Sabina Spielrein was a Russian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, a respected colleague of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. As a young woman, she was Jung's first psychoanalytic patient, and, during the course of her therapy, they began an intense romantic relationship, which continued for several years. Although Freud himself acknowledged the importance of her work, she nearly vanished from the psychoanalytic landscape for many decades. Only recently have scholars begun to recognize her valuable contributions to psychoanalysis and analytical psychology. In this profile of Spielrein, psychologist Frank Marchese explores the nature of her contributions, notably the idea of the death instinct. He also examines the intricacies of her relationships with Jung and Freud, both personal and professional, and addresses the question of why she was overlooked by the psychoanalytic establishment for so long.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the book is still an easy read for the general reader By A curious reader A fascinating look at the history of psychoanalysis, Dr. Marchese's book highlights the personalities, predilections and quirks of the fathers of the dawn of the modern movement, Freud and Jung as well as many of their contemporaries. Above all, this is the story of, and is framed by their relationship to Sabina Spielrein, one of the first psychoanalytic patients and later a psychoanalyst herself, an almost forgotten vanguard and pioneer of this budding science of the early 20th century. The reasons that her contributions to early psychoanalytic theory have not been widely acknowledged are explored, as well as the nature of the personal relationships and entanglements between herself, Jung and Freud. With this book, Dr. Marchese honours Dr. Spielrein's contributions and life of triumph and tragedy. An especially enlightening read for students of psychology and its history; while the style of writing is at times technical, the book is still an easy read for the general reader.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Dr. Marchese's book is an essential complement to the ... By frank marchese Dr. Marchese's book is an essential complement to the literature tracing the development of psychoanalysis in its early years, especially the overlooked contributions of such analysts as Sabina Spielrein. 'In Coming Into Being', the reader is invited to consider the transformational impact that occurred between Spielrein and Carl Jung during her therapeutic encounter with Jung, an encounter which served as fertile ground for her later theoretical and clinical work in psychoanalysis. Speilrein's contributions were ultimately acknowledged by Freud, Jung, other key figures in Freud's Vienna circle. Yet the question remains, to which the author provides a convincing response, as to why she was overlooked by the psychoanalytic establishment for so long. As a thoughtful introduction to life and contributions of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Sabina Spielrein, 'Coming Into Being' may well rank with Calvin Hall's 'A Primer of Freudian Psychology' in its clarity and intelligibility.

A behind the scenes look at the origins of psychoanalysis By Dr. Robin Alter, author of Anxiety and the Gift of Imagination This book was a joy to read. Extremely thoughtful and engaging. It was a page-turner, filled with lots of insider information and insight about the workings of the early psychoanalytic community and the motivations behind the events of the time. I highly recommend it.

The main point of each devotion in Devotions on the Hebrew Bible comes from a careful reading of the passage in the Hebrew Bible, not from an English translation—written by some of the top biblical language scholars of today. Contributors include Daniel I. Block, Mark J. Boda, Hélène Dallaire, Nancy Erickson, Karen H. Jobes, Bo H. Lim, Tremper Longman III, Miles V. Van Pelt, Bruce K. Waltke, and Michael Williams, among others. The authors use a variety of exegetical approaches in their devotions—including grammatical, lexical, rhetorical, sociohistorical, and linguistic—and each devotion closes with a practical application or spiritual reflection.

Miles Van Pelt, for example, shows that a careful analysis of a grammatical particle in Judges 3:9 elucidates the agent of Israel’s deliverance. Indeed, it is Yahweh who saves! Tremper Longman III explains the role of poetical parallelism in Psalm 1 and highlights how clearly the psalmist invites the reader to introspection, compelling the reader to follow the path of righteousness. And Bo Lim reminds the reader of the biblical precedent for expressing lament. He highlights the poetic artistry of the book of Lamentations, noting its beautiful acrostic, and confirms that both grief and hope provide the rhythm of faith and worship.

