Pepper Ryan grew up the troublesome, spoiled child of a rock god. With her less-than-stellar parentage, and the bipolar disorder that has plagued her existence, to say this little firecracker is a handful would be the understatement of the century. Sammy Belle spent more than half his life saving Pepper. He’d been her strength, her sanity, and the protective brotherly figure she never wanted to have. They were never meant to be together. They gave in anyway. And just when Sammy thought he had everything he wanted, Pepper ran. Now twenty-three, Pepper returns to Sugartown, a failed tattoo artist with one too many screws loose who’s down on her luck, wielding an ice cream van as beaten up as her heart. Sugartown’s most coveted bachelor has always been content with the quiet life he leads until Pepper, the hellion from his past, returns to test his strength, his patience, and perhaps even his sanity. But two can play at that game, and Pepper is about to learn that Sam can give as good as he gets. Can this good country boy survive Pepper’s cruel city world, or will the whole thing be put down to a bout of temporary insanity? One thing is for certain: He’s crazy about her. She’s just crazy. Warning: Intended for an 18+ audience. Contains sexual content, oodles of profanity, a firefighter so hot you may need a very cold shower, and one pink-haired crazy Harajuku girl. May also contain traces of nuts. Some scenes within this book may be a trigger for certain readers.

By Kawehi's Book Blog (Pepper)"I can’t promise I’m not going to make you crazy."--"Then we’ll be crazy together."(Sammy)Normally, I have to take a breather to gather up my thoughts and write up a review for a book, and Now Leaving Sugartown was no different. Only, it was.Author Carmen Jenner, definitely ups the “crazy” to her patented Sugartown series and makes you wonder what she's going to come up with next! I mean, if you thought Holly was a hell raising firecracker, then just wait till you meet Pepper! *I laughed so hard at that scene with Pepper, Sammy, and that ice cream truck! Haha*'''''''Now many years post Greetings From Sugartown..Sammy Belle “Sam” and Pepper Ryan, are all grown up, and have always shared a special bond that many would look upon as brother/sister but it’s not. It’s MUCH MORE than that.As many of you Sugartownies remember, Sammy is the little brother of Ana (“Ana Banana”) and Pepper is the daughter of Holly and ex-flame, rocker Cooper.Growing up together, they’ve always been each other’s rock and constant shelter from the rain. But as feelings and new awareness’ began to grow, and the two feel their relationship developing into something more-- so do prejudices, insecurities, and tensions. Now, fast forward five years later…And with her aspiring tattoo career flushed down the drain and her love life in tatters, Pepper returns to Sugartown, to plan out her next move and to face the boy who’s heart she shattered after one fateful encounter. Will a second chance at love, be the charm? What will happen when time runs short, and what she thought she could protect and shield Sammy from, turns to be ultimately her worst enemy?"Quit f*#king running, Pepper…that’s all you need to do—just quit running."-"No, we’re not. I ran five years ago because I knew I couldn’t be what you needed. I wanted you to be happy, and I knew I couldn’t give you that. Not in the long run. "Can Sugartown's most notorious bachelor convince the one that got away to stay and take a chance on him?... On each other?"I want you, Pepper. I’ve never wanted anyone else."..."Together we were motherf*#king fireworks."Can he [Sammy] prove to Pepper that he can be the pillar of salvation, security, and the hope she needs to carry her on through the darkness and save her from her own horrid destruction? And Pepper. Will Pepper be able to erase scars of the past, while salvaging and fighting for a future with Sammy? Will she be able to muster up the courage and admit that she needs help and find redemption in herself? Are these two polar opposites truly meant for one other? Or will history repeat itself and lead to utter heartbreak and devastation?"Pepper, if it’s one thing life with you has taught me, is that it’s always messy.""If you leave me, I’m coming with you. You can run as far and as fast as you want, but I’ll be right behind you. I’ll be right there."Or are some things far beyond you to fix?"I hated that I wasn’t enough to save her from herself. That I couldn’t be the one to fix her. But I hate the thought of losing her more."'''''''#Get ready to be on the edge of your own sanity ladies and gents! The “Sugar babies” are sure about to rock and detonate your kindles!!P.S:- Who's that beautiful girl model on the book cover?! She's sooo gorgeous!

