Mark struggled at school and became depressed because he was bullied. Ana Maria feared leaving her home after dark due to gun violence. Mario and his family benefited from an intervention to prevent the spread of avian flu in his village. Health problems like these affect not only individuals but also families and communities. These examples suggest how community health is realized in peoples’ lives and affects people living in the same place who share similar beliefs and values. For example, feeling safe within one’s community is an essential part of living a healthy life. The narratives in this book explore a wide range of topics—social ties, gender and sexuality, mental illness, violence, prevention, and health-care access—that shape community health. Featuring “Communities in Action” sketches describing good community health programming as well as a guide for teachers, this book, along with its companions Global Health Narratives: A Reader for Youth and Environmental Health Narratives: A Reader for Youth (UNM Press), provides a comprehensive curriculum that examines people’s health experiences across cultures and nations. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS Emily Mendenhall is an assistant professor of global health at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Kathy Wollner is a family medicine resident physician in Seattle, Washington.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this book is a wonderful resource for making interdisciplinary connections with students By Molly Nicol As a middle school English teacher at a magnet school focused on Engineering and Science, this book is a wonderful resource for making interdisciplinary connections with students. I often struggle with how to connect my content area, literacy, to the concepts and issues students are learning in their Science courses, but this anthology provides a unique opportunity to do just that. I also loved that the subject matter of the narratives were so relevant to students' lives. I teach in North Philadelphia and my students and I often examine the issues of poverty as it relates to education inequity. It was wonderful to be able to look through a different lens, that of community health, and for students to be able to make connections between what they are studying in school and not just the world around them, but their immediate community as well.

It is written to inspire empathy for the stories told rather than judgement. A great read for middle/high school students and even college students who are just starting to discover life beyond their bubble. In conjunction with the other two books (Global Health Narratives and Environmental Health Narratives), the series offers real and detailed insight in other peoples' experiences. We are all part of a global community and our experiences have value no matter the person or place.

Parts were about when you are growing up and the struggles with health and violence. It taught me about the problems in health care like human trafficking and how awful it is. There was a kid who was brought from Ecuador to work in an orange grove and a kid is there with his family and sees him missing teeth and with lots of scars and starts a charity to help him. The book made me want to go make the world a better place.
