Coco Barrington was born into a legendary Hollywood family: her mother Florence is a mega-best-selling author, and her sister Jane is one of Hollywood's top producers. Jane has lived with her partner, Liz, for 10 years, in a solid relationship. Florence, widowed but still radiant, has just begun a secret romance with a man 24 years her junior. And Coco, a law school dropout and the family black sheep, works as a dog walker, having fled life in the spotlight for the artsy northern California beach town of Bolinas.

When Coco reluctantly agrees to house-sit in Jane's luxurious home, it turns out Jane's house comes complete with an unexpected houseguest: Leslie Baxter, a dashing but down-to-earth British actor who's fleeing a psycho ex-girlfriend. Their worlds couldn't be more different. The attraction couldn't be more immediate.

Suddenly Coco is seeing things differently: Leslie is not just a celebrity, he's a single dad to an adorable six-year-old girl. Her mother is a woman in love, with vulnerability and new insight. And Jane and Liz are about to take the bravest plunge of all - into parenthood.

As Coco contemplates a future with one of Hollywood's hottest stars, as her mother and sister settle into their lives, old wounds are healed and new families are formed - all bonded by love.

With wit and intelligence, Danielle Steel explores love in all its guises, taking us into the lives of three unusual but wonderfully real couples. One Day at a Time is at once moving, thought provoking, and utterly impossible to put down.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. One Day at a Time... Danielle Steel Reader's Anon By Amy Y. So, true enough that maybe there is nothing special here, nothing particularly tragic or earth-shatteringly life-changing, yada yada. I enjoyed that it was female-centric, introspective and had modern elements(lesbian sister, mother of the protagonist dating a younger man).I read the occasional Danielle Steel book to be entertained. And entertaiined I was. She is, at least, consistent. I loved the development of the character of Coco in the beginning portion of the book. Maybe I relate too closely to the exasperation and disappointment of particular family members, who knows, but I really enjoyed the character development. I do think Ms. Steel does take a poke at the chi-chi Hollywood set who chooses names like "Coco" for their children and carries about their itty-bitty poochie-woochies.I dowloaded this book to my kindle and felt it was a decent deal- I likely would not have paid full hardcover price for it.I think Ms. Steel does an excellent job of capturing those depressing and at times debilitating moments when we realize that we are not all that our parents/family/ourselves wish we were. I love that Coco is a dogwalker and is happy with that, loves her dogs and their individual personalities, shares chinese food with them and somehow makes them seem just all that much more appealing than the human beings by whom she is surrounded. How much more cliche can you get than the distraught, discombobulated, unkempt dog-walker suddenly confronted with the world-famous, accent-bearing, heart-throb who is staying at her movie producer sister's home where she just so happens to be housesitting? Yes, the accidental and unavoidable meeting of two totally different people, thrown together by fate(or, uh, Ms. Steel- who does happen to be a bit of a romance novelist, heh). They, of course, bond over a dearth of groceries and a bed-nabbing dog.Like numerous other Steel books, Coco goes on to experience a romance that takes her around the world. Leslie, her movie-star heartthrob, turns out to have a daughter that Coco fall in love with as much as Leslie himself, setting up the picture of what could be a perfect little, ready-made family. Then, in Italy, an incident brings things to a screeching halt. Coco is reminded of an unpleasant childhood incident that appears to be a dealbreaker for her and Leslie. Coco decides it's just not going to work out- Leslie represents too much of everything that she has always resisted in her Hollywood family- the fame, ambition, lack of privacy...I don't want to give away more but Coco returns to find that maybe her family isn't quite as judemental as she thought and she is able to find some solace for her broken heart there. Leslie's daughter Chloe ends up being the bridge that brings the destined couple back together again. After all, who can resist the wiles of one of Steel's adorable, never ill-behaved younglings?Sadly enough, when Coco returns to what her family calls her "shack" in Bolinas, which had been her hideaway where she had kept alive her former lost love, everything has faded and lost it's warmth for her. Steel has her moments of showing us that love transforms both people and places and while Coco's memory of her lost love had been kept a burning ember on the hearth there, the house was still a home and haven. Now, having left behind Leslie, a very real and living love, holding on to the past has lost its lustre.Sure, maybe it's only worth checking out from the library but I found this read sufficiently entertaining. Hello! It IS a romance novel, not Jane Austen- though, honestly, I think I'd rather read this than some of Austen's stuff. Ha!Will Coco end up with Leslie? Will she have the family she has so long denied herself through her own beliefs of dispossession. Steel hits the nail on the head that so often what we perceive to be walls between 'us' and 'them' are simply those barriers we have created ourselves. And the thing I enjoy most about Ms. Steel's writing is that she has nothing to prove and in her simple and eloquent way shows that love does, indeed, set us free.If you are looking for a good romance with some modern elements and not just reams of steamy shower-nozzle masturbation material... this might be a good choice for you. I think most Danielle Steel fans will not be disappointed even if it is not her greatest work ever.

