Sky doesn't know if it's because he's a spoiled, arrogant rich kid or if he is struggling with something deeper and more painful. All she truly knows is that he is a angry man burying himself in alcohol and meaningless sex. Further more, Sky has no clue why his family is protecting and sheltering Nick - why they make excuses for his atrocious behavior and choices. She refuses to do the same for him.Every time these two interact there are verbal fireworks. It's awesome. Their conversations are filled with angry, rude remarks and lots of sexual tension. It leaves you to wonder if they will ever get past hiding behind sarcastic words and deal with their emotional and trust issues. It feels important that they do because Sky is developing real feelings for Nick and her bitter words are reaching hard truths within him.Their relationship results in book filled with anticipation. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for so many moments. For Sky and Nick to give into their feelings. To find out the big family secret. To understand all of the various relationships and their complexities. I was waiting for the bottom to drop out and to see how the author would resolve it all. I was not disappointed and I loved every minute of Beneath Him.I devoured Sky and Nick's book and I would definitely recommend it.

From the author of the smash-hit best-seller Firefly Lane and True Colors comes a powerful, heartbreaking novel that illuminates the intricate mother-daughter bond and explores the enduring links between the present and the past.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard: the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father fails ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time - and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya's life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago.

Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother's life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.

I'm glad I listened to that advice from another reviewer as I might have put it down myself. The first half lays the groundwork of the familial relationships between the main characters. Sometimes the reader will get impatient with the flawed characters, as it seems drawn out at times, therefore 4-1/2 stars from me. It is not a happy or feel good type of read. It is sad, heartbreaking, and captivating. There have been many novels lately that flip back and forth between the past and the present, many revolving around wartime. Personally I like that, it is like reading two novels in one. We have seen this in Shanghai Girls, on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Whiskey Island, and countless others. This one gives us an intimate look at Leningrad survivors in the Russian/German war. It varies in the fact that the past is presented as a fairy tale by the Russian mother of two American born daughters. All three are strong-willed and feeling incomplete and do not relate well to each other. As adults, grief unites them and a death-bed promise forces them to face and come to know each other as well as themselves. It starts as the two young daughters Meredith and Nina fail time and again in seeking affection from their cold, distant mother. When they were young their mother would tell them this fairy tale at night, practically the only communication they had between them at the time. It mesmerized them, leaving them wanting more, but the story telling stopped suddenly and does not continue until their adulthood when circumstances brings about the completion of the tale. In actuality the "fairy tale" is the story of their mother's young life in Russia. This tale is the highlight of this novel, and as we move into the second half, this is where the reader gets drawn in as we get more of the story of young Anya and all we've wondered about is brought to light. The author did a wonderful job of evoking every emotion from a mothers and a daughters perspective. The description of war-torn Leningrad is something I won't easily forget. It is atrocious how often it happened in wartime that foreign armies separated children from their parents, and how unfathomly emotional that separation had to be for parent and child...just one aspect of war. I cannot even imagine a hunger so bad, or cold that is so harsh that the children could hardly open their frozen eyelids without bleeding.... and the strength required to get through it all. Most did not. My heart broke and real tears streamed down my face at this mothers plight to save her children, from the hunger, the cold, the war... reminding us once again that war is the ugliest atrocity that mankind has brought upon itself in its quest for power. In the present day story, the visit to Alaska by the three women, the look at Sitka and the history there, and the ending of the novel was extremely satisfying. Even the title is perfect, Winter Garden. It is one of those novels that you keep thinking about long after you close the book. Hannah has matured as a novelist. Her characters are real, the emotions powerful, the writing captivating. Highly recommended.