I’ve been reading it from the very beginning and knowing there won’t be any more books makes me incredibly sad. Carmen really delivered with this final book and it is probably my favorite of the series and I didn’t think anything would surpass Holly and Jackson for me.What I loved most about this book is how it blended fun and feels together perfectly. The book is so much fun and Pepper and Sammy together are a riot. But the book still maintained a serious tone and had a deep storyline. I just loved that balance and I thought Carmen handled it really well. At times it read like a lighthearted fun read, but then at other times my heart was breaking and being ripped from my chest.Pepper broke my heart. This girl has not had an easy life and she is constantly battling her demons. I wish she could see just how awesome she truly is. But Pepper is a great girl and is a riot. She is unpredictable and fun and I loved her way with words.Sammy has grown up to be such a wonderful man and I fell in love with him. He is such a great guy and he clearly loves Pepper with everything he has. It was so tough watching him try to keep himself from falling for Pepper once again and keep himself from getting hurt.As usual, Carmen delivers the sexy times. Pepper and Sammy’s chemistry was off the charts and they were so great together. They were so sweet together but also downright sexy. It was a fantastic mix.I also loved catching up with some of my favorite characters again. Elijah and Jackson had me cracking up with their overprotective ways and Holly is still freakin awesome. I’m going to miss these characters so damn much. All in all, Now Leaving Sugartown was the perfect way to wrap up this series. Carmen’s writing continues to get better and better and I can’t wait to see what other books she has in store.

By Brie, Cheeky Chicks Blogger They say all good things must come to an end, well eventually and even though I knew this was the last hurrah in Sugartown, nothing could prepare me for the impending journey that Carmen Jenner took me on.Little Sammie Belle, is definitely not little anymore... anywhere *blushes* I thought I loved Elijah, I thought I was infatuated with Jackson, but let me tell you Fireman Sam has seduced my heart. Our little Sugartown cutie with the potty mouth is 100% ALL MALE, a Viking to be exact and has definitely grown up into a fine specimen. But what really makes his character, is that he feels. He is a man that cares no matter the circumstances. A man who loves relentlessly.Unyielding.Unwavering.His love for Pepper Ryan- Harris- Rowe is undeniable and anchored in the depths of his soul. She is love in his eyes and he is her very reason to breath.Pepper. Little...Let me just say I am in love, utterly consumed, completely captivated by and with this character. Her journey is just as beautiful as it is breathtaking. Just as powerful as it is meaningful. Her personality, no matter how crazy and wild it is; is simply intoxicating. She is so much of her mom with her lewd comments, but worse in a way. Imagine Holly times ten and we get Pepper. From her pink hair, inked body to the brokenness that clouds her soul; I am enamored. At her weakest she is strong; at every breaking point, she is an unmovable mountain.Together, their chemistry is fiery as they embark on this emotional roller coaster of a relationship. Did I laugh? Um, yes until my cheeks hurt. Did I lay down in my bed and cry into my pillow for the pain that these two characters experienced? I did, and as I write this review now tears are staining my cheeks. To say I cried would be an understatement. I wept. My heart shattered as my soul dissolved into a million tiny tears. Now Leaving Sugartown broke me in every way possible. I don't think I have ever been so crushed in my life. This book holds a message, one that will touch every part of you. It's about survival. It's an internal war− battling mental illnesses, fighting your personal perception, going up against yourself. Carmen Jenner not only educates us, but she gives us a deeper understanding. Her writing is effortlessly flawless and her words touched me in a way that I felt them every where. In me. On me. Flowing through me as she healed me of my own insecurities. This story has become a part of me. I recommend this book, a million times over. It will force you to really see yourself, the person hiding within.Final Thoughts: I color.

From the Introduction: Many Christians consider the Bible to be “the word of God” and to tell the story of Jesus; however, in this book, we will take a closer look at the “story” contained in the gospels. There have been many productions telling the “story” of Jesus’ life, which makes it seem like there is a coherent story of Jesus’ life in the Bible. Such things as the three wise men, the birth in the manger, turning water into wine all seem to be integral aspects in the “story” of Jesus’ life, but we will see that these are each only included in one gospel. We will see throughout this book that there is no single narrative in the Gospels and that the four gospels tell different stories with inconsistencies that are irreconcilable. In fact each gospel writer had their own message that they wanted to convey to readers, which could be the cause of some inconsistencies. Mark is the oldest of the four gospels and most scholars agree that Matthew and Luke both used Mark as a major source, which is why many of the stories between the three show verbatim agreement. But Matthew and Luke also had their own agendas, so they changed passages from Mark’s gospel or added passages to it in order to convey a different message and set of beliefs, which we will see throughout this book. And we will also examine whether the cruel and spiteful God of the Old Testament has been replaced by a God of love or if this is just what Christians wish happened in their Bible.

