Version 2 features nine new tutorials introducing new channel types, single-channel simulations, and a redesigned interface. Neurons in Action s moving graphs provide insight into nerve function that is simply not possible with conventional, static text and figure presentations. Students discover how changing parameters such a neuronal geometry, ion concentrations, ion channel densities, and degree of myelination affects the generation of action potentials, synaptic potentials, and the spread or propagation of voltages within a neuron. For instructors, minimovies of NEURON simulations are provided for use in lectures.

Neurons in Action 2: Tutorials and Simulations using NEURON Download, by John W. Moore, Anne E. Stuart

Review In this carefully designed book, John Moore and Ann Stuart demystify the basics of nerve function through a series of logical and well-written text-based tutorials with accompanying computer simulations... The computer-based format is ideal for professors and teaching assistants to use in the classroom. The inclusion of classic experimental papers on the CD also makes the experience somewhat of a history lesson as well... The entire simulation environment is contained on the CD, can be easily installed locally on a PC or Mac, and runs quickly using Mozilla Firefox... Overall, Moore and Stuart certainly have created a highly recommendable method for learning and teaching neurophysiology. Readers can now, from the comfort of their own homes, finally vanquish those former physiology demons in a fun and interactive manner and learn a bit of history, too. --Arjun V. Masurkar, Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine

NIA 2 is a true gift to those interested in neuroscience By Mad Dog NIA2 is an incredibly useful training tool to take the neuroscience enthusiast into the lab, without ever having to leave the comfort of their own computer. The individual tutorials are written in a manner that make them easy to follow, very informative, pleasantly written and extremely educational. The developers are a family that apparently spent a great deal of time thinking through the challenges and concepts surrounding neuronal signaling. I don't know the developers but I can't help to think they are some of the best educators of this subject. The tutorials build on one another and give the student a real sense of achievement as they learn about this subject in a very well-designed and progressive manner. I was truly saddened when I finished the tutorials and only hope for a second edition.I think anyone interested in grasping the difficult concept of neuronal signaling will benefit tremendously from this program. The reference section alone is worth the price of the product.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. best way to learn neurophysiology! By JunLiu Neurons in Action was the "textbook" used for an upper level Neurobiology course I took at Williams College. The interactive nature of NIA made the course one of the most engaging learning experiences I ever had as an undergraduate. Although several years have passed since I graduated, I have retained the material I learned from NIA as compared to many other courses that were simply lecture based. On a side note, I think the negative comment on this product that is solely shipping related is unwarranted.

Psychoanalysts must be patients for years before they can practice. The "talking cure"--the basis of all psychotherapy--is best explained from two perspectives: one patient lying on the couch and the other seated behind it. The author of this memoir was both. He candidly discusses his own analysis, describing his emotional misfires and their causes. He then uses case studies from his practice to elucidate the meaning of dreams, the causes of neuroses, depression, relationship problems and other issues that affect the lives of many.

By frank queen This is a fine collection of essays on how a psychoanalyst reacts to the folks who talk to him all day long. Along the way, the author takes the individual stories and weaves an entertaining narrative of the nature of our minds -- how we stick to our habits whether they are good for us or not, how we finally come to need a change in our thinking. Freudian theories are pretty central, but the real focus of the book is on the sheer humanity of the ranchers and townspeople of Durango, Colorado who trusted the author, a Chicago transplant, to help them. His voice is a clear -- and often funny -- response to their stories.

It's easy to take some of his memorable stories and change a name or a date ... and YOU are in that chapter. Terrific personal experiences that teach. This is not a new theme for Joyce; his earlier "Pucker Factor 10," his memoir of being a chopper pilot in Viet Nam, brought those scary and sometimes ironic experiences home. As I told a few pals when I gifted "The Mind...." book: "Read this. You might just learn a part of your inner self. "

Jim Joyce gives us a personal account of how he entered this field and of some of the patients he treated. He subtitles The Mind and I "Reflections of a Psychoanalyst," but also offers in his discussions a mirror for reflecting on ourselves. I've read Jim Joyce's other books, but this one was my favorite. Loaded with humor and personal anecdote.

