Review "Anne O'Connell has written an intimate thriller from an unusual and fascinating point of view: the families of Westerners living and working in the Gulf States. She takes the Not Without My Daughter plot and adds a new and satisfying twist."- Tim Brookes, author of Endangered Alphabets and director of the writing program at Champlain College, Burlington, Vermont "Deep Deceit is compulsive reading from start to finish. O'Connell cleverly combines the thrill of the chase with intense psychological elements, as her characters unravel under the pressure of events beyond their control. Who is telling the truth? What secrets does domineering husband, Ryan, hide and how far will those in power go to avenge the wrongs he has done? Can anything save his wife and daughter? And where does love fit into this riveting tale? I couldn't put it down until all had been revealed..."- Jae De Wylde, author, The Thinking Tank and Sleeping People Lie "I read this compelling novel in two settings and found it quite captivating. The characters were very believable and engaging and the plot had just enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. Someone not from the Middle East will certainly get a good look into what it is like to live there and understand the Arab and Islamic customs." Katie Foster, Travel Writer and Blogger at Arabian Tales and Other Amazing Adventures.
About the Author Anne Louise O'Connell grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has been an expat since 1993 when she and her husband escaped the cold of Canada on a hunt for warmer climes, with stops in Florida, Dubai and Thailand. In 2007, after almost 20 years in the PR business, O'Connell decided to focus on her real passion and just write. O'Connell is a multi-genre author having written three other books prior to Deep Deceit. She authored @Home in Dubai... Getting Connected Online and on the Ground; 10 Steps to a Successful PR Campaign-A Do-it-Yourself Guide for Authors; and Mental Pause, her first novel that won a bronze medal in the 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards. She also recently co-published an anthology titled Phuket Island Writers – An Anthology of Short Stories. Now that her second novel has launched she’s convinced that fiction is her ‘new calling’. She is currently working on her next novel, Paris, At Last and is also in the process of adapting Mental Pause into a screenplay. Readers can also look forward to a new series she’ll be writing called the Susan Morris Expat Mysteries. O'Connell loves to mentor other authors, does developmental editing and assists others in developing their author platforms. She enjoys editing women’s fiction, memoirs and sometimes children's books so she can return to her roots as a preschool teacher. She’s sometimes found writing features or columns as a contributing writer for Expat Focus and Global Living Magazine. In her ‘spare’ time she loves beach combing, traveling, reading, volunteering, mentoring, walking, swimming, writing and yoga.

Not after reading the delectable twists and turns these two women go through working their way into and out of problems that would have any mother of any culture beside herself and bring the lioness out along the way.No, in my real life haven't been to Dubai, but the scenes are so well done I felt the heat of the sun and the heat of the culture as both descend upon the heads of a mother in distress and her rather amazing friend who works to help her out.Underlying the story line, taking place in a foreign and treacherous land, is the story of friendship and support that we all wish for in our lives no matter where we live.In Deep Deceit you get a triple deck treat.1. An ongoing string of insights into a truly exotic land - clearly the author has either lived there herself or spent years on research getting it exactly right. Very Impressive!2. A story line with mystery within mystery and surprises all along the way. Masterly Done!3. Insights into the human condition that grab you up while transcending culture, history and circumstances. Reason alone to read this book. There is much more than meets the eye and first impressions with this book. Expect the unexpected as the characters develop - and enjoy what you find along the way.

The exotic locations of Dubai and Saudi are authentic and provide a colourful background to the drama and tension the author masterfully brings to an edge-of-the-seat crescendo. Unlike most 'expat' novels, it is the gripping storyline and the universal themes of abuse, neglect and oppression that are central, rather than the humdrum of the often unreal and privileged world of those who work away from home. The author's portrayal of the complexities of emotional damage is insightful and she demonstrates that nothing comes from nothing, and we are all vulnerable when it comes to our mental health. I couldn't put it down until all had been revealed...

The opening lines portrayed a friendship developing through hardship that would grow, permeate and infuse the arc of the story. This is a book about love, betrayal, loyalty, and friendship written beneath the backdrop of colorful, exotic, androcentric Dubai. For anyone who's ever traveled as an ex-patriot, you'll empathize with the character's needs to find their own "tribal members" and learn the lay of the land quickly. For any of us who are parents, and more fear instilling, parents in a foreign land, this roller coaster ride of emotions will keep you reading through to the satisfying end. While the story itself was a mystery thriller, the author painted life in Dubai with such vivid and evocative language, I felt myself immersed in the region. The descriptions of the wedding and the night club scene were particularly striking.I look forward to more from this author and to learn more about the character Susan, a natural-born caregiver and sleuth. Well done!
