By Bluerose's Heart I was looking for "fall-y" type books that were also inspiring, and ended up finding The Pumpkin Patch Parable. Very soon afterwards, I heard about this treasury with all the "parable" books by Higgs. I couldn't resist! This book proved to be perfect reading material for us, and will be a seasonal tradition for us now, Lord willing. There's a story to read for each season. The Parable of the Lily is for Spring, with a main focus on Easter, and The Sunflower Parable is one for summer. The Pumpkin Patch Parable is an alternative to Halloween, and really is a special treat. The Pine Tree Parable focuses on Winter, particularly Christmas. After reading The Pumpkin Patch Parable for a fall read, my Grasshopper ended up asking me to read the other three stories, too. He loved the whole book, and especially loved that the same farmer was in all four stories. They all surround the farmer and his family, along with the plants that they grow.As you read through the story, there's Bible verses that coordinates with each page placed at the bottom. I loved this, and tried fitting these verses into the reading a couple of different ways. I felt that reading the story straight through, and then coming back reading the Bible verses worked out best for us. It allowed for more discussion. This book truly is a treasure! We loved it, and highly recommend it! It's a great way to add an inspiring lesson and discussion into each season.*I was provided a review copy, in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Parable Treasury by Liz Curtis Higgs By Zoe @ Blessed and Bewildered My Painful Lesson:I am so grateful that God is forgiving when I do or say stupid things.  Things that are not fully thought through.  Inerrant things.  That is what I had done in this review...I had given approval below for a book which didn't earn it and frankly twisted scripture far out of context.Awhile after I published my review I read a review by Tiffany Malloy at Learning to Love.  Ouch....shame shame shame on me.  I didn't take the time to delve into the scriptures and verify that they were used in context. I just read it to my kids, discussed it in relation to the scripture at the bottom of the page, and went with my general perception.  That is dangerous, misleading, and just plain not what I wish to be advocating on my site.  I'm sorry that I let you down when it came to recommending this book.Words of wisdom from Malloy:“Each of the stories includes verses of Scripture at the bottom, connecting each part of the story to a Scripture verse. While some of the verses work, others are a stretch. I get nervous about using Scripture in this way– pulling it out of context and relating it to something that is completely unrelated. For example, in the Pine Tree Parable, the text on the page says, “The next holiday season brought more neighbors to the farm. The perfect tree was taller than ever.” The Scripture at the bottom? “So the tree was taller than all the other trees in the field. Ezekiel 31:5” Do you know what happens just 5 verses later of that chapter? The wicked tree gets handed over to the enemies for its wickedness and pride, and the foreign nations cuts it down. Whoops! Pretty sure the editors should have thought that one through a little better.”I originally gave this book a 4 star rating.  I have demoted it to 2 stars.  Go and read Malloy's full review.  It is what I wished I would have done in the beginning. Review:The padded hardcover edition of Parable Treasury is a joy to look at. It is beautiful. The stories are sweet and they are illustrated with joyful, colorful, beautiful photos. The typeset is large allowing young readers the joy of reading it to you.The publisher recommends these stories for children ages three to five or three to seven years old depending on the site you are referencing. We all know that those age ranges are flexible. My tests subjects were above the recommended age and so unsurprisingly Parable Treasury didn’t captivate them. My nine-year old is a relatively thoughtful and patient soul though and so he willingly answered my questions that the book naturally brought forward about God; a very positive platform to begin deeper discussions with your child. There is great value in reading this book with your children, even if they are squiggly like my six-year old or just being patient and loving like my nine-year old. Scripture is written throughout the book showing the biblical basis for the story, allowing you to delve deeper into the story behind the story.  The age-old, unchanging, life-giving story. Parable Treasury is a good Christian family story.I received a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. My thanks to the author and publisher. For all of my reviews visit my blog at https://blessedandbewildered.wordpress.com