Devotions on the Hebrew Bible contains a devotion on every book in the Old Testament and can be used as a weekly devotional or as a supplemental resource throughout a semester or sequence of courses. These devotions will inspire you to keep reading and meditating on the Hebrew Scriptures and find new treasures from the biblical text.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Some Big Weaknesses By Shane Lems It is common for those who have learned Hebrew to forget some of the vocab, syntax, and grammar. Hebrew is a big language, and it does take time and energy to keep it up! So I was excited to receive a review copy of "Devotions on the Hebrew Bible." I haven't read all 54 of these devotions, but I have read a good sample. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Here's why:1) The Hebrew font is super tiny. I'm not sure the exact font size, but it hurts my eyes (and I'm under 40!). I even had to look close to tell the difference between a nun (N) and a gimel (G). The tiny Hebrew font a major weakness of the book in my opinion.2) Each chapter has between one and five (sometimes more) verses in Hebrew with the English in a separate column. This is fine, but I very much wish there was more info on the vocab and parsing. The book doesn't really help for vocab, although some chapters do discuss a few vocab words of the verse. Also, for parsing I had to go to my Bible software for the tough/rare verbs. I wish there were more details about the Hebrew text!3) The devotionals are hit or miss. Sometimes the author makes a great point (e.g. Joel 2:13b-14a has notes that compare the text to Jonah 4:2); other times the application is a little cheesy and off-base (for example, on Gen. 15:6 there is no talk about justification - the author only mentions our faithfulness). In other words, not all of the devotionals are overly stimulating. In fact, one of them I read didn't really discuss the Hebrew text at all. This is a glaring weakness in a devotional to help keep up one's Hebrew! In summary, I think this devotional could be much better if 1) if the Hebrew font was a lot bigger, 2) it had more grammar, vocab, and syntax helps, and 3) the actual devotionals were better. I don't mean to be too harsh, but to be honest, I don't recommend it if you're looking for a book to help you keep your Hebrew.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great idea, but quite rough By Chelsea Liddle This is a really interesting concept that is, unfortunately, poorly executed. The essays are so brief (page and a half to two pages), that there is not enough meat or explanation. Some essays just give in essence a list of facts about the text, but fail to explain the importance of the information. Many essays jumped into talking about specific words, but never sufficiently explained why we were looking at the specific words. I don't really understand how it can be called a devotional, because it seems mostly like a brief scholarly explanation of words, syntax and grammatical nuances. The writing and editing is pretty rough in some of the essays too. Sorry, didn't work for me.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Hebrew language help, thoughtful devotional resource By Leah Chang With contributions from more than two dozen writers, general editors Milton Eng and Lee M. Fields bring us not quite 200 pages of reflections on the textual possibilities and grammatical construction of at least one pericope from each book of the Hebrew bible (Christian canon count). I found no hugely overwhelming "aha!" moments in Devotions on the Hebrew Bible: 54 Reflections to Inspire & Instruct, yet the meditations of about two pages each from fairly conservative Christian scholars and professors in the broader evangelical tradition always are thoughtful, often inspiring. Some of the writers view the texts specifically through a Christological lens, others don't, so this is not quite Martin Luther discovering Jesus Christ in, with, and under every single sentence of the Hebrew scriptures.I especially appreciate the emphasis on the grammatical intricacies of the Hebrew that many of us (most, probably) never became proficient enough in the language to discover on our own. Back of the book includes a Hebrew words index and an index of grammatical terms. Although a couple of Amazon reviewers commented / complained about the size of the Hebrew font, it appears to be the same size as the English text in the main body of the book, though the English translation alongside the Hebrew is set in slightly smaller type. For me, because discerning pointing at the relatively small size ("low zoom") is the tough part, in a future edition a concession to native readers and speakers of languages that write with the Roman alphabet would be considerate. For the devotional insights, the scholarship, and the grammar, this one's a keeper for sure.By the way, some of the Hebrew language and Hebrew bible resources at the end of this book well might interest you. There's also an earlier companion, Devotions on the Greek New Testament.

This box set provided a lot of good informaton on cocunt oil I was never aware of; such as their are 2 kinds of cocount oil, refined and unrefined and which is better for which use.The second book in this box set was on oil pulling and this is the second book on oil pulling I've read. I still haven't started but it's on my to do list and reading through this information again highlighted all the benefits of oil pulling once again. Great box set!

I am always more interested in a natural remedy than in a prescription for anything. The first book in this box set was the most helpful to me. I have very sensitive skin and the remedies that it talks about have been very helpful. The remedies dealing with hair loss have been extremely helpful for my wife, as for a long time it appeared her hair was thinning for no apparent reason. I also really enjoyed the last book because we are thinking of having a baby, and it definitely looked like some good information to have around.