It is interesting that he points out that even though Matthew and Luke used Mark as a source, their books differ from Mark’s in many respects. It is also interesting to note that the “Christmas story” that many churches perform contains elements that are contradict in one or more of the gospels. Like the manger scene. That’s only in one gospel and another gospel says Jesus was born in his parents’ house. And the gospels can’t even agree on the time of death. It is quite amazing how much pastors hide the truth.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It’s kind of amazing how different the Gospels actually are and Drake does ... By Christopher This is an interesting comparison of the Gospels. Drake dissects them and shows exactly how they contradict each other and tell completely different stories at times. These are not interpretations, but exactly what the bible says. It’s kind of amazing how different the Gospels actually are and Drake does a good job comparing and contrasting them. The book is very concise and to the point and even humorous at times. Definitely a must read for anyone who has wondered about the historicity of Jesus.

Well done By Kindle Customer I was quite impressed with the work that went into putting all this material together, I also enjoyed the author's sense of humor. I have always had my doubts about much of the material in the Bible, and after reading this book, now I am convinced that a lot of what it contains is not historical but fictional.

We present in these pages an outline, which may at least serve to suggest the way to a greater spiritual power for many of us. Or, as the title intimates, each major idea may be a “path” leading to a life of abundant grace promised in the Sacred Word. Let us remember that a path is merely a way toward something; it can never be the thing itself. A knowledge of the truth is not enough; the truth must be followed if we would realize in actual experience the blessedness which is here described.

I have been hearing about diffusers, aromatherapy and different benefits for quite awhile. I was totally ignorant on the oils until I read this book. It is short, concise, easy to understand and well written. I really appreciated the portion on the benefits of each oil. It also includes where to buy and how to store the oils. One that really surprised me was the cinnamon. Who knew? With mosquito season right around the corner, am off to get some...All in all, a fascinating book for me and a great introduction. I just scanned through the author's page and the one on Alzheimer's caught my attention. Will order that one next. Most highly recommended.

By Lavender Lady This book is a lot better than some of the other kindle books I've read on essential oils, which frankly advise dangerous practices. This one shows proper safety, stresses essential oil dilution, and has a few recipes in the back. Nice read!

A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice"Roger Clarke tells this [the story that inspired Henry James' The Turn of the Screw] and many other gloriously weird stories with real verve, and also a kind of narrative authority that tends to constrain the skeptical voice within… [an] erudite and richly entertaining book." ―New York Times Book Review"Is there anybody out there?" No matter how rationally we order our lives, few of us are completely immune to the suggestion of the uncanny and the fear of the dark. What explains sightings of ghosts? Why do they fascinate us? What exactly do those who have been haunted see? What did they believe? And what proof is there?

Taking us through the key hauntings that have obsessed the world, from the true events that inspired Henry James's classic The Turn of the Screw right up to the present day, Roger Clarke unfolds a story of class conflict, charlatans, and true believers. The cast list includes royalty and prime ministers, Samuel Johnson, John Wesley, Harry Houdini, and Adolf Hitler. The chapters cover everything from religious beliefs to modern developments in neuroscience, the medicine of ghosts, and the technology of ghosthunting. There are haunted WWI submarines, houses so blighted by phantoms they are demolished, a seventeenth-century Ghost Hunter General, and the emergence of the Victorian flash mob, where hundreds would stand outside rumored sites all night waiting to catch sight of a dead face at a window.

Written as grippingly as the best ghost fiction, A Natural History of Ghosts takes us on an unforgettable hunt through the most haunted places of the last five hundred years and our longing to believe.

Ghosts: A Natural History: 500 Years of Searching for Proof, by Roger Clarke

Review

“Roger Clarke tells this [the story that inspired Henry James' The Turn of the Screw] and many other gloriously weird stories with real verve, and also a kind of narrative authority that tends to constrain the skeptical voice within… [an] erudite and richly entertaining book.” ―New York Times Book Review

“Ghost-hunting gets a gentlemanly makeover in this meticulous history of hauntings. Clarke indulges his lifelong interest in the paranormal in this well-documented look at ghost stories and the people who have told them throughout history… He covers everything in loving detail… Clarke's discussions of geography also lend realism...a useful index, a chronology and a reference list ...will serve other paranormal researchers well. Excerpts from letters, illustrations of experiments and many complex family trees ground in reality what could be dismissed as fantasy.” ―Kirkus

“Beautifully written ... lithe, complicated and hugely rewarding.” ―Sunday Times

“A gripping history that traces the scientific and social aspects of ghostly sightings. . . . [A] voyage through the half-lit world of lost souls ... tales told with ghoulish relish” ―Telegraph

