In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States, Christian educator Brian Moore found himself unable to quiet the horror and rage in his heart. When his unit of the Army National Guard deployed to Iraq about a year later he gladly took up his gun, prepared to seek justice for his country. Yet from his first step into a battle-zone in the Middle East it became clear that his expectations of Iraq, its people, and war in general would be challenged. From occupying one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces along the Tigris River to trekking through the Himalayan Mountains during a tour in Afghanistan, Moore details his war-time experiences with honesty, directness, and grit. His physical and spiritual strife while abroad changed his relationship with God and his fellow men, while reminding him what it means to be a witness for Christ - even to one's enemies. Brian's journey is inspiring and challenging - an exploration of overcoming the spiritual issues of war. A portion of sales from this book will go toward charitable organizations supporting veterans.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. This story is one that travels by way of the Soldier’s Heart By ~B. Moore The saying goes, 'don’t judge a book by its cover'. Well, on the cover of ‘Purple Hearts & Wounded Spirits’, I see a Soldier. A brief tour into the book though will not only confirm that the author, Brian Moore, is indeed a ‘Soldier’, but it will also reveal that this is a story about a man who is that, and much more.If this were a story of a man who was solely a Soldier, it would remain an interesting book. The reading style holds one’s attention with a tone that is comfortably conversational, offers a measure of familiarity to those with military background, or a good dose of novelty for the civilian, and provides an engaging balance of information and entertainment gleaned from the author’s personal experiences. This is more than a story though, it is a narrative, and the author is more than a Soldier, he is also a teacher, a friend, an enthusiast of all things history, a husband, a father*, and a dozen other life-roles.That this Soldier, is more than a Soldier, is in my opinion, the vitality of the book. For the Soldier, warring is the necessary assumption. To be human though, is to be much more than any single role, and herein lies the tension, and one that unabashedly arises in Moore’s story. For example, as a Father-Soldier, he confesses a felt angst arising in his duty to protect both country and family. Yet he also comes to find that these dual roles are not altogether exclusive to one another, and that in the midst of the discord, there is a measure of harmony to be found. To be clear though, while 'Purple Hearts & Wounded Spirits' addresses such internal conflicts, it is not intended to be a treatise or academic dissertation on the matter. Yet as such, the book holds tremendous appeal and literary virtue that is piercingly needed in our current culture. If you will bear with me, please allow me to unpack more fully how powerful the ‘appeal’ of 'Purple Hearts & Wounded Spirits' truly is, and do so by using another book for illustration…The writer of this review recalls years ago reading through C.S. Lewis’s book ‘The Problem of Pain’, in which Lewis delivers a profoundly cognitive discussion of suffering from a thoroughly theological and philosophical context. At one point though, Lewis includes a more personal statement describing an experience he had in writing the book, in which he admits, “If only this toothache would go away, I could write another chapter on the problem of pain”. Lewis’s observation is aptly tongue-in-cheek, and is a lead-in to the reality, that reality is deeply experiential, and as such, our experience of it both obscures its description while also providing us its most accurate and vivid details.Later in life Lewis would experience a toothache at the most existentially excruciating level. What followed was his writing another book on pain, one that he would entitle, ‘A Grief Observed’, in which he would again express his feelings on pain, but with a far more personal focus, and with immediate, raw, and visceral clarity. While I had appreciated Lewis's writing in 'The Problem of Pain’, and had even read it multiple times, I had not read ‘A Grief Observed’ until about a year ago when my own life circumstances prompted me to reach out to the book. To say I read through the book would not quite capture my experience though, it would be a more fitting confession to say that I wept my way through the book. So for all the merit and worth of Lewis’ philosophical text, ‘The Problem of Pain’, I can assure you that not one tear was shed throughout its reading.Quite Simply, there is something very captivating and meaningful that can never be had in hearing someone's lecture...it can only be tasted through the sharing of their own life story.Forgive my seeming derailment, but I say all that to affirm the authentic power that Brian Moore’s book offers as he narrates his very personal struggles in all its plain reality. In that sense, his book title could be read, 'The Soldier Observed'.Now this is not to say that only those who have seen combat will find benefit in reading the book. I myself am altogether civilian, and so I found Moore’s book appreciably enlightening, as well as providing me with a greater means for understanding and empathizing with the Soldier’s story. But for the Soldier-Reader, I suspect that the depth at which you may experience Moore’s book will far surpass my own or most any 'civilian', as the story is one that travels by way of the Soldier’s heart. As such, you may find that the author’s story holds similarities to your own, and that his experiences resonate deeply within your own soul. So I hope that you, like others, may find encouragement in its pages, along with a growing appreciation of the humanness of every Soldier. And that every true Soldier, has Heart. And every Honest Heart, is in need of Hope and Healing. It is my Hope that you grant yourself time to read through ‘Purple Hearts & Wounded Spirits’, and do so with an Honest and open Heart.*I can vouch for the genuineness of the author’s conflict as he sought to honor his competing life-roles. Not only have I read Moore’s testament of such struggles in the book itself, but I have also personally witnessed his wrestling with them throughout the years. And in personal response to that, I just wanted to say to the author, that it is indeed an honor to thank you for your service to the country as a Soldier, but immeasurably more so, for your loving service, leadership, and sacrifice to me…as my Dad.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I truly enjoyed this book By military sup I truly enjoyed this book. It was a sincere review of a persons journey through the war torn regions of the Middle East and how he, as a christian, family man and educator dealt with the conflicts that arose and how he stayed true to himself and his faith.I wish we had more straight forward books like this as it is nice to read something that concentrates on the choices a person that is dealing with adversity has to make and how he overcame the morale choices he was faced with without having to deal with your typical Hollywood sensationalism
