1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. little too large By A. Mann I have been getting these for years and they are very helpful. However, I somehow got the "larger print version" and it does not safely fit into the breviary. I much prefer the smaller ones I can tuck into the pocket.

But it was not identified on Amazon as the large print edition. If you want the regular sized print edition do not buy this one.

Patient Studies in Valvular, Congenital and Rarer Forms of Cardiovascular Disease: An Integrative Approach, by Franklin B. Saksena

Review

“This book will challenge the problem-solver, improve the reader's knowledge of cardiology, and help prepare the trainee for the cardiology board examination. Its specific strong points include an attractive cover, paper of high-grade stock, excellent colored illustrations, well-constructed diagrams and tables, an assortment of worthwhile images, and a wealth of detailed and practical information on a wide variety of valvular, congenital, and rare forms of cardiovascular disease. Especially useful are the discussion, key points, and references that conclude most of the patient studies.”  (Texas Heart Institute Journal, 1 August 2015)

From the Back Cover

A number of cardiology training programs emphasize coronary artery disease whilst neglecting other aspects of cardiology such as valvular, congenital heart or vascular disease. This book attempts to redress this imbalance by reiterating the importance of history and physical findings in detecting valvular, congenital or vascular disease and to correlate the clinical findings to invasive and non-invasive studies. This approach will be useful to cardiologists in training particularly those sitting the Cardiology Board examinations, where recognition of auscultatory findings is now a requirement, and those with an interest in problem solving. Each of the 90+ patient studies follows a templated design and consists of: history, physical examination, phonocardiography (whenever possible), ECG, Chest X-ray, echocardiography, hemodynamics, and, sometimes, angiography. These sections may or may not be randomized and readers are challenged to write an interpretation on each section as well as answering self-test questions posed in the legends. Patient studies have been arranged in approximately chronological order from 1966-2013 with emphasis on establishing a likely diagnosis based on the available tools then in existence. Test your problem solving skills, improve your knowledge, and prepare for Boards, with this collection of unusual and challenging patient studies focused on the physical diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. This book:

  • Contains over 90 case histories with self-test questions designed to test the reader’s knowledge and also reinforce clinical best practices
  • Focuses on diseases of valvular, vascular or congenital origin, and on comparatively rare disorders/diseases, rather than coronary artery disease, to help readers improve their skills at interpreting and making decisions based on physical examination and basic, non-invasive imaging modalities
  • Pairs each with original materials - e.g. x-rays, echocardiograms, lab reports, charts – so that readers can work through their diagnosis using the same information as the physician who treated the patient originally

But the same tools have the power to enslave the physicians if they have poor clinical skills Dear editor: By Amazon Customer Here is another pearl by Franklin B. Saksena. His first monograph, Hemodynamics in Cardiology: Calculations and Interpretations (Praeger Scientific, New York 1983) is an epitome of his precision in thought and expression, and his genius for mathematical derivation. His second monograph, Color Atlas of Local and Systemic Signs of Cardiovascular Disease (Blackwell Publishing, 2008) is a record of his observations over more than 3 decades as an astute clinician and a gifted teacher of physical diagnosis. The current monograph, Patient Studies in Valvular, Congenital, and Rare Forms of Cardiovascular Disease: An Integrative Approach (Wiley Blackwell, 2015) is, in addition, an affirmation that new technologies introduced over the last fifty years can be powerful tools in the hands of skilled physicians. But the same tools have the power to enslave the physicians if they have poor clinical skills. Clinical skills risk gradual erosion if they are neglected during training, and may slowly become all but extinct as skilled teachers become a rare species. The author of this book is a sentinel and this book a beacon. The current book also betrays the mystery writer in the author who is a Sherlock Homes enthusiast. He ends the book with an interesting crossword puzzle. In the sequence of data presentation I would have preferred to see the history and physical before test results and images in most cases. Longitudinal findings and outcomes in patients are good for learning. The book is expensive but the quality of the paper and plates are good. Hold on to this one; the last time I checked, a used copy of his first book was on sale for $3,126.00 on Amazon. (Checked 04/23/16)-James Mathew, MD, FACC, FAHA

What I've Learned from You is the story of the lessons of life taught to a doctor by his patients. It takes us on a journey from an inner-city trauma center to the bedside of a dying cancer patient. It explores human relationships and gives an intimate view into the window of the human condition. On the road to becoming a physician, Dr. Kelly longed to find serenity in a world of conflicting ideas and aspirations. The demands of his medical training left little time for personal growth so he reached out to those around him. He took notes in a journal on the lessons of life he learned from his patients and their families. They opened their hearts and exposed their wounds. He paid attention and listened, and his patients became his teachers. Late one winter night in 2006, while leafing through old papers, he came across his journal. It inspired this book, which began as an effort to preserve the stories to share with his children. Maybe, he thought, they could learn from them too. To his surprise, as he wrote, the stories evolved and beautifully took on a life of their own. Now Dr. Kelly shares them with his readers, so we can all learn from the wisdom and experiences of these remarkable individuals. What I've Learned from You is the story of love and pain and healing and sickness and birth and dying and all of the beautiful things in between. It brings compassion and empathy back to the art of medicine.