“Compelling ... Research into the paranormal necessarily involves a fair degree of debunking, and Clarke is careful to be skeptical. The narrative of ghost-hunting is simultaneously a history and exposure of fraud and popular delusion ... [yet] Clarke retains a boyish and ... well-informed enthusiasm for his subject.” ―Independent

“Splendid ... compelling ... Clarke manages to give goose-flesh and a giggle while informing the reader - an enviable feat.” ―Scotsman

“Compelling ... Research into the paranormal necessarily involves a fair degree of debunking, and Clarke is careful to be sceptical. The narrative of ghost-hunting is simultaneously a history and exposure of fraud and popular delusion ... “A fascinating social history ... exceptionally well written and researched.” ―Starburst Magazine

“Outstanding ... Clarke's dissection of the shocks, sadnesses and sexiness of the seance tables from the late Victorian era is brilliantly done ... The book is deeply enjoyable, hugely informative and at times distinctly unsettling” ―Shade Point

“Lively and absorbing ... [Clarke] has proven himself an ideal guide to this troubled and disorderly realm.” ―Literary Review

About the Author ROGER CLARKE is best known as a film-writer for the Independent newspaper and more recently Sight & Sound. Inspired by a childhood spent in two haunted houses, Roger Clarke has spent much of his life trying to see a ghost. He was the youngest person ever to join the Society for Psychical Research in the 1980s and was getting his ghost stories published by The Pan & Fontana series of horror books at just 15, when Roald Dahl asked his agent to take him on as a client.