I used to hate coconut oil because of my perception of how it smelled. But, I found a product which changed my perception and so I decided to read books to maximize its uses - I found this book.I have been having hair loss lately because of my psoriasis and coconut oil helped a lot in keeping my scalp healthy and hydrated. As the book discusses, I also use it for my face and legs. It has really worked great. The two other books are a plus. Worth the read!

Each section is well-organized in recommended order to do a detailed and accurate head-to-toe assessment, followed by a brief anatomy section and assessment overview. This is accompanied by possible abnormal findings. All of these things allow the nurse to do a rapid evaluation of the patient and quickly identify any issues that are occurring, so treatment can begin. As with all of NRSNG.com releases, this guide is to-the-point, without a lot of frills. The language is simple, and concise to allow a quick read through and ease of recall. In addition to the detailed study of the process of assessment, this guide also offers access to a valuable Head -To-Toe Assessment Video series and additional resources such as charts, assessment checklists, and a clinical organizer. This is an excellent addition to any nursing student's study aids.

Thought it was going to be in color. It's hard to see cyanosis or red reflex when the pages are black and white and look like they were printed with a printer in someone's home.

The story is about an American Nathan Cooper and Riley Clark who both live in the Bahamas. Nathan’s family owns a multi-billion dollar resort company. However, one would think that life might be a tad easier if one had this much money. But it wasn’t at all. On the contrary, Nathan found that having this much money actually complicated his love life beyond belief. However, what became even more apparent to Nathan is that as soon as women found out that he had a lot of money, they immediately thought that they had found their sugar daddy. This made any relationship with women very complicated and women ran to Nathan for all the wrong reasons. True love was almost impossible to find, and trust was constantly a thing sought but never quite found.Riley is a Bahamian career-driven woman. Nathan and Riley meet on an airplane. She is a bank manager and she has many issues with love too. She needs to learn to trust before she could fall in love. Yet, Nathan doesn’t seem to be sending her the types of messages that she needs to make sure that she doesn’t get hurt. Yet, it seems that Nathan and Riley can have a great relationship. Can they overcome their issues so that they allow the relationship to blossom into something long-lasting?I love romantic fiction and read in this genre quite often. This book won’t disappoint if the reader is interested in this kind of story. In addition, it is a story that will capture the attention of every reader. And it will also encourage the reader to plan a trip to the Bahamas too. The Bahamas sound wonderful and a place that I will definitely put on my bucket list.

"I would recommend it for students because it demonstrates a way of thinking about medicine that is useful in paediatrics and in all other specialties. I would also recommend it to junior doctors working in an assessment unit or emergency department; a quick glance at an algorithm before seeing a patient is much faster than leafing through pages of text." Review

"This is a classic, must-have book for residents to general ophthalmologists. This edition provides valuable updates on current treatments as well as new images using the latest imaging techniques. You would be hard pressed to find a better book in this field." Reviewed by Doody's Review Service, Sep 2015

"For some healthcare professionals who are not ophthalmologists, diseases of the eyes can be a difficult to understand topic. Like any topic, once you master it then all of a sudden it seems a lot easier and makes much more sense. Certainly one way to master ophthalmology and get a better comprehension of the subject is to have access to this outstanding and excellent textbook. It is primarily aimed at specialist ophthalmologists both established and those in the training grades. However GPs with a special interest in ophthalmology or GPs who want an all-encompassing ophthalmology textbook may find that this fits the bill."  Reviewed by glycosmedia.com, Jul 2015

