12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Get me some Awe! By Jonathan Tripp is a gifted communicator and this book made up of brief chapters all inclining us to desire more awe. In situation after situation we are presented with the truth of an awe problem in our lives. The reasons we dwell in the land of comfortable sins, the priorities we run after, the way we treat others, they are all shaped by our awe and when it is misplaced we are off kilter by a few degrees.The truth is, we were all created for awe. We were all made to be struck by the infinite goodness and glory of God but as a result of the fall of humanity into sin, we skip after awe from lesser sources and they always come up short. Tripp tackles this by thinking through thirteen categories or our lives including our awe amnesia, our tendency toward complaint, materialism, worldview, church, ministry, parenting and our work. In each he reveals the better way of awe, being struck and transformed by the truth of Christ and how it is meant to motivated our living, living in quite a different way than the norm.Tripp is not preachy here, instead he is inviting you to join him in a journey toward awe. “I wrote this book for me because I am aware that I need to spend more time gazing upon the beauty of the Lord. I need to put my heart in a place where it can once again be in awe of the grandeur of God that reaches far beyond the bounds of the most expressive words in the human vocabulary. I need awe of him to recapture, refocus, and redirect my heart again and again.” Me too Paul, me too.The book is a helpful diagnostic for the awe problem of our lives and it is a call to recenter on the glory of God, to stare at the goodness of Jesus until we see it. Those looking for orderly steps of application might be left wanting, but awe is about putting ourselves in places of being wrecked by God’s otherness and kindness toward us, you can’t bootstrap that!I highly encourage you to check out Awe, and ask the Lord to give you an increasing dose of it in your life.

By doremi The first chapters of this book felt so familiar to me as I have heard many sermons by Rick Gamache and John Piper on worship. We are all worshippers. We are created to worship God yet we choose to worship so many other things in place of God. Tripp talks about awe. We are created to behold the beauty of the Lord and to be in awe of God’s grandeur and creation. Yet sadly, our awe is often misplaced. We are awe-amnesiacs. Awe and worship are related in that awe of God will lead us to worship Him who is truly worthy. This book goes further by showing how awe impacts our ministry, worldviews, parenting, church lives, and even our work.I especially appreciated the chapter on parenting. Tripp says, “When our children are blown away by the glory of God, they will be predisposed to reach out for his grace and submit to his will” (location 442). That’s what I want for my kids. He goes on to say that it’s not odd to talk about God every day to your kids, it would be “positively unnatural” not to. “You can’t get up in the morning without bumping into God. Every day it’s God here, God there, God over there and there and there” (location 1802). Yet our kids, like us, are growing up and being trained by the world to look at the glories around them and NOT see God. Please God, help me change that in my home and in my life!I was convicted about living a two-drawer existence….putting everything about my real life in one drawer and the spiritual things of life in another drawer. My faith and awe should be so much a part of my every day, real life that it would be unable to be separated into separate categories or drawers.Every single thing that stirs awe in us is meant to point us to God, the creator. It should also remind us of our real home and the immeasurable awe that awaits us when we will see Jesus face to face.Tripp writes in a compelling, easy to understand way. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Awe Truly Matters By Zach Barnhart What if we could nail down all of our struggles, all of our mishaps, all of our efforts to one small word? In his newest book, long-time pastor and counselor Paul Tripp has proposed that perhaps we can. At the root of every one of these issues can be traced back to the problem of awe. “Whatever has captured the awe of my heart,” Tripp says, “will also set the agenda for the things that I desire, think, choose, say, and do.” God is the embodiment of awe. Awe is such a glorious thing to be caught up in. Given these truths, it’s essential we get awe right. It pervades every piece of life. Tripp has labored to show us the necessity of living life in awe of God and His glory.The thing I love most about Paul Tripp and this book (and every other book he’s written, for that matter) is the way he communicates through his words. It’s like you can hear him speaking the words off the page as you read them, like he’s sitting across the table from you and conversing with you. He’s not afraid to be honest with you but he communicates with such care for the soul. It’s refreshing to read a book like Awe and know Tripp has loved readers like me enough to not pull punches, yet help us dive into the grace and goodness of God.Another thing I love about Tripp’s writing is how inventive he is in giving us terminology to process ways of living and thinking. He began to share about how difficult the early days of ministry were for him, and how many times he considering hanging it up entirely. Then, for what was probably the hundredth time, he read Psalm 145:4. Only this time, the text leapt off the page with new meaning to him. He comments:That was exactly what I needed. It immediately hit me that every moment of ministry must contribute to this goal…I know that in ministry I will be preaching, teaching, and encouraging people who are awe forgetful, awe discouraged, awe empty, awe deceived, awe seduced, awe kidnapped, and awe weary. My job is to give them eyes to see the awesome glory of God…it is my job to connect this glory to the everyday experience of the hearer in a way that engages the heart and transforms the life…I am called to inspire awe intentionally.Pastors and church leaders, we are called as well to help our people fall into utter awe of the glory of God. More than that, we as Christians of any vocation are called to worship in the splendor of His holiness. Tripp makes it clear-cut and simple for us. “You will be in awe of what you think will give you life.”One last thing I love about Awe is that, in typical Tripp fashion, we are left with a host of golden nuggets, tweetable lines that easily stick with us. He doesn’t give us sound-bite theology, but succinct phrasing to express big ideas. He leaves us oftentimes with simple words of wisdom to help us stand firm in healthy awe of Jesus. He’s written a pastoral, stretching, comforting, and God-glorifying handbook for helping us get back to the fundamentals of the faith. He’s provided us encouragement in living the Christian life.