Interesting Reading By Ana Madiedo I had read a couple of books by Elinor Glynn (in Spanish translations) when I was a very young woman (circa early 1950's) and loved them. This particular novel is romantic and sweet and also very well written; considering she wrote it 100 years ago I thought it was pretty much modern for the times.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. another success from Ms. Glyn By K. Kennedy "Halcyone" by Elinor Glyn is a novel about a young girl who grows up in a sheltered environment to be wiser and purer than the society around her. The outcome of the novel is never really in doubt, but Ms. Glyn writes a beautiful tale along the way. Sadly, Ms. Glyn's novels are difficult to find these days.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 5 Bright Stars***** By Dee Montoya "It's human nature to glance over the fence and wonder what if... Some people go through life without ever finding out what they're looking for, without ever knowing how lucky they are."Georgia Bristol had big dreams for her future but we plan and God laughs and so, her life didn't turn out like she thought it would; it's still a great life but she harbors some regrets and "what ifs." She has a beautiful family, a stable marriage and wonderful friends but what about her dreams and goals? How many of us imagined ourselves in an incredibly adventurous and fascinating journey through life? Remember those young years when you are about to graduate high school and are wide eyed, eager and ready to embark in a big life full of possibilities? But does it always turns out the way we hope? Do you ever dream about going back and changing anything from you past, saying or doing things differently? Sorry, that's a lot of questions, I know! But in fact, I think most of us think about what could have been so much, that it prevents us from really enjoying the lives we got.I got married very young (21) and right away became a mother, now twelve years later I often wonder, who am I without my husband and kids, what else could I be or do if I wasn't somebody's mother or wife? Even on those hard days when life is going against me, I do (cringe) find myself daydreaming about being alone if only for a few hours where I didn't have to worry about somebody else's needs before mine. This beautiful story gave me that, an inside look into what my life could be and it also taught me a valuable lesson; which is, to stop every once in a while and admire the beauty around my life. We need to stop yearning for what never was and appreciate what is. I know that everyone who reads this story will be able to relate to it on one way or other. When I was reading The Space between, Georgia's journey became mine. Her doubts, fears and tears showed me a new perspective into my own life. This is a very simple yet powerful story.I first became a fan of Nikki Mathis Thompson after reading her first book, Rebound. Her writing style has a lot of soul and a genuine quality to it that makes you feel as if a close friend is telling you her stories over coffee. She's very sweet and approachable and every person I have ever recommended her books to, always loves them, so I've collected a lot of brownie points with a lot of people in my life, thanks to her books. The Space Between felt like an homage to us women who put ourselves last in our list of priorities, so Thank You Nikki for inspiring me, for following your heart and sharing this amazing gift of a book with us and most of all ,thanks for the ride into the other side...

By missmickee/bookreview A very unique and originally crafted story: "The Space Between" (2015) is authored by Nikki Mathis Thompson. The question of "what if?" is explored along with life options and possibilities, in this surprising blend of romance and women's fiction. The story took place in a small unnamed Texas farming town with a gas station and Dairy Queen. Georgia was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class, and very much in love with her steady guy Brady Carmichael, both were headed for a University education, Georgia on a full scholarship. Brady decided it would be best if they not continue such a serious relationship before heading off to college, when he ended their relationship Georgia was heartbroken. At a party one night, she found some solace and comfort with Nate Bristol, and the story took a strong dramatic turn when Georgia realized she was pregnant. Most people in these times consider the shot-gun wedding an event of yester-year, the times from the 1950's-1960's when pregnant women had few options outside of marriage or adoption. This story is how Georgia's life was altered by unexpected circumstances as were the lives of Brady Carmichael and Nate Bristol. Georgia found herself in a type of alternative reality after she ended up lost in a small town, and encountered Gwen, a seer, who gave her a special blend of tea that allowed her to examine her choices, and a future spin as to what may have been, or not. I thoroughly enjoyed highly creative and unforgettable story!Nikki Mathis Thompson studied at the University of Texas at Dallas where she earned a business degree. A freelance writer, "The Space Between" is her fifth novel. She lives near Dallas, TX with her family.

By Redheadchick From the very first time I read one of Nikki Mathis Thompson's books, she instantly became one of my favorite authors. Her writing style sucks you in and has you feeling all kinds of emotions and laughter. The Space Between is her latest book, I was one of the lucky ones to get an ARC.From the minute you start reading, you feel a familiarity. Even though my story or your story isn't the same as Georgia's, as a woman we all got through "what if's" and "if only". This book is such an amazing exploration of a woman's character and feeling. Through Georgia's journey you see how life is a series of choices and our happiness is dependent not on others, but on our own perception and point of view on things. Sometimes past relationships or experiences can be clouded by a skewed perception of things and if given the chance to go back and change things, we would see the grass is not greener on the other side.I wish there was a 10 star rating as this book deserves more than 5 stars. Thank you Nikki for writing an amazing woman's journey to discovery that makes you think of things differently.Don't miss out on a beautifully written book that will keep you wanting more.

