About the Author An author who has had many stories published in the women's weekly magazines and literary journals, John was drawn to writing at an early age. At one time in his teenage years he was reading one book a day---the subject didn't matter, but it needed to grab his interest in the first couple of pages, or he would abandon it. And this is the rule he has since applied to all his writing, believing that if you haven't grabbed the reader straight away, you are not writing well enough.. After graduating with an Honors Degree in History he spent many years in academic publishing, at last leaving to pursue his long-held dream of becoming a writer. "Easily among the very best new writers we have seen", "fresh and original", "creates life-like characters---maybe too life-like" (whatever that means!), are some of the comments made by literary reviewers and consultants about his work. His favourite band is The Moody Blues.

This author has a distinct style of writing that makes his stories stand out. Many of his stories feature strong female characters who are able to turn the odds in their favor. This seems to be the common theme of John M W Smith’s stories. Some of his characters resort to odd tricks in order to get what they desire (be it love or just peace), while others at least learn it’s time to move on. Sometimes you cannot tell which of the two is happening till the very end. These stories are funny and surprising, but many of them also contain little pieces of wisdom without being too serious and preachy. It takes special talent and experience to create such convincing and strong characters using only 6--14 pages (the length of these stories).

By Rudders This is a collection of ten short stories with the classic twist at the end of their impact. Unlike in previous short story anthologies and series from this author, here the stories are slightly longer, and as such the pace has been slowed a little to allow for more complexity and character development. As always, the writing is crisp, sharp, and economical in that not a single word is wasted; succinct and convincing dialogue compliment the narration, and drive each story forward. Anyone who has read any of this author’s previous works will know that he writes strong female character driven stories that might well be perceived as being primarily written for the female market, but as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, the quality of writing does in my opinion give them a much wider appeal. In this particular collection, there are tales of love, sex (with a very small s), and morality, along with healthy doses of mischievous naughtiness and the feel-good factor. This anthology makes for gentle, enjoyable, and intelligent light reading, particularly for fans of the short story genre and unexpected endings. My particular favourite here was the very first story, Social Handicap, which had me grinning and chuckling out loud.Another welcome addition to John M.W. Smith’s portfolio of book series of wacky stories with twist endings.*purchased via Amazon.co.uk hence this review not appearing here as a verified purchase...

Great short stories to make you smile By Lesley Hayes I took this anthology with me on a long trip by train and coach this weekend, and it kept me cheerful and smiling all the way there and back! John M. W. Smith's portrayal of strong, feisty women who sometimes unexpectedly find their way towards empowerment is sure to enliven the mind of any reader, male or female. These aren’t romantic stories, although they focus on the subjects of love and relationships in a genuine way, despite the tongue in cheek quality that brings such amusement to the reading. My favourites were ‘Rona’s Job Interview from Hell’ and ‘Every Dog has its Day’. I so felt for Rona – and loved the twist ending! With the story about Gonzo (the dog who had his day) I expected a different ending, and it kept me guessing right to the final paragraph, which indicates how absorbed I became in it. There wasn’t one story in this collection that disappointed. They are well written, keenly observed, and the author clearly understands female psychology and paints all his characters as utterly believable – no mean feat in a short story of this length. I had already started reading John M.W. Smith’s ‘Layman's Guide to the Meaning of Life and Death’ and will return to it now with increased respect for this author’s work.