The ghost of Achilles wails to Ulysses, "I would rather be a paid servant in a poor man's house and be above ground, than king of kings among the dead." Nowadays even our computers' spellcheckers may be haunted, at least according to a footnote within _A Natural History of Ghosts: 500 Years of Hunting for Proof_ (Particular Books) by columnist Roger Clarke, who grew up in a haunted house and was the youngest person ever to be invited to join the British Society for Psychical Research. In 1998, the SPR investigated the case of a report being typed about a particular ghost named Prudentia, and the spellchecker highlighted the name and suggested that "dead," "buried," and "cellar" be considered for alternatives. Ghosts, you see, go through their fashions as much as do we living. This ought to tell us more about people than about ghosts, and Clarke's book is a wonderful entertainment, with plenty of spooky stories, frauds, pranks, impossibilities, and seemingly inexplicable events. Clarke is obviously fascinated with his subject, and is able to convey the fascination. He has a good reporter's distance on the stories he covers here, with an appropriate skepticism that makes the tales more, not less, fun. Before investigating what ghosts do, it might be best to consider the big question: Do ghosts exist? You won't get an answer here because Clarke is dismissive of the question, one that he says belongs in a London of the nineteenth century. "In a basic sense," he writes, "ghosts exist because people constantly report that they see them. This is not a book about whether ghosts exist or not. This is a book about what we see when we see a ghost, and the stories that we tell each other about them." We use ghosts for sensation, or ancestor worship, or even to make moral tales. The most famous ghost story of all is Dickens's _A Christmas Carol_, but Clarke points attention to a letter from Pliny featuring an Athenian ghost in chains and shackles like Marley. This ghost did not appear to make any observer less misanthropic, though, but came with the classic ghost duty to inform the living that his body was buried in the cellar, and needed a proper burial, after which the ghost came no more. The most famous of the ghost stories told here is that of the Cock Lane Ghost, referenced plenty of times by Dickens and even by Melville in _Moby Dick_; Hogarth included a reference in his picture "Credulity, Superstition, and Fanaticism: a Medley." Part of the reason for its fame is that Samuel Johnson himself was on a committee to investigate the ghost, and though the committee spotted the hoax, Clarke says that Johnson's reputation suffered, as he was criticized for taking the open-minded position beforehand that the ghost might exist. The story is fascinating in many ways. It has a strong religious connection, with the greatest booster of the ghost-as-fact being the Reverend John Moore, a Methodist at a time when the church (based on the proclivities of its founder, John Wesley, who grew up in a haunted house) accepted such supernatural occurrences as fully factual. The ghost, manifested by knocks and noises, and able to answer questions by giving appropriate taps, was able to tap out an accusation of murder against her husband. But the ghost was no such thing; like many such sensational disturbances even to our own time, the noises and other manifestations were the stunts of an adolescent daughter. Her father took part in the prank as a practical joke, but then Rev. Moore latched on, and thinking that any minister who proved beyond doubt that the dead were fooling around with the living would be one of the All-Stars of Methodism, offered the father a stipend and other support. Moore arranged press releases (in what Clarke says was the first media circus ever) and people paid to come in and hear the ghost tapping away. When the dismissive report of Dr. Johnson's committee came out, the father accused the committee of getting its result by stealing the body of the "murdered" wife, whereupon there was an exhumation. The hoax came crashing down, and the husband sued for damages, which Rev. Moore and others had to pay. A hundred years later, though, street vendors were still selling pamphlets about the haunting, and locals continued to believe it had been genuine; ghosts do not die of disproof. The other famous haunting covered here is more recent, one that continued into the twentieth century: Borley Rectory, often called "the most haunted house in England." One of the reasons it was called that is that Harry Price, an investigator within Clarke's Society for Psychical Research, made it so. Price was sometimes a diligent and serious investigator, and sometimes a promoter of belief in the supernatural beyond what the evidence showed. He was not above faking evidence, and once said, "People don't want the debunk, they want the bunk." The rectory at Borley had cold spots, mysterious appearances of handwriting, thrown stones, footsteps, a ghost of a nun, and much more. Price himself listed two thousand paranormal events. The hauntings, however, are made less believable by the huge number of unreliable witnesses, many of whom changed stories or recanted. Even though Price himself took a lease out on the crumbling rectory, it was an environment that could not be made secure from passers-by, and his troop of observers proved unreliable. A SPR report on Price's report found that supposedly ghostly events were due to fraud and natural causes. With ghosts taking on the fashions of their times, it is appropriate to consider their clothes. Ghosts were sometimes presumed to show up in the sorts of clothes they might have worn before they became ghosts. At other times ghosts were beheld in that which they wore to the grave, which for most people in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was a mere winding sheet (most people at the time didn't get coffins). Ghosts' garments were a serious topic of consideration dating back even to Thomas Hobbes, who raised the question in The Leviathan in 1651. A rationalist attack on supernatural beliefs in 1762 stated that ghosts surely would be naked, for they needed no clothes to keep warm. A commentator in 1862 mused that clothes themselves had ghosts, and that this was the explanation for "all the socks that never came home in the wash." Clarke mentions but does not quote Ambrose Bierce, who insisted that one could not believe in a ghost who was not naked. I can't help it; I will include Bierce's delicious words here, from _The Devil's Dictionary_: "A ghost never comes naked: he appears either in a winding-sheet or 'in his habit as he lived.' To believe in him, then, is to believe that not only have the dead the power to make themselves visible after there is nothing left of them, but that the same power inheres in textile fabrics. Supposing the products of the loom to have this ability, what object would they have in exercising it? And why does not the apparition of a suit of clothes sometimes walk abroad without a ghost in it?"One of the ways people used to celebrate ghosts was by what we would call now "flash mobs." In 1868, for instance, a body was fished out of the Thames, and before an inquest could be held, rumors spread that the body was walking all around the churchyard at night. "In consequence, an estimated two thousand people congregated nightly outside. Efforts by the vicar and parish officials to disperse the crowd were entirely in vain; as the police arrived, one James Jones, aged nineteen, climbed up onto the railings and shouted at the murmuring, agitated crowd, 'Don't go - there it is again - there's the ghost!' He was promptly arrested." The police hated dealing with the mobs, which could indeed get dangerous. In 1803, groups of young men gathered in a part of London to show how they had no fear of the ghosts reported to walk therein. Thomas Milward was a bricklayer, who wore his trade's traditional white trousers, apron, and waistcoat, and was accosted with a shout of "There goes the ghost!" one night. He refused to take precautions to keep from being mistaken for a spectre, and was eventually shot dead by someone who made the mistake. Clarke examines the haunting of Hinton Ampner, which may have inspired Henry James's story _The Turn of the Screw_, the Victorian craze for seances, the Angel of Mons that was (never) seen by soldiers in World War I, and the class-consciousness of ghosts (with headless Anne Boleyn haunting stately homes and highwayman Dick Turpin sticking to pubs). He has comments on the gadgetry now trained on catching ghosts, and on the television shows that promote such technology. Suffice it to say that the new ways of hunting for ghosts have failed to clear up conclusively even their existence. They have infested us living people for millennia, and my guess is that we have cleared up their mysteries just as much as we ever have or ever will.

