Health and sustainability have become ubiquitous topics in all realms of popular discourse. What these discussions often overlook is the fact that the two concepts are interrelated, and that their surrounding policies and practices can often inform and reinforce each other. As sustainability measures are already in place across many levels of government, there is now an opportunity to extend these principles to improve health care and health care policy. Health and Sustainability: An Introduction details how the values of sustainability can be applied to the design of health systems and the delivery of primary care. By providing a practical framework for understanding complicated sustainability problems related to health, the book offers an authoritative resource for understanding: - health and environmental rights- parallels between human toxicology and ecotoxicology- how health promotion strategy can be a template for sustainability- health science and how it can be used to support decisions in health and sustainability- how scientific knowledge is achieved, understood, accepted, and used in health and environmental advocacy, and how this relates to sustainabilityStudents and practitioners in health will benefit from this introduction to sustainability, and those in sustainability and environmental studies will benefit from this application to human health. Health and Sustainability offers a roadmap for successfully integrating these approaches for healthier people and environment.

Health and Sustainability: An Introduction, by Tee L. Guidotti

Review "Most of today's references to 'sustainable practices' underrepresent the true depth of the global problems we face. Tee Guidotti's new book gets serious about sustainability, defining it as simply 'balancing what is taken and what is given.' What comes into focus is how sustainability and health are forever linked, and that substantive change is needed before global health is irrevocably affected." -- William Leiss, PhD, McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment, University of Ottawa

"A timely book. The task of recharting a course to a sustainable future is great, urgent, and formidable. A clear understanding of the 'health and sustainability' relationship - and in particular that attaining environmental and social sustainability has enormous consequences for human wellbeing, happiness, health and survival - is essential." -- Anthony J. McMichael, from the foreword

"This book may be Professor's Guidotti's opus given that it sums up and extends his eclectic and significant contributions over many years. This is a very useful reference." --DOODY'S

Book Review for Health and Sustainabilty : An Introduction By Brett Dr. Tee Guidotti’s book is a thought provoking and timely book for anyone with concerns about the sustainability of human society and the general overall health of our planet. “Health and Sustainability: An Introduction” avoids editorialization and politicization of the issues surrounding environmental sustainability. Instead, the book utilizes a rich and nuanced historical perspective of the origins of both environmental sustainability and public health to give the reader a better understanding of how these two fields relate to each other today and cannot be considered as separate from each other. In order to accomplish this, the book first discusses the history of the concept of the sustainability. This helps to provide a frame of reference of what sustainability means and how the quality of our own developed human civilization fits into the equation. Health is similarly examined in terms of its evolution from the individual provision of medical treatment of disease only, into the development of public health measures to prevent disease in populations. Furthermore, as our understanding of ecological systems matures the book illustrates how the maintenance of natural ecosystems is a key part of developing sustainable public health programs. From this foundation, Dr. Guidotti provides a perspective for being able to move forward in the public discussion towards building a more sustainable natural environment while simultaneously continuing to make inroads on improving public health. What constitutes scientific fact for the different involved parties that make up this discussion is examined, including the general public, environmental activists, the business community, the scientific community, and legislators. An examination of what constitutes “junk science” and examples of pitfalls that occur when facts are misrepresented is reviewed. The importance of messaging issues is also discussed in terms of the financial, social, and environmental impact moving towards a sustainable society. Specific subjects are also addressed on where environmental sustainability and public health are particularly intertwined including : climate change, our evolving concepts of what constitutes pollution and contamination, human population growth, the economics of energy policy, and the harvesting of natural products in the environment for human consumption. The concept of sustainable artificial ecosystems is also discussed including the sustainability and health of the home and work environment, agricultural land use, and urban ecosystems. Lastly the book provides a thoughtful reflection of the role that spirituality has come into play on environmental sustainability and how it is currently shaping our thoughts on the matter. Careers in environmental sustainability and health are also reviewed which should be of interest for readers at any stage in their careers.“Health and Sustainability: An Introduction” is a rewarding, thought provoking book for anyone regardless of their own personal beliefs on the role that environmental sustainability should play in our society. The captivating historical examples used throughout the book make it easy to read and very aptly illustrate complex ideas. It is well organized and specific subjects are easily referenced. Health providers, public health professionals, and policy makers will also find this an invaluable reference source.Brett Perkison MD, MPH, FACOEM

