In 1900 many assumed the twentieth century would be a Christian century because Western "Christian empires" ruled most of the world. What happened instead is that Christianity in the West declined dramatically, the empires collapsed, and Christianity's center moved to Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific. How did this happen so quickly? Respected scholar and teacher Scott Sunquist surveys the most recent century of Christian history, highlighting epochal changes in global Christianity. He also suggests lessons we can learn from this remarkable global Christian reversal. Ideal for an introduction to Christianity or a church history course, this book includes a foreword by Mark Noll.

The Unexpected Christian Century: The Reversal and Transformation of Global Christianity, 1900-2000, by Scott W. Sunquist

From the Back Cover The Reversal and Transformation of Global Christianity"It would be hard to overestimate the valuable contribution Scott Sunquist has made to our understanding of the global Christian movement. This short volume illustrates the point. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his perspective fresh. This volume serves as an excellent introduction to what appeared at the beginning to be the century of Western dominance but ended up being so very different. As Sunquist intimates, we are witnessing the most dramatic century of change since the early Christian period."--Gerald L. Sittser, Whitworth University; author of Water from a Deep Well"This book provides a learned overview of major themes in twentieth-century world Christianity. Distinguished scholar Scott Sunquist, writing from an insider Christian perspective, shows how such factors as migration, persecution, the decline of Western Christianity, and Pentecostalism have created a religion far different from that of a century ago. He balances depth and breadth in a readable format and, in so doing, provides a valuable addition to the growing body of scholarship on world Christianity."--Dana L. Robert, Boston University; author of Christian Mission: How Christianity Became a World Religion"This volume places us in Sunquist's debt for extending the Christian story beyond the familiar clichés, luminaries, and events of conventional Western church histories to a trajectory that includes and accounts for the fecund world of Christianity in the global South. Full of surprises, this is an astounding, fast-moving story, whose latest chapter was not and could not have been predicted by earlier generations of church historians."--Jonathan J. Bonk, Overseas Ministries Study Center"A godsend for opening up a vitally important history and pointing the way toward responsible Christian life in the future."--Mark A. Noll (from the foreword)

About the Author Scott W. Sunquist (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) is dean of the School of Intercultural Studies and professor of world Christianity at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He authored the Christianity Today Book Award winner Understanding Christian Mission, coauthored the multivolume History of the World Christian Movement, and coedited A Dictionary of Asian Christianity.

Insightful and Relevant Study of the 20th Century Church By Gwen The Unexpected Christian Century examines the movements affecting Global Christianity in the 20th century. The book is extremely well-researched, and yet, like all of Sunquist's books, it remains readable. As a resource for scholars, or information for general audiences, the book has great takeaways for anyone interested in global Christian movements. The thematic orientation works well for the book. Being that the book tackles more recent history, I appreciated being less muddled up in a timeline of events and more in thematic threads that continue to affect the church today. In fact, all of the themes remain relevant as Christianity continues to ebb and flow under the influences of various powers and movements on the world stage.

As a fairly informed Catholic, I see parallels between the experiences of my church and that of our "separated brothers:" the collapse of Christendom in the first-world balanced by the rise of a vibrant third-world Christianity. As part of an overall picture of Christianity, this book provides an essential introduction on its growth and shifts in the last century. However, as a global survey of such a momentous period, it could not provide details on any one individual, country, or movement. I suppose that this could be a criticism of any textbook, no matter how well written: to cover everything essential to the overall picture, the view must remain very high level, and the story has to shift quickly from one topic to the next. Perhaps the worth of such a book can be judged by whether the reader is left wanting to learn more; in that sense, the book worked for me.

A Must-Read for Followers of Christ By Soulfarer Histories of Christianity, while opening the reader’s eyes to fascinating and dramatic developments, are often focused on the Christian church’s movements through Europe and North America. Scott Sunquist takes us to places across the globe that provide evidence of the great diversity and deep spirituality of the church’s emergence across all borders. While some might claim that Christianity is characterized as predominantly white and affluent, Sunquist provides a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic portrait of a church energized more by the work of God’s Spirit than by the forces of politics, nationalism, or ethnic identity. This very accessible book is a must-read for followers of Christ who want to understand their faith as a global, dynamic reality that is neither hindered nor defined by nation-states.

