When it’s time to change your life for the better, everyone could use a little help.Merry Strand is spinning her wheels in her rural mountain hometown when Fritz Forth, her late father’s attorney, suddenly appears with a strange and wonderful proposition. Merry has a substantial inheritance coming, he says… but it’s conditional. Merry must accompany Fritz to the Atlantic coast and complete a series of life-improving tasks to earn her windfall. Like a fussy fairy godfather, Fritz promises to help Merry, though he makes it clear that he’d really rather not.Arriving on an abandoned barrier island in the offseason, Merry meets her curmudgeonly Uncle Max, who is hoping to steal her inheritance. Jack Morningstar, a depressed Midwestern widower, numbly occupies the beach house next door. Added to the mix are a philosophical dead Englishman, a crazy mountain town radio therapist, a suicidal software engineer, a matchmaking dog, and, possibly, a ghost. With empathy and wit, Rachel Michael Arends chronicles the ups and downs and eventual transformations of her richly drawn characters as they learn to help each other, and ultimately, to help themselves.

Wonderful read By AMK This is a wonderful lighthearted story with several serious elements like adoption, locating a missing father, and an inheritance. Merry meets Fritz when he brings paperwork from her father she never knew. She must go to a barrier island off North Carolina and live as she checks off several tasks in order to inherit his estate. She meets Jack as a love interest. I loved the location and all the assembled characters. An enjoyable book.

Sure the story was fairly predictable and I guessed the main mysteries long before they were revealed to Merry, the main character, but that's ok. It was fun watching the story unfold and wondering when everyone would guess the big secrets. (and I always feel somewhat smug when I guess them first! ha)The characters are richly drawn and believable - I could practically hear Merry's mountain-girl twang and Fritz's posh English accent. The location is a character in itself; I could smell the ocean air and hear the waves crashing. This is a Cinderella story from the get-go - - complete with Prince Charming living next door. This is a great beach read - - or a fireside one!

Arends does a great job creating a vivd story and charters. This is a excellent book for someone looking for a book to be pulled into as it grows. I think Jack was my favorite character. Start reading this book now and you'll be dreaming of the ocean before you know it.
