Age-appropriate discussion for children of a difficult topic with a loving, compelling story By Phreaddy There's no upside or sugar coating when it comes to dementia. It's terrible for everyone involved -- the person who becomes ill, the family and friends. For children, it can be especially difficult to understand what's happening to a loved one. I'd recommend this book for any child who has a loved one going suffering from this disease. I like the way it simply and kindly explains what is happening in terms children can understand without any clinical or medical discussion. In fact, the word "dementia" isn't even in the actual text. Even if your family isn't dealing with dementia, I think this book is of value for children. It teaches compassion and kindness -- values I hope my children learn and practice.

The author of "When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember" does just that as she takes Grammy and her granddaughter thru the different emotions and relationships as Grammy progresses thru the different phases of dementia. It touches on empathy in such a natural sweet way that's sure to capture one's heart. This is truly a book that is a must read book for any child experiencing a loved one with any type of dementia. It is realistic but filled with a hopeful message that gives a child the realization that she's still loved in spite of the difficult on-going circumstances.

By Katy Christy When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember is a tender children’s book about how one little girl copes with her grandmother’s gradually increasing dementia. Beautiful illustrations demonstrate the passage of time as the narrator watches her Grammy’s slow demise into confusion. The little girl is encouraged by her mother to remain loving and supportive, finding new ways to continue their close relationship. Full of warmth and love, this story will surely be treasured by children coming to terms with the fact that adults can undergo scary changes.
