This book has potential but is poorly organized and written, with factual inaccuracies and is confusing often times. The author really needs to review management guidelines and clear up loose and misleading information.I've only read the first 100 pages but have found several mistakes I'm not sure how much more I will readWill update if I continue.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. there is no perfect single book for CK, this is better than others, and knowledge is uptodate. By chong weng well, honestly, this is not as perfectly as FA in step 1. but i recommend it and rank is the first for CK test cause there is no perfect single book cover all the staff in CK. you will find its beauty after you finish the UW first time. There is still many Step 1 knowledge tested on CK, so i suggest combined with FA step1 cause the wired diseases in step1 still show on CK.(FA of CK is far far less useful than FA Step1, less important than MTB.when you were in the year of 2010 or earlier, the MTB 2&3 will be enough. but the ck is getting harder and harder. MTB only tell you how to answer the question, they do not give you the knowledge for preparation, besides, the new version is almost the same as the older one, many outdate and old treatments are still there.step up to medicine is kind of condense of internal book, very good, easily readding, give you lots of informations. but the biggest problems is they do not tell you what is next step, best next things,).after all, i suggest combined with Yale-G and UW (update timely), then wikipedia, then use the UPTODATE, and the pocket of MGH. the differential diagnosis is the key part of test.if you have time, do the kaplan qbank (rarely update even you email them) and notes (excluded IM); still more time, do the MKSAP (for IM).

Insights from Philip Yancey’s personal pilgrimage away from and back to the church. Why are there so many more professing Christians than churchgoing Christians? Is it because something is wrong with the church? In his candid, thought-provoking manner, award-winning author Philip Yancey reveals the reasons behind his own journey back from skepticism to wholehearted participation in the church, and weighs the church’s human failings against its compelling worth as the body of Christ. Yancey does not whitewash the church’s faults, rather he sets them against the overwhelming balance of its strengths: its heart for God, its care for the hurting, its outreach to the lost, and its value as family and community.

Church: Why Bother?, by Philip Yancey

From the Publisher Philip Yancey asks the question that haunts many believers: Why should I bother with the church? From growing up in rural Georgia in a fundamentalist church to his experience at LaSalle Street Church in inner city Chicago, Philip reflects on the church, his own perceptions of it, and the various metaphors the Bible uses to describe it. Yancey's own early church experience set his faith back by many years. In Church: Why Bother? he offers us a glimpse of his pilgrimage back to faith and to the church as a place of real community and spiritual vitality. This honest and insightful book will help you explore your questions about the place of the church in the life of faith and how to find spiritual connection and community.

From the Author Philip Yancey serves as editor at Large for Christianity Today magazine. His books The Jesus I Never Knew and What's So Amazing About Grace? were national best-sellers appearing on both the Publisher's Weekly and ECPA lists. Disappointment with God, and The Gift of Pain. He co-edited The Student Bible, which also won a Gold Medallion Award. He and his wife live in Colorado.

How to worship despite being in church By David Graham Everyone who has attended church with regularity can understand boredom and indifference among the congregants. Services are often not conducive to worship. Avoiding an abstract, depersonalized discussion of the matter, Philip Yancey relates his own reflections and experiences during his Christian pilgrimage. Rather than going to church services wondering how they will minister to US, we should go to church services to worship GOD. Our attention should be directed outward ("How did God view my worship?") rather than inward ("I got nothing out of that church service.") Sometimes, perhaps most times, we have to conduct our worship of God DESPITE being in church. But that is what we should do. I liked this personalized and down-to-earth approach of one layman talking to another. (One is reminded of C.S. Lewis's REFLECTIONS ON THE PSALMS where Lewis says he is not presuming to instruct, he is merely comparing notes, like two school boys talking shop and helping each other over difficulties their schoolmaster has long forgotten about.) I enjoyed Eugene Peterson's Foreword too. This easily readable book (only 100 pages long) is good for personal reading as well as group discussion.

By Thomas J Wilson For those on the inside who wonder what the church is doing, and those on the outside who criticize the church for not doing better, this book is highly recommended. In his musings, Yancey is insightfully aware of the foibles and and foibles of the church in all of it's humanness, yet he also declares that the church is the means God has chosen to be in the world today. As he wrote in "What's So Amazing About Grace," "I left the church because I found so little grace there. I came back because I found grace nowhere else." I'm buying a copy for each member of the session.

