One woman’s journey, a story of self-discovery Malorie Ellsworth’s life is about to change for the better. Or so she believes. Ahead of her lie graduate school and a teaching career; behind her, a traumatic childhood and the turmoil of her parents’ acrimonious divorce. Within weeks of beginning graduate school, she’s enmeshed in a dog-eat-dog academic world, struggling to make a go of it. Unwilling to curry favor to get ahead, devastated by a colleague’s plagiarism of her work, Malorie moves to France, to the village of Flagy, whose landscape and history revive her passion for drawing. When she discovers her talent for garden design, she knows she has found her calling. On her return to the U.S., Malorie develops a career as a garden designer and gains recognition for her innovative, naturalistic work. Meanwhile, she faces the formidable challenges of step-parenting, infertility, and her husband’s battle with Lyme disease. When a former lover reappears, Malorie is forced to revisit a painful episode from her past. With its fine-tuned balance of dialogue, narrative, and description, Minerva’s Fox places the reader at the heart of each scene in this unforgettable account of one woman’s bid to understand herself and make peace with her past.

Less than a year later, her studies and her personal life have fallen apart, and Malorie flees to Flagy, France, hometown of the grandmother she adores. The novel covers the next 23 years during which Malorie finds and develops her career and the relationships that truly matter in her life.Author Kristina Baer has crafted a well-developed story written in exceptional prose that reads like a literary novel. Malorie is a wonderfully authentic protagonist who struggles with issues and questions that affect people no matter what their nationality. She does a particularly good job of portraying the realities of bilingual and bicultural individuals who are often pulled between places and people. To give you an idea of how much I enjoyed the book, I read it on a trip, and I was nearing the end one night when my husband wanted to go to bed in the hotel. I holed up in the bathroom trying to finish it. That, to me, is proof of a good book. (Eventually, I got too tired and the tile floor got too cold. I finished the book the next morning.)

Believable, lovable, Malorie not only survives the dark places of young adulthood but comes out the far end radiant and fulfilled. Every character in this book is bring-home likable. Even Jack-the jerk has a few redemptive moments. A must read that reflects timeless situations done up with love, hope, humor and class.Beverly Corbett, writer, illustrator

Sammet We meet Malorie as a young grad student at a prestigious college in the east. She is floundering. She has a boyfriend, Jack, but she's not quite sure why she is with him. She has a very good idea for a paper and it is stolen from her and at the same time she finds that she is pregnant to her dismay. She ends up miscarrying and never telling Jack. Jack abruptly leaves and that gives her the moment to leave grad school behind. She heads to France where she spent her summers in her childhood and where her grandmother, the beloved Milou lives. In France she gets started in landscape gardening that becomes her true vocation and love. As Malorie grows older we get to know her better. She reconnects with Ted whom she had known in those French summers in Flagy. He is married so though they become friends again as adults they can't become a couple right away. We follow Malorie along in her life, Ted getting back into her life when he and his wife divorce. The book takes you along the road of Malorie's life. You get to know her and like her and want to know more about her, following her trials and difficulties. It is a story well worth reading. For those who like novels by writers like Mary Alice Monroe, Karen White or Debbie Macomber, you will be delighted to spend time with this book. I bought it at a talk by the author. After the talk, I took the book home and thoroughly enjoyed it.