Cofield The title of this book is somewhat misleading, in that there is nothing like a clear narrative or an organized history to be found within its pages. Such is to be expected when "proof" of something unprovable like the supernatural is sought, of course, and possible readers should not rule it out on that account. This book is more of an episodic history of various "real life" ghosts, some of which are more interesting to read about than others.Roger Clarke is a film writer and reviewer who has spent much of his life being fascinated by the supernatural. With that experience it is disappointing that so many of his stories here tend to be rambling and often repetitive, poorly organized and with an emphasis on sensation (which of course is par for the course when writing about ghosts and similar phenomena). I did enjoy the chapters that deal with nineteenth century mediums and their various deceptions, and the ones that covered Hinton Ampner, Epworth Priory, Borley Rectory, and other notorious haunted houses were interesting as well. I'm quite fond of M.R. James' ghost stories, and I appreciated Clarke's efforts to identify some of the actual houses and other sites which James used for his settings.A book which covers some of the same ground as Clarke on nineteenth century "ghost hunting" and mediums is Deborah Blum's Ghost Hunters: William James And The Search For Scientific Proof Of Life After Death, albeit with a more skeptical tone.

I did enjoy this book a great deal By Katrina Rose, Author I didn't really need to read a book to determine whether or not I believe ghosts are real, when I already know the answer. I do. I have seen ghosts, smelled their lingering perfumes, and I have felt them. I did enjoy this book a great deal, as it lends a light on spirits and spirits of those who use to be people like you, and me. Worth the money and read.

I'm in love with this book and its bound to become my new favorite

Although my natural was strict, he had high aspirations for my siblings and I in terms of our future academic and career goals. He was not fully expressive in his love for us outwardly but showed it by giving us gifts and providing for us. When I read Pastor Brent's book, I was so much more assured of my heavenly Father's infinite and unconditional love for me that it propelled me to a deeper and newer level of intimacy with Him. Knowing that God's love is abundant, constant, matchless and much more in spite of the good and lean times guarantees that my identity as His daughter meets His approval. His Word and promises in the book are very true. It is so worth reading, cannot be missed and I hope it spreads globally for the glory of an awesome Author and Finisher of our faith.

If you ever doubted your worth or felt unloved you need to read this book. The world all around us speaks lies to us about our identities, but when you hear God's truth about your worth, your heart will leap for joy. We begin to see just how much our Heavenly Father loves us with each page we read. Brent's book speaks to the deepest places of our heart with sound scriptural meditations. Currently, there is the highest level of evidence for physiotherapy and bracing for scoliosis. In contrast, evidence for spinal fusion surgery remains questionable. Moreover, recent improvements in bracing now strive to improve curvature rather than merely stopping progression during the pubertal growth spurt. Adolescent patients can potentially achieve significant corrections via bracing and improve postural imbalances. Pattern-specific exercises, based on long-established Schroth methodology, have also been updated. Used during phases of significant growth velocity, patients have potential for improvement without surgery. ‘Original Schroth’ exercises, developed by Katharina Schroth, were initially for curvatures in excess of 90º. Schroth Best Practice® simplifies the exercises so adolescents, as well as adults, of all curve magnitudes can benefit. The protocols include new additions with respect to the sagittal profile. Patients acquire a new sense of postural awareness and are able to help themselves by learning to avoid curve-stimulating behaviors.

I have met Dr Weiss when he was in the states and seen the new brace being used in the US. It makes a lot more sense then operating on kids and teens, more people with scoliosis should look into Schroth and Bracing

Andrew Louth, one of the most respected authorities on Orthodoxy, introduces us to twenty key thinkers from the last two centuries. He begins with the Philokalia, the influential Orthodox collection published in 1782 which marked so many subsequent writers. The colorful characters, poets and thinkers who populate this book range from Romania, Serbia, Greece, England, France and also include exiles from Communist Russia. Louth offers historical and biographical sketches that help us understand the thought and impact of these men and women. Only some of them belong to the ranks of professional theologians. Many were neither priests nor bishops, but influential laymen. The book concludes with an illuminating chapter on Metropolitan Kallistos and the theological vision of the Philokalia.

