SAINT PAUL, writing to the Christian converts, addresses them as persons called to be Saints. It is clear from this mode of address that, in the eyes of the Apostle, the vocation of every Christian, as such, is that he be a saint. To the Apostle’s mind this calling, once one has been baptized, is ineluctable. To evade it to the end is not merely to risk but actually to incur everlasting unhappiness. Startling as this thought is, there is not needed much reflection to see that its truth cannot be gainsaid.Nothing “unsaintly” can find place in heaven.

A Guide to Forms of Prayer to Create A Relationship Between Soul and God By Paul Edward Leen's Progress Through Mental Prayer, is a reprint of the 1935 Copyright edition printed in 2006 by Catholic Authors Press. But this does not mean the book is out of date. On the contrary, this book is so good that anyone who has problems with prayer will find the means to learn how to pray in small steps and progress to the deepest levels of prayer. The Forward in the book states: "The instruction on prayer are given to the public in these pages are meant to be a help for the ordinary soul." It says in the section on the Nature of Prayer, "The ultimate end of the relationship established between the soul and God in prayer, is, that the soul should, by His help, abandon its own natural earthly way of thinking and willing, and enter into God's views and affections, judge things as God judges them, and therefore conform its thoughts and desires to the thought's and desires of God."Recapping the Chapters gives you a glimpse of the development of prayer sources and types. Some people are different than others, and the book deals with these differences, and reviews the problems, and difficulties with prayer, and some solutions, or recommendations, how to deal with them, and it will give you a good sense that this book truly is a valuable resource, that has lasted the test of time. PART I: Nature of Prayer: Chapter I The Aim of Mental Prayer; Chap.2 Perseverance in Prayer; Chap. 3, Vocal Prayer; Chap. 4, The Ordinary Process of Mental Prayer; Chap. 5 Transforming Effect of Mental Prayer; Chap. 6, The First Stage in the Transformation; Chap. 7, The Second Stage in the Transformation; Chap.8,The Third Stage of the Transformation; Chap. 9, Mount Thabor (The Transfiguration of Christ on Mt Thabor); PART II, Method in Mental Prayer considered in Its Fundamental Principles: Chap. 10, The Vision of Faith Purified by Mental Prayer; Chap. 11, The Preliminary Acts in Mental Prayer; Chap. 12, The Body of Mental Prayer ("This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear him"); Chap. 13, Progress in Mental Prayer in the living God. (Meditation, Affective Prayer, and Prayer of Simplicity) PART III, Elements That Make for Progress in Mental Prayer: Chap. 14, Dispositions Requisite for Mental Prayer; Chap. 15, Spiritual Reading; Chap. 16 Mortification: A Condition of Life (This allows the life of Jesus to be manifest in our bodies); and finally, Chap. 17, Silence, A Means to Recollection ("In silence and quiet the devout soul goes forward and learns the secrets of the Scripture.")So you can see a progression in the development of prayer, various methods of prayer, elements that make up mental prayer. The more advanced you proceed you get to contemplation and silent meditation, and this also takes practice beginning with 15 minutes of silence, and working it slowly up to 90 minutes. Yes, just like the monks, I am not one by the way. But you can do it, and reach your best level of prayer, using this book.Peace and goodness,PaulCFP, Novice 3

Leen's books well-written and beautiful, and this one is no exception. A good reference book with wise advice!
