Shadow of Doubt is the story of Ansley Sheridan, a former ballerina who starts life over and becomes an attorney after the failure of her marriage. In the course of events, Ansley meets and enters into an on-again-off-again, secret relationship with a popular British actor. As the romance develops, she is haunted by the betrayal of her former husband and struggles to reconcile her magnetic attraction to Nick Colton with her lack of faith in men and marriage. Scenes laced with humor, heartbreak, and suspense provide the reader with a range of emotions as Ansley deals with the consequences of her lack of ability to trust love.

It was written, but not published, before Downton Abbey came about on television. Ansley and Nick remind me of two of the Downton characters. Ansley and a daughter in Downton are both proper, conscientious, nice to look at, secretive and doubtful. Both had husbands whom they loved and lost them under entirely different circumstances. Both secretly spend time away with a man they are seeing and are doubtful that marrying this man would make for a good marriage. Nick lives in an English manor home that reminds one of Downton Abbey's splendor, comfort and staff. Nick is as polished for his time as the Master of Downton is for his time. Both Masters of their estate have demanding responsibilities to their work. Nick to the theatre and the Master of Downton to maintaining Downton Abbey's financial upkeep and social standing. The love scenes are big time vivid. No matter where they took place and how they played out you could see it, right down to taking the grass out of Ansley's hair and straightening her sweater after an encounter in the outdoors. The psycho Langston was right on it. Totally out of reality, but at the same time convincingly normal to the psychologist. You have probably seen Mark's supposedly high class bimbo at least once in your lifetime. Erwin's description of the bimbo "one layer of lipstick short of a hooker" is priceless.Judith Erwin's writing in Shadow of Doubt holds your attention down to the last line of the book.

One book that keeps your interest from beginning to end and hard to put down. Knowing Judy personally and watching this story come alive was thrilling to me. Ansley's character is easy to relate to and her personality, vulnerability and determination are attributes we all want. A great read.