I say this as someone who has been deeply impressed by Ms. Hannah's writing before -- her "When Lightning Strikes" is on my short list of favorite novels to re-read often, and whenever I pick that book up, I always find something new to appreciate. So I was well aware of how vividly Ms. Hannah envisions history ("When Lightning Strikes" is a paranormal set, for the most part, in 1896), and of how fine her use of language, culture, mores, tone, and description. All of those are again on display in "Winter Garden," a more traditional straight-up family history and memoir, along with the themes of sacrifice, sisterhood, families, and secrets. At the start of "Winter Garden," we meet two pre-teen sisters, Meredith and Nina Whitson. We see them briefly act in a play, a story their mother has told them that seems to be of a worthy, yet poor, young woman, her sister, and the prince who rescues her. But the play angers and upsets their mother, Anya, who cannot tell them why; this makes them vow never to try to please their mother again. Then we see them as full-fledged adults -- Meredith, the nurturer, someone who takes on difficult jobs around the house and at her job without praise or fanfare and is running herself into the ground, and Nina, the prize-winning and world-renowned photojournalist, who takes on difficult jobs in various countries photographing people (mostly in war zones) and is running herself into the ground in a wholly different way. Meredith is married, with two children in college, but her marriage is in trouble because she can't communicate; Nina is in a long-term relationship but can't admit she loves her boyfriend because she isn't able to communicate. Both place their problems in communication solely on their cold, quiet mother Anya's shoulders, and both idolize their father, Evan -- a bluff, hearty, good-humored man who brings out the best in his wife and daughters. Neither daughter knows why Evan married Anya, nor why Anya seems to hate them. But the story of Evan and Anya rests squarely on the shoulders of a deeper, richer and more profound love story of another, younger woman -- a story neither Nina nor Meredith knows, but Evan knows and accepts. This is the reason why Evan, on his deathbed, asks both his daughters to please try to get Anya to tell them the rest of the story about the prince, the worthy young woman and her sister -- all of it. And this promise changes everything . . . .Because so very much of "Winter Garden" relies heavily on the story Anya tells her daughters in fits and starts, I am unable to give you too much information because it would spoil your reading experience. I will say, however, that this novel is not to be missed; Anya's far more than a cold, reserved woman, and her love story with Evan is only a small part of what she's endured over time and throughout her life. And once her daughters figure this out, their view of their mother -- as well as their view of themselves -- changes. Forever.I believe this is a story that women, their daughters, their friends, and most men will enjoy; it is a story of hope, fear, death, friendship, sacrifice, honor, and history. It is also about fate, second chances, and personal redemption; it is a profoundly satisfying reading experience.Just a shade under five stars (I rounded up for Amazon's purposes), highly recommended.Barb Caffrey

The sections set in current times were boring and I really didn't like any of the characters. I love Russian history so decided to skip to the fairytale parts of the book and low and behold here was a really good story! The writing styles were so different...why couldn't the entire book be written this way? I just skimmed through the parts in current times. And I'm sorry, the idea that because the mother suffered so much in Russia gave her the excuse to emotionally abuse her daughters and the supposedly loving father allowed it to go on just didn't work for me. If you want to read an incredible love story set during World War II and the siege of Leningrad...read The Bronze Horseman Trilogy by Paulina Simons. These books will simply sweep you off your feet and break your heart...incredible story written by a Russian who lived in Soviet Russia and whose grandparents lived through the siege. On my list of all time favorites!

Throughout its history, New York City has been challenged by a variety of public health crises. Since the nineteenth century—when it became one of the first American cities to develop a comprehensive public health infrastructure—New York has also stood at the forefront of formulating and implementing urban health policy. Healing Gotham examines in depth how the city has responded to five serious contemporary public health threats: childhood lead poisoning, childhood asthma, HIV/AIDS, obesity, and West Nile virus.

Bruce F. Berg examines the rise and incidence of each condition in the city while explaining why the array of primary tools utilized by urban policy makers—including monitoring and surveillance, education, regulations, and the direct provision of services—have been successful in controlling public health problems. He also argues that forces such as race and ethnicity, New York City’s relationship to the state and federal government, the promotion of economic development, and the availability of knowledge related to preventing, treating, and managing illness all influence effective public health policy making.