What I've Learned from You: The Lessons of Life Taught to a Doctor by His Patients, by Scott Kelly

Review "A terrific book by a wonderful doctor!"           --Sanjay Gupta, MD, Emmy award winning chief medical correspondent, author of Cheating Death, Chasing Life, and Monday Mornings. "It is gratifying to see another doctor in the field exploring the treasures of the doctor-patient relationship.  There is no moment that more quickly sets aside our inhibitions and moves into the deeper aspects of human behaviors than these serious conversations with mortality.  Dr. Scott Kelly explores the silence between words as he applies a sensitive eye to the emotional and spiritual currents that run underneath the interaction in the broad theatre of sickness and healing.  A good read."             --David Watts, MD, award winning author of Bedside Manners and The Orange Wire Problem"Scott's book says it all...What I've Learned from You can teach us all to learn from one another."             --Bernie Siegle, MD, author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles and The Art of Healing."Scott's book is a treasure to the medical community and it should be required reading for every medical student."         --Douglas Lundy, MD, Co-President of Resurgens Orthopaedics, Board of Directors-American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

From the Back Cover "Kelly's memoir explores the idea that medicine not only mends the body, but can also heal the soul.  This charming, touching collection of stories about medical work from a seasoned physician gives insights into the doctor-patient relationship. Kelly was driven to become a doctor by the feeling of security he experienced when attending a medical office as a child. Here, he considers the many lessons learned from his patients. From the shock of encountering his first cadaver in medical school--the instructor reminded the class that the body must be treated like that of a loved one--to the ache of losing a patient, Kelly recounts intimate conversations and situations that mark him as an attentive, compassionate professional. He writes of medical school and his first medical residency and recounts the learning curves, trials, and errors that characterized those years ("Chris was the first person I'd watched die right in front of me....And I felt like a failure for not being able to save him"). Though concerned with the tribulations and idiosyncrasies of the medical occupation specifically, the memoir shows how any profession in which one encounters the misfortunes and tragedies of strangers can drive one to be more empathetic. The book, then, is just as much an exploration of the meaning of life and morality in the face of mortality--a fact we are made all the more conscious of by illness and injury--as it is an exploration of the emotional trajectory of one man's experience of becoming a doctor. Deeply humane and eminently readable, this book provides a model for mutual understanding between doctors and those they treat. More than this, though, it emphasizes the importance of listening: to the voices, as well as the bodies, of others. An intelligent, sensitive reflection on the practice of medicine."                                                                                                               Kirkus Book Review"We live in a world in which medical care seems more automated and less human. Doctors are busy, rushing, trying to care for all of their patients. Dr. Scott Kelly brings a refreshing perspective of medicine in which a doctor takes time to sit and talk with his patients, to really listen to what they have to say. Kelly brings us back to the original focus of medicine: the doctor and the patient together.Kelly begins keeping a journal during his third year of medical school. He learns much from his textbooks, but he learns the most from his patients. An attending physician tells his students, "Listen to your patients, young doctors, and they will tell you what is wrong with them."It may seem as if the patients in a waiting room are simply there for a physical examination, but they are waiting, nearly bursting, with a need to communicate what is inside them, not simply organs and tissues, but their passions, fears, and souls. One patient, Bernie, asks Dr. Kelly if he believes in the mind-body connection. This book is the realization of that connection. You cannot treat a patient's symptoms without treating the whole person."I realized I took away much more from the encounter than I had offered."When Dr. Kelly is a student, he sees a patient who had cut his leg badly, Walter, a former surgeon who retired due to Parkinson's disease. Walter asks Dr. Kelly to suture him without Kelly's attending physician. After getting permission, Dr. Kelly sutures the wound under Walter's direction. Dr. Kelly and his attending could simply treat Walter's wound, but instead they give him an opportunity to be a part of his healing, even to direct it. In this way, both Walter and his wound heal together. This book is filled with gems that will not only inspire a doctor in his or her own practice, but will inspire all of us to integrate these lessons into our own lives. For example, his patient, Sean, values being with his children more than his work. "The key is to leave the work at the office...Turn off the television. Put down the newspaper. Get down on the floor, to your children's level, and absorb yourself in their world...and be present--and not just in body. Give them your mind and your heart." Dr. Kelly says, "when I follow his advice, I am never disappointed."Star Rating - 5 out of 5                                                                                                      San Francisco Book Review"The doctor/patient relationship is one of the most intimate. Vulnerable, your health in their hands, you may feel powerless and subordinate. After years of schooling, residency, and intense training, doctors seem to know everything; many of them seem to think they do. Additionally, doctors are more overworked than ever and frequently the patient/doctor relationship fails. But this isn't always the case; every once in a while you meet a physician who takes the time to listen, who treats patients as individuals, personally. It is obvious that  Scott Kelly, M.D. is such a physician, sincere when he says he feels honored to serve his patients. Dr. Kelly has written a beautiful memoir marked by humility and wonder as he recalls patients who have had a lasting impact on his life. Far from the pompous, omniscient, and aloof clinician, Kelly is all too aware of his own failings as he struggles, through medical school, residency, stints in the ER, and the tightrope balance between work and family. Although warned to keep his interactions with patients "strictly professional" (i.e., detached), he allows himself to open up to some of them, to listen, and then to learn. This book is his journey through those lessons."And it remains true -- regardless of the latest technologies we actively seek as physicians to improve quality of life and relieve pain -- that the most important tools physicians will ever have are our ears."The writing in this book is sensitive, marked with grace and absolute respect for his patients. Each of the short chapters begins with a personal memory; then Dr. Kelly introduces us to one of his patients. Each taught him an important lesson, on themes as varied as marriage, friendship, faith, happiness, responsibility, perseverance, grief, joy, and love. The book follows Dr. Kelly's experiences mostly chronologically, so you get to experience the highs and lows of his training and residency, as he learns to keep people in the center of practicing medicine, and through his articulate character sketches, you feel that you know his patients too, or that you wish you could have. You meet Joy, whose deep faith steadied Dr. Kelly in the face of man's inhumanity. Harrison reaffirmed the necessity of having a strong sense of purpose, and living true to yourself. Emily's chronic, but privately-endured, pain reminded him to be gentle and compassionate-we don't know the burdens other quietly carry. There are many others, each story told with love and sympathy, neither moralistic or pedantic. These are lessons we all, in our human endeavor, need to learn, and learn again."Star Rating - 5 out of 5                                                                                           Manhattan Book Review

