About the Author Elinor Glyn was a British writer best known for pioneering mass-market women s erotic fiction and popularizing the concept of the It Girl, which had a profound influence on 20th century popular culture and the careers of Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow. In addition to her work as a scriptwriter for silent movies, Glyn was one of the earliest female directors. Elinor Glyn s elder sister was fashion designer Lady Duff-Gordon, who survived the tragic sinking of the Titanic. Over the duration of her career Glyn penned more than 40 works including such titles as Three Weeks, Beyond the Rocks, and Love s Blindness. Elinor Glyn died in 1943.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining Novel from 1911 By Carmel R. Countess Zara is recently widowed and poor. She has a half brother that she is responsible for and her uncle persuades her to marry a man she doesn't know so that this half brother will be taken care of with her uncle's riches. But she is very much against the marriage and considers it to be a degradation to sell herself in this way. She is also highly traumatized by the abusive relationship with her first husband and does not like men. Enter the hero! The cultivated aristocrat Tristram Tancred who has agreed to marry Zara because he has fallen for her at first sight, not for monetary reasons as she believes!The time span of this novel is a few weeks and basically chronicles the honeymoon and after, and Tristram's disappointment to discover that his wife hates him and thinks he is a brutish animal! I found this novel to be a fun and fast read, with a great deal of the token Glyn histrionics in almost every scene. I liked the hero and his interest in "reasoning things out" and confronting problems by trying to imagine his wife's perspective as well as analyzing his own. I also like it when characters from authors' other novels pop up randomly in books, and this one makes brief mention of Hector and Theodora from Glyn's Beyond the Rocks. The "Crow" from Beyond the Rocks also shows up here as a peripheral character.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. CAMPY, HILARIOUS, SLIGHTLY FASCIST AND GREAT ROMANCE!!!!! By alltatup I read this novel years back and never forgot it. Published in 1911, it was scandalous for its time, juicily titillating and a hoot to read today. Glyn had a somewhat fascistic view of classes and human types, which some of her characters discuss quite frequently: for her, the ideal specimen is the English aristocrat who has rightfully ruled in England for hundreds of years. In spite of her snobbish and at times fascist beliefs (which are surpisingly contradicted by the implication that the English aristocracy needs a bit of "foreign" [read Jewish!] blood injected into it in order to be renewed), or perhaps because of the book's snobbishness, it is loads of fun to read the story of love, mystery, tragedy, and horniness finally satisfied at the very end. If you're looking for a super-fun read that makes you giggle at its silliness and yet enthralls you with its romance, THIS IS IT!!!

It seemed as if the misunderstanding, pride and general ignorance of the main characters was going to go on forever. It also lacked the shrewd wisdom often present in Red Hair.However, there was a quality of theater about this story that somehow made me see it playing out as a black and white 1940s film complete with the debonair polished actors and lovely actresses of that time. I could always see the elegant costuming and amazing sets. The characters had the dramatic personal qualities one would expect in an old movie. Very entertaining story for that reason and a few cuts above most modern romance novels. More Elinor Glyn, please.
