Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the ice. Pushed into the sport by his alcoholic father, Alex isn't afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn't so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves. As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people like Alex, who's been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the Fury's effort to clean up his image. What she doesn't expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips stirring her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn't one to cross professional boundaries-and besides, Alex doesn't do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex's bad-boy faade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.

Sawyer manages to bring a great mix of hot leading men and strong independent women to all her novels. I found this author after stumbling upon The Last Call Series. I love this series and was very excited to find her new one in this Cold Fury Series.Alex is a hot NHL player just going through the motions. He's dealing with an alcoholic father who pushed him to become the hockey player he never could be. Sutton is a confident strong woman who also has had to deal with a tough childhood just like Alex. She has a drug addicted father who her mother and her had to escape from. Sutton is so amazing she lived through a horrible childhood but refuses to let her past pain define her or take her future. My biggest complaint is that there were times Sutton stood on the line of being understanding and being a doormat. Her first boyfriend breaks up with her basically so he can be free to screw other women. They were young so I get it but because he tells her straight up that's why he is breaking up with her and he doesn't want to cheat on her then it's ok? Then a year later when he's done f'ing around he seeks her out to get back with her. Eventually she meets Alex and realizes she doesn't have feelings for the first guy but would still be his friend. Huh? I was very confused by this but oh well because they weren't meant to be anyway. Then Alex calls a stop because he can't handle all the stresses including her and it's making him lose focus of his career. She also forgives and forgets. I get she took him back they were amazing together but he basically called her a distraction and said he was angry at her for overcoming her past pain while he still struggled with his.I also didn't feel there was a clear cut pivotal moment. Alex goes from questioning whether it's lust or love with Sutton and decides to go his own way. One conversation with his best bud Garrett (really excited about this smart mouthed sexy hockey stud and his story next) and he's good to go to get his girl in a big way. Although I LOVED the last act romantic gesture to win her back I wish there was a moment we could see when Alex knew she was the one.Overall I did enjoy this one. There was lots of hot sex scenes and I LOVED the chemistry. This also had a great Epilogue. It wasn't my favorite Sawyer but it was still fun and entertaining.

Chick lit can be entertaining by allowing the reader immerse him or herself into high romance, usually spiced with a little sex before the inevitable HEA. I often think of chick lit as adult fairy tales: fairly unrealistic but fun to read. With regard to most of these basic expectations of the chick lit formula, Ms. Bennett succeeds. Her characters are those that you expect to find in most romance novels: a flawed and emotionally stunted, but devastatingly handsome male protagonist coupled with a 'strong,' nurturing, emotionally mature female protagonist who will ultimately 'save' him. Clearly Sutton, the female protagonist, likes projects because Alex certainly promises to be one.So what problems did I have with this book that rated a two star assessment? Several. I've listed them in ASCENDING order of annoyance/disappointment: 1) The male characters most often acted like 12 year olds or at least they talked like it. I do understand that men talk differently with each other than they do with women (usually) or in mixed company, but there was a level of juvenile immaturity that I had a hard time with. 2) The author chose to alternate points of view from chapter to chapter. Chapter 1 is Alex's POV, Chapter 2 is Sutton's POV and so forth. To me this smacks of amateur, fan fiction style writing when the author is not sufficiently skilled to create a distinctive voice for each of the major characters. There were times that the alternating POVs were nothing but a rehash of a particular event in the story. 3) Once the seal was broken so to speak, the book morphed from chick lit to 'dick lit' with one sex scene after another to the point that it felt like filler rather than a device to move the story along or develop the characters. Sex scenes dominated the last 60% of the book. 4) The author inflames one of my pet peeves in her choice to TELL you pretty much everything rather than SHOW you through dialog, action and setting. The bulk of the story is told through internal dialog, again, in my mind, the hallmark of an inexperienced or lazy writer. Some internal dialog is okay/necessary but the predominance in this book is grating. 5) My chief complaint is the plot. It's about a half an inch deep and uses every--single--cliche known to literature before the couple's major stumbling blocks become magically and too easily resolved. To wit: the clingy, bimbo ex-girlfriend heeds Alex's warning and goes away; the old boyfriend bows out without a whimper, both Alex's and Sutton's fathers enter rehab and they all join hands and sing Kumbaya as reconciliation and forgiveness rule the day. Forgive my skepticism, but Alex's father's transgressions toward him are so egregious that I really had a hard time swallowing the big 'forgiveness scene. The H/h's culminating 'commitment scene' which is crucial to all HEAs in chick lit, is formulaic, overplayed and silly.Bottom line: This can be read in an afternoon with absolutely no strain to your brain power, but when you finish it you may only get the same kinds of marginal satisfaction that you get from lite beer. Personally, I prefer my romances to have a little more substance.

Alex is the bad boy star of the Fury. Due to a past highlighted by an abusive alcoholic father, Alex hates the sport he is amazing at, and he can care less about the fans that adore him. Going a little too far, Fury management gives Alex an ultimatum, community service or lose his job.Sutton is thrilled with the opportunity to start up a program for kids at risk due to drug and alcohol abuse and she is not going to be discouraged by the jerky attitude of her partner in this endeavor, Alex. Unfortunately, she finds herself attracted to Alex despite his personality and her caring nature actually has her seeing past it in an effort to help this troubled man. Like Sutton, Alex cannot believe his interest in Sutton goes beyond some mindless pleasure, he really has taken an interest in her and eventually he finds himself wanting to change for her.I loved Sutton and Alex both as characters and even more as a couple. Sutton was truly a caring heroine and even though she goes a little easy on those she loves when they hurt her, I never saw her as a doormat. Alex was simply one of those jerks you can't help but love. I loved his POV. Seeing his transformation during the story was great and at no point did I find it unrealistic. Like all great stories, the couple needs to get past some challenges and I was so pleased that Bennett did not draw this out nor did she make Alex a complete jerk. On top of everything, she gives us some excellent secondary characters. Sutton's family, especially her brother Glenn, were absolutely adorable. The there is Garrett. I can only hope this sweet bad boy is the focus of the next book. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
