Excellent, powerful and heartbreaking -- a must read By Len Diane Zaia's detailed recollection of years of mistreatment by the medical community, as her family tried to find the cause of her daughter Stephanie's symptoms, should be read by anyone who has trouble getting a proper diagnosis. Zaia describes, in specific detail, the years of doctors and psychiatrists who decided that Stephanie's symptoms were psychological because they weren't able to find the true cause and were too proud to refer Stephanie to a more qualified specialist. My daughter, Joanna, has Dystonia and she was misdiagnosed by many "experts."I've been a Dystonia support group leader for fifteen years. The complaint that I've heard most often has been about doctors who don't listen to their patients and who misdiagnose. My wife and I started the support group after our regional newspaper published its first article about Dystonia. We received many phone calls and they all had three things in common:1. The callers had never spoken to anyone who knew about Dystonia.2. It took over ten years for each caller to be properly diagnosed.3. The callers didn't want to end the phone calls because they finally found someone who understood what they had gone through.I relived my family"s experiences as I read Zaia's book. It"s an eye opening education for anyone searching for a correct diagnosis. I highly recommend it.

A very fast and inspiring read By Candice Diane Zaia has eloquently shared the frustrating and heartbreaking journey of trying to find the correct medical diagnosis for her daughter's dystonia. Her honesty and vulnerability will certainly empower other patient's and their families to keep up the good fight when the medical profession dismisses their concerns and does not keep their oath to "first do no harm". The video links of Diane's beautiful daughter are very powerful

About the Author Bernard E. Bulwer, MD., MSc, FASE Founder and Project Director, Echo Stethoscope Academy Project Longwood Medical and Academic Area, Boston, MA, USA Contact: info@EchoScope.org; Considered the "Leonardo da Vinci and the Frank Netter of echocardiography" for his illustrative prowess, as well as "a visionary and strategic thinker ahead of his time" by leading experts at Harvard, Colombia, and the Cleveland Clinic—Dr. Bulwer brings his skills to fill a great need in modern medical education. It is the exciting juncture where the 200-year old traditional “audio” stethoscope is being replaced by the new ultrasound “echo” stethoscope. Their use will enable doctors and health care professionals to now “see and not just hear.” To responsibly fulfil the promise of these instruments, it is imperative that users learn dynamic cardiac structure and function using a sonographic ultrasound “scalpel” in the living, and not just on a cadaver in the anatomy lab. “Transthoracic Echocardiography, Foundations of Image Acquisition and Interpretation” is designed to provide modern users of these new “echo stethoscopes”, as well as advanced trainees in echocardiography, with a solid foundation and practical guide.

Is the Black Church dying? The picture is mixed and there are many challenges. The church needs spiritual revival. But reviving and strengthening the Black Church will require great wisdom and courage.  Reviving the Black Church calls us back to another time, borrowing the wisdom of earlier faithful Christians. But more importantly, it calls us back to the Bible itself. For there we find the divine wisdom needed to see all quarters of the Black Church live again, thriving in the Spirit of God. It’s pastor and church planter Thabiti Anyabwile's humble prayer that this book might be useful to pastors and faithful lay members in reviving at least some quarters of the Black Church, and churches of every ethnicity and context— all for the glory of God.

This is a great book and Pastor Anyabwile brings the taboo subject of how things have gone sideways in the "Black Church" to the forefront. I'm 48 and raised as COGIC atmosphere but now Baptist. I recently felt "the call" and as I was waiting to meet with my pastor to talk about my aspiration, I came across this book. I now use this book as my guide of what not to do in ministry and how the Bible should kept centered in the preachment moment. This book isn't for everyone but for those who want to revive dead areas in their church this book is a must have. And for those inspiring leaders this book is INVALUABLE.

My only complain about this book is he author's use of the term "The Black Church". I believe preaching be it good or bad is not limited to the confines of ethnicity. If Thabiti will cross out the word "black", it is my belief he would reach more people with this message.