Boling The Bible is a collection of individual books that collectively relay a singular message, namely that of redemption and restoration through the Messiah. Each individual book shares this message, some more overt than others, through the genre and the literary patterns subsumed within that style of writing. Thus, understanding matters of a literary nature are vital to grasping the manner by which each book of the Bible declares the aforementioned underlying message. In his latest book aptly titled Literary Introductions to the Books of the Bible, Leland Ryken explores the important issue of literary style, walking the reader through the various themes, patterns, and mannerisms or techniques by which the biblical authors, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, declare God’s message of salvation to the world. For starters, this is a very helpful book. Ryken, by virtue of his academic credentials, if quite adept at exploring such a topic. He saliently addresses the issues of each biblical book in a manner that will be of great service to scholar and laymen alike. If you are wholly unfamiliar with for example the apocalyptic genre, after reading this book, you will better understand why Revelation is written in the manner we find it in Scripture. If you have studied such things for years, I am quite confident you will discover some additional nugget of truth and insight after reading Ryken’s contribution to this subject area.Ryken engages each book of Scripture in a consistent manner which helps the reader know what to expect in each chapter. He begins with a bit of orientation to the book. This is indeed helpful as there are arguably many books in the Bible that are lesser known than others. For instance, I would venture to say that we spend a great deal more time reading the Psalms than we do reading Habakkuk. Ryken then provides some general concepts about the book that constitute a broad based overview of the message the author of that book is trying to get across. If applicable, unique topics associated with each book are then addressed along with a helpful chart that outlines the major themes. As he works through each book, separate discussions over important genres, forms, and techniques are explored. Each chapter concludes with a summary section titled “Literary Form and Religious Vision” that engages the books literary intentions, a summary of what the literary form contained in the book means for our lives, and some helpful literary tips for reading and studying the book given the increased knowledge one will know have on the topic of literary genre. There was much to find interesting in this book. A prime example is in Ryken’s discussion of the historical books such as 1 Kings. We typically view such books as nothing more than a history book basing our approach on how we typically interact with history books – a collection of facts about events and the people involved and not much more. Ryken shares with the reader the genres of court history, hero stories, and dedicatory prayers that comprise 1 Kings. Each of these individual genre that fall under the overarching umbrella of historical narrative, help us further understand the specific event taking place and how they relate to the history of Israel and more importantly, what God is doing in history to bring about His divine plan of redemption and restoration.I highly recommend this book for all believers. As a homeschooling parent, I will be using this book as a tool for Bible class. It is written from the mind of a scholar who is adept at relaying scholarly information in a manner than can be understood and appreciated by all. If you desire to know more about the literary genre of Scripture and why it is important, give this book a read and keep it close by as you journey through God’s Word.I received this book for free from Crossway Books and the opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Hurst There is nothing like being able to read a literary work in its original language, as it adds such color and dimension to the work being read. The text goes from being