Great Commentary for Pastors and teachers of 1&2 Kings By Josh Ray The Christ-Centered Exposition series is edited by David Platt, Daniel Akin, and Tony Merida. They have four goals for this commentary series, which they list in the introduction. 1) They seek to display exegetical accuracy. What the Bible says is what they want to say. 2) This series has pastors in view. It is designed to aid in sermon prep and drawing out the themes and applications from the text, not to be academic in nature. 3) They want the series to be known for helpful illustrations and theologically driven applications. And 4) they want to exalt Jesus from every book in the Bible.exaltingTony Merida, who is the lead pastor of Imago Dei Church in Raleigh, NC and associate professor of preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, is the author of the volume on 1 & 2 Kings. The book is divided into eleven chapters on 1 Kings and nine chapters on 2 Kings. Though 1 and 2 Kings have more chapters than that, Merida does what he terms “sectional exposition” (5) and does not treat every verse individually but treats every section. Some chapters in the commentary treat multiple chapters of 1 or 2 Kings (i.e. chapter 1 covers 1 Kings 1:1-2:46) but other chapters focus on a single chapter from Kings. Each chapter of the commentary begins with a “Main Idea” summary that encapsulates the theme or main point of the unit of Scripture. Then comes an outline of the section that will be covered and an exposition of each section of the passage according to the outline. Merida sums up the themes of the unit of Scripture and concludes each chapter with reflections on how this passage fits with the bigger story the Bible is telling and also how it impacts us today. At the very end of each chapter are questions for discussion and reflection. This commentary specifically and the series in general do exactly what they aim to do and do it well. If you’re looking for a verse-by-verse analysis that goes into great detail about the historical/socio-rhetorical background or parses every single Hebrew word and explains them you won’t find that here. But if you’re looking for a resource to help you teach others these admittedly at times hard-to-explain passages and relate them to the gospel, this is the book for you. I recommend this book and series to all pastors and Bible-teachers looking for an accessible yet robust commentary that takes the Bible seriously and makes much of Jesus. Thanks to Zondervan and B&H Bloggers for the review copy, which I received for free in exchange for an impartial review!

Sometimes reading the Old Testament may feel like you are reading a history book where you are study the events you know and avoid the rest because it does not interest you. At times for me, reading the Old Testament can be depressing because you see a God who pursues His creation and they want nothing to with Him. Those who want to honor God fall short because of moral failures or they have been deceived. The books of 1 & 2 Kings are two of those Old Testament books that can cause Christians to be depressed, of course, I am speaking from my own experience in reading the Old Testament. What we fail to see that is the Old Testament, including 1 & 2 Kings, point us to Jesus Christ. The gospel of Luke tells us that when Jesus began teaching the two men on the road to Emmaus, he began "with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself" (Luke 24:27). Tony Merida has taken the books of 1 & 2 Kings and show us how they point us to Christ. One of the main points is that Jesus is a better King than all of the kings in these two books. He also wrote that "Kings is about worship, the word, and weakness." In worship, we refer to the worship of God alone and not idols. In the word, God told His people how to love. Finally, weakness is about how every human king has limitations, which is why Jesus is a better King. Merida takes each chapter and addresses what is happening the story of Kings. He also applies it to our modern living and takes us through the gospel. This commentary is part of a series of commentaries that are easy to read for those who are preparing a sermon or teaching a small group. You can even use them in your own personal Bible Study. I must admit, a commentary on 1 & 2 Kings is not one I would pick up just for the fun of it, but I am happy to recommend this commentary and any others in this series.