Modern Orthodox Thinkers: From the Philokalia to the Present, by Andrew Louth

Review "Through the lives and thought of a score of Orthodox theologians, Andrew Louth shows the distinctiveness of their theology, grounded not in academic concepts and constructs but rather in prayer, paths toward holiness and the experience of the living church. A thoroughly engaging introduction to the ways of modern Orthodox theology." (Vigen Guroian, author of The Melody of Faith)"Fr. Andrew Louth, who is himself one of the foremost Orthodox theologians of our time, offers us in this volume much more than a survey of 'modern Orthodox thinkers,' despite the humble simplicity of the title. The wonderfully surprising grace of this work is that it succeeds in communicating not only the thought of the major figures in modern Orthodox theology but the spiritual wellsprings of that thought in Orthodox prayer and liturgy. An equally inspired feat is his presentation of the rich diversity of modern Orthodoxy, comprising clerical and lay theologians, both men and women, hailing from a great variety of backgrounds and perspectives. This is a work of scholarship that is imbued with a Eucharistic spirit. The reader will feel both nourished by its erudition and deeply grateful for its illumination of the manifold manifestations of the Spirit in modern Orthodoxy." (Khaled Anatolios, University of Notre Dame)"Rewarding and timely, Modern Orthodox Thinkers is both an informative introduction to a gallery of individual thinkers and a coherent meditation on the significance of Orthodox thought in the modern world." (Avril Pyman, FBA, reader emerita in Russian literature, University of Durham)"By following the trajectory of Orthodox thought wherever it has blossomed across the world, this revelatory book charts a whole new constellation in the cosmos of Eastern Christianity. Andrew Louth's warm and lucid exposition, combined with his deep learning, makes him the ideal ambassador of the religious ideals he explores." (Rosamund Bartlett, author of Tolstoy: A Russian Life)"We have needed this book for a long time. Praise to Andrew Louth for his extraordinary breadth and depth in painting a multicolored portrait of the many faces of Orthodox theology since the late eighteenth century." (Sarah Hinlicky Wilson, Institute for Ecumenical Research, Strasbourg, consultant, International Lutheran-Orthodox Joint Commission)"Father Andrew Louth offers us an account of Eastern Christianity made up of men and women, flesh and blood, engaged on the extraordinary project of the kingdom of God on earth. The celebrated English Orthodox theologian gives us the chance to meet the living icons for whom Orthodoxy was an existential, rather than confessional, guide. It is an anthology with the secret project of pursuing a tradition of thought that refuses to separate the good, the just and the beautiful. A book to read and re-read." (Antoine Arjakovsky, founding director of the institute of ecumenical studies, Lviv, Ukraine, research director, Collège des Bernardins, Paris)"This is a brilliant introduction to the living theology of the Orthodox Church since the publication of the Philokalia in 1782, revealing the amazing diversity and fecundity of the Orthodox theological tradition. This is sure to become the standard handbook on the ways of Orthodox theology in the nineteenth and twentieth century inspired by, and inspiring, the love of the good and beautiful." (John Behr, dean, St. Vladimir's Seminary, New York)"This book will be a revelation to those unfamiliar with orthodoxy, and can serve as an excellent introduction. For those already familiar with the general scope of modern orthodox theology, this will be an essential work distinguishing and comparing the variety of orthodox theologians. Highly recommended!" (Clint Schnekloth, Lutheran Confessions, October 26, 2015)