28 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Cookie Cutter Story, Nothing Special By LuvsLabs09 Well, expect the usual Steel repetition. The first 80 pages of the story are about how Coco is the disappointment of her family. Her mom and sister never have anything nice to say about her or her life. It goes on and on.Enter Leslie (male) a Hollywood movie star, who Coco falls in love with. She doesn't like or want the movie star lifestyle. But, she loves him. She doesn't want to face dealing with the press, but she loves him. She doesn't want to be hounded, but she loves him. On and on, we go again.Nothing spectacular or tragic happens in this story. You don't finish this book and think to yourself that it was a great story. Anyone could have written it.I have suspected before that Steel must get paid by the page or words. Its the only thing that makes sense of the constant repetition and lack of substance of her books throughout the last 10 years.Get this one from the library for free. Not worth buying.

18 of 23 people found the following review helpful. silly, sappy, soapy, By Catherine Wienckowski I had not read a Danielle Steele novel in many years and now I see why.So incredibly unrealistic it was actually painful. Is Danielle really writing this or is a computer program? They reiterated the same sentence over and over. Maybe I was young and stupid when i used to enjoy these books. I think I will go back and read some of her earlier stories to see if it was the same sappy formula of a book.

Allie Parsons, ex-stripper and pathology intern in a Tampa morgue, knows that something is not quite right with one of the bodies she's autopsied; meanwhile, a black Mercedes is following her, and disturbing notes keep turning up which threaten the fragile life Allie has created for her and her daughter. It soon becomes clear that these odd events are linked to Allie's own violent past. The setting of Tampa, Florida, is a muggy backdrop for murders gone unsolved for years. Allie flies through the city in her crumbling old car, pathologist turned detective, piecing together clues as a hideous bull of a villain gets closer and closer to her and her daughter. What makes this book so poignant is that, even though Allie is flawed mentally, physically, and emotionally, she is determined to trounce anyone who threatens her child. She draws strength from her faith, and rawboned Pastor Virgil, to keep seeing clearly with the one eye God has left her. After reading Toro, you will want more of Allie Parsons.

Fast-Paced ThrillerI By Ryan Struble As the relentless Florida mugginess hangs over the city of Tampa, the truth behind years of deception and terror are about to be exposed. Enter Allie Parsons, a struggling single mother and medical school resident, and the only survivor of a mystical serial killer known as “Toro.” After years of torment and recovery from Toro’s attack, Allie has received a fresh start, working in a prestigious morgue managed by Dr. Mann, an internationally renowned medical examiner. As Allie begins to break from her tumultuous past, the most terrifying memories from her past come rushing back as a darkness years in the making that will not waver.Allie learns that she can trust no one as she works to uncover true identities of the people closest to her, and reach the next path in her complicated life, before it becomes a dead end. Toro will have you guessing until the end, as Allie Parsons relentlessly faces her greatest fears and uncovers the answer to her leading question: ‘Is Toro still out there?’As the quick chapters pass, Toro is a book where detail and the truth take center stage in uncovering the exact motives of characters and future plot lines. In Toro, readers learn quickly that in this past-paced, fluid story, it is important to not place full trust in characters involved in Allie Parson’s life and to not rule out any possibility as to how characters are connected to one another.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gutsy Girl with a Big Heart By Jennifer Fromke From Stripper to Medical resident, Allie Parsons has worked hard to put a life of bad choices behind her. But when she begins her training in the medical examiner’s office, the nightmare of her past comes roaring back to life, jeopardizing her job, her relationship with her teenaged daughter, and her very life. The story reads like it’s one part Charlie’s Angels, one part CSI. Toro! is an emotionally charged Christian suspense novel about a woman who owns her mistakes, but presses forward to live better, despite overwhelming odds. She’s a doctor, a mother, and sole survivor of a serial killing spree. She’s got guts, a big heart, and an uncompromising spirit. The ending is perfect, but leaves the reader with the burning question,”When is Frank Schwalbe’s next book coming out?”

It's so logical it's scary By Denniger Bolton We've all heard that the paleo dietary plan comes from the paleolithic era which occurred two million years ago. This diet is that old. Somewhere about 10,000 years ago we as a people lost our hunter-gatherer lifestyle of eating wild fruits, vegetables and nuts and of hunting for our meat. Agriculture came into being along with the domestication of livestock. Now days, the only hunting and gathering we do is reaching into the back of the refrigerator for some lost foodstuff. Valerie Childs, the author tells us in this book about this common sense approach which is to feed our bodies with the original fuel for which we were intended. She asks: " Would you put milk in your gas tank?" Valerie is very thorough with how she presents her book. She has done a lot of research, cites the facts, states the benefits, totally debunks all the other so called diets. I know there are a lot of books on diet and the paleo diet is particularly popular. I'd recommend you at least read this book before you switch to any other diet. You won't be disappointed.

By Diva Innovator I just wanted to share my experience with anyone thinking about starting on this diet.I consider myself a yo-yo dieter. Once committed to a diet I do stick to it. The trouble for me arises at Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions. I think to myself, for the next week I will treat myself, it's only Christmas or my birthday once a year right?I've been doing this diet since before I read the book at the recommendation of a friend. I cannot recommend this book and this diet more! In a little over 6 weeks I've managed to lose 5kg and a total of probably about 7-8cms from various parts of my body.Give it a go for a few weeks and see how you get on, you'll truly be surprised.