Commitment phobic Cara Witchai loves her life the way it is—especially her no-strings-attached relationship with long-time lover Jason. But when Jason blurts out a marriage proposal, it throws Cara into a tailspin. How can Jason convince her to stay? Cara, a successful restauranteur, prefers to be in charge of her life. She’s done a great job of it so far. She has a wonderful friend, a restaurant where customers need reservations months in advance to get a table and she has a man who fits into her life without taking over. She can get on with her life while still having fantastic sex and not have to worry about maintaining a relationship that will eventually fall apart. It’s bliss, as far as she’s concerned. Jason has other ideas for his latest visit to see Cara. They’ve dated in the past, but after breaking up, their arrangement has evolved into a mutually satisfying meet every few months. They understand each other and are happy in and out of bed. However, neither has pushed for anything more. Jason wants to take things further, so he must convince Cara that they make the perfect couple. His plan—use every weapon in his arsenal. Money, his command over her body. Whatever it takes. By momof3infl Cara and Jason have had a no-strings relationship since college, but when he comes back this time, he has other plans. Will no nonsense Cara be able to go along with them? I've got to say, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would for a few reasons. First, the writing was wonderful, this was easy to read and a lot of fun. Second, damn, the sex was scorching. I can see why they keep going back to each other! Third, I just loved the characters, they were relatable, and the situation made you sympathetic towards both Jason and Cara. Anyway, I was actually expecting the book to have a little more angst, or resemble more work for the characters because of the title. Grind was surprisingly smooth, in a good way. I loved Jason's tactics, and he made me swoon with his energy and swagger. I will definitely come back to Kait Gamble for more.

I found myself wondering why there was any confusion. Sure, there was the fact that Cara wasn't sure she really wanted to be in a serious relationship with Jason, but then she would hang all over him and spend all this time with him like it was nothing. It was a sweet story, but in the end there really wasn't all that much turmoil over either of their decisions.I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This was a really good book and I liked her friend Chelsea and the antics of her two chefs. This was a really good beginning to the series. I will definitely read more by this author!

100 Names of God Daily Devotional, by Christopher D. Hudson, Rose Publishing

Review There has long been a need for a Christian devotional that balances the literary virtues of readability, brevity, and depth. Christopher Hudson has threaded the theological needle with his latest work: 100 Names of God Daily Devotional (Rose Publishing). Beautiful in presentation, stylish in appearance, and formatted for readability, the book provides a refreshing reading experience often lacking in today s literature. More important, however, is its design and content. Hudson deftly identifies 100 common and not-so-common divine names that prove to be a devotional delight. Each devotional provides a Divine name/title/description, its English translation, and a biblical reference of its use. These are followed by engaging narratives that weave modern-day storylines with rich overviews of corresponding biblical passages that introduce the reader to that particular name of God, followed by its application to our lives. Each devotional concludes with a reflection question, commitment prayer, and suggested scripture for those wanting deeper study for personal enrichment. 100 Names of God Daily Devotional is accessible and approachable while also being relevant and readable. It meets the needs of growing believers who have the desire for a deeper dive in their daily devotions. Moreover, Christopher Hudson s ability to provide biblically-informed readers with a broad diversity of Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic divine names, each of which is indexed to Strong s numbering system, makes this devotional a theological treasure trove that will prove to be popular with pastors, professors, and mature Christian believers everywhere. --Freddy Cardoza, Ph.D. Chair, Department of Christian Education, Talbot School of Theology Executive Director, Society of Professors in Christian EducationWhen you know someone, you know their name. The person is important to you, and you to that person. It is a deeply intimate and personal experience to call a person by their name. And this is even more true in our relationship with God. 100 Names of God brings our connection to God to a new level of closeness and worship. You will find yourself finding God yet again. --John Townsend New York Times bestselling author Leadership expert, psychologist and theologianThis is a book I've been waiting for ever since I heard Amy Grant sing the song, El Shaddai some 30 years ago. For me it was a haunting song about the power of God s name. El Shaddai. El Elyon. Adonai. The lyrics by Michael Card beautifully tie the Old Testament promise into the New Testament fulfillment. By helping us understand the many names of God sprinkled through Scripture, this book does the same. As a result, the book is just as moving and memorable as the song. Read it in a long afternoon or over 100 days, and you ll be reminded (or learn) that God is a Strong Tower, a Rock, a Potter, a Consuming Fire, the One Who Lifts My Head, and, of course, our Deliverer. To complement the engaging, reader-friendly content, the book also includes a nice index and a plan for breaking the book down into a six-week personal or group study. This is a book I will not give away. It will stay on a nearby shelf in my office. --Jay Payleitner, best-selling author of What if God Wrote Your Bucket List?

