I wouldn't recommend this... message is more negative than positive By Treenz This book is the type of book I would be drawn to in a bookstore/library and read as the cover definitely draws me in with the bright and beautiful illustrations throughout. Being a hard cover with a dust jacket always adds that extra stand out also in my opinion. However pick up and read and put back would probably be as far as I would go with this book as I don't like the overpowering theme of it.I must say though that the rhymes in the book are fantastic. So many times you pick up a rhyming book and expect to find the rhymes that are a bit of a stretch and put the rhythm out a bit - this book is not one of them, the rhyming patterns are really excellent and flow so well. I was very impressed by this factor along with the illustrations. While this book is beautifully illustrated and the rhymes are just delightful, I felt the message wasn't right and left me feeling flat about the book despite the positives. In particular I didn't like how it portrayed the whole scenario as a chaotic scene - firstly that isn't Biblical and secondly it robs the awe of the moment by putting a modern day edge on something not at all modern day. Sometimes doing that works for something different but it didn't in this particular story as it cheapened it. In particular I didn't like when the angels were singing "Hosanna" and the mama tells them to be quiet!? Wow... now that's really stretching it. If anything the angels singing at that moment would be far from being classified as 'noise' that would wake the baby. It's almost offensive to insinuate that. If anything the angels singing would have soothed the baby. There wouldn't have been any 'frantic' or 'mama's...in a tizzy' back in those times as those are again, modern day things as a result of the life we live now. This book really doesn't sit well for me at all and therefore I wouldn't recommend it.Please note that Booklook sent me a copy of this for my review - the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

This hard-covered book comes with a dust jacket and vibrant illustrations. The pictures are so rich and beautiful. The colors evoke such a warmth and sweetness. The illustrator, Jane Chapman did a great job.Unfortunately, that's about all I liked about this book. The actual content of the story was just bizarre to me. The story centers around Jesus in the manger. The story of the magnificent and miraculous birth of Christ is reduced to frustrated parents trying to get a baby to sleep. First the animals are being disruptive. Then angels come to praise the new king and Mary tells them to be quite. Three kings show up with gifts for the baby and how does Mary feel about that? "Mama's frantic, in a tizzy."I understand that this is just a storybook. The author has taken creative license and seen the story a new way. However, this isn't just any story, this is the birth of our Savior. She hasn't just changed certain details, she has changed the whole meaning of the story.Being a new mom isn't easy. Certainly there was a lot going on that night. I can imagine that Mary was tired, sore. However the joy of giving birth to her Savior certainly must have outweighed those things. Can you imagine Mary telling the angles to be quite or getting upset at the three kings for coming?!Bottom line, there are tons of great storybooks that retell the birth of Jesus. Why bother with one that misrepresents the story? The great illustrations and rhyming do not save this story in my opinion.I received this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my review

A Sweet, Simple, Rhyming Christmas Story just like Goodnight Ark By Kate-L-B Goodnight Manger by Laura Sassi is Laura's sophomore picture book following her Goodnight Ark. The book is illustrated again by Jane Chapman and the story follows the singsong story rhymes that Goodnight Ark had within it's pages. This time, it's baby Jesus who can't get to sleep. The animals are too noisy and the baby starts to wail. Back and forth the animals try to help Mary and Joseph quiet a squirming, twitching baby. From hay for the baby's head from the donkey, to feathers from the hen. Just when the baby is quieting down, the heavenly angels start singing their Hosannas, and soon he's awake again. Goodness all this noise in the stable! Shepherds arrive along with sheep, then come wise men from far and wide, that baby's sleep will be denied..... Okay, silly rhyme there, but reading the book to write this review had me rhyming myself! Soon Mama Mary suggests a song and all the wise men and shepherds start singing a lullaby that gently lulls baby Jesus to sleep at last. This picture book is quite similar to Goodnight Ark, which I did a review on. As with the Ark, this book is geared towards children 4-8 in my opinion. Parents can read it to their younger children as a lovely Christmas rhyming story, while older children can use it to learn to read marvelous rhyme. And while I enjoyed the book, I did find a couple of the rhymes a bit discordant with the rhythm, as I would have to turn the page to finish the rhyme and it caused too much of a pause. I felt a little jarred and harder to read than Ark. Along with that, while the pictures of the animals, Joseph, the shepherds, and wise men were right on par with Jane Chapman's other work, I was severely disappointed with her portrayal of Mary. All my life I have pictured Mary as being this beautiful woman. I figure if God chose her to carry Jesus and have him as her son, she has to be beautiful. And I think there are absolutely stunning Israeli women. Beautiful women. So to have Mary look very plain and worn out was disappointing. Yes, I know she just had a baby, but well, it doesn't matter about that aspect when illustrating a book. I would have preferred her to look prettier. That is just my opinion. All that being said, this is a lovely rhyme book again. I think it would be a marvelous story to read young children during the month of December to prepare for Christmas. It's sweet and charming enough that I could see children learning the whole rhyme to recite. I would definitely give it 4 out of 5 stars. A little less than Goodnight Ark due to the illustrations and the jarring rhyme. But all in all a very good bookThis book was provided to me free of charge for my honest opinion by HarperCollins Christian Publishing. I have in no way been compensated for my opinions.
