Palmer’s first novel, Pretty in Ink and was expecting If We Lived Here to be a light, fluffy rom-com filled with cute stories of a couple’s first attempt at cohabitation before marriage.Uh….no.IWLH is a deeper story where two characters, Nick and Emma, examine their relationship completely while trying to find an apartment in New York City. There is very minimal fluff and no cute stories, although there is an obligatory trip to IKEA where the couple cannot agree on Swedish goods. Since I started reading the novel with the idea that the story was going to be a certain way based on the back cover summary, I was extremely disappointed in the plot.What I loved: Emma’s best friend and family and their stereotypical New York “Jew-ness”. Is that even a word? Seriously, the reading voices in my head were excited when there were scenes featuring the best friend, Annie, and the sister-in-law, Alysse. I think I would have preferred to read an entire book about Annie.What I didn’t love: Nick and Emma. Neither character seemed very likable and very immature. Maybe its because I was in a completely different place when I was their age (30) but both characters did not seem ready to make any commitment, much less to a 1 year lease.What I learned: Manhattan real estate is beyond me…

Review: 'If We Lived Here' by Lindsey Palmer By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" After having been together for roughly three years, thirty-somethings Emma Feit and Nick O'Hare are ready for the next step: finding a new place and moving in together. However, the search for the perfect New York apartment, within a particular budget, isn't the easiest task, especially not when you're doing it next to a full-time job. While Nick is a primary school teacher, Emma tutors high school students who are in the middle of their college application process, which already demands a lot of her time. However, Emma is determined to find that amazing apartment for her and Nick, even when doubt comes around the corner and both of them start to wonder whether this is really what they want.Lindsey J. Palmer's 'If We Lived Here' is a contemporary story focusing on a topic many readers will be able to relate to: moving in together, and both the positive and negative experiences that come with it. Emma and Nick are ready to take the next step in their relationship, but while they are both excited to find their own perfect apartment and start building their lives together, the decision also comes with uncertainty and fear; will this really work, is this the person I really want to be with? The author has certainly managed to give a realistic portrayal of a modern-day relationship, and I liked both Emma and Nick and found myself rooting for them to make it work together. The author's writing style flowed easily and was comfortable to read, even though I wouldn't have minded a bit more dialogue.While I liked the basic plotline of this novel and the characters, I couldn't help but feel as if not much was really going on to keep my attention. The story is told from both Emma's and Nick's perspective, but it seemed like it didn't really have a purpose. I would personally have loved more focus on Emma's best friend's wedding or Emma's job helping high school students with their college applications (which would make a great novel in itself, I think); something else next to the search for their new home. On the whole, though, I thought 'If We Lived Here' was an honest, well-written and realistic contemporary women's fiction read that was definitely promising and entertaining at times; it just didn't completely live up to my own expectations of the novel.

Has all the warmth of a cozy blanket in front of the fire By Chick Lit Central By Gail AllisonEmma and Nick are completely ready to take the next step in their relationship and move in together. Probably.Emma is a go-getter whose current role at ‘1...2...3...Ivies!’ is helping high schoolers (and their ever-present helicopter parents) navigate the admissions process to hopefully help them gain admission to the school of their dreams. Nick is less of a self-starter, but is happy with his current role as a fifth grade teacher. When Emma and Nick decide to move in together they have no idea the variety of pitfalls that they could be facing. After all, they’re in love and they have good credit. What more could they need?When the story opens, Emma has found them a brilliant apartment with gorgeous hardwood floors, his and hers walk-in closets, and an affordable price tag. Of course, you know the saying: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. When they don’t get the place, Emma and Nick have to learn to lean on each other while not only keeping their own lives moving along, but trying to find a new place together and figuring out if this is really the right move at the right time for them.I really enjoyed how the author juxtaposed this point in Emma and Nick’s relationship and the growing pains it was going through against the secondary characters in the book. Max (Emma’s older brother) is happily married with a wife who has some serious Stepford qualities about her. Max and Alysse have two kids with another on the way, and although Max is painted as the established, in-control sibling, we find out later in the book that perhaps that’s not the best thing. Emma’s dear friend Annie is just getting married as the book opens, so we get to see the early marriage of Annie and Eli. And Emma’s other friend Genevieve is happily (she claims) single, so we get a fantastic view of a whole spectrum of relationship phases, including Emma and Nick’s.I especially liked how Ms. Palmer let each relationship (including the main characters’) grow and develop on its own. I find that a few authors focus so heavily on the main characters’ circumstances that any secondary characters’ situations almost start to feel stagnant by the end of the book. That was completely not the case here. I looked forward to Annie and Eli’s updates as much as I enjoyed the main storyline with Nick and Emma. They were all written as real people with real lives, real feelings, and real problems. Well done on that front, Ms. Palmer!For some reason I had trouble starting this one, but once I was a couple of chapters in it was much easier to get lost in the story. I kind of wonder if it’s the simple reason that I’ve just never had to go apartment hunting in the big city. In any case, once I got into the story of this novel I was hooked. If you’re planning on taking a look at If We Lived Here, and you’re not convinced by the fifth page, please give it five more. Trust me. At some points it felt like I was helping Nick and Emma navigate the real estate of New York and I’ve never even been there! If We Lived Here was a lovely story about a couple finding a real home, not just a place stay, and because of that underlying sentiment, this book had all the warmth of a cozy blanket in front of the fire.