About the Author Christopher Hudson has contributed to over fifty Bible projects, sixty study guides, and over a hundred books. He has also served as managing editor for best-selling Bibles such as: The Love Languages Devotional Bible with Gary Chapman (Moody), Inspirational Bible with Max Lucado (Thomas Nelson), and the Case for Christ Study Bible with Lee Strobel (Zondervan). By Midwest gal I have used a variety of books about the name of God and always find that kind of study so worthwhile and enriches my understanding of who God is in his entirety. This book has been another great resource. I've been using this for a devotion group with teens and it has been working well there too. The writing is understandable and clear and insightful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good insights. Highly recommend it. By Debbie "100 Names of God" is a daily devotional containing 100 devotions. Each devotion is 1-2 pages long, so they don't take long to read. The author did a good job of leaving me with insights to think about throughout the day. Each devotion covered a name of God from the Old or New Testament and started with that name along with a verse where that name is used. The author explained how this name provides important insights into God's character. He clearly explained his points and provided background information when needed. He ended each devotion with a prayer and a question prompting the reader to see how these insights impact your life.I really enjoyed this devotional and plan to read through it again. I'd highly recommend it.I received this book as a .pdf review copy from the publisher.

Rose Publishing are to be congratulated on producing a top-class product.Secondly, the title seems a little daunting (100 Names of God) at first, but once you start to rediscover/discover God’s names through reading each devotion, you will find what a veritable treasure trove that you have in owning this book.Thirdly, the page layout for each devotion is extremely user friendly. After each of God’s names there is a relevant Bible verse(s) and then the devotional text, which contains a mixture of biblical exegesis and examples taken from a modern-day context. The writing contains a high level of theological content but it is written in such a way that it is totally accessible for all readers. This is a book for everyone. Following this is a well-thought-out question for the reader to reflect upon. There are also at least a couple of secondary Bible readings to further delve into each of God’s name in more depth; this is followed by a short prayer to bring each devotion to a close. Finally, I am only just over a couple of weeks into this book and it will be a few months before I finish, but I think you could read more than one name of God daily. However, I want to take my time and soak up all the learning that I am getting from reading this book. If you want to daily engage with God’s word and to further study the names of God, then this book is definitely for you. The author has written such an informative book that uses the truth of the Scriptures, that I feel this book will be read many times by me and my family. It could quite easily be used as a reference book because it contains an index of the names of God with their Strong’s Dictionary number, which will help in further study. This book is also aimed at group use as well as individuals, as there is a set six-week Bible study structured around this book, which is situated at the back of the book.I can highly recommend this book in all ways. The price to quality ratio is outstanding. Just buy it; enjoy it—you will definitely not be disappointed.

It is a book that takes place in England, so getting used to that vocabulary was quite fun. The story involves Natasha (Tasha), and twins, Celeste and Sebastian Walker. Tasha initially meets the twin when she is relocated to another school and is instantly befriended by Celeste. Tasha is astonished that someone as sophisticated as Celeste Walker would want to be her friend as Tasha was bullied by other students which lead to her school relocation. Tasha an Celeste become best friends and Tasha and Sebastian secretly have deep conversations during this time. Tragedy strikes for the twins and Tasha is suddenly without her best friend. Ten years later, Celeste and Sebastian have returned to London and a chance meeting between Tasha and Celeste allows them to reunite. The twins, now have fast paced careers, and Tasha is working her way up on the ladder at a museum. It as if time has been forgotten and Celeste sweeps up Tasha into her world, and Tasha is soon living with Celeste and Sebastian and the relationships grow deeper between the three of them. There were a lot of interesting twists and turns throughout this book that I didn't see coming, but that is for you to discover. I loved the way the author showed how Celeste and Sebastian saw Tasha through their eyes when they first meet, as Tasha thought she didn't need friends. The Epilogue to the book made it absolutely complete.I received this book in exchange for an honest review!!