Although written primarily for busy pastors to aid in their “weekly preparation of biblically faithful and gospel-inspired sermons,” the textual content written in modern day language makes this version manageable for all walks of life. Easy to understand is not the only characteristic readers will find beneficial. Tucked within the pages of this series are: • “helpful illustrations and theologically driven applications” • the display of exegetical accuracy • a Christ-centered emphasis that aims “to honor the historical particularity of each biblical passage,” as well as “highlight its intrinsic connection to the Redeemer” While some commentaries may only cover the easy topics, this version does not shy away from the more challenging subjects, battles, and gruesome exposes. The author speaks as to why he provides a deeper look into these stories. “Many of the stories in Scripture are difficult to understand and stomach, but that doesn’t mean we need to avoid them or we cannot make sense of them.” Merida continues his reasoning for including them by reiterating that “All Scripture is God breathed and profitable (2 Tim 3:16), and even these puzzling stories are for our good (1 Cor 10:11). We simply need to try to understand them.” Merida grapples with some of these difficult topics throughout the chapter titled Four Types of Hearts; a segment that covers 2 Kings 6:8-8:29. This section reminds us that “God reveals Himself in word and deed . . . yet not everyone responds in repentance and faith.” Thankfully, Merida doesn’t sway from biblical truth as he explores the consequences of moral depravity, the rewards of obedience, and the salvation Christ offers to all mankind. There is such an incredible amount of meat in this volume that it would be impossible to discuss every component. However, if you find yourself in need of a deeper look at a topic from the books of Kings, I recommend you check out the Christ-Centered Exposition Exalting Jesus in 1 & 2 Kings by Tony Merida. The author provides the reader with a user-friendly volume packed with many insightful nuggets.

J. I. Packer: An Evangelical Life, by Leland Ryken

Review

“This book offers a full and balanced portrait of a diligent and faithful theologian. But because J. I. Packer’s theology has always been pastoral, practical, catechetical, and eminently readable—instead of recondite, esoteric, or merely academic—it is appropriate that this welcome volume is itself down-to-earth, accessible, and reader friendly. Leland Ryken, as a veteran student of the Puritans, is the ideal author to write about the most influential Puritan of our time.”—Mark A. Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame; author, Protestantism: A Very Short Introduction

“This book is a fascinating, insightful, and, to my mind, precisely accurate portrait of the same Jim Packer whom I have known for more than thirty-five years. What a joy to read this book and be challenged by Packer’s remarkable life!”—Wayne Grudem, Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary

“Without a doubt, this is now the definitive, most up-to-date biography of J. I. Packer, and it deserves high praise. With the sensitivity, wisdom, and sheer humanity that a fine biographer needs, Leland Ryken allows us to see the life, mind, and heart of this quiet but highly influential man. Traversing the notoriously complex and hazardous terrain of UK and US evangelicalism with impressive sure-footedness, Ryken not only helps us understand the man and his context, but ourselves as evangelicals.”—Michael Reeves, President and Professor of Theology, Union School of Theology, Oxford, England; author, Delighting in the Trinity, The Unquenchable Flame, and Rejoicing in Christ

“A friendly portrait of a great evangelical, the man behind the headlines, full of insight into Packer’s genius as a brilliant communicator of the Reformed faith.”—Andrew Atherstone, Tutor and Latimer Research Fellow, Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford

“It is such a pleasure to read Leland Ryken’s biography of Dr. Jim Packer. Personally, I have been deeply blessed by Dr. Packer’s writing and teaching ministry for over fifty years since, as a student, I picked up “Fundamentalism” and the Word of God. I can also testify that his Knowing God was most often nominated by my seminary students as a work that profoundly influenced them. To be able to read about the man himself and to understand how God gifted and shaped him has been a moving and edifying experience. This is a good book about a great man.”—Peter Jensen, Former Archbishop, Sydney, Australia; Former Principal, Moore College

“J. I. Packer is chief among the cadre of impressive British thinkers who have had a shaping influence on evangelical Christianity in North America over the past half-century. Indeed, his influence girdles the globe, and it shows no sign of abating as this great theologian approaches his tenth decade. This new biography builds on earlier Packer studies, but it offers distinctive insights into the humanity and ministry of a life lived well, with grace abounding and wisdom from above.”—Timothy George, Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School; General Editor, Reformation Commentary on Scripture

“For evangelicals, J. I. Packer stands as one of the foremost theological leaders of this generation. His writings have illuminated the minds of countless Christians with the clarity of the Bible’s teaching. He has answered our questions, provoked our thinking, expanded our understanding, and always pointed us to Christ. I’m so glad that Crossway has produced this biography of the man behind the words.”—Phillip D. Jensen, Evangelist and Bible Teacher, Two Ways Ministries