"I believe that Kanski’s Clinical Ophthalmology is one of the most popular general ophthalmology textbooks out there. Its popularity is justified - it covers the basic topics and provides just enough detail to be useful in most situations. Whether you’re learning ophthalmology for the first time, preparing for OKAP/board exams, or trying to remember some detail years down the road to help one of your patients, this text is a fantastic reference." 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Essential Text For Any Ophthalmologist By Kevin Lai, M.D. I confess, I'm a huge nerd when it comes to getting new books, especially textbooks. Though I own a print copy of the 7th Edition, I decided to go ahead and buy the 8th Edition of Kanski's Clinical Ophthalmology: A Systematic Approach. The 8th Edition does not list Dr. Jack Kanski as one of the primary editors/authors; instead, the task of updating this work has fallen to one of his colleagues, Dr. Brad Bowling, who did a superb job of maintaining Dr. Kanski's original vision while inserting his own style to present up-to-date evidence-based information about the essential topics of ophthalmology. Having personally relied heavily on the 7th edition during residency and through board review, I've been very eager to review this new text, which was released earlier this year.On initial glance, it's a great update to the already amazing work of the 7th edition. I don't know if it's an accurate claim, but it seems like there are even more images and figures than previous editions. Though it may not be as revolutionary of a difference between the 7th edition and its predecessors in format and look, the 8th edition is still a sleek upgrade.OrganizationThe textbook sections are identical to the 7th edition. The topics are arranged anatomically from anterior to posterior, as well as sections on ocular side effects of systemic medication and ocular trauma.Table of Contents (Chapter Titles): Eyelids Lacrimal Drainage System Orbit Dry Eye Conjunctiva Cornea Corneal and Refractive Surgery Episclera and Sclera Lens Glaucoma Uveitis Ocular Tumors Retinal Vascular Disease Acquired Macular Disorders Hereditary Fundus Dystrophies Retinal Detachment Vitreous Opacities Strabismus Neuro-Ophthalmology Ocular Side Effects of Systemic Medications TraumaSection OrganizationAs you would expect, each section typically starts with a brief overview of the anatomy, histology, physiology, and other general background information, before diving into the most common pathology. Each disease has a brief introduction, distinguishing features/differential diagnosis/workup section, and treatment section. Not too dissimilar from most ophthalmology textbooks. What makes Kanski so invaluable are the color photos, figures, and diagrams that rival any ophthalmology atlas. While there are typically detailed descriptors of each key finding, these high-resolution images will often clarify critical concepts. Each image has a short caption that succinctly explains the image. Most pages have anywhere from 1 to 6 images surrounding the text, which is an awesome reference for those visual learners.Presentation StyleKanski's text is classically presented in outline form with short sentence descriptors. In the 8th edition, Bowling preserved the essence of the text, but took away some of the hard-core ordering of the information. Bullet points are used more liberally, and the letter and numeric ordering (A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, etc.) has been scrapped. There are a few more paragraphs in the 8th edition, but before anyone panics, the general style of the book remains the same - most of the bullet points remain short and sweet, while the paragraphs are still fairly succinct.ContentIf you're looking for in-depth explanations diving into the minutiae of ophthalmic basic science, this is not the book for you. The text is brief in its descriptions but high-yield in its content. Its breadth of topics covers the essential topics in ophthalmology; its depth is sufficient for the budding ophthalmologist, or for someone doing some moderately-intense review.Chapter IntroductionsEach chapter begins with a brief introduction to the topic. Anatomy typically begins the section, followed by physiology and histology, terminology, evaluation techniques and interpretation, and basics of treatment. There is some variation in what is specifically highlighted in the introduction based on the nature of the subject material. Images in this section are typically of normal anatomy or histology. Often there are also diagrams illustrating physiology, pictures of instruments and diagnostic data, or tables comparing different clinical findings.DiseasesThe disease topics discuss the essential features of the disease: epidemiology, pathogenesis/pathophysiology, clinical features (symptoms/signs), differential diagnosis and workup, and treatment. All of the most common diseases and most of the diseases with notable appearances have images. There are many histopathology images, which are often directly compared with the corresponding clinical appearance. In some cases, photographs of surgical treatment are included.InsetsThroughout the book, there are some insets - these brightly-colored boxes are often descriptions of surgical or clinical techniques. To me, these are super useful. When I was first learning how to perform a laser trabeculoplasty, I referenced Kanski's step-by-step "how to perform an ALT" to make sure I didn't forget any steps. They're great for a quick refresher, or if you're trying to find a quick guide for various procedures and exam techniques.TablesWhile there are not a lot of tables, the few included tables achieve very directed goals - comparing two similar diseases, listing features of a disease, etc. Because textbooks can overwhelm the reader with too many tables and figures that most readers probably gloss over, I think the appropriate use and placement of tables can provide some relief in the middle of dense text. The Kanski text does a decent job of keeping the tables to a minimum. One critique I have