Health and sustainability have become ubiquitous topics in all realms of popular discourse. What these discussions often overlook is the fact that the two concepts are interrelated, and that their surrounding policies and practices can often inform and reinforce each other. As sustainability measures are already in place across many levels of government, there is now an opportunity to extend these principles to improve health care and health care policy. Health and Sustainability: An Introduction details how the values of sustainability can be applied to the design of health systems and the delivery of primary care. By providing a practical framework for understanding complicated sustainability problems related to health, the book offers an authoritative resource for understanding: - health and environmental rights- parallels between human toxicology and ecotoxicology- how health promotion strategy can be a template for sustainability- health science and how it can be used to support decisions in health and sustainability- how scientific knowledge is achieved, understood, accepted, and used in health and environmental advocacy, and how this relates to sustainabilityStudents and practitioners in health will benefit from this introduction to sustainability, and those in sustainability and environmental studies will benefit from this application to human health. Health and Sustainability offers a roadmap for successfully integrating these approaches for healthier people and environment.

Health and Sustainability: An Introduction, by Tee L. Guidotti

Review "Most of today's references to 'sustainable practices' underrepresent the true depth of the global problems we face. Tee Guidotti's new book gets serious about sustainability, defining it as simply 'balancing what is taken and what is given.' What comes into focus is how sustainability and health are forever linked, and that substantive change is needed before global health is irrevocably affected." -- William Leiss, PhD, McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment, University of Ottawa

"A timely book. The task of recharting a course to a sustainable future is great, urgent, and formidable. A clear understanding of the 'health and sustainability' relationship - and in particular that attaining environmental and social sustainability has enormous consequences for human wellbeing, happiness, health and survival - is essential." -- Anthony J. McMichael, from the foreword

"This book may be Professor's Guidotti's opus given that it sums up and extends his eclectic and significant contributions over many years. This is a very useful reference." --DOODY'S

Book Review for Health and Sustainabilty : An Introduction By Brett Dr. Tee Guidotti’s book is a thought provoking and timely book for anyone with concerns about the sustainability of human society and the general overall health of our planet. “Health and Sustainability: An Introduction” avoids editorialization and politicization of the issues surrounding environmental sustainability. Instead, the book utilizes a rich and nuanced historical perspective of the origins of both environmental sustainability and public health to give the reader a better understanding of how these two fields relate to each other today and cannot be considered as separate from each other. In order to accomplish this, the book first discusses the history of the concept of the sustainability. This helps to provide a frame of reference of what sustainability means and how the quality of our own developed human civilization fits into the equation. Health is similarly examined in terms of its evolution from the individual provision of medical treatment of disease only, into the development of public health measures to prevent disease in populations. Furthermore, as our understanding of ecological systems matures the book illustrates how the maintenance of natural ecosystems is a key part of developing sustainable public health programs. From this foundation, Dr. Guidotti provides a perspective for being able to move forward in the public discussion towards building a more sustainable natural environment while simultaneously continuing to make inroads on improving public health. What constitutes scientific fact for the different involved parties that make up this discussion is examined, including the general public, environmental activists, the business community, the scientific community, and legislators. An examination of what constitutes “junk science” and examples of pitfalls that occur when facts are misrepresented is reviewed. The importance of messaging issues is also discussed in terms of the financial, social, and environmental impact moving towards a sustainable society. Specific subjects are also addressed on where environmental sustainability and public health are particularly intertwined including : climate change, our evolving concepts of what constitutes pollution and contamination, human population growth, the economics of energy policy, and the harvesting of natural products in the environment for human consumption. The concept of sustainable artificial ecosystems is also discussed including the sustainability and health of the home and work environment, agricultural land use, and urban ecosystems. Lastly the book provides a thoughtful reflection of the role that spirituality has come into play on environmental sustainability and how it is currently shaping our thoughts on the matter. Careers in environmental sustainability and health are also reviewed which should be of interest for readers at any stage in their careers.“Health and Sustainability: An Introduction” is a rewarding, thought provoking book for anyone regardless of their own personal beliefs on the role that environmental sustainability should play in our society. The captivating historical examples used throughout the book make it easy to read and very aptly illustrate complex ideas. It is well organized and specific subjects are easily referenced. Health providers, public health professionals, and policy makers will also find this an invaluable reference source.Brett Perkison MD, MPH, FACOEM