When the ET's come to eat us, they will dine on the tasty Texans first. Any CIA base on Mars has several neighbors. The Reptilians not only exist, they are our friends and protectors. Surveillance technology is self-defeating. Rebuilding of an ancient temple would presage a worldwide catastrophe. North Korea exists to protect the world from off-world invasions, and belligerence is only a part of the North Korean mindset. To truly understand the intentions of North Korea's leader, we were told, one must understand this hermit kingdom's role in an occult history of humankind. We aren’t entirely sure when we stopped being primarily remote viewers and became trance mediums. A few months before the events that led to the writing of this book, we were doing a series of remote viewing sessions targeted at the moon and we found ourselves (all of us simultaneously) conversing with a human being who lives on the moon. We had no sooner finished that manuscript than we found ourselves once again having a conversation with a man who wasn’t there. This time the entity identified himself as a living human being residing on earth, Kim Jong Un. We are also not entirely sure whether somehow we once again managed to share a hallucination, we were contacted by a powerful “psychic” entity impersonating Kim Jon Un, or perhaps the Kim Jong Un we met is who he said he is. We found this psychic presence – who rousted us all out of bed at 3 in the morning – surprisingly pleasant, strangely rational, and extremely informative. We just don’t know whether to believe a word we think he said. As is the case with so many of our books, we are better at understanding questions than we are at divining answers.

Do I believe you can channel discarnate entities with big egos..yes. Do I find this book very interesting..no. Most of their books are an imaginative romp, whether you believe them are not..Perhaps Korean culture just isn't very exciting..I'd skip this and stick to the remote viewing stuff.

Driven by a desperate caffeine addiction, Matthew Sullivan, proclaimed Golden God of D.M.A.--a popular American pop/rock band, demands that Alex Jennings, fellow bandmate, find him a cafe. It is this fateful demand that creates a collision of worlds that no one was expecting. Nestled among skyscrapers, nightclubs, restaurants, and high end retail shops a quaint coffee shop houses deep conversation of societal idiosyncrasies among three best friends. Riana Graham’s passion was naturally alluring, and it is her eloquent yet fierce discussion with her two best friends, Lexi Galanos and Sam Vincent, that unwittingly draws in Alex, Matthew, and the third member to D. M. A., Alex’s older brother Derek Jennings. Riana becomes consumed by history of a connection between her and Matt which had remained untapped for nine years, as well as a new spark with Alex. Complications quickly arise after public exposure of their forbidden emotions. Alex must decide if the stir of feelings for Riana is worth ending his long term relationship without a guarantee that Riana would choose him over her own long-term, albeit dysfunctional, relationship. Riana is convinced by Lexi to invite Matt, Derek and Alex to her ranch in Arizona where, away from prying public eyes, feelings effortlessly deepen. Riana loses her bearings and makes a decision that sends her reeling. The connection of her lips on Alex’s overwhelms her in ways she isn’t ready for. Her inability to see her own worth breaks Alex’s heart and they all watch as Riana pushes away the only thing good for her. Will Alex be just another man in Riana’s life to use her and walk away? Or will Riana be able to face her past demons head on and finally believe she deserves something good?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A modern love story with a rock'n'roll twist By Asphodelia Riana and her two friends, Lexi and Sam, sit and chat over coffee in a Chicago coffee shop. As they discuss a member of their favourite band, little do they know that the trio known as D.M.A. are sitting right behind them. Until, of course, Matthew, who has been eavesdropping into the conversation all the way along, decide to introduce himself - and the rest of the band - to the unsuspecting fans. It doesn’t take long for Riana and Alex to become close friends: will this blossom into something more?Given the subject and its protagonist I thought that “Disillusioned Love” would be a kind of ‘Almost Famous’ style almost-true-story involving bands and devoted fans (i.e. groupies) but as as the book progressed it became clear that what the novel in my hands was a traditional romance, albeit with more interesting characters than the usual shopping-mad heroines and cardboard cut-out love interests. This was about a band and their fans, so despite my usual aversion for the genre, I soon got hooked. It’s refreshing to read a love story in which the female protagonist has some depth, and Riana, whose troubled past lead to a career as a writer and public speaker, is certainly not your average dizzy female character so popular in a certain type of female-friendly novel. The combination of strong characters and the band storyline was impossible to resist, and by the time I was halfway through the book, I couldn’t put it down: I had to see a certain couple live happily ever after. I won’t tell you what happens in the end, but the good news is that there’s already a sequel in the works. If you’re looking for a modern love story with a rock’n’roll twist you will definitely enjoy this book.

