60 of 66 people found the following review helpful. Awkward By akb--bookworm 3-1/2 StarsI can already tell I'm the odd one out on this story. Yes--it was hilarious. Yes--it was very well written. But all the awkwardness just got a bit overwhelming for me. It reminded me of how I felt when I watched Meet the Parents. It was a very funny show and was amazing how it created so many sympathetic feelings in me to the point where I was so uncomfortable watching it I barely finished it and never watched any of the sequels it spawned. Similarly, while reading THE BRO-MAGNET I felt so much of the awkwardness and the embarrassment that I would just groan and not want to continue. This book really made me want to stop reading...and not pick up anything. That's not good, is it? But really, it's kinda crazy that this book created such strong feelings in me isn't?Johnny Smith is a man's man, every man's friend, every man's best man (no, really. He's been a Best Man going on 8 times or so.) Every man wants to be his friend. Women? Uh, well, women tend to pass. When Johnny meets DA Helen Troy, he's determined to NOT "just be himself" since no woman ever wants Johnny as he is so he goes about reinventing himself with the help of his friend's wife. He once loved the Mets, the Jets, his weekly poker game, and the hula girl lamp that hangs over his basement pool table. But now, he loves opera, doesn't like sports, has a cat (that he walks like a dog), and throw pillows (and no hula girl lamp.) But what happens if Johnny finally gets the girl to like him if Johnny isn't himself?This story was quite hilarious. Johnny has never quite grown up. Women just don't seem to get him. I loved hearing his stories, his examples, from his childhood and dating life. He is super smart, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and has a fascination with legal loopholes. I loved him the way he was. It was a bit heartbreaking for me to watch him change everything about him that his friend's wife (who has pretty much hated Johnny her entire life) into HER version of the perfect man.This story doesn't take itself seriously at all, which what helps make it even funnier. There are characters named Steve Miller (Steve Miller Band?), Monte Carlo (who doesn't understand why his name would be funny,) and of course Helen Troy (Johnny's lady he has launched a new lifestyle for.)So why if I thought this story was so funny am I only giving it 3-1/2 stars? It all goes back to that ill at ease feeling I had while reading a majority of the story. Once Johnny meets Helen, he just kept changing so much of himself and not thinking; it was like we were witnessing his awkward teenage years that he never really had because he never really cared too much about trying to date as a teenager. Every time he got together with Helen, I would groan and think to myself "this isn't going to go well."Even though I finished the story, I found myself stopping and not wanting to read anymore because of the unpleasant feelings. He just kept doing the same stupid things and the same stupid deception for so long that I just wanted it to be over with. It was hard to feel like I even really got to know Helen either. And, once all the cards are on the table, the book abruptly ends! Ugh! But really, it's a credit to how well the author wrote this story that it created such strong feelings in me--it's just that I read for enjoyment and the feelings weren't comfortable. Obviously, I'm weird.So, there you have it; a funny, hilarious, and awkward story about a man's man who tries to reinvent himself for the woman of his dreams. If you liked the movie Meet the Parents then you will love this story.

Without giving away anything, the transformation of lucky-in-friends, unlucky-in-love Johnny into something he is apparently not is the kind of story I love and Lauren Baratz-Logsted creates some very likable characters that had me cheering for them to both be who they are and to grow up. Yeah, it's a pretty rich book.Bro-Magnet is kind of the story of all of us, men struggling with their feminine side and women struggling with the masculine. The book is fresh take on the whole thing. And, oh hell, the 'night at the opera' chapter alone is worth the price of admission. Amazing fun and funny!

Gardens You know you're in good hands when a book begins like this:"Right from the start, I've been a disappointment to women. Here's me at my own birth..."I don't know how books go about getting filmed, but The Bro-Magnet would make a movie at least a hundred times better than the silly and immature stuff that makes up the whole "bromance" genre these days. It's solid, smart, grown-up fun.Heck. Never mind the movies. Just read the book.