of some of the tables is that some of the information presented in tabular format didn't stick out as very important to me, but perhaps they may be helpful to someone else.ImagesLike I mentioned above, the high-quality images and figures found in this textbook are very good. Since ophthalmology is such a highly visual specialty, it's crucial to see as many good representative images for pattern recognition as possible. For those people reviewing images in preparation for the oral board exam, these pictures can be very helpful.RatingsOrganization: 5 out of 5The book is organized in a very logical fashion. Each section is presented well, and the book reads from anterior to posterior (as many texts are organized).Readability: 4.5 out of 5Kanski's Clinical Ophthalmology has always been brief and to the point. This new iteration is no exception; there are no wasted words. The only reason why it didn't get a full 5 out of 5 was because stylistically not everyone learns well by bullet point.Comprehensiveness: 4 out of 5All of the major topics in ophthalmology are covered. However, not every single aspect of ophthalmology is covered (which makes sense in a single-volume text). Bonus points for discussing ophthalmic manifestations of systemic medications (which is a common screening we have to do in clinic).Citations: 0 out of 5There are no references to the source journals. While the information is up-to-date and evidence-based, citations are not included.Images: 5 out of 5I don't think I need to say anything more about this. ;-)Suitability for the Beginning Ophthalmologist: 5 out of 5For a single-volume textbook, I think Kanski's Clinical Ophthalmology satisfies the requirements for introducing someone to the field of ophthalmology: clinically-directed explanations, example images, details on the most common and essential topics in each sub-specialty, etc. I think this text is a must-have for every beginning ophthalmologist.Suitability for Written Board Review: 3.5 out of 5For some people, Kanski would be sufficient to review the "essentials" and pass the ABO written qualifying exam. However, there are definitely some knowledge gaps in the text that would require supplemental material (for example, clinical optics). For this reason, as a stand-alone text, I can't give it a rating any higher than a 3.5.Suitability for Oral Board Review: 4.5 out of 5Studying for the ABO oral exam has to be approached much differently than for the written exam. Because the oral exam aims to test how well you can articulate a structured approach to common clinical scenarios, it's important to have texts that are well-organized, full of images, and brief. While it's a bit lengthy for a quick review, it's still a great option for preparing for the oral exam.Portability: 5 out of 5*If you buy the book brand new, the 8th edition (U.S.) comes with a code that you can register with ExpertConsult.com to have unlimited online access to the text and images. There is a free app called Inkling that has partnered with Expert Consult to provide easy-to-navigate access to the book on your mobile devices. It's a great bonus feature. With that access, you can copy/download the images into educational presentations and for offline viewing. The text is fully searchable, which makes it much easier to hone in on the topics you want to learn. The textbook itself is a fairly standard size (1.8 x 8.8 x 11 inches, 6.7 pounds), but is still bulky enough that you may not want to lug the physical book around on your clinical rotations. Although it might not be the most ideal quick-reference book in the clinic, it would be worth taking with you for more in-depth study sessions.*The reason for the asterisk is that the book's physical portability would be rated much lower, but because there is high-quality online access for those who purchase the book new, the text can be very portable.Cost: $$$ $ = $0.00-$50.00 $$ = $50.00-$150.00 $$$ = $150.00-$250.00 $$$$ = $250.00-$350.00 $$$$$ = $350.00 or moreThe listed retail price for the book is $259.99, which seems to me like a pretty fair price for a comprehensive ophthalmology textbook. Of course, if you shop around online, there are always different deals/discounts available. I think Elsevier, the publisher, typically runs 20-30% discounts on their textbooks if you purchase directly from them. Amazon has similar discounts and may offer better deals through their Marketplace. If you're not hung up on getting a brand new book so that you can gain online access, purchasing the book used may be a more affordable solution as well.I ended up finding the book at an incredible deal on Amazon - $155.47 (a 59.8% discount)! Unfortunately, since I bought the book the price has risen to $180.56 (still a 31% discount), but it makes me that much happier I bought the book when I did.Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5I believe that Kanski's Clinical Ophthalmology is one of the most popular general ophthalmology textbooks out there. Its popularity is justified - it covers the basic topics and provides just enough detail to be useful in most situations. Whether you're learning ophthalmology for the first time, preparing for OKAP/board exams, or trying to remember some detail years down the road to help one of your patients, this text is a fantastic reference.I bought the 7th edition during my 2nd year of residency. Up until then, I had solely been using the AAO's Basic and Clinical Science Course to study. While certain topics lack the depth or breadth of the BCSC, there were some aspects of clinical disease that Kanski was able to explain much better, such as the basics of diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Since I bought the book, I used the 7th edition to study for OKAP my last year of residency, for the written board exam, and for the oral board exam. Upon first glance, it doesn't look like there is much change to the actual content, but I look forward to looking through the new layout and using it as a reference.- Kevin Lai, M.D.Neuro-OphthalmologistFounder and Contributing Editor, OphthalmologyReview.org