Ashes of Life, by Erica Lucke Dean, Laura M Kolar

Review "A beautifully rendered look at love in all its forms. A must read!"  ~ Kate Moretti, New York Times Bestselling Author "An exquisite tale of love and acceptance, rich with unforgettable characters."                                                            ~ Kelly Stone Gamble, Author of They Call Me Crazy

About the Author About the Authors Erica Lucke Dean: After walking away from her career as a business banker to pursue writing full-time, Erica Lucke Dean moved from the hustle and bustle of the big city to a small tourist town in the North Georgia Mountains, where she lives in a 90-year-old haunted farmhouse with her workaholic husband, her 180 lb lap dog, and at least one ghost. When she's not writing or tending to her collection of crazy chickens and diabolical ducks, she's either reading bad fan fiction or singing karaoke in the local pub. Much like the main character in her first book, To Katie With Love, Erica is a magnet for disaster and has been known to trip on air while walking across flat surfaces. How she's managed to survive this long is one of life's great mysteries.  Laura M. Kolar: Laura M. Kolar lives with her husband and daughter in a one-stop-light town in northern-lower Michigan. Though she didn't discover her love of books until she turned thirty, as a self-declared hopeless romantic, she has spent the past few years reading and writing stories with mostly happy endings. If she's not at her day-job or with her family, you will find her sipping a cup of chai latte while sitting in her favorite rocking chair, hunched over her laptop writing or spending entirely too much time on Twitter.

Even the most devastated and wounded of us can rise from the ashes By Khoth I adore beautiful cover art, and the Ashes of Life cover is one of the most surreal and mesmerizing I've seen this year. I've even coaxed and wheedled my way into getting a poster featuring the cover, because I think it is hauntingly appropriate to the story, and it will be beautiful in a complimentary frame placed on a wall I'll see on a daily basis. The old adage of not judging a book by its cover doesn't hold true here, because the story is as surreal and invokes deep emotion much like the book. The first thing I look for in novels like Ashes of Life is the "believable factor." Is the story realistic, and do the characters' personalities and internal conflicts align with their ages, situations, and stages in life? For this novel the answer is a resounding yes. Ashes of Life is absolutely believable and realistic, and even the strong language is true to life and appropriate to the storyline. Maddie is a grieving 17-yr-old teenager who's lost both of her parents, and for lack of more delicate phrasing, she is an absolute train wreck coping with her grief. A few times I wanted to throttle her for the careless decisions she made, but then I remembered burying my own mother at the age of 16, and I certainly felt like a train wreck, too. Fortunately, I had a decent high school boyfriend to keep me tethered from getting as wild as Maddie, but I still harbored rage and grief at being made an orphan overnight. Maddie's actions and responses demonstrate the reality of a teenager feeling lost and alienated, and I'm relieved when she finds her own anchor.I'm a mother, and I identified with Alex and her frustration of dealing with Maddie (and why she wasn't well-equipped emotionally to do so), and I understand the grief of losing someone you love so much you feel as though you might die from the pain of heartbreak. It resonates deeply within me, and anyone who's had a few hard knocks or many will feel the intensity of emotion in this novel. As Maddie and Alex battle internally and with one another through a series of missteps, they deal with their grief differently but are alike in that they have only a small network of real support. Ultimately, a cathartic climax finally helps them move past their differences, and although still mourning, they do find redemption in love and begin the healing process. The logistics: Ashes of Life was well-developed with three-dimensional characters who experienced more than their share of conflict, but it didn't continue ad nauseam. The misery ended at an ideal juncture, and the ending left me secure in the knowledge of hope being eternal, life continues, and even the most devastated and wounded of us all can rise from the ashes. I loved this book. Well done, Erica and Laura.Disclosure: I received this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I'm afraid to get too wordy, but there are so many elements to it that I was surprised at how much I'd like to say. I'll start off by saying that I read it in a single night (minus a few chapters that I'd started earlier in the week, but I got sidetracked with work and kiddo, you know the deal).First of all, this might be what some call a cozy, and while I am *not* a "cozy" reader I really enjoyed this book. It is told from two points of view: the stepmother and stepdaughter... and it totally works. The emotions are so real, they jump off the page. With every chapter, I could see both sides of this story so clearly. There weren't any plot kinks thrown in to make this work, it just naturally flowed well from both sides. That really surprised me. I wasn't sure how this author would pull of being able to tell the story accurately from a 16 year-olds point of view, but every chapter, I found myself thinking, "Oh god, that was me at her age." As a stepdaughter myself, I found so much of Maddie's point of view to be completely spot on, and now as an adult, I am able to see Alex's point of view just as well with the amount of life that adults deal with on a daily basis. I am still so impressed with how well the author captured these elements. At one point, I was recalling how I felt JK Rowling's Casual Vacancy had so accurately captured character descriptions and the reality of human life... and thought this book was doing just the same, but without the Grapes of Wrath turtle narratives that make you want to skip chapters. Though, around chapter 8 (I think), I also thought that it just might be hitting too close to home. She wrote the elements of grief with such accuracy... the mourning, the feeling of bereavement, the absolute guilt... it was almost too much. Almost. But, there was redemption, and it wasn't the sloppy kind that's thrown together at the end but a gradual progression that made sense. At 4:45am as I was finishing the book up, I had tears (happy tears) brimming my eyes... I might have actually cried if I wasn't dehydrated. We'll never know.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I have to add something to this. I hate free books for reviews. They make me nervous as hell. I feel like if I have to write a bad review, then I've not only reduced an author's chance at more sales, they've also lost a sale on me since it was free to begin with. But, in this case, I feel completely happy with being given a free copy. The book is wonderful, and I really recommend it. If you are wondering why I haven't given it 5 stars, well... that's complicated. I'm usually a Young Adult reader and prefer fantasy elements. It was a very good book, not an overall classic. Though, I will say this... if you have a mixed family, I suggest that you read this. If you find yourself on either side of the line, then this book will absolutely give you insight into the mind of the other. As a side note: I should warn there are some sexual elements to this book, but none of them are explicit in any way. There is cursing, but it was used appropriately and aligned with the story and reality of life. I would have no guilt in handing this to any teenager I know.

