Review ''The Sabbath Experiment invites readers to discover the place Sabbath can have in contemporary culture. Claiming Sabbath-keeping is both a discipline and a gift, Muthiah opens up this countercultural practice biblically, historically, theoretically, and personally. Each chapter elegantly articulates one aspect of the practice while offering the opportunity to slow down and reflect on one s life . . . [T]his book is accessible, well-written, practical, and a gift to the church.'' Terri Elton, Associate Professor of Leadership, Luther Seminary; Secretary/Treasurer, Academy of Religious Leadership, Journal of Religious Leadership''In a culture that honors busyness, the accumulation of stuff, and homage to personal preferences, Sabbath is not just anachronistic, it is a threat. So maybe it s God s gift, aimed at converting us toward lives that are relationally, ethically, and spiritually graced. Muthiah lures us into experiments, Bible narratives, personal reflections, and church conversations so that we can be disciplined into freedom and freed into new capacities for contentment, generosity, and love.'' Mark Lau Branson, Homer Goddard Professor of Ministry of the Laity at Fuller Theological Seminary; author of Memories, Hopes and Conversations and (with Juan Martínez) Churches, Cultures and Leadership --Wipf and Stock Publishers

By DL It is so easy to read the biblical accounts of the Sabbath and think only of the legalism of the Pharisees and their conflict with Jesus and his disciples. We might make the mistake of assigning the Sabbath command to the law, saying that we live under grace. The Sabbath Experiment leads us to understand that the Sabbath remains today as a means through which God desires to bless us. Sabbath observance presents an opportunity to know God’s goodness. It presents an opportunity to see consumerism for what it is and to grow in contentment and the understanding that God is the only true source of our fulfillment. It calls us to reflect on the truth that God loves us for who we are, not what we have. Sabbath is about honoring God, blessing others, and receiving the blessing God has waiting for us as we learn to rest in him. As we learn this truth on the Sabbath, it will permeate the other days of our week as well.

A Wonderful Book By Annaka Sikkink The Sabbath Experiment is a concise (100-ish pages), easy-to-read, gentle (yet powerful) reminder of what Sabbath has been in millennia past, and what it can/could (really should) be for me/us today. The author presents a beautifully encouraging invitation for people like me -- average Janes and Joes who have seen Sabbath slip further and further from relevance and practice in our lives. It's not a one-Sabbath-fits-all book. But it does delve into both the Old Testament and New Testament to unpack how and why fitting time for Sabbath is important. The author is a Professor of Practical Theology. And, this is a practical book! It includes thoughtful discussion questions and meditations as well. If you are reading this post, you are looking for some guidance. Here is my guidance to you -- read the book! Wrestle with it. The book arrived this week. I read it so fast that I have yet to "experiment" -- but I will.

Horne Reading the Sabbath Experiment caused me to admit my puritanical view of Sabbath keeping which basically boiled down to, “don’t have any fun on Sunday”. The Sabbath Experiment is an invitation to rediscover the amazing gift God has given us in celebrating Sabbath keeping. The book is practical, but also provides a thorough theological foundation. It’s accessible, but doesn’t lack depth of insight. It’s inviting and winsome, but also not afraid to challenge our cultural Christianity. My small group is currently using this as our weekly study and the discussion questions have been great. I also think it could be a wonderful resource for a church-wide “Sabbath Celebration”. My own frenzied pace and the culture of craziness around me makes me hungry to experience the truth of the Sabbath Experiment each week.