The Collected Papers of Roger Money-Kyrle (The Harris Meltzer Trust Series), by Roger Money-Kyrle

Review "Roger Money-Kyrle belonged to the English tradition of the first quarter of the twentieth century, a time of wide horizons, and his project was correspondingly ample--an attempt to understand man and the world man makes for himself. He used the knowledge of psychoanalysis to illumine areas in biology, anthropology, politics, ethics and history, in addition to making contributions to clinical and theoretical psychoanalysis itself." (Edna O'Shaughnessy, from the Prefatory Note)"The rectification of man’s model of his world involves a transformation of values, for while the truth may liberate people from persecutory anxieties, it imposes upon them love for the worlds both inner and outer, and consequent guilt for the damage caused by their greed and destructive envy. This seems to me to be the essence of Money-Kyrle's wisdom and, like Socrates who knew how little he knew, no man is wiser than he. Where I learned psychoanalytic theory and technique from others, I learned the meaning of psychoanalysis as a thing-in-the-world from him." (Donald Meltzer, from the Editor's Introduction)

About the Author Donald Meltzer (1923–2004) is widely known as a psychoanalyst and teacher throughout Europe and South America. He is the author of many works on psychoanalytic theory and practice, including The Psychoanalytical Process, Sexual States of Mind, Explorations in Autism, The Kleinian Development, Dream Life, Studies in Extended Metapsychology, and The Claustrum.

Publisher's Comments By A Customer Thirty five papers from a variety of intellectual journals trace fifty years of distinguished service to psycho-analysis, sociology, politics and anthropology. The author of such well known books as "Superstition and Society" (Hogarth, 1939)." Psychoanalysis and Politics" (Duckworth, 1951) AND "Man's Picture of his World" (Duckworth, 1961) has embodied in his experience and thought the history of psychoanalysis to date. Having been analysed by Freud, Ernest Jones and Melanie Klein at different periods of his scientific development in more recent years he has taken full account of the work of W. R. Bion. Mr. Money-Kyrle's wide and varied experience of people, places and modes of thought have made him a unique figure bridging the often isolated worlds of psychoanalysis, politics, philosophy and social sciences. A vivid and entertaining autobiographic sketch traces his development in this volume, Which also contain such famous papers as "The Psychology of Propaganda", "Psycho-anlysis and Ethics", "Normal Counter-transference and Some of its Deviations", "Cognitive Development" and "The Aims of Psychoanalysis".

Palmer's incisive new novel both celebrates and skewers modern relationships and their milestones, offering a witty and wise look at what it takes to commit--to love, to a home, and to the life that's right for you. After three years of dating and trading nights at their respective New York City apartments, Emma Feit and Nick O'Hare are moving in together. Or they will be, as soon as they find the right place. For two happily-in-love professionals--Nick's a teacher, Emma tutors college-bound teens--with good credit and stellar references, how hard can it be? As it turns out, very--in ways that are completely unexpected. Suddenly Emma is filled with questions about cohabiting, about giving up her freedom--not to mention about who's going to clean the toilet. And while her best friend plans a dream wedding to her wealthy fiancé, and her older brother settles into suburban bliss, Emma must figure out what home means to her--and how on earth to get there.

Palmer’s first novel, Pretty in Ink and was expecting If We Lived Here to be a light, fluffy rom-com filled with cute stories of a couple’s first attempt at cohabitation before marriage.Uh….no.IWLH is a deeper story where two characters, Nick and Emma, examine their relationship completely while trying to find an apartment in New York City. There is very minimal fluff and no cute stories, although there is an obligatory trip to IKEA where the couple cannot agree on Swedish goods. Since I started reading the novel with the idea that the story was going to be a certain way based on the back cover summary, I was extremely disappointed in the plot. What I loved: Emma’s best friend and family and their stereotypical New York “Jew-ness”. Is that even a word? Seriously, the reading voices in my head were excited when there were scenes featuring the best friend, Annie, and the sister-in-law, Alysse. I think I would have preferred to read an entire book about Annie. What I didn’t love: Nick and Emma. Neither character seemed very likable and very immature. Maybe its because I was in a completely different place when I was their age (30) but both characters did not seem ready to make any commitment, much less to a 1 year lease. What I learned: Manhattan real estate is beyond me…