A Look Into Love, Loss, Grief, and Redemption By Karen DeLabar ***I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.***Alex just lost her husband, David, of three months to a tragic car accident leaving her with only questions of his death, and his emotionally scarred teenage daughter, Maddie, to keep her company.Ashes of Life puts all the gut wrenching, heart breaking emotions of loss and grief from two different angles, one from a heart broken, pregnant widow, and the second from the grieving, confused teenage stepdaughter, and fuses them together in a bittersweet story of love, loss, and new beginnings. The journey Alex and Maddie take to find the truth in their lives is emotionally charged and left me reeling at some points. I'm a sucker for stories that make me cry and this one did not disappoint. I found myself invested in the characters, I wanted to yell, kick, and scream for Alex, especially when she was dealing with Maddie, and I wanted to run, and rebel with Maddie. My one complaint about the story is the flow; the story follows Alex's life for one chapter then switches to Maddie's the next, and continues like that for the rest of the book. While I understand why this was done, and it did allow for me to get a deeper look inside the minds of these two, sometimes I felt it stunted the rhythm of the book, especially in the beginning. Just when I started to connect with either character in their chapter, the chapter ended and it switched to the other's perspective. I will say as the story continued it didn't seem as distracting because their stories started to meld together as the two characters learned how to deal with each other and the grief of their loss. All in all, this was an excellent read and if you're like me and love a good tear jerker then I recommend you pick up this book... and a box of tissues.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A lively and informative history of Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Haloween and Thanksgiving in the USA. By lyndonbrecht Forbes is a professor of religion at a Midwestern college. His writing is lively (much of the text is somewhat autobiographical), and his Christian background informs his discussion of the holidays in an informed but objective way. He discusses Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween and Thanksgiving. A reader can read one or more chapters in any order. The discussion is in all cases informative, and I suspect any reader will find some new details, even people who have read about holidays in other books. I certainly did so.He notes, as is commonly known, that holiday derives from "holy day" but that the secular sense of a day off goes back to the 1400s. He posits that most holidays, and all of these, have layers if you look at history. One, they start as seasonal events. Two, they acquire some religious or national association, and three, popular culture shapes the observances, differently in different places even of the same holiday.Christmas hearkens back to a end of year, near solstice holiday. Yule, for example, is the name for a pre-Christian holiday in parts of Europe. The holiday has never been purely spiritual, he says, and there's a party aspect still. Deciding on December 25th is discussed in fascinating detail. Among other odd details is the poinsettia, brought from Mexico in 1828 by then ambassador Joel Poinsett. Christmas was forbidden in places, such as 1659 Massachusetts when celebrating it in any way cost a 5 shilling fine. The American Christmas owes a lot to specific people. Cartoonist Thomas Nast created the Santa Claus image as we know it. Clement Moore's Night before Christmas poem is important, as is the "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" column.Valentine's day has some old stories, which likely are not true. Forbes discusses the phenomenon of Valentine's cards and the heart symbol. He says the commonly held belief that Easter comes from a goddess names Eostre is questionable, based on all of two sentences in a work by Bede (if you don't know that name, Google it, he is an important figure). The tradition of rabbits bringing eggs to children seems to stem from Germans who settled in Pennsylvania. Colored eggs for the holiday go back to 1290, as a document regarding King Edward I attests. The chapter on Halloween is quite good; the pumpkin jack'o'lantern results from Irish traditions that involved turnips back home.Thanksgiving is also an interesting chapter. The 1621 event apparently did involve some Indian neighbors, but not sitting at a table with a turkey. It existed by traditional Presidential proclamation from Lincoln to Roosevelt, and became an official holiday tied to a specific day.

Review

If you are confronted with hysterectomy and wish to be proactive in the decision-making process, this book is an invaluable reference.

(Robin Wulffson Examiner.com)

Review

A valuable reference. Is the drastic operation, which is one of the most contentious medical issues, often performed unnecessarily? Are there alternatives? Is the operation's effect on a woman's emotions and sexuality worth it? The authors, who are specialists in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, offer a balanced view.

(New York Times)

The book is presented clearly with information that is current, accurate, and very readable.

(Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

An excellent reference not only for patients but also for nurses, medical assistants, and clerical staff who work in a busy gynecologist's office. The medical information is presented clearly, is current and accurate, and is very readable. There is no comparable book available to the public.

Since what Christian doctrine denies can be as important as what it affirms, it is important to understand teachings about Jesus that the early church rejected. Historians now acknowledge that proponents of alternative teachings were not so much malicious malcontents as they were misguided or even misunderstood. Here a recognized expert in early Christian theology teaches orthodox Christology by explaining the false starts (heresies), making the history of theology relevant for today's church. This engaging introduction to the christological heresies is suitable for beginning students. In addition, pastors and laypeople will find it useful for apologetic purposes.