viewed in black and white to being seen in full color.Understanding the literary features of a text has a similar effect. The beauty and artistry of poetry can be appreciated by just reading it but when you understand the various literary forms being used by the author it comes alive and the meaning becomes clearer. The same goes when reading the Bible. While the Bible is more than just another book in terms of its content and divine authorship, it is just like any other in terms of its literary content. It contains a vast array of literary genres and forms just like those found in any other piece of literature. When we avail ourselves to learning and understanding these genres and forms we have allowed ourselves to get closer to the mind and intent of the writer.Having already written Ryken’s Bible Handbook and The Literary Study Bible, Leland Ryken, former professor of English at Wheaton College, has written a new book, Literary Introductions to the Books of the Bible, as a companion and sequel to his popular A Complete Handbook of Literary Forms of the Bible. This new book draws from, utilizes, and expands upon the work he has already done in past books to help Christians better understand the meaning and message of the Bible. The purpose of this book is very simple – to introduce the reader to and explain the various literary genres and forms contained in all 66 books of the Bible. Many books on the Bible and its literary characteristics organize the books or certain passages around the various literary forms thus giving you a catalog of forms with examples of each. Ryken’s book takes the reader through every book of the Bible separately and gives an overview of the literary features contained in each but without example passages. There are six aspects of the books of the Bible discussed in each chapter:Orientation – The beginning of each chapter orients you to the book itself and gives basic info such as the meaning of the books name (Genesis means “beginning”).Generalizations – This gives a brief description of the content of the book like how Deuteronomy contains a number of orations/sermons to Israel about obedience to the Law and entering the Promised Land.Uniqueness – Where necessary, whenever a book contains unique topics or interpretive issues they are discussed such as the time aspect in the prophets and more specifically in the book of Isaiah.Charts – Each chapter has “Book at a Glance” chart which is a basic content outline divided by chapters. For instance, Habakkuk is divided into three sections: (1) 1:1-11 is Habakkuk’s first question and God’s reply, (2) 1:12-2:20 is Habakkuk’s second question and God’s reply, and (3) 3 is Habakkuk’s exalted vision of God.Literary Features – This contains separate unite on the major literary forms in each book of the Bible. For instance, the Gospel of John contains gospel, narrative, various categories of story (hero, miracle, testimony, etc.), proverb, and prayer.Summarization or Literary Form and Religious Vision – This concluding section summarizes the intention of the books religious message as expressed through the literary forms as well as literary tips for reading each book and quotes from literary commentators specific to each book. For example, 1 John has a series of tests for how to tell if someone is a Christian and they are not given in a single running list or argument. Therefore, you would not extract John’s argument the same way you would Paul’s.Literary Introductions is a must have book for any Christian who wants to read and understand the Bible better. For Christians who are new to the Bible there is a lot that will help get you more oriented to the message of each book and help make more difficult sections easier to understand. For those like me who have been reading the Bible for years there is still a lot that can be gained from this book. As you read through different chapters and learn new things about how different books work, lights will begin to go on as you put pieces together.I received this book for free from Crossway for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