Research on human beings saves countless lives, but has at times harmed the participants. To what degree then should government regulate science, and how? The horrors of Nazi concentration camp experiments and the egregious Tuskegee syphilis study led the US government, in 1974, to establish Research Ethics Committees, known as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to oversee research on humans. The US now has over 4,000 IRBs, which examine yearly tens of billions of dollars of research -- all studies on people involving diseases, from cancer to autism, and behavior. Yet ethical violations persist. At the same time, critics have increasingly attacked these committees for delaying or blocking important studies. Partly, science is changing, and the current system has not kept up. Since the regulations were first conceived 40 years ago, research has burgeoned 30-fold. Studies often now include not a single university, but multiple institutions, and 40 separate IRBs thus need to approve a single project. One committee might approve a study quickly, while others require major changes, altering the scientific design, and making the comparison of data between sites difficult.Crucial dilemmas thus emerge of whether the current system should be changed, and if so, how. Yet we must first understand the status quo to know how to improve it. Unfortunately, these committees operate behind closed doors, and have received relatively little in-depth investigation. Robert Klitzman thus interviewed 45 IRB leaders and members about how they make decisions. What he heard consistently surprised him. This book reveals what Klitzman learned, providing rare glimpses into the conflicts and complexities these individuals face, defining science, assessing possible future risks and benefits of studies, and deciding how much to trust researchers -- illuminating, more broadly, how we view and interpret ethics in our lives today, and perceive and use power. These committees reflect many of the most vital tensions of our time - concerning science and human values, individual freedom, government control, and industry greed. Ultimately, as patients, scientists, or subjects, the decisions of these men and women affect us all.

The Ethics Police?: The Struggle to Make Human Research Safe, by Robert Klitzman

Review "In this intelligent, rigorous book, Robert Klitzman looks at the morality of morality-at how the bodies set up to protect research subjects can end up injuring us all. This examination of our confused notions of safety, honesty, and transparency demonstrates that none of these is simple, and that in striving toward any one, we easily betray the others. It is a book about how seeking to do the right thing can lead to justice, and about how equally often it fails to do so." -- Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon and Far From The Tree

"Few institutions in America are as powerful and yet as invisible to the public as scientific Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). In this important, pioneering book, Robert Klitzman details the challenges facing IRBs today and offers concrete proposals about how they might function better tomorrow. " --Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education

"In this thoughtful and probing study, Robert Klitzman concludes both that the IRB system is flawed but that the boards do not by and large operate as an abusive police and are most assuredly needed. The first scholar to examine the memberships of the boards and the contents of their deliberations, Klitzman, himself a physician and scientist, finds that his colleagues might get along better with their IRBs if they appreciated the difficulties of the tasks they face. He also proposes significant reforms in the structure, approach, and procedures of the IRB system that make this book a must read for anyone concerned with balancing the protection of human subjects and safeguarding the practice and progress of science." --Daniel J. Kevles, Stanley Woodward Professor of History, Yale University

"Protection of participants is an important--and inescapable--part of the contemporary world of research. In this sensitive exploration of the groups charged with that task, Robert Klitzman elucidates the complexities of human subjects protection and the reasons why it so often seems less-than-optimal. If we are ever to do better, we must begin with precisely this sort of in-depth appreciation of the challenge of balancing the advance of knowledge with the protection of our fellow human beings." --Paul S. Appelbaum, MD, Elizabeth K. Dollard, Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine & Law, Columbia University

"Robert Klitzman has opened wide the door on the arcane world of institutional review boards (IRBs) and interviewed their members, chairpersons and administrators. He reports on what they think about their own power and performance and their influence on the conduct of research. Based on these perspectives, Klitzman makes the case that IRBs should be shifted to a more humanistic model that recognizes the complex psychological, social and cultural forces that influence their decisions. This is an important insight into this little understood but essential institution." --Robert J. Levine, MD, Yale University

"Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are both vilified and venerated. With the stakeholders in biomedical and behavioral research holding such starkly different views, one has to wonder, what is the IRB trying to achieve? Robert Klitzman takes a novel approach to this puzzle: he asks IRB chairs, members, and administrators how they make their decisions and why. The result is a fresh and revelatory picture of the limitations as well as the strengths of the 'Ethics Police' that will interest IRB members and administrators as well as investigators who want to move beyond bemoaning the burdens of ethical review. Dr. Klitzman's findings are indispensable for anyone trying to improve the current system, whether at an institutional level or through revision of the Common Rule." --Alexander M. Capron, University of Southern California and former Director, Department of Ethics, Trade, Human Rights and Health Law, World Health Organization

"This extremely valuable volume has done more than just reveal what should be retained, discarded and added to the role and tools of the IRB. It is an indispensable resource for clinicians, researchers, medical libraries, schools of law and for medical ethicists. 'IRBs must allow more research on themselves' Klitzman declares. His own work is a brilliant inaugural step." -- Harriet A. Washington, author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present

Featured in Science Magazine

"The Ethics Police? The Struggle to Make Human Research Safe is an essential resource for any human subjects protection program interested in improving its processes and results." --Norman M. Goldfarb, Journal of Clinical Research Best Practices

"Klitzman's interviews and surveys have produced useful information...offering the subjective worldview of IRB members...nOne of Klitzman's most surprising findings is how little IRB members understand how much power they wield... [A]ny critic of the current system will find it in plenty of evidence that drastic reform is needed." -- Society

Featured in Society

"This is a detailed first look at a critical aspect of U.S. medicine that may not mesmerize causal readers, but should prove indispensable for reform." -- Publishers Weekly

"The book succeeds in providing readers with an insight into a system that operates 'at complex intersections of science, politics, sociology, psychology, money, and ethics'." --BioNews

By hambone The whole time I was reading this book I kept thinking, "Why have I never been told about this before? Why didn't I know that these so-called 'ethics police' even existed?" Klitzman is writing about something really important, something that lies far beneath most of our radar and the media radar. Klitzman's point of view is scholarly, balanced and well-informed -- he knows whereof he speaks -- but his measured tone makes the information all that more disturbing and occasionally alarming. Reviewer alert: I know Robert and came to his book because of friendship, but what I found was a study and narrative that deserves a far wider readership than I had expected. I am not an academic. I am not at all in the same field. But again and again I felt he was writing for me, a concerned citizen, bringing me up to speed on a little-known subject.

By Susan Emmerich If you’ve ever been guilty of holding on to the past, Nicole Eva Fraser’s new novel, “I Don’t Think It’s That Simple”, gives voice to those emotions that keep us stuck. With her talent at exposing human frailty, Fraser, in this her second book, had me both embracing and hating her main character Evan. We see both his best and worst in this complicated story of lost chances and the dangers of hanging on to dashed hopes. The author is skilled in developing characters that are authentic and relatable, forcing the reader to listen to those voices from the past that sometimes irritate our wounded hearts. With these words: Begin; the rest is easy.”, Fraser reminds us that living in the present is the key that opens the door to healing. If we don’t wait too long! “I Don’t Think It’s That Simple” is thought provoking and intuitive. Not to be missed.

I must admit, I did not like her main character, Evan, which made reading difficult. I found him to be arrogant, full of himself, narcissistic yet, so insecure that he could never commit to anything, especially himself. I felt Ms. Frazer’s character, Julia, expressed everything that was wrong with Evan when she said about her own life, "Life is all mine now -to fly or fall- it’s up to me." She said this while all Even could think of was himself. Not my type of person at all.

After millennia the syndicate’s goal is about to be realised by wiping the human slate clean and creating an intellectually elite race. There is a flavour of Arthur Conan Doyle is the writing style, which, though set in the modern day, holds the flavour of handsome cabs and gas-lit streets. But beware, the gentle style leads the reader down dark alleyways to even darker secrets. Just what are the Black Pearls, what secret do they hold, and just who - or what - is Neath Pilgrim? Pilgrim and her companion, Henry Baxter, need answers, and time is running out...