In his three chapters he gives all those who are cynical about the church a view of the church that is refreshing. He reminds the reader of what the church CAN be and what difference it can make. The second chapter had to be the most innovative (as Yancey always is) with his contemporary images of the church, describing the church the way the apostle Paul might if he were writing in the late 20th century. After reading the chapter I am no longer ashamed to admit that I too have a "crutch" faith. In his 3rd chapter, Yancey meanders and doesn't conclude with a bang. The climax is found right in the middle of this short book. If you have a friend who lives by the motto: "Jesus, Yes...Church, No." please get them this book.

For more than a century, Nietzsche's views about Jews and Judaism have been subject to countless polemics. The Nazis infamously fashioned the philosopher as their anti-Semitic precursor, while in the past thirty years the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. The increasingly popular view today is that Nietzsche was not only completely free of racist tendencies but also was a principled adversary of anti-Jewish thought. Nietzsche's Jewish Problem offers a definitive reappraisal of the controversy, taking the full historical, intellectual, and biographical context into account. As Robert Holub shows, a careful consideration of all the evidence from Nietzsche's published and unpublished writings and letters reveals that he harbored anti-Jewish prejudices throughout his life.

Nietzsche's Jewish Problem demonstrates how this is so despite the apparent paradox of the philosopher's well-documented opposition to the crude political anti-Semitism of the Germany of his day. As Holub explains, Nietzsche's "anti-anti-Semitism" was motivated more by distaste for vulgar nationalism than by any objection to anti-Jewish prejudice.

A richly detailed account of a controversy that goes to the heart of Nietzsche's reputation and reception, Nietzsche's Jewish Problem will fascinate anyone interested in philosophy, intellectual history, or the history of anti-Semitism.

Nietzsche's Jewish Problem: Between Anti-Semitism and Anti-Judaism, by Robert C. Holub

From the Back Cover

"When the theme of Nietzsche's anti-Semitism arises, moderation and sobriety fall by the wayside, and irrational exuberance, 'for' or 'against,' wins out--a situation that helps to explain why most attempts to assess this highly controversial aspect of Nietzsche's legacy have been so sterile and superficial. In Nietzsche's Jewish Problem, the esteemed Germanist Robert Holub breaks free of this vicious circle. He provides a refreshingly fair-minded, meticulous, and judicious reconstruction of Nietzsche's confrontation with the so-called Jewish Question. Holub's book will likely become the standard work on the fraught question of Nietzsche's attitudes toward Jews and Judaism for years to come."--Richard Wolin, author of Heidegger's Children

"Judiciously avoiding the extremes of relentless prosecution or wholesale exoneration, Robert Holub draws on a wealth of unexplored sources to revisit the vexed question of Nietzsche's attitude toward the Jews. Acknowledging the philosopher's outspoken hostility to the anti-Semitism of his day, he demonstrates nonetheless that Nietzsche shared many of its characteristic prejudices, and added a few new ones of his own. Among the surprising results of Holub's scrupulous research is a more nuanced picture of Nietzsche's sister's alleged responsibility for the distortion of his ideas."--Martin Jay, University of California, Berkeley

"Nietzsche's Jewish Problem promises to be the definitive account of Nietzsche's relation to Jews and Judaism for some time to come. In lucid and compelling prose, Robert Holub offers a provocative reappraisal of Nietzsche that forces us to confront how he managed to mix sustained anti-Jewish views with a rejection of anti-Semitic politics. No one seriously interested in the German intellectual tradition can afford to ignore this book."--Jonathan M. Hess, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

"Nietzsche's Jewish Problem substantially reshapes our understanding of Nietzsche's relationship to Jews and anti-Semitism. Carefully researched, well-reasoned, nuanced, and eminently clear, the book will be of wide interest to scholars and general readers."--Martha Helfer, Rutgers University

About the Author Robert C. Holub is Ohio Eminent Scholar and Professor of German at Ohio State University and former chancellor of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The author of several books on nineteenth- and twentieth-century German literary, cultural, and intellectual history, he is also the editor of editions of Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morals and Beyond Good and Evil.