What is common sense? It is basically what most of us already have but do not access and many times we are ignorant towards our abilities to see common sense due to a blockage caused by emotions. This book aims to show the path to common sense in order to understand it, and as mentioned in my previous book ‘introduction to logical life’, everything you learn must be expanded upon through your own thoughts, logic and opinions in order to have your own unique understanding of life as each one of us are individually unique with different abilities. This book states nothing but facts. Each page is packed with quality content which gets straight to the point. Made as entertaining as possible for readers.

Enrich your mind with Logical Life By C-Five After having a disagreement with a friend about something I thought at best was trivial, I was sent me a request to read Logical Life Understanding Common Sense by Tahmid Hussain. At first I was a little thrown by the title, wondering if she was saying in a subtle way I did not have much common sense. However after Purchasing the book and delved deeper, I started to fully grasp the meaning of the request; that even though we may be friends we may see things different depending on how we process information based on our perspective. As individuals, we have the ability to learn and absorb, however without allowing ourselves to understand the feelings and viewpoints of others we block our mind and leave it in a stagnant state. Logical Life Understanding common sense' by Tahmid Hussain teaches us the many ways to expand our minds and learn from others while paving the way for our future generation.

Everyone has it, but not everyone knows what to do with it By horrorgirldonna This book explains common sense—something that most people have, but do not understand how to access. This book opens the avenue to the understanding of common sense and how it is blocked by emotions. Author Tahmid Hussain also explains the art of prevention—something we all know, but again cannot understand when or how to use. There is also a section that discusses arguing — primarily wasting one’s time with those who love to argue and prove their point, even when they do not even have a valid point. These are people to avoid and more important, these are the kind of people you do not want to become. Arguing an invalid point does nothing but hurt yourself. This is a quick, but highly recommended read for anyone who is looking to expand their thinking.

Getting a life isn't always easy. And hanging on to it is even harder....

Jodi Taylor brings all her comic writing skills to this heartwarming tale of self-discovery.

Known as The Nothing Girl because of her severe stutter and chronically low self-confidence, Jenny Dove is only just prevented from ending it all by the sudden appearance of Thomas, a mystical golden horse only she can see. Under his guidance Jenny unexpectedly acquires a husband - the charming and chaotic Russell Checkland - and for her nothing will ever be the same again. With overprotective relatives on one hand and the world's most erratic spouse on the other, Jenny needs to become someone. And fast!

Fans of Jodi Taylor's best-selling Chronicles of St. Mary's series will adore the quirky humour in this new, contemporary novel. Jodi Taylor, International Woman of Mystery, spent some time working undercover for North Yorkshire County Library Service. Heavily disguised as the world's most incompetent facilities manager, she shifted dead dogs, fell out of mobile libraries, and spent far too much time in the gents' toilets. The idea to rewrite history first came to her while studying history A level at an evening class.

Just One Damned Thing After Another is her first novel and was originally self-published as an ebook; it was downloaded by more than 60,000 readers on Amazon.

However, this book blew me away. Is it high brow literature? No. Is it YA? No. It was simply a good book that I couldn't put down. It was well written and after reading this book (in addition to the whole St Mary's series) I will buy anything and everything Jodi Taylor writes in the future. I don't actually say that about many authors. But I am adding Taylor to my list right now.

18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Pleasant wish fulfillment read By Glinda Good I'm going to discuss specifics about this story, so if you get your knickers in a twist over spoilers, look away.I read and very much enjoyed Taylor's Just One Damned Thing After Another, so when I saw Nothing Girl, I thought I'd give it a read, even though the mystical golden horse description would normally have sent me on my way. (Hard boiled cynic, here.) I almost gave up on the story after the first few pages, being so over any form of young adult stories that wallow in self-harm and self-pity.Yes, there's a need for exploration of those topics. Yes, your mileage may vary. But if I'm investing the time and immersion in an author's story, actions of the characters must be understandable and coherent for me to continue reading. Nothing Girl opens with a planned suicide, which results in the appearance of a magical invisible sidekick and counselor. At no time did I feel any depth of despair and emotion from the author's reveal of the main character. This made the initial set-up unconvincing even before the magic horse showed up.Moving into the greater story of a young woman finding her own strengths and desires and finding romance, things moved along better for me. When I finished the Nothing Girl I made a big face at the pre-teen fantasy ending, but hey! that probably works for less jaded, evil readers.Overall I did enjoy the story for what it was. Taylor's characters in the Chronicles of St. Mary's stories suffer from some of the same flaws that Nothing Girl does -- they make clearly stupid decisions at the author's direction to obviously move the story in a certain direction. I guess when you find yourself shouting "YOU MORON" at a character, the author has succeeded in some fashion.I will watch for, and read more of Ms. Taylor's fiction.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable...and then... By IncognitoReading This author has the gift and the craft for creating enjoyable, quirky characters that are wonderfully capable of carrying an absorbing, character-driven storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the first three-quarters of the book, and I looked forward to seeing how the issues the heroine faced with her family and her marriage would be worked out (and how she would grow in the process). And then...***SPOILER ALERT**** ****SPOILER ALERT*** ***SPOILER ALERT****In the last quarter of the book, I was completely thrown off the tracks by contrived plot machinations that tumbled the story into a sudden, vicious, Agatha Christie-knockoff climax and villainously motivated conflagration. (I am not a mystery/suspense afficionado--where did I miss that in the book description?) The epilogue that followed resembled something from My Little Ponies. (What happened to you, Thomas???) I am giving what I genuinely (!) enjoyed in the book three stars, but I was disappointed at the end. :(