“Not every life warrants a book-length biography. But then, J. I. Packer’s is no ordinary life. Widely and justifiably regarded as one of the most influential evangelical theologians and Christian statesmen of the last one-hundred years, this meticulously written and remarkably insightful biography of one of my personal heroes deserves a wide reading. Packer’s impact on the Church will be felt and seen for years to come and I happily applaud Leland Ryken’s perceptive portrait of this truly great Christian man. I cannot recommend this too highly.”—Sam Storms, Lead Pastor for Preaching and Vision, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

By Adam Shields I have read several of JI Packer’s books but I really did not know anything about him. I knew he taught at Regent University and was an Anglican. But beside those facts everything else that I had assumed about him was wrong.JI Packer grew up in a working class home in before showing his strong academic skills and winning a scholarship to Oxford. There he quickly became a Christian and soon was pursuing training to become a pastor. But after spending a year teaching between his undergrad and graduate degrees teaching has always been a part of his focus. As was traditional in earlier generations, Packer served as a pastor early in his career before becoming a full time seminary professor. Packer has always primarily focused on the training of pastors and that has meant that he has not taken teaching positions that were as high profile as he could have. After several years teaching and writing, Packer became the director of Latimer House. Latimer House was designed to give Packer and others space to write and think and speak without giving them teaching responsibilities. It seems similar to a Christian version of the idea of Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton that was initially directed by J Robert Oppenheimer and included luminaries such as Albert Einstein. At Latimer, Packer was a prominent figure in British Christianity. But the pace of speaking and writing about current events and the huge number of committees and study groups that Packer was asked to serve on left him exhausted. After nearly 10 years he left Latimer he went back to teaching (after a brief stint as a college president). Packer taught at Trinity College and then at Regent College in Canada. In addition to his teaching, Packer has been known for his work around the bible. He was general editor for the ESV bible, a huge undertaking. Packer has been known as a key figure in the inerrancy debates and a member of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.Packer has also been known for his ecumenical work. Packer worked hard early in his career to keep the Evangelical wing of the Anglican church inside the Anglican church and active in ecumenical work and to keep it from splintering off. Later Packer played an important part in the Evangelicals and Catholics Together statements. More recently Packer left the Canadian Anglican church and helped to form what is now the Anglican Church in North America.Ryken knows Packer well, has worked with him often and greatly respects him. That admiration shows through clearly in the book and helps to make Packer a likeable figure throughout. Ryken resists a lot of analysis, which I think is a disservice to the book. He explicitly says he has made the choice to simply tell the story and illustrate his ideas, but it seems to me that part of the role of a biographer is to do the analysis.Where Ryken was willing to do analysis is on Packer’s writing style and methods. This was an unusual section for a biography. But given Ryken’s own background and Packer’s wide ranging writing, a long look at the themes and style of Packer’s writing was probably helpful. Ryken also is willing to say that although Packer is against topical sermons and for a strictAs much as this biography has helped me understand more about JI Packer, the the actual writing seems to be more clunky than I would expect from Ryken. The same phrases were repeated over and over again. Maybe this was more noticeable because I listened to it as an audiobook, but it was distracting. He also kept saying, ‘a random sample from his writing’ and then listing examples to prove a particular point. It was clearly not a random sample. I know this is a small point, but Ryken knows better than this and I can’t understand why he said this (at least a dozen times). The same with ‘it is not in my purposes of this book to discuss X, but,…’. The result sounds like Ryken just did not spend enough time editing the book.Ryken also heavily borrowed from Alister McGrath’s previous biography of Packer during the first section of the biography. Certainly McGrath and Ryken had different goals in their books, and Ryken was right to be citing McGrath when he was borrowing from him, but it seemed to me that it was a sign of inadequate preparation more than anything else. And in many ways it made me wish I had picked up McGrath’s biography instead, although it is almost 20 years old at this point.Ryken divided this biography into three sections. The first section was the traditional narrative of Packer’s life. The second section was an attempt to illustrate who Packer was as a thinker and man. I think this was the weakest section of the book. The third section looked the main themes Packer’s work, his work around the bible, his academic study of Puritans, his work in the Anglican church, his theology, his thoughts and teaching on Preaching and the role of the Pastor among other topics. The third section was helpful but uneven. I respect Packer and his work even though I have many areas of disagreement. And it is in this third section that the disagreement comes up frequently. Ryken is helpful in cataloguing his research, but that lack of analysis, and too much reliance on lists of data points really keeps this biography from being great. This will probably be the last full biography of Packer while he is still alive. Ryken interviewed him for the biography and those interviews featured prominently and were very helpful. But I think it will probably be only after Packer passes away that a full biography that can look at his life and legacy be fully written. There is certainly a place for biographies like this one. Biographers that know the subject well have great insight into their subjects. But more distant biographers also have greater objectivity.