I thought it was, I don't know. I don't want to give away too many details. I didn't care for Celeste. That whiny, petulant, spoiled character is a turn off. Tasha was a little odd, too. Overall it was good book, a crazy end that I didn't see coming and the epilogue tied everything together, nicely.

The Catechism of the Council of Trent was directed to all priests. The recently released Catechism of the Catholic Church was directed to all bishops. The Catechism of Pope St. Pius X is that pope's partial realization of a simple, plain, brief, popular Catechism for uniform use throughout the whole world. In other words it is directed to the layman . It was used in the ecclesiastical province of Rome and for some years in other parts of Italy. It was not, however, prescribed for use throughout the universal church.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a great book at a great BARGAIN. By Amazon Customer Hey, Folks, This lovely book is identical in content to the other Pius X catechism being sold on Amazon, which I also have. As you may know, in the 1800s, the "Bishop of Mantua ( later St. Pius X)... [wanted to create]...a simple, plain, brief, and popular Catechism for uniform use all over the world." So here it is. It is, of course, in Q & A format and these are the main subjects: The Apostle's Creed, prayer, the Sacraments, the Commandments of God, the precepts of the Church, virtues and vices, and miscellaneous subjects. ( identical in both books.) I prefer this book because there is decent spacing between the questions and answers although the type is smaller. In the other catechism the questions and answers form a solid page--no real spacing, larger type, however. This book is the same size as the other, about 9" x6" with 155 pages. As testimony to my comments, I have just purchased 10 copies to give to my wayward Catholic family and friends to read before the Chastisement really ramps up. Note that this book is almost half the price of the other book. Sweet.

Thorn in the Flesh, by Anne Brooke

Review Thorn in the Flesh is a gripping psychological thriller whose central character Kate goes through a whole gamut of emotions from the deeply sensual to the tenderness of true friendship, betrayal, loss, fear, a sense of personality annihilation and nail biting terror. I am constantly amazed by Anne Brooke's ability to understand abnormal levels of perversion. But at the end of this novel one is left not with the feeling of an abnormal caricature but more with a query and urge to understand what strange twist of otherwise normal events could have sown such a tragic seed. -- Margaret Gill, author of Narwhal

About the Author Anne Brooke lives in Surrey, UK. She is a multi-published author in a variety of genres, including gay erotic romance, fantasy, comedy, thrillers, biblical fiction and the occasional chicklit novel. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the Harry Bowling Prize (for novels set in London) and the Royal Literary Fund Scheme. When not writing, she spends time in the garden attempting to differentiate between flowers and weeds. Occasionally, she can also be found in the kitchen making cakes. Every now and again, they are edible.

Interesting Read By LAS Reviewer How do you outsmart a villain who knows all of your deepest, darkest secrets? After she is violently assaulted, all Kate Harris wants to do is return to her old life. While she certainly needs time to recover from such a traumatic experience, I was pleasantly surprised to see Kate being surrounded by such sympathetic friends, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers as she heals. It was even more gratifying to see Kate acknowledge what happened to her without allowing it to be the defining experience of her life. After the terror of the first scene the plot slows down for several chapters. I enjoyed the chance to learn more about the longstanding friendship between Kate and Nicky, her best friend. They clearly have known one another a long time, and their bond is so strong that even when they're grouchy I felt the love and concern behind their complaints. What I didn't understand about this novel was why Kate refuses to tell the police about the anonymous threats she receives after she's discharged from the hospital. At the very least they could have documented what was happening in case her tormentor decides to escalate the situation. Yes, sometimes the police don't respond to these things appropriately, but I didn't understand why a woman who had positive interactions with them in the past wouldn't try a little harder to keep the authorities up-to-date.With that being said, Kate Harris is a wonderfully nuanced protagonist. As I read this book, I felt like I was catching up with an old, dear friend whose choices occasionally frustrate me. At times I wished Kate was a real person so I could gently scold her for making such poor decisions in the past. A woman as intelligent and socially aware as her really ought to know better, but the strong character development and attention to detail made this book impossible to put down.Thorn in the Flesh is a slow burning mystery woven into the ordinary lives of a close-knit group of friends. This is a great choice for readers who prefer to get to know characters well before the plot heats up. The payoff at the end is well worth the initial emotional investment!Originally posted at Long and Short Reviews