Betty attempts what every woman has at one point fantasized about: waking up one morning and throwing everything else aside in order to focus on nothing other than her dream. Betty discards her practical nature, takes risks, rides the wind and embraces the adventure without guilt or concern for tomorrow.Betty is my hero because she was not just propelled into this adventure, she chose it, saw it through and damn the consequences. Betty was spontaneous and that is a quality that has become rare in this complicated world we all navigate. Moreover, she believed. This is a fun ride that will capture your imagination and perhaps inspire you to pursue your own dream, whatever that may be.At the very least it will make you smile.

She awakens on the morning of her 40th birthday in the grips of a hangover to find a hulk of guy in her kitchen, a guy who came to fix the plumbing at her mother's request as it turns out. Something about the "intruder" in her kitchen leads Betty to decide that she is going to find a husband before the day is over. Thus begins a zany saga as she runs through, and from, a string of men in a driven search to find her soul mate.Betty's forays into the avenues and alleys of Manhattan are anything but organized. She starts her quest with the purchase of a $7,000 wedding dress and wears it through the day and into the night to broadcast her intentions. The gown attracts attention, becomes a conversation starter, and encumbers her flight when running away seems the only sensible thing to do. Very little that Betty does, in fact, is sensible. But she is funny, very funny. Lucille Ball somehow comes to mind. Or Sandra Bullock--perfect. Betty's antics teeter on the brink of the absurd, but her wit and uncomplicated charm keep viewers steadfastly on her side through thick and thin.If the story line charges headlong into unabashed silliness, author San Alini's crackling dialogue keeps the reader engaged. A precise measure of detail in the descriptions pegs Betty's Manhattan locations from proposal to proposal and phone call to phone call as she plunges ahead driven by the conviction that everything happens for a reason.Alini's lean writing style engenders sympathy for her character even in the most incredulous circumstances. Besides, Alini is attentive to Betty's feelings and thoughts. "Men smell it on you when you are over 40," Betty whines about turning 40. And then clarifies, as she's discovered a rare perfumed scent, "It's desperation with a hint of sad."Betty has had men in her life, but her career was her overriding priority. "None of them ever got to me, got to who I truly am," she explains at one point. In the middle of another episode, she realizes on behalf of all of her gender that "We're programmed to like their disgustedness," "their" meaning men, of course. The men, Betty's would-be soul mates, do not put up much of a defense for their side of the locker room. "I'm not a dangerous person. Really. . . I work in the arts," a bank robber explains from behind his Stan Laurel mask. Turns out he is an English major. Moments later he drops his mask to reveal "... a rough sweaty face with beady eyes and sunken cheeks and a tattoo of Mao Zedong on the right cheek."I am probably not the best choice to write a review of this book. I don't read books like "A Husband by Midnight." I read history, you know, serious stuff (I am an English major also). "It's a beach read," a woman friend shouted over the din in the cafeteria where we were having breakfast. Her declaration was in response to my complaints about being utterly unacquainted with the genre. "Women read them," she said looking up to see the blank expression my face.I can claim two credentials, however. I know New York because for years I spent weeks at a time in the city in my work and got a feel for the place. I am also a writer--not widely recognized but one nevertheless who is committed to the craft."A Husband by Midnight" is a New Yorker's tale. At one point Betty asks, "Does anybody in New York eat normal foods any more?" Later she observes, "You can't put a tattoo on your face and not be judged." The allusions to ethnicity also smack of the Big Apple.San Alini's genius is in her brevity. Short chapters. Short sentences. Quips. Everything in a novel contributes to the storyline. Nothing detracts. The book may go a guy too far with all of Betty's encounters, as Doogal, poor creature, is acceptably sane and romantic on the streets only to turn into a maniac indoors. But then what's the point in raising questions of credibility when the plot dodges the ridiculous by less than half a block at every turn.I hate assigning stars as a way of registering a degree of approval. For sheer audacity, hilarity, imagination, drama and crisp writing style, I would award "A Husband by Midnight" five stars--a best of genre if you will. It won't go down as a momentous contribution to the literary traditions of the western hemisphere, but it could make a summer memorable in moments that might otherwise be soon forgotten from reading, you know, serious stuff.John J. She buys herself a wedding dress and goes looking for a husband. She runs into an interesting cast of characters and it's all fun and games until it becomes dangerous. Through it all the character, named Betty, keeps us laughing about our obsession with youth and with marriage.

