This book serves as a comprehensive introductory guide to the practical aspects of risk assessment. Chapters include clearly defined objectives and summaries. The book includes: hazard identification, dose-response, exposure assessment, risk characterization, chemical mixtures, epidemiology, emerging issues and global perspectives with accessible language. The book concludes with a set of hypothetical case studies.

Toxicological Risk Assessment for Beginners aims not to create an expert, but rather to provide readers with their first understanding of the risk assessment topic. This book was designed with the student in mind. We simplify a complex process for beginners and balance theory with practical aspects, but remain fluid enough to increase difficulty with case studies. By incorporating an action based, step by step approach to learning the risk assessment process, this book provides its readers with an elementary understanding of how the risk assessment process is initiated, developed and finished, making it a valuable guide for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and early career scientists in industry.

By Wix Simon Review of “Toxicological Risk Assessment for Beginners,” Torres and Bobst, Eds.As the author of another textbook on risk assessment, I was asked by one of the editors to take a look at this one. I think this book is very well-suited to the current group of students studying risk assessment. A broad perspective is obtained from having different authors for each of the different chapters. My recent experience teaching risk assessment is that students of this discipline in 21st century enjoy a diversity of backgrounds; many of them have not been trained in the hard sciences or engineering but rather in public health policy or history. “Toxicological Risk Assessment for Beginners” is directly at such a mixed group of students. Each of the chapters provided a contribution and the effort was well-curated. The chapter that I thought struck exactly the right tone was Chapter 3 on dose-response. The material was presented in an easy-to-understand fashion and without too much detail. Some readers might think Chapter 4 on exposure suffered from being excessively focused on industrial hygiene but it nonetheless provided a clear and simple explanation of the basics of exposure assessment. Chapter 8 on emerging issues filled in very nicely some of the questions left unanswered by the preceding chapters.Especially useful for beginners were the final two chapters on skills development and case studies. When I learned risk assessment, I was working at an EPA regional office and learned by reading the many EPA guidance documents. How much easier it would have been if this book had been available! The value of the focus on skills development gives students a path forward if sufficiently interested in pursuing risk assessment as a career. The case studies provide the opportunity to practice the skills learned.I taught a graduate class in environmental risk assessment in 2014 and could have used this book. It wasn't available then. I had some very committed students who had not taken a science class since eighth grade. Many students these days seem to be choosing policy as their field but still need to know about risk assessment and risk-based decisions. This book is for them.Five starsTed W. By RAJIV BALYAN During my doctoral program, I took multiple toxicology courses and read ‘Bible’ of toxicology by Casarett and Doull (as we called it in grad school). Still, I felt that concepts of risk assessment are not clear to me, when I entered the job market. I needed something that could prepare me for risk assessment job. ‘Toxicological risk assessment for beginners’ by Torres and Bobst is a very useful and handy book, written in a simple and lucid language making the concepts easy to grasp. It touches all important topics including hazard identification, dose response, risk characterization, epidemiology, emerging issues, resources and finally some case studies to provide hands on experience. Must read of anybody planning to work in toxicology area.