By contrasting these five particular cases, this exciting study allows scholars and students to compare public health policy through time and across type. It also helps policy makers understand how best to develop and implement effective public health strategies around the United States.

Healing Gotham, by Bruce F. Berg

Review

For the past two centuries, New York City has been both the source of many of the world’s most challenging urban public health problems and the cradle of its most innovative health solutions. In this timely, well-written, and engaging book, Bruce F. Berg focuses on the role of political and governance systems, giving Healing Gotham a perspective distinct from other accounts. Few scholars have offered in-depth investigations of the lessons learned from the city’s experiences in public health, and fewer still have considered multiple health issues.

(Nicholas Freudenberg, City University of New York, coeditor of Cities and the Health of the Public)

Berg systematically dissects the social, economic, and political forces shaping the policy responses of a leading public health department to five critical challenges―lead poisoning, asthma, AIDS, obesity, and West Nile virus. Both the policy specialist and more general reader will find this book absorbing and insightful.

(Frank J. Thompson, Rutgers University, author of Medicaid Politics: Federalism, Policy Durability, and Health Reform)

Berg's extensive research, keen analysis, and clear exposition, as well as his unique perspective as a political scientist, make this an invaluable resource for any policymaker, politician, health-care provider, or concerned citizen.

(Library Journal)

Berg's book is important and useful--it shows what can be achieved in a complex, modern democracy, often against the odds.

(William Hatchett Environmental Health News)

Covers a wide range of important political perspectives--from neoliberal to libertarian--that influence public health policy... An enjoyable read, this volume will be valuable to those interested in public health, bioethics, and the role of government in health care.

Substance abuse in the LGBTQ community is a serious problem. Whether it is caused or related to genetic predisposition, socialization in bars, covering up or medicating guilt or shame induced by exposure to homophobia, or the pressures of hiding one's sexuality, (or combinations of these) the addiction rates are shockingly higher among the LGBTQ community than the heterosexual community. In larger cities there are substance abuse treatment centers that do have a special focus on the LGBTQ community. There are even "clubhouses" that are either entirely, or almost entirely focused on LGBTQ AA, NA, CMA, ALANON, etc. 12-Step Meetings. These places make for a safe recovery setting for some of this community. The problem is that not all members of the LGBTQ community have access to these "friendly" places. This book can open your eyes to the problem of substance abuse, whether you are in the LGBTQ community or know someone who is. There is no cure to this problem. There is only the awareness that substance abuse exists, and needs to be treated. There may be prevention methods or approaches available, but the person must want to be actively involved in the betterment of himself/herself. Good self-esteem, self-acceptance, and healthy emotional expression are the root of a healthy approach to life, and could interrupt the potential of substance abuse. People need to be more accepting, and homophobia must be faced and accepted for what it is, and not internalized, if the LGBTQ community is to continue to make progress in treating substance abuse. It is encouraging to see more community centers in the LGBTQ community offer various activities that have nothing to do with alcohol or drug use. It is also encouraging to see our nation be more accepting of same sex marriages, as 36 states and the District of Washington now do. Perhaps this increased acceptance of same sex marriage will eventually lead to a decrease in homophobia, and the pain it causes so many in the LGBTQ community.

A great resource By Paul Stevens This book was a statistical slap in the face to anyone who has ever presented their severely frustrated LGBT colleague’s with the challenge of…“Prove it!”There is enough statistical proof in here to sink a fleet of homophobic ships in no time at all. This is more than a resource for anyone who has identified as LGBT; it’s also a great book for the heterosexual community to learn from as well. I’ve had many an argument over statistics that I knew I could see with my own eyes, only to be brushed off because I had no numbers to back it up. This book gives those numbers in black and white, right there on the page for everyone who is seeking to get the real story on what substance abuse has done to the LGBT family. Although, that is not to say that the straight community hasn’t suffered the same problems as well, it just brings to light the increasingly desperate situation that drug and alcohol abuse continues to inflict on the LGBT community and then provides the much needed educational and medical resources links that are in place to help them.Dr Richard Travis kicks opens the doors of statistical reality to illuminate the dark and ignorant world of the non believer. This is not the “Good ol Days” anymore, when everyone was blissfully unaware of the damaging force of substance abuse, not only for LGBT people, but also in the hetero community as well. We sought to glorify drug use and because of that, we have bred a multitude of social, medical and economical problems for ourselves as a result. This is not a fluffy, feel good, look at me and all my problems type of self help book, for those who seek to be nurtured and flattered by the author, oh no, this is raw data backed up by real world evidence, and it’s books like these that should become a part of our kids education requirements, so that when the time comes for them to encounter the world around them and all its problems, then they will already be aware of any and all possible dangers that lurk around every corner. Great book, I recommend it to all concerned parents of LGBT kids who are looking for the truth, literally.

