Amidst all this, Maureen befriends a woman called Judith and although she has a chequered past, Judith brings a sense of humour and friendship into their lives. Karina marries Rupert Millbrook, whose family span generations and are so influential that the town is named after them. Karina soon discovers that once you marry a Millbrook, you marry the family and its history. Karina soon becomes Managing Director of Millbrook's IT and Maureen’s boss. However, Karina’s life is not without it’s own difficulties and she soon finds herself struggling with her teenage children and the issues they bring. Rupert has his own problems. Decent Book By Melissa "The Other Side of Town" is essentially a tale about families, friends, secrets, grief and moving on in life.I have to be honest with everyone here; I was only lukewarm about this book. I felt that for the most part the book kept my attention however there were a few aspects in this story that prevented me from enjoying it to the book's full potential. What I did enjoy about this novel was that Smythe clearly demonstrated that appearance isn't always what it seems to be - A person may appear on top of everything but inside they are falling apart at the seams. Furthermore, Smith illustrated that money doesn't buy happiness. Rich or poor, we all have our own problems in life. Additionally, I liked the fact that in the end Maureen 'Mo' learned that holding on to bitterness can be a destructive force in one's life. I believe that is a lesson that many people have had to learn the hard way. That being said, there were certain aspects of this novel that I did not enjoy:**I found all of the characters to be depressing and caustic - I know the characters were supposed to be bitter and angry in this novel but I found it to be too much; it got a bit grating after awhile.**Too much happening at once - I felt this novel had too many plotlines converging at once. Personally, I believed this factor to be a distraction and it also became work to keep track of the characters.**The Cover - The cover could use a reworking in order to fit with the story. I am still unsure what the picture is supposed to represent in the story's context.Overall, this was a decent book; it did hold my attention somewhat and included a few factors that I did enjoy. Nevertheless, I just couldn't find myself fully immersed into the story. I believe that as a reader, I lacked the passion or interest in the story that would mark this 4 or 5 stars however, for a debut novel, "The Other Side of Town" is a promising start.

So I took a chance on it.There is only one review up that I can see on Good reads so I had nothing much to compare it with and weigh up if I would be able to keep to my postings of between 3-5 stars.I am so very glad I that I can fall back on my 4 years of reviewing for books and chose wisely.Now....why did I say this? Its because I do like to keep to a genre I am comfortable with and not have to mark authors books down if I can help it.I had no problem with this one.A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOKI thought it started out rather slow at first. Lots of family things and surrounding bits that you gradually piece together to make an entire piece.I think the most part that intrigued me was the part about Emma, the daughter who was killed. She was killed by a hit and run driver, BMW.To imagine what this mother, this family went through is so sad, and I tried to put myself in their place. Would I rest not knowing who had done this? Could I rest not knowing who did this. They do not live in a huge town, they live in a small populated town, so how hard, how difficult could it be to not be able to trace who did it. How many BMW'S are out there in that town. Who is hiding something? My thoughtsThere is a lot more to this book than I want to tell you because its so very well written. So well put together. Its not "up there" edge of your seat "fantastic" but its a pretty good well woven story that I had no trouble at all keeping with. No trouble at all wanting to keep reading at every chance I could get throughout my day.My personal downfall1. It needs to be looked at for Mobi/ebook format as its too spaced out. We have dropped paragraphs which are not compact. The author uses oOo for spacing between chapters, except on several occasions they are at the end of a sentence or paragraph which is a little annoying. Its only a small adjustment in spacing that needs to be done, width etc and it will be a great compacted book with "proper" laid out pages as if you are reading from a physical book.I mention this as it may be picked up by others and will affect sales. So its meant in a kind way.2. Personally, I am not that keen on the cover. However, that is only MY opinion and may not be held by others. My complete verdict is, that personally I enjoyed the read, I think if this is her first book?? she has done exceptionally well. I am not a judge and jury on anything, just based on what I like, what I read, how many books I read per year and what I come against with other Indie/self published authors, so based on that. Those are my thoughts. :)

By Cassandra S *I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The Other Side of Town is a book that is so true to life and in so many ways. The differences of the “have” and the “have-nots” are made clear in this book. The use of power, positively and negatively, are also included. It is also a heart-wrenching story of young love and dealing with the aftermath. I loved this book! Every time I had to put it down, I was waiting desperately for the next time that I could pick it back up. While I'm not crazy about the cover, the writing is done well and the story comes together in a beautiful way that will touch your heart…plus a huge twist that through me for a complete loop!Absolutely a 5 STAR book!!
