Yes, our past makes us who we are today but it IS possible to rise above no matter who difficult the struggle. Darcy Scott has taken scenic Maine and made it the setting for this story of 'Mahgell' Mattews and her vehement hold on her emotions and almost manic care of her daughter Simi. Dealing with the memories and continuing mental abuse of her dying mother she isolates herself to protect her heart and what stability she has created. Small town life in Mosquito Harbor is the salve she unknowingly needs to heal, and to raise her spark of a daughter! Scotts characters come to life with vivd personalities....my favorite being Alva- the level-headed patriach of the local lobstering and boatyard family. My one wish was that i could stick my nose into the pages and come away with the aroma of that salt air! And maybe the ending came wayyyy too soon??!!

I want to spend time in this coastal town in Maine and drink coffee with Alva. I am normally a lover of fast paced mysteries but this story captured me form the start to the very end.

Perfect for Maine lovers By halev Darcy Scott calls this her “auto-bio novel—a semi-autobiographical take on escaping a toxic family situation,” which she has been “writing and rewriting over the course of the last fifteen years.” She told me when I chose it for review at a Maine Authors Publishing Workshop that it was her “dark” novel. I feared being immersed in ghost or macabre fiction, which does not interest me. Rather it is a deeply insightful portrayal of a Margel’s recovery from her past and of a coastal Maine fishing village where she has settled. The undercurrents of romantic and financial interests among the village inhabitants are most vividly portrayed. An unforgettable centerpiece of the story is Flo’s restaurant full of colorful characters including Elmer who announces loudly the name of each entering person. The multitude of scenes, from the past and elsewhere in the village, become vividly alive in the author’s hands. The darkness in the story is the toxic family situation of the protagonist’s youth, which still lives with her and, through her, threatens her young daughter. The portrayal of the protagonist’s coming to terms with herself in that village is deftly handled with sensitive insight. For me, the takeaway value was that I came away enriched by having learned something of the inner life of a most skillful author, Darcy Scott.Hale Bradt, July 2015Hale Bradt is the author of the trilogy, Wilber’s War: An American Family’s Journeys through World War II (Van Dorn Books).

It could have been much better if some of the things in here didn't sound so Childish and Unbelievable.I'm also not sure if this book is suppose to be Part Of A Series of Trilogy. There wasn't really an ending, which made it confusing.I think that the Author could have eliminated some of the unnecessary dialog between Beth and Mr. Blake (Anthony), and gave us a real ending.I also didn't understand why Beth kept calling her boss Mr. Blake, even after her said to call him Anthony and especially after they were living together and sleeping together.

Provides A Peek Deep Inside China - By Loyd Eskildson State engagement in health government governance is a relatively recent development in rapidly modernizing China - the government's first health-care moves post-Mao were to withdraw from the sector, acerbating problems of cost, access, and equality; average life expectancy rose by only five years between 1981 and 2009, compared to an increase of almost 33 years during the Mao era (1949-1980). To be fair, its initial improvements (35 to 67.9) came from a much lower base, yet other nations have improved more from a similar base in recent years.Infant/maternal mortality has made considerable strides recently. Infant mortality in China decreased from 38 deaths/1,000 live births in 1990 to 16 in 2010, and the mortality rate for children under five dropped from 48 per 1,000 live births to 18. The maternal mortality ratio has also fallen, from 110 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 38 in 2008.Another substantial improvement - TB cases in 2010 China were estimated at 216 per 100,000, down 45% from 2000.Chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular are the leading causes of death in China - with pollution contributing to at least the cancer death rates. Public opinion surveys in 2009 ranked health care and food and drug safety as among the nation's top three concerns. A major contributor was the introduction of market-oriented reform w/o adequate rule of law.Industrial pollution is not the only instance of conflict between economic and health goals. China has one-third of the world's smokers and suffers about one million related deaths/year; its cardiovascular disease death exceeds that in the U.S.Author Huang suggests separating public hospital ownership from management and ceasing the use of drug sales as the main revenue source for hospitals, similar to Taiwan. (Of every $100 spent on U.S. health care, $10-$12 goes for drugs, in China it is $40-$45.) He also suggests replacing fee-for-service with DRG and capitation to give those hospitals incentive to hold down costs and improve accountability. As for food and drug safety, Huang sees weak enforcement as the greatest problem, sometimes based on 'political consideration' (corruption), especially at the local level. This problem is acerbated by the absence of press freedom.The 'good news' is the incoming president Xi Jinping has pledge to bring higher levels of health care to China's people - Beijing plans to triple its health care spending to $1 trillion by 2020.Bottom-Line: China spent less than 5% of GDP on health care in 2005, vs. 16% in the U.S. and 10% in Canada. However, China's advantage in purchasing power parity leads author Huang and others to probably overstate the crisis in China's health-care as far as financial commitment is concerned; this is especially likely given that the author's estimates of government spending have been labeled as far too low (Tang, Baris). It also has initiated a program of encouraging Western hospitals to invest in China. A third major initiative - expanding health insurance to universal levels by 2020 (now reportedly at over 94%, though at low benefit levels that focus on in-patient care).

