Dianne Kozdrey Bunnell’s fictional memoir is inspired by the real-life religious hijacking of her two daughters, ages 10 and 12. Janey Powers has broken away from her small town fundamentalist upbringing after being seduced by her minister and is building a new life for herself and her two daughters in Washington. But her freedom has a price. She is being stalked by her former minister, Reverend Logan Churlick, mouthpiece of God, who will stop at nothing to possess Janey's heart and soul and will not hesitate to use her daughters to win her. After Churlick establishes paternity in court, Janey fights to protect her children as they become enmeshed in their battle, innocent victims of a firebombing by the blood of the lamb. Janey faces the unthinkable as she puts into play a desperate strategy Churlick could not foresee - but will it save her girls or will she lose them forever?

Review "This work is a diamond with many facets. Each sparkle is a reflection of the craft of the writer. The Protest gets an A+ and goes to the top of your reading list."  -- Louise Stamper, Commuicator"The Protest is an intensely involving, deftly written saga by Dianne Kozdrey Bunnell of how power, authority, and religion can be abused. A small town has a subtly poisonous nemesis, the Reverend Logan Churlick, whose focus on one small, close-knit family threatens to spell personal detestation. A tautly written and suspenseful tale, The Protest is recommended for community library collections and personal reading lists."  -- The Midwest Book Review"A compelling novel that has an important and potent message, The Protest is an exceptional work." -- Ron Chapman, Radio Station KUNM-FMPermission to reprint from the book, The Parental Alienation Syndrome granted by Dr. Richard Gardner,Columbia University. -- Dr. Richard Gardner, Clinical Professor of Child Psychiatry, College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia UniversityThe Protest examines the insidiousness of mind control and the human spirit's power to know truth and get free. -- Steven Hassan (Releasing the Bonds)

From the Author The Protest took me ten years to write and probably saved my sanity when I lost my two daughters to a religious hijacking. My motive? I desperately needed to make something good from this tragic loss, thinking if only I could help others faced with the same, I could survive. And that's exactly what happened. Time and again, when I have done readings of my book at bookstores, libraries, universities, I have seen firsthand how people were helped, how my story was a beacon in the dark. One bookstore clerk, when I announced who I was and that I'd come to do a reading of The Protest, told me she'd just finished my book and she had laughed her ass off and cried her eyes out, then she gave me a big hug and said, "Thank you for writing this book!" Another fan contacted me and said she couldn't put the book down - she had even figured out how to hold it open while she was blow drying her hair.

From the Inside Flap Bolivar shivered. She looked suddenly hallowed. Or unbalanced? Would she do it? The silence about them was a promise, cutting off the outside. Only Jane was with him, her solid breathing, her passion. The kitchen seemed like a holy place, like a beginning.."Christ, you could be killed by those religious nuts.".He felt the crack inside begin, felt the tears sting his nose and eyes. And he saw in the slight rise of her eyebrows and steady eyes, green in their shimmering emotion, what she had been trying to tell him. How, generation after generation, God was politicized, used, and how few throughout history had the courage to confront it. Hadn't he taught the great writers who had tried? And how in this generation Jane was the one to suffer, and offer herself out of her suffering. Why? Why his Jane? God's grace, his Jane, she was the way..In The Protest, twenty-one-year-old Janey Crownhart is the center of Rebecca and Darcy's lives, as they are hers, yet there is a dark spot: Reverend Logan Churlick, a complex, sexy, and compelling foe, who embodies faith gone wrong with his manipulation of scripture and his escalating obsession..Love in its many guises drives the characters of The Protest as the novel takes a humanistic look at the small town community of Rathcreek, Washington. The story is a compelling portrait of the grim force of authority, the power of intuition, and love's redemption.

By Paula R I've taken some time to formulate my thoughts regarding Dianne Kozdrey Bunnell's emotionally intriguing book. The story brought up issues for me. Having been involved in a "Born Again" fundamentalist church as an adult, and having been an abused child on top of it, I immediately recognized the "power over" exploitation by those who were supposed to be mentors and protectors but weren't; and what that exploitation did to my self confidence, self esteem, and ability to choose wisely. Therefore, the story line is understandable to me, but becomes somewhat unbelievable regarding the extreme extent of the occurrences of exploitation, all perpetrated against the antagonist, Janey. I felt that she didn't have any skill at introspection, and that she just didn't get it at times. She wasn't careful enough. But then, after reading the very end, and the Appendixes, I realized that the story, although based in fact for the most part, was a kind of medley of, not only the author's experience, but of many peoples experience with PAS. The explanation to her students, at the end, pretty much said it all. It did however, over explain the symbolism. It brought it into black/white perspective and would have been better if it were more subtle....or perhaps even left out, so as to let the reader come to their own conclusions. I think, if you have to explain your symbolism, then was it apparent at all?The writing--style and language--was exceptional. However, again, some of the "beautiful" prose was out of place almost. Some of the sentences were unduly complex and unnecessarily descriptive...perhaps a bit of English Major flaunting of word usage? I should clarify....I just noticed it, I didn't necessarily dislike it.All-in-all, the book held my interest, provoked strong emotion, and I identified with the serious question of how the Christian experience, in our time, has become so very commercialized and even militarized.

Bartley Dianne Kozdrey Bunnell's powerful novel "The Protest" tells the timely tale of religion gone awry, of religious authority wielded with the intent to manipulate, to isolate, to alienate and, finally, to destroy. Through inspired characters, rich dialogue and unrelenting suspense, "The Protest" chronicles the lives of one family literally torn apart by "Christianity."Ultimately however, Bunnell's story is a hopeful one of survival and resurrection and of the triumph of deed over word. "The Protest" is an important book in a critical time: I would highly recommend it to all concerned by the abuse and misuse of authority and power, religious and political, to create fear and destroy the opposition.

Dianne Kozdrey Bunnell’s fictional memoir is a riveting tale superbly told about the lengths to which a mother’s love will go, as Janey strives to save her daughters from their father. I was alternately laughing and horrified as I read into the night, unable to put it down. It is a terrifyingly credible novel of what can happen when religion is used for personal power, and the manipulation of the lives of innocent children hangs in the balance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves beautiful language, compelling characters, and a gripping read.