The Gospel according to Heretics: Discovering Orthodoxy through Early Christological Conflicts, by David E. Wilhite

From the Back Cover "Written with good humor, clarity, insight, and sensitivity to various religious traditions, Wilhite's volume presents ten heresies of early Christianity that introduce the nonspecialist reader to the problematic questions of just what these heretics, as later defined, believed and why those beliefs were later condemned. I know of no better introduction to the topic to put into the hands of students and scholars alike."--Geoffrey D. Dunn, Centre for Early Christian Studies, Australian Catholic University"In the rapidly growing web of interpretations of early Christianity, this well-informed, popularizing study brings about order without imposing simplicity and addresses conflict without attempting to solve it. Turning 'orthodoxy' and 'heresy' with dexterity and caution into analytical tools, Wilhite offers his readers effective insight into the complex world of the early church. His account is neither about winners nor about losers; what it offers instead is a strategy for piecing together a credible early Christian narrative in which history meets theology and both can benefit from the encounter."--Willemien Otten, University of Chicago"This book takes readers from the shallow end of the pool of early Christian theology into deep waters and enables them to float. It gives heresies their due while always keeping at least one eye on the positive message of Christian truth--that is, it is not transfixed by 'the dark side.' It is written with clarity both conceptually and in terms of expression, while being impressively learned. I appreciate in particular the attempt to discuss Reformed Protestantism in a retelling of the iconoclastic controversy and to broach the delicate and intricate subject of early Christian theology in relation to nascent Islam. It is quite a breathtaking achievement."--Mark W. Elliott, University of St. Andrews"This volume is a thoughtful and refreshing contribution to both academia and the church. Avoiding sensationalism, skepticism, and subjectivism, Wilhite carefully reinterprets heresy and orthodoxy with theological nuance, historical acumen, and ecclesial sensitivity. I commend this insightful and accessible book to scholars and students alike as readers are invited to search for the gospel according to orthodoxy, rooted in the grace of Christ, through the gospel according to heresy."--Helen Rhee, Westmont College