This talented author takes the dreams and frustrations of small-town waitress Marlene past the clichés of family life, careers and relationships into a gripping story of someone who knows she deserves a better lot in life. Not only was Carlson dead on with her description of family and future dreams but I didn't anticipate any of the plot twists which soon became apparent were true to the Marlene's journey. All the incredible writing one had discovered in the Charismatics was evident once again in Misery and Marlene. And as everyone waits for the sequel to The Charismatics, I couldn't help thinking that this could also have been a past-life dream Duchess Ambrose was having as she gathered her courage for her next adventure. Bravo!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An emotional classic! By Laura Pickren Misery and Marlene is an amazing read of a young woman that lives a life that most people know too well. I found a great deal of myself in her and felt her pain and struggles as if they were my own. I felt invested in Marlene’s life and became attached to this anti-heroine. Carlson’s writing is charming, and the story of Marlene’s everyday hardships and dreaming of a better life made this novella an emotional classic for me. I look forward to more from this talented author.

Great Value for 4 Stories in 1 Book By Bryan Great value for 4 stories in 1 bookMy overall rating: 4.75 STARS (Book 1: 4 stars*, Book 2: 5, Book 3: 5, Book 4: 5)I gave Story 1 four stars because I disliked how the author arrived at the ending. It felt very rushed to go from: Elise just opening up to Tristan, to suddenly, happily ever after. Besides that, I enjoyed the story.Personally, the one that blew me away was Story 2. In my humble opinion, it's written beautifully from beginning to end. It flows perfectly, and I wouldn't change a thing.(Wow, can't believe I'm a sucker for these stories. And I'm not afraid to admit it, clearly.)Cheers!

It was so easy to get caught up in the story and the lives of the characters as they learn not to judge others so quickly and to trust God and each other. I definitely look forward to reading the next book in this series. I was furnished an e-copy of this book in return for an honest review and this is a book that I can recommend to anyone who loves a good Christian romance.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Because 3 is Better Than 2 By Jill I'm a firm believer in the idea that "more is better", and I'm a big fan of Kristina Wright's anthologies. So when I was asked to read a book that combines menage and her taste in erotica? Yes, please. Sign me up for that. I was definitely not left disappointed.As is the case with most anthologies, there were some stories that I absolutely loved, and others that I didn't care for so much. But the great thing is that these are short stories, so it's easy to skip ones that you don't like in the future, or to read as many steamy scenes as you want, or as little, without fear of missing something or mixing up stories.This book contains sixteen short stories that all focus on a central theme: threesomes. There's a good representation here of combinations of men and women, ensuring that there's at least a story for everyone.I'll give a brief highlight, as always, of the three stories that I like best. These are in no real particular order, nor are they the only ones that I enjoyed, just the ones that stuck out the most. The first story that stood out to me was "Eve's Apple Red" by Angela Caperton. In this story, a wife notices a new shade of lipstick on her husband's collar and explores who it belongs to. The reason why I liked this one is because I am an avid hoarder and user of makeup, so I really liked that the wife used lipstick colors to further the writing about her relationship. It catered to my interests in that regard, and of course the sex was pretty delightful too. The second story that I enjoyed is called "Medley of Desire" by AJ Lyle. Within this story, a lovely lady's two boyfriends come together in unexpectedly blissful way. Why I liked this one is because of the well done sex. It was steamy and hot and probably my favorite erotic scene in the book. On a more personal level, I liked it because one of her men calls her kitten, and that's what my girlfriend calls me. So it heated me up in a more personal, specific sort of way. My final highlight is for the story called "A Thief in the Night" by Giselle Renarde. This sexy little number includes a masked man who comes in the middle of the night, ties up one partner and has fun with another. Quite bluntly; that's my fetish. The author captured the sexual tension and the fantasy and the desire really well, and that is a story I'd read again and again.All in all, I think this is a great collection of erotica. This is a perfect book for those who are in menage relationships or who dream about them. While I didn't love every story, I enjoyed most of them and loved quite a few. This is obviously a book that contains adult themes like sex and BDSM, so naturally I recommend it to readers who are of age. Go forth and get this book, and may it serve as inspiration in your own boudoir.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Storey Threesomes are a staple of erotic writing, but most of the time these fictional encounters strike me as contrived and soulless. Thus it’s an unusual treat to read Kristina Wright’s “Three of Hearts,” a collection of diverse tales in which three consenting adults explore the emotional and sensual possibilities of a menage. Each of these stories offers excellent writing, steamy love scenes, and best of all a satisfying answer to the question “Why are these people in bed together doing luscious things to each other’s naked bodies?” The skillful and often humorous exploration of the characters’ motivations, longings, and discoveries lifts these encounters far above the cliche, and for me, the hottest stories are ones I can believe in. If you’re intrigued by threesomes—and who isn’t?—I highly recommend this anthology.

