Raised in a family where love means caring and sharing, Johanna is a successful, career-focused, who considers herself intelligent and well-educated. Louis is the youngest detective in the police force, takes part in triathlons, and eats multi-color vegetables with his lunch. Two ordinary people with both feet planted firmly on the ground, they get married believing in happily ever after. But two consecutive unplanned pregnancies, an affair, and Louis’ bizarre behaviour, quickly weaken their matrimonial rink. Johanna files for divorce and what started as a beautiful relationship, turns into complete chaos because Louis is not the forgiving type, and Johanna is tired of turning the other cheek. Add to the mix a conniving mother-in-law, a few determined “professionals” and a system not quite equipped for such games. What could possibly go wrong? By turns, Unsung Victims is amusing and tragic as it takes you on a roller-coaster ride through the highs and lows of divorce and all the foolishness surrounding it.

For me this book felt so real, so heart-wrenching, that I felt Johanna White could be a real person and I was reading her biography.I watched her relationship with Detective Louis White blossom and become the envy of many women. Everything was so perfect. Louis was the man any woman’s romantic heart would desire. Until his other side began to come through. Then I watched the marriage crumble, and Louis become a nightmare to live with. When Johanna decided she wanted a divorce, he did what many abusive people do. He begged for another chance. I could feel how torn she was, but I really hoped she wouldn’t take that route. Logic told me it was too risky, but little did she (or I) realise how risky sticking with her decision would be.All Louis’s charm totally vanished, and a sadistic, vengeful man who would stop at nothing less that ruining Johanna’s life took center stage. He portrayed her as having poor parenting skills and made everyone (including herself) doubt her stability and sanity. And he used his influence and power to try to gain sole custody of their children with the intent to shut her out of their lives entirely. It became clear that the children didn’t really matter to him, they were simply a means of destroying the woman who dared to try to take back control of her life. The unsung victims were the poor children. Divorce affects children at any age, but this book clearly portrays what a vicious, acrimonious divorce can do to young children. My heart bled for them and Johanna. It became very easy to despise Louis and those that marshalled behind him in his underhanded deceitful ways.Johanna’s story is written in first person, and once again Ica Iova did a masterful job of creating and developing the characters in this book. This is the 3rd book that I have read of Ica Iova—she has become one of my favorite authors. I have already downloaded “Resilience” (the sequel to this book) and I can’t wait to read it.

Changing the Victim Status By Author Stephanie Parker McKean Ica Iova’s “Unsung Victims” gets five stars for its honest, incisive look into a legal system that is intended to protect victims, but that can be hijacked by those who have money, power, or authority.Anyone can become a victim through no fault of their own, but as “Unsung Victims” demonstrates through a gripping story, anyone can also choose to quit being victimized. When Johanna and Louis marry, life seems perfect. They are quickly gifted with two children, daughter Athena and son Aidan. Johanna is at the top of her career and never expects money issues to surface when she quits her job to take care of their children. Louis, also, has just received a promotion.Because this is not a perfect world and evil hides beneath a veneer of beautiful, Jo’s world begins to crumble two years into the marriage. The veneer slips and Jo discovers she married a bully. Louis’ campaign of attrition doesn’t stop with controlling the money. His mental and physical assaults on her send Jo to the hospital emergency room. After he attempts to run over her with his vehicle and parades an affair in front of her – Louis turns his abuse toward Athena. When Jo leaves him and files for a divorce, things get uglier because Louis is a police officer and knows how to ignore the law and how to work the law in his favor.Jo wants to protect their innocent children from being victimized. With the legal system at her ex-husband’s command, this seems impossible. She is threatened with losing custody of the children.Jo seeks God’s intervention and reaches deep inside to find a source of victory that she never suspected was there. She realizes that anyone can become a victim through no fault of his or her own – but remaining a victim is a choice. In an angst-filled courtroom battle, Jo wins a victory for herself and her children. Or…has she? Is the nightmare really over?

Excitement fills her as she explains to her best friend what's happened. If only she could find a good man settle down and in a few years, have children. Her life has been so busy she hasn't had time to date. Johanna's friend Marie sets her up on a blind date. Johanna had been on blind dates before and wasn't looking forward to another one. On that particular night Johanna's life takes on new dimensions. Terrific writing and very defined characters will make you want to dive right in. It's romantic, loving, kind and wonderful. It's also dark, scary and evil. You'll need the tissues for this book. It really pulls at the heart strings. I enjoyed the fact this book takes on a subject we don't see often enough. The book will make you pause and reflect on friends and family. I became attached to Johanna, rooting for her all the way. Get this book and see how wonderful it really is. I did find one issue. The last chapter in the book starts out like it's going to wind things up. I found it left me hanging. I had so many questions when I closed the book the final time. I gave this one 4 cheers out of 5 because of the way it ended. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
