Sad for Jakob's family that was in the genocide in Eastern Europe in the early 1900s. Sad for the heroine that can't have children. Sad that she didn't visit her mother sooner; sad for the decline of her father. Sad for the high school friend that made a mess of his life. Sad for the other people in the nursing home. It's a lot of sadness. There are glimpses of hope and redemption, but for me they were overwhelmed by sadness. Even when things turned out better I felt regret for what could have been. That part of it was very true to life; during that time in history there was much sadness. It is interesting to read about Jews that became Christians as Jakob's family did. They definitely had a strong faith since they risked so much to believe. However, the majority of the faith that is talked about is from memories of family members that have already died. It is good that they were strong witnesses that were well remembered. It was also interesting to read about the jewel cutting and jewelry business. I enjoyed that it was woven in throughout the story in different times and different eras. The book does alternate between the early 1900s and the late 1900s; as well as between the father's view point and the heroine's. It was not confusing and I was able to follow along easily and know who was talking.I do not have things in common with the heroine so it was hard for me to relate to her. I think the main hero in this book is her father. He is the only one in the current time and the flashbacks. The heroine's high school sweetheart is a good supporting character as is the kind neighbor lady. You can read more of my reviews at http://jendisjournal.com

I absolutely love historical fiction and stories of faith By PSS I absolutely love historical fiction and stories of faith, restoration, and redemption, and this book contained all of these elements so beautifully (and so much more). Amy K. Sorrells has such a special gift with words, and even though I learned extremely difficult things about Jewish persecution in Ukraine in the early 20th century, it was shared in such a touching and unique way. If you enjoyed the book Sarah's Key, you will love this one, too, because of the flashback style of writing mixed with mystery. My simple words just cannot fully express the depth of how much this story affected me. Thank you, Amy K. Sorrells, for another wonderful, inspiring novel!

Couldn't Put It Down By Kariss Lynch Amy Sorrells writes a gripping novel where past and present collide in a beautiful tapestry of emotion and relatable characters. I read an early copy and couldn't put it down! I teared up, I laughed, and I highly recommend. This book will make you treasure memories, history, and the bond of family.