A Must Read and Must Give Little Gem By Kem Lee A must read and must give for anyone in medicine.....even though I adore this book and I am not in medicine! Dr. Kelly truly bridges the gap between patients and doctors with his personal recount of learning the lessons of life from his patients. Dr. Kelly reminds the reader that doctors are learning too and that importantly medicine is humanizing. I enjoyed his patient stories and references from the past in medical school and residency. He ties it all together with his family life today. I believe med schools need to provide this little gem to all students-an important reminder that patients are not numbers but people with valuable voices as well.

I loved the reality of the writing and the true sincere storyline. It was truly written by a doctor who listened and learned the truths from his patients. I would highly suggest this as a great summer read and a great gift to pass on some of our much needed life's lessons! I have already posted it on my companies preferred reading list! Enjoy....

The spells are great because most of the required items you already have By Nik I've read a lot of books on the tarot, but this one stands out because of it's exercises and straightforward card descriptions. For each major arcana, set of court cards, and suit, there are simple exercises and spells to help you get to know the cards and experience their energy. The spells are great because most of the required items you already have, and they aren't very time-consuming.The card descriptions in this book get right to the point, which is quite refreshing. Each card has key words, a short meaning, and sample interpretations that are easy to apply to everyday life.I would highly recommend this book for tarot beginners and more experienced readers looking to get to know the cards on a deeper level. (Oh, and did I mention it's pretty and full-color? It is.)

Pepper Ryan grew up the troublesome, spoiled child of a rock god. With her less-than-stellar parentage, and the bipolar disorder that has plagued her existence, to say this little firecracker is a handful would be the understatement of the century. Sammy Belle spent more than half his life saving Pepper. He’d been her strength, her sanity, and the protective brotherly figure she never wanted to have. They were never meant to be together. They gave in anyway. And just when Sammy thought he had everything he wanted, Pepper ran. Now twenty-three, Pepper returns to Sugartown, a failed tattoo artist with one too many screws loose who’s down on her luck, wielding an ice cream van as beaten up as her heart. Sugartown’s most coveted bachelor has always been content with the quiet life he leads until Pepper, the hellion from his past, returns to test his strength, his patience, and perhaps even his sanity. But two can play at that game, and Pepper is about to learn that Sam can give as good as he gets. Can this good country boy survive Pepper’s cruel city world, or will the whole thing be put down to a bout of temporary insanity? One thing is for certain: He’s crazy about her. She’s just crazy. Warning: Intended for an 18+ audience. Contains sexual content, oodles of profanity, a firefighter so hot you may need a very cold shower, and one pink-haired crazy Harajuku girl. May also contain traces of nuts. Some scenes within this book may be a trigger for certain readers.

