Review "The connection made in this book between leadership and non-violence is extremely important. Many leaders have employed violence or cruelty to achieve their ends but Monty Roberts has gone in the opposite direction and shows how true leadership is about the development of trust (whether between a human and an animal or between humans) and encouraging those around one to reach their full potential. Everybody could benefit from absorbing the practices outlined in this book."-Andrew Rowan, Chief Scientific Officer for The Humane Society of the United States.
From the Author We wrote this book to be useful on three fronts: to define and examine the nature of trust, to look at the implications for managing and leading others at work, and to offer specific ways to grow into a more trusting and trustworthy leader. But we are approaching this in a unique way. We are using a live case study featuring a leader who has carved a career as an entrepreneur, who continues to work full-time as a hands-on expert into his late 70's, and who has led one the most massive, largely unpublicized cultural transformations in the history of horse training. That man is the Horse Whisperer, Monty Roberts, The New York Times bestselling author who has quietly influenced the way that many have come to think of training horses. Through his first book, The Man Who Listens to Horses, Monty launched an international debate about the role that violence plays in training horses. His message has stretched across the globe, but the beginnings of his discoveries date back to his childhood. As the work world advances into a time with the most diverse workforce in history, facing the most complex information age of all time, there exists a core concern: what type of leadership is needed? One answer can be found by looking at the needs of the next generation of leaders. Young developing leaders are coming into their roles incredibly well-equipped in technical and functional skills. But many of them need an accelerated course in how to manage, influence, partner and collaborate with people. That's where Monty comes in. He not only offers a real-life example of what a trusting and trustable leader is within his own organization, he teaches trust all over the world. This transfer of concepts to humans keeps echoing back from his work with horses. This is what we paid attention to during our study of leadership. We offer, through Monty's own work and the applicable work of others, a different way to understand the value of trust in the workplace. We hope that you enjoy the stories, and see the value in the themes taken from Monty's equine world. Dr. Susan Cain and Debbie Roberts-Loucks March, 2015

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and one great mentor, Monty Roberts By Ken Consulting Horse Sense for Leaders Do I trust my boss? Or, as a boss do I trust my team? If the answer is “No” to either of these I might want to read a new book giving me a whole new look at how we humans are hard-wired to interact with others. Including in our jobs. And learn about how and WHY we can change. For that we can thank hundreds of people and horses. Oh, and one great mentor, Monty Roberts, world recognized as the “Man Who Listens to Horses.” From horses Monty learned that trust-based relationships are critical to success. Turns out the same is true in human relationships. In this new Debbie Roberts-Loucks and Dr. Susan Cain book we get a compilation of Monty’s concepts plus WHY they work. While they focus on leadership, they’re also about life. And how we can build better relationships. Monty teaches “Join Up” as the first step in creating trust bonds with horses. Imagine what it does with people! After a lifetime of sharing his non-violent horse training knowledge, today Monty’s belief in non-violence has inspired legions of followers who not only agree with his principles, they now live them. Among those are HRM Queen Elizabeth II, myriad horses, leaders from the international corporate world, a host of damaged returning veterans and thousands of us learners. The life and leadership lesson Monty discovered is this: “For centuries, humans have said to horses,' you do what I tell you or I’ll hurt you.' Humans still say that to each other, still threaten, force, and intimidate. I’m convinced that my discovery with horses also has value in the workplace, in the educational and penal systems and in raising children. At heart, I'm saying no one has the right to say, “you must” to an animal, or to another human.” Ken JohnsonNewspaper and magazine Publisher and owner. Author. Writer. Grand Junction, Colorado
