Review

"This tween book is an excellent read for our young people who are searching for their own identity. There are some things in life that are most important, such as a person's relationship with God through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Wendy cleverly and tenderly weaves this eternal truth into her story to challenge the reader to draw closer to God no matter what's happening in his/her life." —Marsha Hubler

Knowing it was written for young pre-teens, I thought I would give it a quick skim and save if for future grandchildren...however, after the first few pages I had fallen for River. What an unexpected surprise this book is even for adults. It takes you back to simpler times and for those whose childhoods may have been less than perfect, it is a wonderful way to find healing and comfort in knowing that through it all, you really were not alone and God was there every step of the way. I am looking forward to what River has coming next and plan on collecting the books to one day share with my grandchildren. A delight for boys and girls and a great reading partnership parents can use to create discussions with their children about bullying, love, and loss. I highly recommend it!

As middle grades teacher I can definitely recommend this book By Brenda Huff As middle grades teacher I can definitely recommend this book. The characters in My Name is River story capture the heart and the setting captures the imagination. I'd love to visit Birdsong! The ecological element of the book is engaging, whether the reader is already a backyard bird-lover, or like the main character, River, just learning to appreciate bird-watching and ecotones. The characters experience a range of emotions and real-life suffering that readers can relate to. At the same time a hopeful and redemptive tone flows through from beginning to end. The key relationships beautifully capture the healing power of love, hope and forgiveness.I am looking forward to the sequel in February!

I watched as it pulled out a range of emotions from within her. River's journey is a bumpy one and author, Wendy Dunham, weaves Biblical wisdom into the narrative to help the young girl cope with her hard life experiences. Our cheeks were wet by the end of the book. There's a really thought-provoking discussion guide at the end which enhanced the life lessons in the story. Bravo!