Insightful By Michael Philliber For one who hardly knows the difference between an archimandrite and an apolytikion, or a hatjis and a heretismoi, it’s a bit of a stretch to pick up and stay with the 416 page paperback “Modern Orthodox Thinkers: From the Philokalia to the Present”. Yet Andrew Louth, who serves as a priest in the Russian Orthodox parish in Durham and is professor emeritus of patristic and Byzantine studies at Durham University, England, as well as a visiting professor of Eastern Orthodox theology at the Amsterdam Centre of Eastern Orthodox Theology in the Faculty of Theology, the Free University, Amsterdam, has made what at first appears insurmountable into something obtainable. This scholarly tome leads an interested reader through the development of a particular stream of Eastern Orthodox thought that winds its way from Mount Athos, to Russia, on to Paris, over into Greece, across to America and to finally settle in England. For the non-Orthodox, it is an unfamiliar world with its own language and choreography, but it’s an intriguing world. The premise of “Modern Orthodox Thinkers” is stated squarely in the subtitle, “From the Philokalia to the Present”. The Philokalia was compiled in the eighteenth century by two Orthodox monks, St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain and St. Makarias of Corinth, on Mount Athos as an instructive guide for other monks. The work collected texts written by earlier Christian pastors, monks, theologians and spiritual guides as part of a renewal movement within the Orthodox Church that sought to restore the tradition of Byzantine monasticism, return to the Fathers, reestablish the importance of a monasticism that focused on prayer, especially the Jesus Prayer, and restore the role of spiritual fatherhood (9). Though the multi-volume work of the Philokalia was meant for monastic renewal, once it was published and began to be read by a larger Orthodox audience, it became part of a watershed moment in the history of Orthodox theology (10). “The Philokalic movement provided a powerful resource for such return to Orthodox principles, as it had at its heart a programme for a renewed personal spirituality, based on the Jesus Prayer, and an emphasis on the importance of…spiritual eldership that, at its best, made sure that the spiritual revival remained sound and healthy” (11).The author weaves and walks his way through numerous Orthodox examples, most of whom were not theologically trained, and many who were not ordained clergy. Louth largely focuses “on the presence of Orthodoxy in the West, and especially the influence of the Russians who found themselves in Paris after their expulsion from Russia in 1922” (282). He follows the trail which “blossomed in the Russian Religious Renaissance” and found its way into Greece and beyond, because he sees this renewal, that was marked out by the publication of the Philokalia, as representing “all that is best in Orthodox theology over the last two centuries” (333).“Modern Orthodox Thinkers” snakes its way through the life stories of a crowd of people. The Author begins with Solov’ev and ends with Metropolitan Kallistos, bringing along a troop of others such as Florensky, Bulgakov, Berdyaev, Florovsky, Mother Maria, Staniloae, Popovic, Evdokimov, Meyendorff, Schmemann, Vasileios, Zizioulas, Romanides, Sherrard, Koutroubis, Yannaras, Ramfos, Behr-Sigel, Clement, Mother Thekla, Silouan, Sophrony, and Men’. Each chapter gives just enough biographical data to help the reader feel informed about the particular person being discussed, and then the sample aspects of how the Philokalia worked into and out of that persons experience are graciously opened up and worked through. It appears to me that the author is fair in his approach and judicious in his analysis. Some of the subjects that are covered with quite a bit of regularity are Sophiology, apophatic theology over and above the kataphatic, starets and the starchestvo, the Jesus Prayer, Gregory Palamis, palamism and neo-palamism, theosis, and monasticism. But always the distinctive thread sown into the fabric of this book is the Philokalia and that “theology is not concerned with concepts, though it makes use of them, but concerned with engagement with God” (138).Louth is skillful in translating concepts and ideas that may be foreign to the non-Orthodox reader, while keeping the flow of the book from stalling. Not only was “Modern Orthodox Thinkers” helpful to me in pointing out some of the unique ways Orthodoxy views the Christian faith, but it also pulled together the historical developments of the Orthodox Church in America and gave me a richer understanding of several of the Orthodox writers I have read in the past. I’m certain that many Orthodox readers will find the book a worthwhile read, and for American Protestants, this book may well give you better insight as to why Orthodoxy is finding a foothold in North America. Though I personally and confessionally don’t agree with all of the theological conclusions of the book, nevertheless I highly recommend it.Thanks to IVP Academic for the free copy of “Modern Orthodox Thinkers” used for this revie

Super introduction to modern orthodox thinkers By Clint Schnekloth Instead of attempting to describe "orthodox theology" in the modern era, something Louth believes is problematic because there is no specifically orthodox theology, only individual orthodox thinkers who contribute to orthodox thought, Louth offers this work, originally a series of lectures, that introduce readers to significant orthodox thinkers. It's really a spectacular approach. Louth believes the Philokalia itself represents a major turning point, a return to the sources that distinguishes orthodox thought from more Western modalaties (in particular Idealism). But what is wonderful about this book is the simplicity of the idea, spend a chapter on an individual thinker, and cast the net as wide as possible, including thinkers of all sorts, in particular lay theologians and non-professional theologians, who truly represent modern orthodox theology. This book will be a revelation to those unfamiliar with orthodoxy, and can serve as an excellent introduction. For those already familiar with the general scope of modern orthodox theology, this will be an essential work distinguishing and comparing the variety of orthodox theologians. Highly recommended!

Kovacs The best book of its kind that I've ever come across, I simply can't recommend it highly enough for those Orthodox who have been pushing themselves to deepen their knowledge and practice of the faith once delivered to the saints. It doesn't include all your favorites (or your not particularly favorites) -- there are no chapters on St. John of Kronstadt, Lev Gillet, Seraphim Rose, Elder Paisios, or Mother Gavrilia, to name names across the spectrum. But Andrew Louth does a superb job of guiding us along the path from the Philokalia to the present day, with the help of thinkers like St. Justin Popovich, Elisabeth Behr-Sigel, Vladimir Lossky, Elder Sophrony, and Mother Thekla. You will be able to see where your parish fits into this rich heritage and where you yourself fall within it, according to the thinkers who have most influenced you (perhaps without you even knowing it) as your life unfolds in Orthodoxy. A most welcome feast of a book for those who are ready!
