Pastors and theologians -- too many to count -- have sat at the feet of the Rev. Dr. Norman E. Nagel, graduate professor emeritus of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. From Nagel, they learned of Christ and the innumerable gifts He gives. Now, this book of scholarly essays allows others to learn from the professor as well, as his students pay respect to their teacher on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday by doing just as he did: pointing others to Christ, His gifts and His cross.

A newly published festschrift (Dona Gratis Donata) in honor of Dr. Norman Nagel’s 90th Birthday provides at least 18 responses. What is more amazing and significant is the fact that not just these memoirs of the beloved, retired Sem prof at St. Louis, but that one can hear stories around the globe in bible studies, sermons and casual conversations quoting Dr. Nagel and sharing stories of this loved theologian. Many are favorite remembrances of Nagel encounters of the closest and best kind (theology, languages, missiology, and literature). Others take the route of preparing essays of particular theological interest to the honored professor. A rather fine example of the latter approach is David Maxell’s contribution on the cry of dereliction and divine impassibility. This examination sheds light on the early church and especially Cyril and provides Dr. Nagel’s take on all of this.Bill Cwirla’s essay on Nagelian Classroom Remembrances transports the reader to what many of us who experienced it firsthand recall--the eccentric prof with the truly out-of-the American education box teaching style. Like many, it evokes one’s favorite remembrances always centered on Christ crucified for our sins. Cwirla captures it well: “Language in the mouth of the professor is like a scalpel in the hands of a skilled surgeon. Ambiguities are the devil’s playground. Every word pressed hard, squeezed like a grape at harvest, yielding its last few drops of meaning and nuance. Can one say it better, more clearly, more faithfully, more in the way of the gospel? One sees the strain of language in the professor’s furrowed brow and the closed eyes. One hears it in the stammering cadence, the hesitations and hiccups, the careful reconsiderations of every word that is chosen with the care of a master craftsman.”Henry Gerike and Charlie Henrickson take to their expertise as hymn writers as their gift to the professor. In fact, their first stanza may be said to summarize this festschrift:Always more than we can measure, All the gifts God has in store; More than any earthly treasure, Gospel gifts are always more. For this reviewer, the best was saved for last, Nagel’s own essay, “Heresy, Doctor Luther, Heresy!” Sample some classic Nagelian wordsmithing that Cwirla touched on above: “If God does not change, man must change himself or God must change him. The change in man provides evidence for a favorable judgment by God who remains unchanged. An unchanging and apathetic God has great difficulty carrying on in history. Spontaneity, contingency, action, his heart being torn within him, generosity, his judgment, and dwelling in a world from which have been deduced the rules for his nature and behavior---all these he had better be kept well above. If not, then mankind is left with no necessary conclusions about him. Reasons deductions from man and the world as to God will not hold.”The essayists’ output is impressive, 323 pages worth of nuggets. Purchase, read, and share!