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Anathematize Them: A Review of David Wichita's The Gospel according to Heretics By Joseph Johnson Why should the Church ever listen to heretics? How do you define a heretic in the first place? In David Wilhite’s engaging and informative introduction to the early christological conflicts of the Church, The Gospel according to Heretics, he takes on these questions and more with admirable clarity, depth, and sensitivity. Wilhite teaches at George W. Truett Seminary in Texas and specializes in the study of North African Christianity in late antiquity, giving him a good background for taking readers into the world of the Patristic era.In much traditional Christian thinking, heretics were viewed as evil and malicious (p.2). They were to be avoided and their voices were to be silenced if efforts to persuade ended in failure. The early church father Irenaeus, in his work Against Heresies, records that the Apostle John supposedly once fled from a building in order to avoid the heretic Corinth’s (3.3.4). Ignatius also exhorted readers in his Letter to the Trallians to, “cover up your ears in order to avoid receiving the things being sown by them” (9).At first glance, defining heresy doesn’t seem so hard, and at one level, it isn’t: a heretic is someone who holds to false, incorrect teachings that have been rejected by the catholic, universal Church as being outside the boundaries of acceptable Christian belief (p.12). This brings up the complication, however, of who gets to decide what constitutes true doctrine, since heretics often insisted that they were the true “orthodox” believers and that their opponents were the real “heretics.” Thus, Wilhite writes:The point is that in the earliest Christian centuries one couldn’t simply say orthodoxy is the teaching that is true to the Scriptures, because both the Scriptures and their interpretation were being contested. The often-ill-defined core of the Christian faith—not a creed, not a set of Scriptures, but the gospel of Jesus Christ as known in the apostolic preaching and tradition—was the stated difference between orthodox and unorthodox. (p.16)It’s pretty safe to say that the early Church did not interact with heretics sympathetically, viewing them instead primarily as dangerous. In The Gospel according to Heretics, Wilhite questions whether this approach was at times too polemical, leading orthodox writers to sometimes demonize and misrepresent the views of their opponents (p.2). He adds:The best historical studies of the last century have found evidence to suggest that our understanding of the “heretics” is so one-sided as to need revising. This book attempts to take this scholarly assessment seriously, extensively revising our understanding of each heresy. Beyond an understanding of the heresies themselves, such a study of the various unorthodox alternatives that shaped traditional Christian thinking offers those who wish to understand their own orthodoxy a more complete picture. (p.7)Re-examining the early Church’s Christological conflicts is a provocative undertaking, so Wilhite does well to add a few clarifications in his introduction. He isn’t seeking mere sensationalism (think the DaVinci Code), and he also isn’t advocating a hyper-skeptical stance toward traditional Christian thought (pp.3-4). Just because an orthodox writer charges a heretic with immorality and denying the resurrection doesn’t mean that we can conclude the heretical figure must have been a paragon of virtue and believed in Christ’s physical resurrection. Wilhite writes that:This need for critical reading arises simply because of the admitted bias of the orthodox sources. They explicitly claim to be attacking what they think is a false and even dangerous teaching. The orthodox writers, therefore, have tried to tip the scales in their favor as much as possible—something everyone did at that time” (p.4).He also warns that those attempting to critically read orthodox and heretical sources must avoid repeating the mistakes of the 20th century search for the “historical Jesus” (p.5). It’s all too easy to produce a historical reconstruction of the past only to find out that it has sadly become a self-portrait. Complete objectivity may be unobtainable, but that doesn’t leave scholars stuck in a morass of absolute subjectivity. Wilhite correctly argues that, “Even if we accept Nietzsche’s claim that ‘there are no facts, only interpretations,’ we can also move past him with Clifford Geertz and insist that some interpretations are better than others” (p.7).Throughout the book, he takes readers on a case-by-case basis through ten early Church christological controversies, from early ones like Marcionism and Docetism to later struggles such as Apollinarianism and Monophysitism. To get a clearer picture of Wilhite’s project, let’s briefly look at his discussion of the Apollinarian controversy. The story of Apollinaris begins promisingly enough. His father, termed Apollinaris the Elder by historians, was a priest in the Laodicean church. Both father and son hosted the famous anti-Arian figure Athanasius on his way back to Alexandria at the end of his second exile. Apollinaris was a strong proponent of Nicene christology (pp.130-131). Unlike the Arians, Apollinaris had no difficulties affirming Jesus’ fully divine status (p.131). The problem, as Wilhite puts it, is that, “Apollinaris, with other Apollinarians like Vitalis, so emphasized Christ’s divinity that he allegedly lost sight of Christ’s humanity” (p.132).In Wilhite’s eyes, this was in part because some of the technical terms being used by Apollinaris were a bit ambiguous, especially the term hypostasis: This Greek word has the sense of “existence.” The question is whether it implies something’s inner being (i.e. essence) or whether it refers to a specific being (i.e. individual or entity). If it means “inner being,” then it would be synonymous with “essence” or even “nature,” and then God the Father and the Son are one hypostasis/Being… On the other hand, if it implies an individual, then God the Father and the Son are two different hypostaseis, or (we would say) persons. (pp.134-135).Apollinaris sided with the Nicene view that hypostasis should be understood to mean (in English) “person,” rather than “nature,” thereby affirming that the three persons of the Godhead are three in person while one in essence. He went on to insist that the Word of God incarnate was one hypostasis, not two. Wilhite tells readers that, “Some of his opponents could hear this statement on the incarnation as reverting to the earlier meaning of hypostasis as nature, as in the Word incarnate’s one nature” (p.136). For orthodox writers, this was a problem.Wilhite explains that, “For Apollinaris’s enemies, this idea has several possible implications. One is that Christ might only have a divine nature (clearly Apollinaris is not Arian), and therefore that Christ’s one nature/hypostasis is not human” (p.136). Another possibility would be that Christ only appeared to have a human nature, which falls into the error of Docetism. Apollinaris defended himself against these accusations by asserting that Christ was one hypostasis/person and therefore can suffer “in the flesh,” where the flesh is understood to mean the outer person or body (p.137). Wilhite adds, “Whereas the inner person is normally identified as the soul, Apollinaris simply taught that the Word was Christ’s inner person. By using the term ‘soul’ to express his idea, however, Apollinaris raised a number of problems” (p.137). Conceptually the Greek word for “soul” (psyche) included things like the experience of human emotions and human reason. If Apollinaris’s Christ lacks a human psyche, then how can He be thought of as fully human? It seems that Apollinaris did not actually wish to deny that Jesus had a human psyche. According to Wilhite, Apollinaris later shifted his terminology and argued that the Word of God took on a man flesh and a human soul, but that the Word of God replaced what is normally thought of as the human mind (nous in Greek) (p.140). Ultimately, orthodox writers still saw this as an inadequate explanation of Jesus’ full humanity and divinity. In response, they argued that