Review: 'If We Lived Here' by Lindsey Palmer By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" After having been together for roughly three years, thirty-somethings Emma Feit and Nick O'Hare are ready for the next step: finding a new place and moving in together. However, the search for the perfect New York apartment, within a particular budget, isn't the easiest task, especially not when you're doing it next to a full-time job. While Nick is a primary school teacher, Emma tutors high school students who are in the middle of their college application process, which already demands a lot of her time. However, Emma is determined to find that amazing apartment for her and Nick, even when doubt comes around the corner and both of them start to wonder whether this is really what they want.Lindsey J. Palmer's 'If We Lived Here' is a contemporary story focusing on a topic many readers will be able to relate to: moving in together, and both the positive and negative experiences that come with it. Emma and Nick are ready to take the next step in their relationship, but while they are both excited to find their own perfect apartment and start building their lives together, the decision also comes with uncertainty and fear; will this really work, is this the person I really want to be with? The author has certainly managed to give a realistic portrayal of a modern-day relationship, and I liked both Emma and Nick and found myself rooting for them to make it work together. The author's writing style flowed easily and was comfortable to read, even though I wouldn't have minded a bit more dialogue. While I liked the basic plotline of this novel and the characters, I couldn't help but feel as if not much was really going on to keep my attention. The story is told from both Emma's and Nick's perspective, but it seemed like it didn't really have a purpose. I would personally have loved more focus on Emma's best friend's wedding or Emma's job helping high school students with their college applications (which would make a great novel in itself, I think); something else next to the search for their new home. On the whole, though, I thought 'If We Lived Here' was an honest, well-written and realistic contemporary women's fiction read that was definitely promising and entertaining at times; it just didn't completely live up to my own expectations of the novel.

Has all the warmth of a cozy blanket in front of the fire By Chick Lit Central By Gail AllisonEmma and Nick are completely ready to take the next step in their relationship and move in together. Probably.Emma is a go-getter whose current role at ‘1...2...3...Ivies!’ is helping high schoolers (and their ever-present helicopter parents) navigate the admissions process to hopefully help them gain admission to the school of their dreams. Nick is less of a self-starter, but is happy with his current role as a fifth grade teacher. When Emma and Nick decide to move in together they have no idea the variety of pitfalls that they could be facing. After all, they’re in love and they have good credit. What more could they need? When the story opens, Emma has found them a brilliant apartment with gorgeous hardwood floors, his and hers walk-in closets, and an affordable price tag. Of course, you know the saying: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. When they don’t get the place, Emma and Nick have to learn to lean on each other while not only keeping their own lives moving along, but trying to find a new place together and figuring out if this is really the right move at the right time for them.I really enjoyed how the author juxtaposed this point in Emma and Nick’s relationship and the growing pains it was going through against the secondary characters in the book. Max (Emma’s older brother) is happily married with a wife who has some serious Stepford qualities about her. Max and Alysse have two kids with another on the way, and although Max is painted as the established, in-control sibling, we find out later in the book that perhaps that’s not the best thing. Emma’s dear friend Annie is just getting married as the book opens, so we get to see the early marriage of Annie and Eli. And Emma’s other friend Genevieve is happily (she claims) single, so we get a fantastic view of a whole spectrum of relationship phases, including Emma and Nick’s.I especially liked how Ms. Palmer let each relationship (including the main characters’) grow and develop on its own. I find that a few authors focus so heavily on the main characters’ circumstances that any secondary characters’ situations almost start to feel stagnant by the end of the book. That was completely not the case here. I looked forward to Annie and Eli’s updates as much as I enjoyed the main storyline with Nick and Emma. They were all written as real people with real lives, real feelings, and real problems. Well done on that front, Ms. Palmer! For some reason I had trouble starting this one, but once I was a couple of chapters in it was much easier to get lost in the story. I kind of wonder if it’s the simple reason that I’ve just never had to go apartment hunting in the big city. In any case, once I got into the story of this novel I was hooked. If you’re planning on taking a look at If We Lived Here, and you’re not convinced by the fifth page, please give it five more. Trust me. At some points it felt like I was helping Nick and Emma navigate the real estate of New York and I’ve never even been there! If We Lived Here was a lovely story about a couple finding a real home, not just a place stay, and because of that underlying sentiment, this book had all the warmth of a cozy blanket in front of the fire. Delightful!Originally posted on chicklitcentral.com
