A Northwest brew pub, a historic house, trouble with the local American Indian community, and unexpected attention from the biggest country music star ever to come out of Nashville. It's going to be a tough summer for Bess in the free-thinking, left-leaning, soy-eating, fish-loving town of Port Heron. American mythologies collide in a novel that's part love story, part modern politics, and part historical saga. Sharply observed but big-hearted, it's also a whole lot of fun.

Review "Charming, lovely, funny and sad." - Portland Book Review"[S]tarts out blithely, with a dash of snarky charm . . . delivers plenty of entertainment value with thoughtful social commentary." - Barbara Lloyd McMichael, The Bookmonger

About the Author Heather Lockman, born and raised in Seattle, is a fourth-generation Northwesterner. Her essays and articles have appeared in a variety of national publications, including American Heritage, National Geographic Traveler, and Architectural Digest. She once spent two years rescuing and restoring a landmark Northwest pioneer home and opening it to the public—an experience that provided the backdrop for her first novel, The Indian Shirt Story. Heather lives in a restored Craftsman bungalow near Puget Sound with her husband and a dog named Woody. She cooks at the local soup kitchen, conducts tours of the Washington State Governor’s Mansion, and—in defiance of Northwest stereotype—listens to country music. Mostly, though, she writes. Finally, a worthy addition to the Pacific Northwest regional oeuvre By ld67 Small-town historians, cranky old ladies, helicopter parents, and country music singers are easy pickings for caricaturists. What's much harder is to write about them in a way that is keenly observed, yet compassionate. That's exactly what Heather Lockman has done in this wry and wonderful novel. She understands the inner lives of her characters, and while she conveys the humor--and even absurdity--of their quirks, she writes about them respectfully, digging past stereotypes to show us their humanity. The result is a book that, unlikely many contemporary novels, is filled with characters readers will care about and identify with. And although any lover of literary fiction will relish this book, The Indian Shirt Story is also a welcome and needed addition to Pacific Northwest literature. For those of us fortunate enough to live here, it's a reminder of what makes this place special and worth caring for. Lockman is no velvet-rope historian: she has no wish for things to revert to the mythical days of yore. She is clear-eyed about history's flaws and foibles in a way reminiscent of Timothy Egan's writings on subjects like the Dust Bowl and Theodore Roosevelt, and the eponymous Indian shirt story illustrates this beautifully. Her deep affection for everyday people and the place and time they inhabit shimmers on every page of this warmhearted novel.

Heather Lockman's keen eye for detail, her vivid characterizations, and the rather capricious story line make this book a treat. From the descriptions of the tedium of a school field trip, to the endearing antics of Ellie, the Labrador retriever, to the fevered devotion of the country star's fans, the author gives us vignettes that are at once ordinary and profound.Lockman mixes it up with visits to the rez, breakfast at the assisted care facility, and the unmitigated joy of hooking a 26 pound salmon. Presiding over it all is the ambiguous presence of the Pioneer Mother, a monumental bronze statue in the town square.Written with a light touch and peopled with quirky characters, this book sweeps the reader along. The multi-layered final chapters bring the tale to a highly satisfying conclusion.

I think most people who enjoy history understand the stories we learn may not be what actually happened but it was interesting to hear different versions of the Indian Shirt story from disparate points of view. It was eye opening to me. I could really identify with Bess and her frustrations which were handled with a knowing touch by the author. The Indian Shirt Story describes the effect on Beth's job, husband, and community when a celebrity comes to town and she finds herself smack in the middle of trying to manage the chaos. I enjoyed the book thoroughly. A good read.