By Kawehi's Book Blog (Pepper)"I can’t promise I’m not going to make you crazy."--"Then we’ll be crazy together."(Sammy)Normally, I have to take a breather to gather up my thoughts and write up a review for a book, and Now Leaving Sugartown was no different. Only, it was.Author Carmen Jenner, definitely ups the “crazy” to her patented Sugartown series and makes you wonder what she's going to come up with next! I mean, if you thought Holly was a hell raising firecracker, then just wait till you meet Pepper! *I laughed so hard at that scene with Pepper, Sammy, and that ice cream truck! Haha*'''''''Now many years post Greetings From Sugartown..Sammy Belle “Sam” and Pepper Ryan, are all grown up, and have always shared a special bond that many would look upon as brother/sister but it’s not. It’s MUCH MORE than that.As many of you Sugartownies remember, Sammy is the little brother of Ana (“Ana Banana”) and Pepper is the daughter of Holly and ex-flame, rocker Cooper.Growing up together, they’ve always been each other’s rock and constant shelter from the rain. But as feelings and new awareness’ began to grow, and the two feel their relationship developing into something more-- so do prejudices, insecurities, and tensions. Now, fast forward five years later…And with her aspiring tattoo career flushed down the drain and her love life in tatters, Pepper returns to Sugartown, to plan out her next move and to face the boy who’s heart she shattered after one fateful encounter. Will a second chance at love, be the charm? What will happen when time runs short, and what she thought she could protect and shield Sammy from, turns to be ultimately her worst enemy?"Quit f*#king running, Pepper…that’s all you need to do—just quit running."-"No, we’re not. I ran five years ago because I knew I couldn’t be what you needed. I wanted you to be happy, and I knew I couldn’t give you that. Not in the long run. "Can Sugartown's most notorious bachelor convince the one that got away to stay and take a chance on him?... On each other?"I want you, Pepper. I’ve never wanted anyone else."..."Together we were motherf*#king fireworks."Can he [Sammy] prove to Pepper that he can be the pillar of salvation, security, and the hope she needs to carry her on through the darkness and save her from her own horrid destruction? And Pepper. Will Pepper be able to erase scars of the past, while salvaging and fighting for a future with Sammy? Will she be able to muster up the courage and admit that she needs help and find redemption in herself? Are these two polar opposites truly meant for one other? Or will history repeat itself and lead to utter heartbreak and devastation?"Pepper, if it’s one thing life with you has taught me, is that it’s always messy.""If you leave me, I’m coming with you. You can run as far and as fast as you want, but I’ll be right behind you. I’ll be right there."Or are some things far beyond you to fix?"I hated that I wasn’t enough to save her from herself. That I couldn’t be the one to fix her. But I hate the thought of losing her more."'''''''#Get ready to be on the edge of your own sanity ladies and gents! The “Sugar babies” are sure about to rock and detonate your kindles!!P.S:- Who's that beautiful girl model on the book cover?! She's sooo gorgeous!

I’ve been reading it from the very beginning and knowing there won’t be any more books makes me incredibly sad. Carmen really delivered with this final book and it is probably my favorite of the series and I didn’t think anything would surpass Holly and Jackson for me.What I loved most about this book is how it blended fun and feels together perfectly. The book is so much fun and Pepper and Sammy together are a riot. But the book still maintained a serious tone and had a deep storyline. I just loved that balance and I thought Carmen handled it really well. At times it read like a lighthearted fun read, but then at other times my heart was breaking and being ripped from my chest.Pepper broke my heart. This girl has not had an easy life and she is constantly battling her demons. I wish she could see just how awesome she truly is. But Pepper is a great girl and is a riot. She is unpredictable and fun and I loved her way with words.Sammy has grown up to be such a wonderful man and I fell in love with him. He is such a great guy and he clearly loves Pepper with everything he has. It was so tough watching him try to keep himself from falling for Pepper once again and keep himself from getting hurt.As usual, Carmen delivers the sexy times. Pepper and Sammy’s chemistry was off the charts and they were so great together. They were so sweet together but also downright sexy. It was a fantastic mix.I also loved catching up with some of my favorite characters again. Elijah and Jackson had me cracking up with their overprotective ways and Holly is still freakin awesome. I’m going to miss these characters so damn much. All in all, Now Leaving Sugartown was the perfect way to wrap up this series. Carmen’s writing continues to get better and better and I can’t wait to see what other books she has in store.