Threesomes, especially of the male/male/female variety are my favorite erotic anthology subject. The market is drowning in them, true, but they're mostly self-published e-books, and well, uh, don't share the same quality as their mainstream print collections. I've yet to find a Kristina Wright anthology I didn't like and her threesome anthology has made it to the very first space on my to-be-read again bookshelf, like the star on top of my literary Christmas tree.

As you'd expect, there's plenty of sex in this book but there's actually a plot to go with it, much like the porn they watch during their first appointment. =DThe story quietly follows Lori and Ander falling in love and shows how love changes you. There's no insta-love for those looking for it. Yes, she is attracted to him but one would expect a gigolo to be attractive, right? The story is told from Lori's POV (third person) as she gets to know the man underneath the polished persona. There's touches of humor (although not laugh out loud funny) but the book addresses how damaged Ander is to be prostituting himself. The comparison to Pretty Woman isn't very accurate. Pretty Woman never rang true to me because a streetwalker who isn't messed up in some fashion is rather unbelievable. The story tells us how Ander became an escort as well as how it continues to affect his feelings about himself. Of course, in the end, we get our HEA and it left me with a warm glow because I believed that Lori and Ander really loved each other and could work through any issues they might have to deal with in the future.There are a couple typos and extra/missing words but it's much better than most self published works which seems to be averaging at least one every page (in my experience).I got this book for free but I would gladly purchase future works by Claire Kent. So get working on them! ;)

I won't go into the detail of the story as it has been done many times over in different reviews.First, I agree with another reviewer with the lack of description in regards to character development and scenery. The story takes place in Seattle. That's it. No reference to the time of year- although I assume it must be winter due to the cashmere pajamas. Lori is an author, but surprisingly is never writing. She doesn't do anything except meet at a hotel for sex. I never got a feel for who she was, what motivates her and her writing. Ander is a blank page, other than his bald head and blue grey eyes. The author eludes to bad blood between Ander and his father, but never really gives us the backstory of their relationship and how they became estranged.I really did not like Lori at all. She pays Ander for sex, but she despises that he is a gigilo and has sex for money. What?? It bothers her that he doesn't divulge his personal life, yet she doesn't disclose that she is a famous author. Her hypocritical nature bothered me throughout the book.The sex scenes are clinical, almost disturbing at times. The sex is very one sided; Lori is multi multi orgasmic having 6 to 7 orgasms at a crack, which was totally unbelievable and weird. I found it uncomfortable as well when she would tell Ander it's ok for him to orgasm. The sex is very detailed and repetitive, especially the description of how he disposed of the protection after EVERY encounter.....Eewwww!!The repetitive verbs were annoying as well. Lori snickers and huffs with every encounter. Ander's lips twitch at every turn. The constant use of these terms were extremely distracting to the flow of the story.This story had a good premise, yet fell flat with one dimensional characters, lack of story development, and truly bad editing.