It’s not only that I enjoy peering into people’s lives, but also that there is so much to learn about life and faith by reading about other people. Biography, and Christian biography in particular, shows Christianity lived, realized in God’s people.New from Leland Ryken is J.I. Packer: An Evangelical Life. The publisher’s description does a good job of describing what you’ll encounter in the book’s pages: “Over the last sixty years, J. I. Packer has exerted a steady and remarkable influence on evangelicalism. In this biography, well-known scholar Leland Ryken acquaints us with Packer’s life, heart, and mind, tracing the outworking of God’s sovereign plan through his childhood, intellectual pursuits, and professional life. Filled with personal anecdotes and little-known facts, this appreciative volume sheds light on the key themes that have given shape to Packer’s life and thought, highlighting his enduring significance for Christians today.”This is, as the description says, an appreciative biography, written by someone who knows Packer and who has long been an admirer. In that way it is quite typical of other biographies of still-living individuals—it describes the subject’s life and influence, but without much emphasis on his weaknesses.Ryken dedicates the book’s opening pages to explaining why he wrote this book and why he did so in the way he did. "My goal in writing this biography was to enable my readers to know J.I. Packer and to get a picture of his varied roles and accomplishments. It is the man that I wanted my readers to encounter. I therefore rejected the model of the documentary history, which so overwhelms readers with factual data about events and people that the subject of the biography disappears from sight. I have not written a history, but a biography."With this goal in mind, he pursues a unique format that tells Packer’s life through three different themes, each of which has its own section. In the first section Ryken offers an overview of Packer’s life in standard biographical format. In the second section he describes Packer as a man, telling about his personality and passions and offering up some interesting anecdotes. In the third section he traces some of the themes that have dominated Packer’s life and career: the Bible, the Puritans, Anglicanism, and so on.I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know J.I. Packer through this account of his life. Packer’s books have been influential in my life, but I knew very little about his life and career. This biography put his books in their right context and greatly increased my admiration for their author. I came to see that Packer had an outsized influence on modern-day Evangelicalism, and for good reason. He is a remarkably gifted man who has maintained a lifelong commitment to understanding, defending, and explaining the Christian faith. My favorite parts of the biography are the ones that simply tell little facts about his life. I loved hearing about his first meeting with Kit, the woman who would eventually become his wife. Packer went for a Sunday afternoon walk with a church group and watched as Kit kicked off her shoes and walked barefoot. This free-spirited gesture intrigued and attracted Packer who very quickly realized he was drawn to her. Isn’t that exactly the stuff life is made of?For all the biography’s strengths, there are also some significant holes, and I am not sure if they are intentional or unintentional. Is there a reason that we never learn anything about Packer’s children apart from the briefly-mentioned fact that they were adopted? Why is nothing said about J.I. Packer the father? And whatever happened to Kit? Ryken tells of their courtship and marriage, but then she almost disappears from the narrative. Is she still living? Is there nothing to say about Packer the husband? Did he manage to be an effective husband and father even with his rigorous travel schedule and all his other responsibilities? Surely if there are several pages dedicated to his love of jazz music there could have been some discussion of his family life.It has long been my observation that the best biographies are written after the subject has died and the story of his life has been completed. There will be time enough to provide a deeper analysis of Packer’s life and influence. For now, J.I. Packer: An Evangelical Life gives us a glimpse into the mind, heart, and life of one of modern-day Evangelicalism’s most formative figures. My few frustrations aside, I was still glad to read it and glad to have encountered its subject within its pages. I thank God for J.I. Packer.