By Brie, Cheeky Chicks Blogger They say all good things must come to an end, well eventually and even though I knew this was the last hurrah in Sugartown, nothing could prepare me for the impending journey that Carmen Jenner took me on.Little Sammie Belle, is definitely not little anymore... anywhere *blushes* I thought I loved Elijah, I thought I was infatuated with Jackson, but let me tell you Fireman Sam has seduced my heart. Our little Sugartown cutie with the potty mouth is 100% ALL MALE, a Viking to be exact and has definitely grown up into a fine specimen. But what really makes his character, is that he feels. He is a man that cares no matter the circumstances. A man who loves relentlessly.Unyielding.Unwavering.His love for Pepper Ryan- Harris- Rowe is undeniable and anchored in the depths of his soul. She is love in his eyes and he is her very reason to breath.Pepper. Little...Let me just say I am in love, utterly consumed, completely captivated by and with this character. Her journey is just as beautiful as it is breathtaking. Just as powerful as it is meaningful. Her personality, no matter how crazy and wild it is; is simply intoxicating. She is so much of her mom with her lewd comments, but worse in a way. Imagine Holly times ten and we get Pepper. From her pink hair, inked body to the brokenness that clouds her soul; I am enamored. At her weakest she is strong; at every breaking point, she is an unmovable mountain.Together, their chemistry is fiery as they embark on this emotional roller coaster of a relationship. Did I laugh? Um, yes until my cheeks hurt. Did I lay down in my bed and cry into my pillow for the pain that these two characters experienced? I did, and as I write this review now tears are staining my cheeks. To say I cried would be an understatement. I wept. My heart shattered as my soul dissolved into a million tiny tears. Now Leaving Sugartown broke me in every way possible. I don't think I have ever been so crushed in my life. This book holds a message, one that will touch every part of you. It's about survival. It's an internal war− battling mental illnesses, fighting your personal perception, going up against yourself. Carmen Jenner not only educates us, but she gives us a deeper understanding. Her writing is effortlessly flawless and her words touched me in a way that I felt them every where. In me. On me. Flowing through me as she healed me of my own insecurities. This story has become a part of me. I recommend this book, a million times over. It will force you to really see yourself, the person hiding within.Final Thoughts: I color.

From the Introduction: Many Christians consider the Bible to be “the word of God” and to tell the story of Jesus; however, in this book, we will take a closer look at the “story” contained in the gospels. There have been many productions telling the “story” of Jesus’ life, which makes it seem like there is a coherent story of Jesus’ life in the Bible. Such things as the three wise men, the birth in the manger, turning water into wine all seem to be integral aspects in the “story” of Jesus’ life, but we will see that these are each only included in one gospel. We will see throughout this book that there is no single narrative in the Gospels and that the four gospels tell different stories with inconsistencies that are irreconcilable. In fact each gospel writer had their own message that they wanted to convey to readers, which could be the cause of some inconsistencies. Mark is the oldest of the four gospels and most scholars agree that Matthew and Luke both used Mark as a major source, which is why many of the stories between the three show verbatim agreement. But Matthew and Luke also had their own agendas, so they changed passages from Mark’s gospel or added passages to it in order to convey a different message and set of beliefs, which we will see throughout this book. And we will also examine whether the cruel and spiteful God of the Old Testament has been replaced by a God of love or if this is just what Christians wish happened in their Bible.

It is interesting that he points out that even though Matthew and Luke used Mark as a source, their books differ from Mark’s in many respects. It is also interesting to note that the “Christmas story” that many churches perform contains elements that are contradict in one or more of the gospels. Like the manger scene. That’s only in one gospel and another gospel says Jesus was born in his parents’ house. And the gospels can’t even agree on the time of death. It is quite amazing how much pastors hide the truth.

Drake dissects them and shows exactly how they contradict each other and tell completely different stories at times. These are not interpretations, but exactly what the bible says. It’s kind of amazing how different the Gospels actually are and Drake does a good job comparing and contrasting them. The book is very concise and to the point and even humorous at times. Definitely a must read for anyone who has wondered about the historicity of Jesus.

Well done By Kindle Customer I was quite impressed with the work that went into putting all this material together, I also enjoyed the author's sense of humor. I have always had my doubts about much of the material in the Bible, and after reading this book, now I am convinced that a lot of what it contains is not historical but fictional.