For those who love the Pretty Woman and The Wedding Date line, will love this book. For those of you who want to relate in real life, this book is probably not for you. I got this book as a free book from Amazon and I have to say, I was extremely impressed. Not only was this book well written, characters well developed, but the book was exciting and steamy in a good way! Lori was a successful romance book writer, but despite writing about romance, her love life was completely non-existent. She was still a virgin at 26 and just simply wanted to get that aspect over with in her life. She asks her cousin for some help and her cousin refers her to the most recommended escort. Lori decides to give it a try and hires Ander. The first time she met Ander, she was attracted to him, not just physically, but there was something about him that intrigued her.As expected, her first encounter with him was phenomenal and she soon finds herself addicted to him. Ander is a complex character. Despite his profession, he seemed to have different things going on in his life and had personal issues. Even though these two people were opposites, I really loved their relationship together. Obviously, there is a lot of sex and steamy scenes, but they were all so well written it was fantastic. Not only does this book have a story line, it also provides nice character development and plenty of romance.This book was totally worth it, even though I got it for free! If you are looking for something you can relate to, then this book is not for you. If you are just looking to find a swoon worthy romance book and believe in fairy tales, then this book is definitely for you!

Disappointing compared to his early work Journey into Consciousness By Rachel W Because the author's previous book, Journey into Consciousness: The Chakras, Tantra and Jungian Psychology, is so impressively written, I bought this book, wondering what it might be like in the realm of "applied spirituality," i.e. applying his meditative insights to past life reading. Note that what he does is not "past life regression" done in the form of hypnotherapy, as is commonly known today. The author simply meets his client, obtain some very basic information about him or her (such as age, occupation, etc.), observe his/her demeanor, and then give a super lengthy reading about this particular person's past lives. This book documents a series of such readings. I find all of them incredulous, but none of them helpful. I mean, you sit down in front of a total stranger, and he tells you that in your past life, you were this and that; and then in another past life, you were this and that... blah blah blah and on and on and on. What do you do? You believe in him? You listen to the incredible stories but, alas, they are really just "stories" to me. How do I establish any validity to them? What do I get out of this? So what if I was an Egyptian princess once and a circus magician another time? Nice stories, very captivating, but how does knowing these information enlighten and guide me in any ways?My biggest problem with this book is that the author doesn't delve deeper into the significance of doing past life readings. At the end, he gave some background info on what karma is, and some New Age beliefs, but nothing deep or insightful.I'd recommend his earlier book "Journey into Consciousness" wholeheartedly. But this book is a huge, total disappointment to me.

Having been brought up Christian, I find his writings especially liberating and enlightening. Most religions, including traditional forms of Buddhism, are mired in fundamentalism. Breaux does a brilliant job of extracting the essence of Tantric Buddhism ("The Tantric Path") and the wisdom teachings of Jesus ("The Quantum Gospel") and conveying them in the context of contemporary psychology and science.Breaux has taught psychic awareness and spiritual healing and worked with clients for some 45 years and writes from personal experience of mystical dimensions of consciousness. His view of our human condition and quest for spiritual transformation is down to earth and focused on a practical application. His writing, though somewhat scholarly and sourced from eclectic bibliographies, is very accessible, presenting complex philosophical concepts concisely.His "The Way of Karma" is the best I've seen on karma and how knowledge of it can best be used in our day-to-day life. "Hot Tamale Baby" is a good read chronicling the adventures of a modern Tantric yogi at play in the mundane reality of the west coast Cajun dance and music scene. I highly recommend all of his books.

Coate Contrary to the review called "Disappointing compared to his early work Journey into Consciousness" I found The Way of Karma most helpful in understanding how mental and emotional habits create the `karma' that is carried over into future lives. His readings clearly show how we develop these patterns and how enlightening it is to see where these patterns originated. The second part of the book showing how to work with karma is the most insightful information about karma that I have ever come across. I couldn't disagree more with the previously stated review...

I was familiar with most information on chakras (I am a reiki II practitioner), but I always like to get information from different perspectives, and the way Alicia presented it was pretty refreshing to me.What was new to me, were some facts on crystals and how you can use them to heal your energy. I think I feel encourgaed to try it, and maybe this author can also write a book on crystals....?Overall, nice little book. Simple, but effective.