Packer, and reading this book hasn't changed that fact, as the author is obviously and explicitly also an admirer. But frankly getting bogged down in all the minutiae of squabbles between Anglicans and evangelicals and such is wearisome. Also, the author tells us that Packer got married, but there is absolutely nothing about his family life as an adult. Did he have children? Maybe I should Google that, because this book certainly doesn't tell me!Also, the book needs a good editor. The author repeats himself far too often. I kept getting the feeling that I'd read a certain fact told in a certain way before--and I had.

You can find cheaper books on pain management of the same caliber. If youre a simpleton who is incapable of critical thought-then this book is for you. The authors offer their opinion in a dogmatic fashion- typical of doctors who have an uncritical committment to their profession. No wonder pain care in America isn't evolving for books like this one assume a simple and reductionistic approach to pain care. The authors make no note of the reproducibility crises- so the facts they refer to are quite questionable- as their is suppressed evidence in pain care due to publication bias.

An Author to Watch By Linda Benson I was immediately drawn into this story, with engaging characters and locales covering three Western states that I know quite well. With a gutsy, impetuous heroine, a sexy artist boyfriend, and a kick-ass dog who plays a large part in the story, there is much to like about this contemporary love story, where families and cultures merge and collide in a rollicking good tale of sex and mayhem. Ms. Samoranos writes with guts and passion, and I look forward to reading more of her work!

Children don't come with instruction manuals By Denniger Bolton I feel that Mr. Noot has captured the essence of good parenting in this little, but right to the point, book on parenting styles. We, as parents for the most part don’t have a manual and even though parenting is probably the most important aspect of our lives, as parents and as children, we pretty much have to wing it and learn as we go. My parenting days have pretty much passed, since my kids are grown now, but as a reader of books and adviser of what works and what doesn’t, I can say that this book is right on. I especially liked the definition of parenting styles that Mr. Noot described. It’s worth the price of the book to find out where you are as a parent and what kind of kid you can expect. Well worth reading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is an impressive book! By Maria Caridad Lopez III While it gives practical and insightful ways to understand and parent your children, it is not about a technique. It is about understanding your heart and soul as a parent, and learning how to give that to your children. V. Noot does so by helping us examine the dynamics of our own upbringing so that we can make the changes in our relationship styles that create rewarding and healthy relationships with our kids. He makes it easy to find the best style to relate to your child based on their personality. Read this book and see how much sense it makes.

34 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Supernatural Suspense at Its Best By Cara Putman Book of Days is a page-turner from James Rubart. With some authors it's hard to sustain the success of a first novel. But with this book, the author has exceeded the skill he showed with his debut release.Cameron Vaux's losing his mind. Each day it feels like his memories are slipping farther and farther away. In a desperate effort to restore them and avoid the end his father faced, he makes a desperate bid to find the Book of Days, a mysterious volume that both his father and his wife made him promise to find before they died. The search takes him to a small town in Oregon that is filled with secrets and hidden agendas. If his plight weren't so desperate, it would be easy to give up but he can't.He is helped on his search by his reluctant friend Ann Bannister, who has her own reasons for being in town. And her presence adds a touch of romance to the book. The plot hurtles through twists just like a rock climber who's slipped in their climb. The result is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed and couldn't put down. One aspect that I loved the most is that I did not identify the person behind the suspense thread. In many books lately, I've been able to do that, so it was a welcome relief to have a book that surprised me at the end. This book is perfect for those who like suspense with a twist. This time that twist is what if people thought the book of days really existed...here on earth?