As a boy, he watched his grandmother die painfully from breast cancer, which would eventually play a role in his pursuit of a career in medical research and pioneering this amazing field.

Although in 1971 his concept of detecting tumors through MRIs was widely met with mocking skepticism, within six years he became the first researcher to do a scan of a human, creating technology to reveal cancer within the human body. His life has been an incredible journey of discovery that will help you learn:

  • How his concept for cancer detection was inspired and developed
  • Why faith remains an integral part of his work
  • Why he is a strong supporter of the creativity and freedom found in patents.

An Amazing Story of One Man With Uncompromising and Unwavering Faith in God and What He Was Able to Do - Inventing the MRI By Harold Cameron What a book of testimony about our Great and awesome God and one Christian man with a vision and a dream with an unshakable faith in God. Dr. Damadian is indeed a Christian man who believes in the God of the Bible and has been used mightily of God to forever change our world through his invention of the MRI. The book is his amazing story of how he came up with the idea to build such a machine as the MRI and what he suffered and endured to bring his God shaped vision to pass and into reality.Dr. Damadian, though a brilliant man, is also a very God-fearing, uncompromising and humble man. In the book, Gifted Mind, it is revealed how he developed the MRI on a shoestring budget, being scoffed at by people all around him – stating that such a machine could never be built to do what he stated the MRI could do. But he went ahead in his faith and hope in God and built the first MRI and patented it so the machine could be used to detect cancer and other abnormalities in the body leading to the saving of many lives. And today the MRI is a marvelous medical tool being used every day all over the world to detect such things as tumors and other health abnormalities in the body. I know because I live with 2 brain tumors and have MRI’s done on a periodic basis (with and without contrast) so I for one am very grateful to God and to Dr. Damadian for inventing the MRI.In the book it is revealed how after he invented the MRI that actually worked (appropriately named Indomitable), companies such as GE and others tried to steal his invention from him. It is shared in the book that at one point he even stood up to one of the most powerful men in the business world in that time, Jack Welch, the CEO of General Electric. GE wanted to steal his invention and reap the rewards of Dr. Damadian’s work without crediting him or compensating him for it. And Dr. Damadian, (just as David took on Goliath and won), stood face to face with Jack Welch taking him on, who offered him 80 million dollars to settle the lawsuit…but Dr. Damadian said NO! And anyone who knows anything about business and Jack Welch, knows that no one told Jack Welch NO. But Doctor Damadian did and he won! God vindicated him in regards to the matter. Also, a heartbreaking thing happened in that Dr. Damadian was rejected for receiving the Nobel Prize for his invention – which he should have received. Rather others were awarded the Nobel Prize instead of him.Dr. Damadian is a Godly and Biblical man. He is a scientist. He is also a Biblical creationist and states so in his book without any reservations whatsoever. Although I do not comprehend all the technical writing in the book I do get and comprehend the story of Dr. Damadian and how one man with a vision and faith in our extraordinary God can and does do great and amazing things that leads to incredible change in our world. In this case, it was the invention of the MRI. His story greatly encouraged my heart that it is true, that indeed, nothing is impossible with God. To quote Dr. Damadian, “To me, the highest purpose a man can find for life is to serve the will of God. That is what motivates my work as a scientist: exploring and applying the laws of nature and of nature’s God for the benefit of mankind.” And to you Dr. Damadian I humbly say thank you for being willing to do the will of God in your life, for though it cost you much, the world today is all the better for the glory of God and the good of mankind worldwide because of your faith in God and obedience to Him and His will.If you are discouraged or doubting that God can or will use you as a Christian in this day and world we live in I strongly urge you to read Gifted Mind and be encouraged that God has, can, and will always use people who fear Him and His Word and purpose to do His will, in their hearts no matter the cost or outcome. To God be the Glory!I received the book for review purposes from Cross Focused Reviews and Master Books. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Fascinating Book By DM I greatly anticipated the release of "Gifted Mind: The Dr. Raymond Damadian Story", and I was not disappointed. The book begins with a depiction of Dr. Damadian's very interesting background and childhood. That itself was fascinating, including his conversion story. The book then delves into the Dr. Damadian's path to discovering the MRI. This portion is written very scientifically but not so much that it's impossible for the layman to understand. It was so interesting to learn just how he came up with such an invention, and I spent a great deal of time reading over this portion and looking at the various pictures and diagrams. I'll remember this every time I or a loved one have an MRI.My brother was saved by early discovery of a brain tumor, thanks to Dr. Damadian's invention. I remember the great excitement when we finally got one in our town - just one, mind you - and the long waiting list for an appointment. I'm thankful for this invention and, Dr. Damadian, if you're reading this review, THANK YOU and God bless you for making a difference in my brother's life, and in so many lives. Recommended.

