Bethard taps into the rich legacy of ranching as a backdrop, taking two young but mature adults who have not yet found what they want, drawing in the reader with tender, funny, and believable scenes and culminates with heart wrenching realities of life, love, fear, disappointment and triumph.Ellen Sadbury becomes Mrs. Bill Wilson in a whirlwind romance, not quite love at first sight, but quickly, and the story gallops. Author Bethard does not wallow in explicit scenes, but gives us the right amount of detail. He won’t even let his raunchiest character, goatee wearing Sam Ballard, finish his sentence “What the ….” We all know a Sam Ballard.Bethard sprinkles concise snippets of his characters’ world view into paragraphs appropriate to the scene. And his cast of characters deals with subjects germane to modern readers: an obstinate teen; prescription drug addiction in a mid-aged woman. Readers are engaged and kept that way. Five Stars!