The original account of the 1992 bombshell news story that revealed reports of werewolf-like creatures in southeast Wisconsin.

The small town of Elkhorn, Wisconsin made national headlines in the early 1990s with reports of a strange, hairy, wolf-headed creature that walked upright and seemed unafraid of man as it stalked the cornfields just outside of town. Journalist Linda Godfrey dubbed the canid sensation “The Beast of Bray Road” after the location of the first reported sightings. Two decades and hundreds of nationwide sightings of similar creatures later, no one has ever proven whether the beast is a flesh-and-blood canine or will-o-the-wisp, demon dog, or a magical werewolf. But the author provides plenty to chew on, with sightings of related creatures, Native American connections, historic lore and a keen-eyed look at possible explanations. Once fully digested, this book just may induce readers everywhere to keep a more careful eye out as they travel lonely country roads after dark.

Hancock In 1941 screenwriter Curt Siodmak wrote a screenplay for Universal Pictures, telling a tale about a nice young man named Lawrence "Larry" Talbot, who came home to Llanwelly Village in Wales from school in America, only to discover he'd been better off staying "across the pond". Run-ins with Gypsies (especially with one named Bela...as in Lugosi) left him with a very unwanted physiological affliction. An "ancient gypsy rhyme" (composed very un-anciently by writer Siodmak) bespoke Talbot's affliction: "Even a man who is pure at heart, and says his prayers by night...may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms...and the moon is full and bright." So began the unfortunate "career' of The Wolfman, one of the most popular of all supernatural cultural icons, a man-monster rooted in the ancient traditions of the werewolf, which reach back AT LEAST as far as Roman times, and no doubt beyond. Talbot has never been alone in his predicament. There have been untold numbers of both cinematic, literary, television, and, indeed, even radio werewolves. The lycanthropy crowd is ever with us in the media and in good yarns spun around the campfire. But is that all there is to it? History says no. The belief is strong is Europe and North America and many anecdotal accounts present themselves as authentic tales of strange doings by creatures who may or may not be shapeshifting humans. The Indians of the southwest believe in "skinwalkers". The French Canadians of Quebec and the Cajuns of Louisiana don't always smirk at stories of "loup garou". The belief also extends itself to the workings of the "bokors", the black magic sorcerors of Haiti. And it should be noted that in the real-world literature of the werewolf, the notion that the depredations of such a creature are tied to a full moon is RARE. The strongest traditions involve Satanism and black magic and address themselves to men and women who turn themselves into beasts AT WILL, when they WANT to. They are NOT "moonbound" by a curse. THIS notion (the involuntary full moon transformation triggered by a curse or bite) is a product of SIODMAK and is NOT tied strongly to the historical tradition at all. This fact tends to make Wisconsin's Bray Road Beast even more interesting. IT is not seemingly tied to a full moon cycle either. It does its thing "whenever". That small fact may render a certain legitimacy in the accounts. Your typical doofus prankster is not going to be that well versed in the "true" history of lycanthropy and most likely would try to time his prank-playing TO the full moon cycle. In "The Beast of Bray Road" Linda Godfrey has done an excellent job of presenting the historical overview of these odd happenings around Elkhorn and Delavan, Wisconsin. She has done the reporters' base line job of finding out who-what-when-where-and-how in very capable fashion. She also doesn't let her imagination...OR her skepticism...run away with her. She stays practical and contemplative and analytically perceptive the whole way through. And she never loses her witty sense of humour. She keeps her head on straight and produces a very, very good and readable book on a very, very strange subject. And what do we find out from Ms. Godfrey? That a lot of people(feet-on-the-ground people, not Kooks) over quite some time, have seen a very strange "something" in the fields and forests of rural and semi-rural Wisconsin. It is something that stands about 5 to 5 1/2 feet tall, has a head with the general configuration of a wolf, or dog, or coyote, a broad shouldered, heavy-muscled upper torso, well muscled arms like a body builder's, human-like hands with claws on them, powerful thighs tapering down into skinny "shins" and ankles. This description alone (referencing "arms" and "legs" separately) suggests something bipedal, though the creature often does go to all fours). Accounts also say the back legs look "funny", the implication being that they are jointed animal fashion("crooked as a dog's hind leg" as the saying goes). But the "arms" are not? Odd. The thing is often seen by a roadside, seemingly eating road kill, which it holds(while squatting) in its "hands"(?) with the "palms"(?) turned face up. Most peculiar. Godfrey takes the reader through possible Satanic associations, cryptozoological connections ( a creature the Ioway Indians called a "shunka-warak'in"),mysterious animal mutilations, and a chilling incident from the 1930s when a nightwatchman encountered a strangely similar creature that snarled out the word "Gaddarah" at him and then turned and walked away with a sneer when the man began praying to God for deliverance. This book is well worth having, both to read for information and pondering, or for good old-fashioned cheap thrills. If you want to sit in front of the fire on a dark night and scare the bejeebies out of yourself, don't miss it. Will it make you want to jump up and book immediate fare to Elkhorn or Delavan, Wisconsin? Well, I can't guarantee THAT!!!!