Review Craig S. Keener — Asbury Theological Seminary “This very readable textbook provides a helpful and balanced introduction to text criticism aimed at just the right level for beginning students. It is clear, introduces multiple views, gives good reasons for the approaches it favors, and — an unexpected bonus — offers in two relevant chapters useful, concise introductions to canon formation and translation theory.”  Michael J. Kruger — Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte  “Because of the complexity of the field of textual criticism, most introductions are either too detailed or too basic. This exceptional volume by Stanley Porter and Andrew Pitts provides a welcome balance between these two extremes, introducing students to all the critical issues without overloading them with unnecessary detail. It also covers topics that most introductions overlook, such as the development of the New Testament canon and modern English translations. For anyone looking for a balanced, thorough, and yet readable introduction to textual criticism, this is it.”J. K. Elliott — University of Leeds “Newcomers to the Greek New Testament will find this guide a useful introduction explaining how the establishing of the text is undertaken. It also gives insight into the treasures awaiting a perceptive user concerning textual variants found in the manuscript tradition.”  Craig A. Evans — Acadia Divinity College   “This is no ordinary introduction to textual criticism. In addition to offering explanations of the criteria and the critical apparatus, Porter and Pitts explain in very practical ways what the discipline tries to do and the thinking that lies behind it. As a bonus readers are treated to up-to-date discussion of the formation of the canon of Scripture, the nature of the materials used in the production of ancient books, and a history of the English Bible and the theories of translation on which translations are based. The book is rich with examples and insights.”David Alan Black — Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary  “Fundamentals of New Testament Textual Criticism is an excellent treatise on a vitally important subject. Stanley Porter and Andrew Pitts were seeking to produce a textbook that falls midway between Bruce Metzger’s Text of the New Testament and my own New Testament Textual Criticism: A Concise Guide, and they have succeeded brilliantly. . . . Their careful research deepens our understanding of the role of textual criticism in exegesis, and I am confident that this book of theirs will be widely used both inside and outside of the classroom.”  Eckhard Schnabel — Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary “Porter and Pitts have admirably achieved what they set out to do — provide a succinct introduction to the manuscript tradition of the Greek New Testament for first- and second-year students of Koine Greek. . . . This book is ideal both for students in classrooms and for general readers who seek reliable information about the origins and the text of the New Testament.”  Thomas J. Kraus — University of Zurich “In this book Stanley E. Porter and Andrew W. Pitts take interested students by the hand and introduce them to the essentials of New Testament textual criticism. . . . They provide welcome, concise assessments of external and internal evidence for judging textual variants. . . . A very useful tool for instructing students in New Testament textual criticism.”

About the Author Stanley E. Porter is president, dean, and professor of New Testament at McMaster Divinity College, Hamilton, Ontario, and coauthor of Fundamentals of New Testament Greek, a companion to this volume.  Andrew W. Pitts is assistant professor of biblical studies at Arizona Christian University in Phoenix.