if being fully human means having a human body and soul, and a soul includes a human mind, then the Apollinarian denial of Christ’s nous still resulted in a subhuman Jesus. In the words of Gregory of Nazianzus, “But if He has a soul, and yet is without a mind, how is He man, for man is not a mindless animal? And this would necessarily involve that while His form and tabernacle was human, His soul should be that of a horse or ox” (Letter 101).Ultimately, Apollinaris’s teachings failed to satisfy the famous axiom previously employed against the gnostics heretics. Again, from Gregory of Nazianzus, “For that which He has not assumed He has not healed; but that which is united to His Godhead is also saved” (Critique of Apollinaris and Apollinarianism). By failing to truly assume a human body, the gnostic Christ failed to save/heal the human body. In the same way, orthodox writers concluded that by failing to truly assume a human mind, the Apollinarian Christ failed to save/heal the human mind, or worse yet, that Apollinaris did not see any need for it to be saved/healed in the first place (p.142).In the concluding chapter of The Gospel according to Heretics, Wilhite returns to the contested topic of how heresy should be defined. Throughout the book, he has shown that heretics were more often misguided than malicious. So how does he define it? Wilhite concludes that:Heresy is an inadequate attempt to articulate the gospel. Heresy, then, is a truncated gospel. It is preaching “a different gospel—not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ” (Gal. 1:6-7), and so it must be anathematized (1:9) as heresy. Notice that Paul does not claim his opponents teach falsehood. They simply neglect the full expression of what Christ has done. (p. 248)More often than not, it was only in response to some heretical teaching that the Church formally articulated Christian doctrines (think of the Patristic councils like Nicaea and Chalcedon). In Wilhite’s eyes, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Church was “making up” doctrine. I like how he explains it when he writes that “‘the search’ for orthodox doctrine is not a defense of previously stated doctrine, nor a complete fabrication, but a search for something that is real and waiting to be encountered and discovered” (p.251).Wilhite’s The Gospel according to Heretics is a fascinating introductory work that takes readers on a guided tour to the depths of the debates. It’s a good first read for those who are curious about why terms like homoousios were worth fighting about. Even for those like myself who have read a few books about early Church heresies before, it is an enjoyable book that is worth the read. I recommend it.Disclosure: I received this book free from Baker Academic through the Baker Academic Bloggers program. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and Helpful By Pastor Jim Gray I must confess I am no church historian. Like most Pastors I have been more concerned with the teaching of the Bible than the history of the church. However, I wanted to read this book precisely because of my lack of knowledge on the subject. The author deals with 10 heresies, after introducing the subject of orthodoxy and heresy. In his introduction he reports to revise our view on the subjects. He states that he is attempting to revise or reinterpret the heretics in light of the postmodern condition (p. 7). His says the approach is that of impartialness, although true objectivity is impossible (p. 10). He admits that the terms orthodoxy and heresy are both contested and illusive terms, and do not give precise definitions. Two factors must be considered: First, we must remember many of these heresies were formed before the books of the biblical canon were fully established. Second, the claim of the heretics was that they were orthodox. His purpose is to look at how each heretic and teaching came to be seen as unorthodox (p.17). At the end of the book he makes a good concluding observation: Orthodoxy is a response to heresy, and heresy is an attempt to be viewed as orthodox (p. 247). Is this not true today? He tries to get beneath the embellishments of the opponents of these labeled heretics, which is the source of most of what we know of these men and their views. At times he seems a little too dismissive of the orthodox defenders writings against these heretics. He views the heretics as mistaken more than spiteful. That there views were more inadequate views of the gospel (p. 248); not necessarily a denial of it (although that is the case as well). He endeavors to boil the early heretics down to their primary errors. There are ten early heresies he examines:1. Marcion and the doctrine of Supersessionism, with God of the New Testament supersedes the God of the Old Testament.2. Ebion and the doctrine of Adoptionism, which viewed Jesus as simply human.3. Gnostics and the doctrine of Docetism, that Jesus is God simply looking like man.4. Sabellious and the doctrine of Modalism, hold that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are just costumes of God.5. Arius and the doctrine of Subordination, that Jesus is almost God.6. Apollianaris and the doctrine of Subhumanism. Christ has a human body, but a divine soul or mind.7. Nestorius and the doctrine of Dyoprosopitism, God the Son is a different person who inhabits man Jesus.8. Eutyches and the doctrine of Monophysitism, Jesus is half God and half human.9. Iconoclasts and the doctrine of Antirepresentationalism, holds a nonincarnate Jesus.10. Muslims and the doctrine of Reductionism, that Jesus was a prophet, not God.Forms of these heresies are with us today. Thus, it is important to know and see their roots are longstanding in the history of the church, they rarely go away. Heretics are good at mixing the truth with what is false or inaccurate. Wilhite holds that which heresies presented an inadequate gospel; they did do a service to the church in that heresies helped formulate what was orthodox. (This seems to be the underlying thesis of the author). Heresies may not be equal, but they are equally dangerous by the perverting Christ and His gospel.I found the book informative and interesting. There are times I felt the author was a little too hard on those who stood up against the heretics, and a little soft on the heretics. It is reader friendly and will give an insight both in understanding these heresies and the development of orthodoxy in the early church. It is a helpful work.I received this book free from Baker Academics for the purpose of reviewing it. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Gospel According to Heretics was written to help Bible study students to understand certain ancient Christian heresies from the early church period. This book is not for beginners. Instead of introducing you to the early church, Mr. Wilhite assumes you are already very familiar with it. This book is not about why Christians teach what they teach. It is about why the heretics taught what they taught. You should read standard books on early church history before you will find this book useful. Although I had studied the early church at the college level a decade ago, I would have benefited from some review before reading this book. That said, Mr. Wilhite writes a good reference for people who can add it to their other study materials instead of reading it on its own. He explores 10 early “heresies”—variations from orthodoxy—and shows how they justified their spinoff teachings. He uses humor to make his points memorable. This humor is filled with inside jokes and will frustrate readers who are not familiar enough with the material (i.e. Apollinarianism is “God-in-a-bod.”) His ultimate point is that because of these heresies, the church fathers were driven to state their gospel more clearly. The heretics were actually good for the church in the end, although they did need to be removed. Mr. Wilhite also makes the suggestion that Islam can be seen as one of these early heresies, similar in tone and origin to them, but more extreme. This will be viewed as very controversial by many.Bottom Line: A good academic supplement. Not a great book for light informational reading.I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