I have read 'scary' books before that, well, really weren't all that great, so when I first saw this book at a local bookshop, I thought "This looks cool", but was skeptical. So while I was beginning to read it while sipping coffee, I realized I had to read the whole thing! So now I just finished the whole book (all 170 pages not including the intros, bibliography, and map of sightings), so now comes the review!First of all, it is true that Linda has a light and breezy way of writing, and I like that fact, because instead of basic, dry facts, etc, you get a story told by a really talented storyteller!Secondly, there really is no doubt that certain people haven't read the entire book, because these people mention only a couple of things that make this book special and worthwhile, and they say it was a couple hours worth of reading. YES there was an 'almost' movie made, but that's not the point of the book, is it? Yes, there was also a LOT of media coverage. But there were a TON of sightings of this creature mentioned in the book (and probably a LOT MORE not mentioned as well as I'm now awaiting the next follow-up book. And if one does a search in google.com for the "Beast of Bray Road", this person will see that there have been even more recent sightings following the release of this book). Some of these stories are second-hand, but most are first-hand accounts which Linda strived to get from the witnesses themselves! Also, Linda has many possible theories and histories behind those theories as to figuring out what the heck this creature could be, as well as a lovely summary in the end of the book! My favorite to read about were the 'wildman' theories, but the most mystifying theories were about the creature's related cousin from Michigan, the Dogman.Anyways, I'm a pretty fast reader, and this book took me a couple of days to finish. It WAS an easy read, because Linda's style of writing is like having your own personal storyteller in the palm of your hands. You aren't just sitting there trying to read the cold facts, rather you are sitting there reading the facts in an entertaining way! The hardest part however about reading this book is trying to shake that eerie feeling after reading some of the accounts with the creature, so this book may not be appropriate for those under 13.And speaking of which, "an average, general 'scary' reader"? :-O No way! The book mentions how people have been deeply shaken by the sight of the creature as I am deeply shaken just by reading about it! I know how an average, general 'scary' reader goes (and there's tons of them out there), but this by far is NOT one of them! I didn't think at first $16.95 was worth it, but it was more than worth it, and I'm saving up for the next release! This has been a DJ JyMe review.---Footnote: I think it's unbelievably cool that the author has written in her own review space! :-) It goes to show that she is a very down-to-Earth person, and I really dig that.

Well-researched Book with Extensive Source-citing By Curt Rowlett An exciting and spooky account of the werewolf-type creature that is alleged to be afoot in rural Wisconsin. As a reporter for a small weekly Wisconsin newspaper , the author of this book personally interviewed eye witnesses who described the Bray Road Beast as a bipedal, wolf-like creature with a huge chest, long claws and pointed ears.Godfrey also presents a list of historical sightings of a similar creature in Wisconsin dating back to the early 1930's, as well as an exploration of the similarities to the sightings of the "dogman" creature in neighboring Michigan. This is a well-researched book with extensive source-citing, a map of the major sightings and a chronology of events.

