In his late teens he studied law in Paris and worked as a court administrator. He didn’t start to paint until 1889 at age 20. What started that? His mother bought him art supplies to help him pass the time while he recovered from an attack of appendicitis. He says at that time he discovered “A KIND OF PARADISE”.QUESTIONS FOR KIDS TO CONSIDER: Have you discovered a paradise in some art activity you’ve done? What does it feel like? Now let’s look at some of Matisse’s paintings, taking time to enjoy all their special features. Painting #1 is among his most famous: “Woman Reading.” But you mostly see her back, and she’s dressed in dark clothes. What stands out? What do you see on top of the furniture? Do you feel anything like this girl seems to feel as you read?Ask these kinds of questions for all the paintings. Many are still life. But what about Painting #6 (Woman with a Hat)? And #12 “Portrait of Madame Matisse). Do you feel that Mrs. Matisse was pleased with this portrait? Why or why not? Look at other paintings of people in this collection. How are they alike or different? There’s much for children to enjoy in these paintings. It’s important not to rush through them but to let observers OBSERVE and assimilate the art’s impact on them.

He painted forty years longer and created his "Jazz" movement (he called it painting with scissors), dark landscapes with white borders, and colorful landscapes but less overcolor than the fauves (of which he was a founding member. The fauves were started circa 1902 and got their name from an art critic that said the heavy colours looked like they had been painted by wild beasts (fauves). The movement slowed in France about 1908 but returned in Britain, America, and Canada in subsequent decades. His use of colour was so remarkable than when he was sick Picasso was cited as saying "when Matisse dies only Chagall will remain as the one artist truly understanding the use of colour." Reviewers disagree on placement but almost all would have him on their top 10 list of 20th century painters and most rank him top 5. These images of his fauve period are a wonderful sight to behold and costs less than a dollar. Great intro to Mattisse's art....shu