ADDICTION IN THE LGBTQ COMMMUNITY By Jade Maria This book deals with many subjects first of which is alcohol and a quote from the book brings back many memories from my own home town;"Alcohol's popularity is increasing with every generation. We also see a trail of alcoholics in family lines now..."This quote though, really hit home for me;"Alcoholism is a disease, but it's the only disease you get yelled at for having." Mitch Hedber"The sections on LGBT parenting seem fairly accurate considering the outdated attitudes of the past regarding gay parents. I have found myself that two parents seems to be a magic number where kids are concerned, no matter whether they are the same gender or not, a balancing force gives the kids another option to go to. A landslide of medical, health and social dangers looms above the heads of our naïve and unwary LGBT children, we must be vigilant. The lack of transgender studies is also addressed, with a frightening barrage of statistics issued forth regarding this much overlooked area of gender identity, along with the equally over looked bisexual community, who were once told that they should have to pick one or the other and suffered the same abuse that was perpetrated on their forbears in the gay community. This phenomena, has subsided now though and sanity has prevailed along with acceptance of their sexuality.A thorough rundown of topics ranging from LBGT youth problems, all the way through to subjects such as domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual abuse and a wide range of pitfalls encountered by the LGBT community are also addressed.Other problems are brought to light as well, specifically those relating to the lesbian community regarding their frustration at various paternalistic authoritarian types of organisations, who clearly did not take their issues on board when confronted by a problem unheard of in the past. The way forward must occasionally be altered in order to serve the greater community, at least that's what I think anyway. The levels of stress that the gay youth, and even the gay adult population have to deal with is by far higher than the heterosexual community and this continues to this day. Believe it or not I have seen it with my own eyes. There is still a stigma attached to being gay in most of the developed parts of the world, even though it is definitely less prevalent than it was years ago, it is still there among the ignorant, or those easily influenced under peer pressure. The book follows up with alternative treatment programs, warning signs, risk factors and the like along with many other subjects too numerous to go in to here, but a list of the contents section alone will give you an idea of just what important subjects are available inside. Leave this book open on your reading device, or pc app for your children to read, or even friends you know as the health of our family and loved ones is far too important. We must be educated with the right material and this is a convenient source to get it from. There is a wealth of information on treatment alternatives to the AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) if you find the religious leaning of it too much, including a section on meditation, exercise and journaling. Well done to the author on this important work.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. informative and useful. By Garvin I remember reading an article awhile ago about addiction and drug abuse within the native American community. After that I didn’t give it much thought that addiction can be singled out within a specific group of people or community and the possible reason for such a high drug addiction rate. I’m always interested in these kinds of books as I volunteer at an institution that caters to drugs and alcohol addicts and so I come across people from all walks of life. This book will help me more in my dealings with persons from the gay community. Before you try to help someone put yourself in there shoes so you can relate and find the best avenue for delivering the best care, was the person sexually abused, does the person come from a broken home...etc I can see this book really becoming a resource guide for psychologist and counselors in dealing with addiction within the lgbtq community. This book was well research and packed with facts and useful information. I will be referring it to the counselors I come across or anyone with a interest in the LGBTQ community.