Perkins "Gifted Mind” provides the reader with a fascinating story of the invention and development of the MRI for non-invasive and early detection of cancer. It also serves as an autobiography of Dr. Raymond Damadian and a discussion of the relationship between Christian faith and science. In particular, there is a discussion of the increasing realization of competent scientists that evolution has little scientific support.I enjoyed reading the book. I have both a science background and theology background and could appreciate much of what Dr. Damadian has to say. I could identify with him when he discovers a ‘truth’ of God’s created order and the resultant praise to God for allowing him to see it and to pass it on for the benefit of mankind. I very much appreciated the time he took to explain how difficult it is to overcome the skepticism of critics over new ideas and the tenacity it takes to continue to pursue to completion an idea when there are so many obstacles.A major part of the book discusses how God’s truth is made known through faith. Much of what he says is true, but he is more of a scientist than a theologian. Some of his discussion of scripture lacks theological precision. One example is his explanation (p.220) of John 8:32 “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” After explaining that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, he says that the incarnation of Jesus “opened the previously inaccessible doorway to His truth and to its incomparable power – the power made available only by Him.” And yet many non-believers also have great minds and discover truths about how the created universe works. This is what theologians call common grace. Romans 1 and Psalm 19:1 are two passages that make it clear all creation reflects God’s glory and is known by everyone. The context for the truth referred to in John 8:32 are Pharisees who refuse to believe Jesus as the son of God. The truth is our bondage to sin, and only in Christ can we be set free from it.There is much documentation in the book that serves to make the point that Dr. Damadian was the originator of the idea to use NMR to do a full body scan and of the method of detecting cancer using the two time relaxation parameters, but there was much repetition in this and I think less documentation might have been less self-serving. At times the book felt more like reading a personal journal of someone struggling with the world’s lack of recognition for his ideas and appreciation for the struggles he went through to make them reality.Notwithstanding these weaknesses, the book is a worthwhile read for those interested in reconciling faith and science, which are often pitted against one another. My hat is off to you Dr. Damadian!I received this book for free from Master Books in exchange for an honest review.