Kirkus Review By Kirkus Review Sherlock's debut short story collection examines characters who push forward, no matter how strongly memory holdsthem back.In these tales, a man suffering from a brain trauma distances himself from his sister and navigates his isolation in a worldthat seems to have left him behind; a retiree turns to sculpture for self-expression, much to the chagrin of his housingcommunity and at the expense of a friendship; and a middle-aged man accompanies his parents on a cruise, trying to cutthe cord, with the probable breakup of his marriage hovering in the background. Many of these tales refreshingly putmiddle-aged characters front and center, whether it's an heiress conned by her Irish cousin, or a wife discovering that herhusband has a second family and that her own life is a sham. There are nods to other works of literature in each of thesestories, including a Mark Twain enthusiast, a Harriet Beecher Stowe tour, along with burgeoning authors, Englishprofessors, and Shakespearean quotes. These touches could have seemed too self-aware, but instead they're kindreminders that literature shows us how to live. Profound wisdom bookends these stories, although some are draggeddown by too many needless details and back story that take away from the depth of emotion. One of Sherlock'sstrengths, however, is believable, rich dialogue. This is an author who knows her characters well, whether they're minoror major, and who has shaped their individual voices. Nowhere is this command of character more pronounced than inthe title story, which may also be the one with the most depth. It explores a relationship between a mother and herdaughter who has Alzheimer's--a role reversal that's beautiful and saddening. Their mental estrangement between isonly reconciled with music, even if those moments of calm are fleeting. An often beautiful and insightful set of stories about people both lonely and in love.

By Felicity Harley Eliza Sherlock’s intriguing book of short stories begins its journey through the complexities of human nature with Top Man. In this heartbreaking but ultimately fulfilling tale, brain-injured Martin finds that the loneliness he associates with being on the outside looking in, is what many of us experience, and realizes that just like everyone else he knows, he seeks to be loved and valued for who he is. As the author tells us “this must be borne as all things you tell yourself you cannot change must be.”Top Man is followed by Fowler’s Folly whose underlying theme centers on the ups and downs of friendship, both between husband and wife, and friend and friend. This second story sets the tone for many of the stories that proceed it, which allow the author to brilliantly and carefully, like a surgeon wielding a sharp knife, expose so many of the fine cracks that exist in our lives. At Sea chronicles the break up of a marriage as a husband on a cruise with his parents is finally willing to admit that his marriage is a failure, “though their years together were irrecoverable, an uncharted future terrified him. How he had fooled himself about who needed who?”Daisy Gets Her Garden about a young woman who is determined to find herself, told in a tentative voice, is an exquisitely rendered story that cleanses the palette. Even though it is full of surprises, the author’s ending image of a wind-filled garden, leaves us of full of hope and tenderness for its young heroine.Nick of The True City definitely belongs to “those who tear down because they have nothing to give.” A would be writer he finds himself in New York working as a waiter and imagining he’s better than everyone else. Of course he’s nothing of the kind, and his relentless anger at himself comes out in all kinds of inexplicably hostile ways. It’s a unique character study of an aimless young man whom I found I disliked, but about whom I couldn’t stop reading.Good Girl is a story about an unfaithful husband and a wife who stands up to him, while acknowledging that she still needs the physical closeness that kept their marriage together. This story provides an interesting insight into how sexual attraction doesn’t just die when there’s a betrayal. “You can’t outsmart hurt, you simply can’t. It struck her now that nothing lasts…..” In this story and several others, such as Sin, the author sympathetically examines how intense sexual relationships can bring both greater intimacy but also greater loneliness and betrayal.Well beyond hope is a sobering parable about honesty with a lot of twists and turns, but in the end we are happy the protagonist gets what is coming to him.The tour de force of the whole book however, has been saved for last in the title story, Rapture. It’s a heartbreaking examination of a mother’s enduring love for her daughter, and her final acceptance of the fact that only by forgiving herself and with the support of others, can she make a difference to a young life that has been crushed by an incurable disease. This disturbing but ultimately brilliant and satisfying book leaves us with a better understanding of, and belief in the endurance of the human spirit.

The prose sparkles and goes deep to the core of the matter. The characters feel known by the end of each story as the truth of the matter—be it between a couple, siblings, lovers, or friends—emerges. Each story stands alone and will move you and stay with you. Whether it’s illness, betrayal, or introspection, each character moves from Point A to Point B with the reader in tow, observing and feeling—and those feelings can flip in a flick of the page. You think you know something but then another facet is revealed. I particularly loved Good Girl, a story of Amelia’s evolution from a woman who needs to suppress her true nature for fear of alienating those around her to a woman who is someone, who knows what she needs and wants and says so. It was lovely with poetic turns of phrase and revelation throughout. (Rapture, the title story, is also particularly beautiful.) If you love the hard hit of short stories that cut to the bone and reveal, you will love these.