Haschke I recently had the opportunity to review Book of Days, James Rubart's upcoming novel. The book draws from Mr. Rubart's personal experience as his father, who passed away during the writing, dealt with Alzheimer's disease.About the book:Cameron Vaux's mind is slipping. Memories of his wife, killed two years earlier, are vanishing, just as his dying father said they would. So Cameron goes on a quest to find "the book with all the days in it" that both his father and his wife had mentioned to him. He enlists the help of his late wife Jessie's best friend, Ann, an investigative reporter who believes the book is a farce, but in spite of herself is drawn into the search. It quickly becomes apparent that others with evil motivations are also searching for this mysterious book, and are even willing to kill for it.My thoughts:I wanted to like this book. I enjoyed the writing and felt that the characters were well-developed and believable. But the plot? Not so much. It did keep my attention with many twists and turns...I can see that Mr. Rubart doesn't write the type of mystery that you have figured out after reading the first couple of chapters. But the entire premise was just, well, strange. An actual mysterious "book" written by God with all the days of our lives written in it? Maybe so, but not where we can physically locate it. I appreciated the point Mr. Rubart was trying to make...that God does "keep all our days"...but I just didn't enjoy the plotline he used to attempt to communicate that. Still, I felt that the book was well-written and the characters were likable. I wouldn't mind reading more by Mr. Rubart in the future.Book of Days releases January 1, 2011.Julie Gwinn at B&H Publishing provided my advance copy, but all opinions are my own.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant supernatural thriller! By Ane Mulligan Wow! Fast paced and well-crafted, I couldn't put this thriller down. I love it when I find an allegorical thread woven beneath the surface of an exciting book. Like Rooms, Book of Days robbed me of a night's sleep. James Rubart is a Master Storyteller. Novel Journey and I highly recommend Book of Days--it's a 5 star read!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Totally recommend this romance! By Carmen Falcone What a super fun, super original read!Actor Max Oberon needs help to nail the part of Thomas, a man who submitted himself to the whims of Cora. Blogger Ally ends up getting the job, even though she isn’t a dominatrix. But, needing the money to settle her sister’s debt, she agrees, with one rule – he can’t touch her unless she says so.This is how everything gets started, and let me tell you, there’s a lot of laughter, smexy and fun from there on. Ms. Hunter’s writing style is air tight and humorous, and it was so easy to devour this book in one sitting!Nicely done, I totally recommend this! 5 stars!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sexy domination By Trudi_Maree A fun and sexy mistaken identity story, in which the heroine Ally (a journalist in need of a story) pretends to be a dominatrix when hunky up and coming movie star Max needs a bit of practice for his latest role. I loved the characters, and the whole situation they found themselves in. A great read, and I'd recommend it to others.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Acting Submissive By Aurora Dawn How To Master a Millionaire has a plot line that would do the best sit-coms proud. Ally, a down and out blogger with more debts than readers and zero self-confidence after her recent breakup with a selfish, manipulative and abusive ex-boyfriend finds herself accepting a “coaching” job from the very hot Max Oberon, a model turned actor who’s preparing for his next role. Julliard graduate Max is pure method acting and he’s been struggling to understand the headspace and motivation of his new subject, a competent, confident cop who falls for Cora, a drug “king pin” he’s been assigned to investigate. Detective Thomas is so taken with her that he willingly plays submissive to his new “mistress” both in and outside the bedroom, willingly altering evidence, providing her with details of the police investigation and eventually even killing to protect her.For Max, a hard luck kid from the streets, being willing to surrender that much control to anyone else is something he just can’t get his head around. To help him understand the role, he decides to hire a professional dominatrix for a week to help him get into the role. Ally has zero experience as a dom, but she really needs the money so she signs the contract. Max’s $10,000 retainer will go a long way to reducing the pile of bills scattered around her bedroom, and the week in a secret location will hopefully provide lots of material for numerous juicy blog articles which should boost the blog’s readership and attract loads of cash-generating advertising. What follows is a funny, touching and smoking hot story that made me laugh and cry and want to take cold showers, sometimes all at the same time. Like the best of sit-coms, it touches on some very heavy issues and sometimes borders on tragedy but it does so in a sensitive and sympathetic way.I LOVED Ally and Max’s story and I think you will too.
