In Nothing To It, Brother Phap Hai brings his characteristic warmth and humor to explore the many different gates to transformation offered by Buddhism. A gate is a teaching, practice, or way of looking at things. Each gate is an invitation to consider a new frame of reference through which we can consider our situation, an opportunity to look at things differently. Readers who enjoyed Bhante Gunaratana's Mindfulness in Plain English will delight in this new explanation from the Australian-born senior monk of Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, California. There are fifty-eight gates explored in Nothing To It, arranged in ten traditional groups, with one chapter exploring each gate. Based on a series of talks given by Phap Hai in 2013, the book is designed to be equally valuable when read through at leisure or used as the text for a ten week self-guided course. Each chapter includes questions for reflection, additional reading suggestions on the topic, and writing exercises. The gates can be explored in order or investigated at random. Phap Hai’s charming blend of ancient wisdom, Dharma scholarship, and contemporary applications will offer all who read Nothing To It a new way of seeing the extraordinary opportunities for transformation in everyday life.

To get to this lofty goal, we are taught to compartmentalize our lives between work, play, and rest. And for some of us we try to squeeze in some time for spiritual practice. But what if the veils separating these areas could drop? What if every aspect of your life, from the most mundane activity like washing dishes to the most grand vacation, were equally fresh experiences? In a way, this book is a continuation of Thich Nhat Hanh’s The Miracle of Mindfulness and The Heart of the Buddha's Teachings. The comparison is appropriate considering Brother Phap Hai is a senior monastic in the Plum Village tradition founded by Thich Nhat Hanh. With this book he presents thoughtful readings and exercises to help uncover the ideas and notions of what a meaningful life looks like to the reader. This is not a one-size fits all approach, but rather a guide to help uncover the unique joy that your life holds right now – just as it is.Ancient teachings are presented with the lightness and timeliness familiar to those who have heard Brother Phap Hai’s talks in person or through the Deer Park Dharmacasts. The book is organized into 10 sections each ending with Questions for Reflection and Suggested Practices that are so simple that they stick with you over the course of the week that you are meant to work with them. These teachings and exercises can benefit anyone who seeks to explore their inner emotional and psychological landscape. Whether you are religious or not, are new to meditation, have been at it for decades, or are somewhere in between, there is something here for you. The only requirement is curiosity and you’re good to go!

A Gem Worth Reading By Brian Kimmel Every time I open, Nothing To It, I am reminded of the many gems present in my life that are helping me to restore love and sanity to my world. Brother Phap Hai, not unlike his teacher, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, has offered an approachable, easy-to-read but in-depth mindfulness companion. Full of heart-centered and digestible wisdom. Inspiring. Thought-provoking. Relevant to our time. Nothing To It, is a helpful guide and inspiration now and in moments you may need it the most. I am continually gladdened and touched by the remarkable candor and skill of Brother Phap Hai's teaching. I read the sections in, Nothing To It, bit by bit to allow the profound and usable wisdom of each of the short segments of the book to empower my sense of freedom and belonging. From questions to reflect upon to practices I can try-out in my daily life, it's really a source-book that I have found myself going back to over and over again.Brother Phap Hai wrote: "Our teachers may not be perfect, but if they've offered us a single word of Dharma or a sentence that has helped us to be able to transform our heart...They are kind spiritual friends; they're true friends. And for me, that's the role of a teacher. Don't be mistaken here; true kindness is not always a box of chocolates. It'd be nice if it was, right? Kindness can sometimes be fierce if that's what's needed. But that's a story for another time."I highly recommend you purchase a copy of, Nothing To It, for yourself and loved ones. Maybe even send a copy to someone you don't like too! Or to someone you think may need it. The message is that there really is nothing to it, so give it a try.
