Though, I suppose, it would be best to start at the beginning.Ember Howard is likable from the first page. She is a relatable young woman whose world is dealt a shattering blow. A military brat all her life, she and her family understand the risks involved when a loved one is overseas, but no one ever sees it coming. And when three knocks at Ember’s door arrive too early one morning, she knows nothing will ever be the same. Her father was killed overseas and now Ember is left with a family in pieces and she is the only one strong enough to hold them together.Yarros has an incredible way of weaving vivid scenes with concrete details. She does what only the best author’s can do—grounds the reader in the world she has created to the point where we’re no longer reading a book, but living another life. And Ember’s is one worth falling into.The scenes in which Ember deals with the loss of her father are as much heart-wrenching as they are eye-opening. Readers get a taste of the real effects of war—not from a television screen or from the lips of a reporter who has never left the United States—but from the perspective of the family. It is close and real and raw, with such authenticity that, as Ember takes stuttered breaths, readers carry the weight with her as opposed to being a bystander.Ember is a strong female character who inherits the care-taker role for her family when her mother mentally checks out after losing the love of her life. Ember is selfless, giving up the life she knew and stepping into a new world where she is the only one who can save her family. There isn’t a second for her to focus on her own grief, but she’s fine with it. She doesn’t need anyone to save her. Or so she thinks.Enter Josh Walker—Ember’s little brother’s incredibly sexy hockey coach. In Review: Full Measures by Rebecca Yarros By Kim {kimberlyfaye reads} After reading a book as incredible as Full Measures, I have to stop and ask myself why I don't allow myself to give books more than five stars. This one, honestly, is deserving of no fewer than ten. One of my favorite new adult reads of 2014, I can't recommend this one highly enough to anyone who wants to feel all the feels when they read.Ember's life is falling apart. Her father was killed overseas where he worked as a military doctor. Her mother is falling apart. Her sister is acting out and on a bad path. The only thing she has left are her plans for the future, her best friend and her boyfriend. Until the night she finds out she has none of those things anymore either. But, she finds what she does have is Josh, the guy she's had a crush on forever, who has just walked back into her life and offers her the support and friendship she needs. Their friendship develops into something much more and everything is great, until Ember finds out Josh has been keeping a secret that threatens to ruin what they have.I loved Ember. I felt sympathy for her because in the aftermath of her father's death, *everything* was going wrong for her. The people who were supposed to be there for her weren't. (Bad boyfriend, bad "friend.") She was so busy taking care of everyone else, she had no one to take care of her. She was so strong, but she still needed someone to lean on. Enter Josh. A hockey player and former "bad boy," he was an incredible friend to her when she needed someone most. He was sexy and swoony and so very supportive. The two of them were magical together. Their chemistry was intense. It about broke my heart when they started having trouble. They'd both been through so much and were so much better together than they were apart. I just needed them to see that. You know it's a good book and you've connected to the characters when you want to reach into the pages and shake some sense into them!Everything about this book was absolutely gorgeous. The writing, the characters and their development, it was all perfect. This was so much more than a romance. Sure, that was a huge part of it, but it was about hopes and dreams, family and friendships, love and loss and second chances. It was unputdownable from page one. I fell in love with the characters and I felt everything they were going through. So many emotions – good, bad, and everything in between. It was sometimes sweet, sometimes sad, sometimes sexy and entirely hopeful. I was completely exhausted at the end, but I still found myself wanting more of these characters."Live, baby. Laugh, cry, scream, and love. By LWF My review: 5 Stars!Full Measures is a beautiful new adult novel that dives into the life of a young woman who’s grown up in a military family. Now, I’m not a reviewer that ruins plots. I’m not going to talk through what happens when and how I reacted. But I can say this, the love interest, Josh, is all man. Ugh, duh, he’s the male love interest. Clearly, but allow me to explain. All too often I run into “guys” in new adult novels that never take those steps to really develop into a man that as a character I respect.I totally respect Josh. Heck, he even made me appreciate a sport that I will never understand (especially the cost that goes into it). Can you guess what sport? Hockey! Yeah, I'm Minnesotan, but I just don't get Hockey. It's so darn expensive and who wants to spend more time out on ice? Not me. Anyway, another reason I love him is he makes me go all...*Imagine gif of a girl's jaw dropping and drooling over a guy's hotness*And Ember, the main character? Oh, I felt her pain. I felt her struggle!*imagine cool gif of a gorgeous girl crying*Yarros instantly (I mean INSTANTLY. Don't read the first chapter of this book in public if you are a crier!) drew me in with her ability to capture Ember’s voice and spirit in her beautiful writing.I highly recommend buying this book!