Wood Stanley Porter and Andrew Pitts describe their Fundamentals of New Testament Textual Criticism as a “distinctively midlevel textbook on New Testament textual criticism for interested and serious students and with recent scholarly discussion in pertinent areas in mind.” It is, in other words, a textbook for students in college and graduate school who are majoring in New Testament studies. Why, then, do I think pastors and other Christian thought leaders should read this book too?To answer that, go back with me to 2003, when Dan Brown published The Da Vinci Code. Although the book is fiction, Brown prefaced it with these words: “All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate.” Unfortunately, many of Brown’s allegedly “accurate” claims—especially about the Bible, Christian theology, and church history—were simply wrong, sometimes at the most basic, factual level.Regardless, those claims nevertheless left an impression on readers. Understandably so! Many readers nodded their heads when Leigh Teabing, one of the book’s characters, said this about the Bible: “Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book.” In other words, powerful people monkeyed around with the text of the Bible in order to confer divine status on their preferred ideology. Two years later, Bart D. Ehrman published Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why. Unlike Brown, who is a novelist, Ehrman is James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman wrote, “There are more variations among our manuscripts than there are words in the New Testament.” And one of the reasons for that is what Ehrman elsewhere calls “the orthodox corruption of Scripture.” In other words, the orthodox altered the text of the New Testament in order to give themselves a “biblical” weapon to use against heretics. Now, imagine that you are a well-meaning Christian and you read The Da Vinci Code. It raises questions about the accuracy of the New Testament text. Your pastors say it’s bunk, but then you read Misquoting Jesus, and you start to wonder whether they know what they’re talking about. And then you start to wonder whether the Bible itself is trustworthy.Notice how quickly a fictional narrative can lead to a factual question with serious spiritual implications. Pastors who are unaware of the questions percolating in popular culture and unprepared to provide serious, well-thought-out answers to them are not serving members of their congregation well. At some level, then, pastors must know how to answer the kinds of questions raised by Dan Brown’s and Bart Ehrman’s statements.Which brings me back to Fundamentals of New Testament Textual Criticism. In this book, Porter and Pitts provide readers with a nuts-and-bolts explanation of that discipline. They define the goal of textual criticism as the “reconstruction of the original the [New Testament] documents based upon the manuscript traditions currently available.” They then walk readers through major witnesses to the New Testament text and the various text-types that arose over the centuries. They define what a textual variant is and outline how external and internal evidence help decide what the original text most likely said. They then conclude with their discussion with several chapters on modern critical editions of the Greek New Testament, as well as translations of it into English. With the exception of a brief (and to my mind, conclusive) refutation of Bart Ehrman’s orthodox-corruption-of-Scripture thesis, the tone of the book is introductory rather than apologetic. Nonetheless, their introduction of the discipline of textual criticism has apologetic implications. If we can recover the original text of the New Testament with reasonable confidence, then we can be reasonably confident that it has not been corrupted for political (Dan Brown’s point) or theological (Bart Ehrman’s point) purposes. In other words, when we read the New Testament, we have access to the worldview, beliefs, and practices of Jesus’ earliest disciples. I would further argue that in having access to them, we have access to Him.Again, Porter and Pitts do not make these apologetic points. Their focus is on introducing the discipline to students, and they do this well and objectively. Anyone interested in the textual criticism of the New Testament thus will find accurate information here. Still, as a minister, I can’t help but think that this introduction is capable of inoculating readers against certain viruses of the mind about the Bible contained in both pop culture and certain academic quarters.

Good Stuff By Bryce The authors definitely have a conservative spin (e.g. taking shots at Bart Ehrman among other things), but they still present an academic understanding of New Testament Textual Criticism (i.e., Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11 are scribal additions & Byzantine Text-Types are inferior).

It is fatally flawed with multiple elementary errors -- for example the the profoundly wrong list on page 50 (2,911 majuscules?? And the authors and proof-readers didn't realize that this was ridiculous??), and the mix-up about who compiled the Majority Text (it was Hodges and Farstad, not Pickering), and the absurd claim that Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11 have "little manuscript support." (Mark 16:9-20 is in over 99% of the Greek manuscripts of Mark; John 7:53-8:11 is in 85%.)Besides being peppered with careless mistakes when writing on-subject, the authors incessantly drift off-subject, discussing several subjects which, while perfectly fine subjects, are not subjects which fall under the category of New Testament textual criticism. These peripheral concerns occupy several whole chapters. If you are looking for an accurate, balanced, detailed introduction to the fundamentals of New Testament textual criticism, look elsewhere. This book should never have been published in such flawed condition.

A lot of good information was given. The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star was because many people who are depressed suffer from "Clinical depression" and I thought there was not very much in the way of dealing with it medically in this book, and some people just can NOT get out of depression unless they are helped by medicine. The author clearly state up from that she is not trying to replace the advice given by doctors and in fact states that the doctor is your first place to start with to see if there are any medication side effects or health concerns contributing to depression. And after that to go to a physiatrist. But as I said a lot of good information was given to help many people caught up in depression. Wow - I was surprised to find out from this author that 1 out of 10 people suffer from depression. I did appreciate the fact that the author never talked down to those who suffer with depression, but was always encouraging and informative. The author gets into examining root causes for depression, the value of having positive affirmations, having a support system of friends and family and fighting through and working through depression in various ways. Later in the book the author gave some practical exercises for those stuck in depression to get there mind heading in the right direction.