By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS reviewer DawnThorn in the Flesh begins with a horrifically traumatic event in Kate's life. Afterward Kate begins to examine her life.Is she happy? Is she where she wants to be? Are there things in her past that should be cleared up?Kate is a nuanced character. There were times I loved and hated her. She has a best friend, Nicky, but Kate has never really let Nicky "know" her. Kate holds back but Nicky confronts her. I was so proud of Kate when she decided to be fully honest with Nicky. We all need comfort at times. It's not shameful to ask for or need it.Kate didn't handle herself well in the past. She made some serious mistakes in how she treated others. But she did not deserve what happened to her because of it.Kate examines herself and makes the necessary changes. Her emotional growth throughout the book is astounding. She was committed to starting a new life. The plot twist is off the charts! I can't say more or it would be too obvious. I will say this, Thorn in the Flesh is emotionally stirring, dealing with circumstances that most of us will never understand. I began the story not having much respect for Kate. By the end of the book, I felt as if I'd been to hell and back with her.Despite never having been in Kate's circumstances, the story made me think about my own life and where I am currently.I recommend the book to everyone. I think men who have a loved one who has gone through such an event will understand more if they read Thorn in the Flesh. This review and more at openbooksociety dot com

Hartman I recently had the opportunity to read this work, and was completely blown away by the quality of the writing. Brooke manages to create brilliantly flawed characters, and thrusts them into a story that never becomes cliche or boring. At times suspenseful, at times heartbreaking and at all times a story worth delving into, Brooke presents a story that doesn't necessarily allow itself to be pigeonholed into a specific genre, thus broadening its appeal to many readers. By koolmom I had always heard that a number of benefits could come from acupuncture, but that would never work for me because I hate needles. I have been looking for other means of healing therapies that are a lot less invasive. Recently I have been researching Tuina Chinese Massage. In my quest to learn more and perhaps even learn some techniques I could do at home, I bought this book. I am writing this review because the book really delivered in more ways than one. First and foremost I learned Tuina has many more benefits than I realized. Also, I learned it is very similar to acupuncture but without needles! As well, I learned many helpful techniques that I can do myself. For me that was the best part of the book. The author did a good job explaining step by step how to do each. Now all that’s left for me is to go practice what was shown so I can do these in my home.

Is he a selfless savior or a self-seeking seducer?

After struggling for years to get pregnant, Dolores Walsh loses her four-year-old daughter to cancer. A year later, at a bereavement support meeting, Dolores meets a charismatic psychic whose occult power reportedly connects people with deceased loved ones. Dolores attends Sal’s séances, unable to resist his promise of hope or to ignore his powerful sensuality.

Joe, her husband, insists Esperanza is swindling Dolores. When he pressures her to see a psychiatrist, she lays bare for the doctor the desperate need and festering secret that explain her obsession with the psychic.

When Joe threatens to destroy Sal with information about his past, the affair is doomed. Devastated, Dolores takes to her bed and refuses to eat . . . until she feels a stirring within her. Is her tormented mind playing tricks on her?

Landry “…Mothers aren’t supposed to outlive their babies.” are words spoken by Dolores Walsh in response to having lost her only child, a four year old girl named Bertie. This is the beginning of Marie Bacigalupo’s heart breaking, debut Novella, Ninth-Month Midnight. With the death of her child, Dolores becomes numb, nothing. Her husband, Joe, eventually pushes Dolores, who is in a deep state of depression, into seeing a psychiatrist. But the only real hope in Dolores’ eyes comes in the way of a dark horse - a psychic named Salvador Esperanza. What follows is an obsession in Dolores that is both frightening and mesmerizing to witness. She begins a desperate quest to heal her loss, and self and that is what drives the story. Dolores will either descend into complete madness or, phoenix like, arise from the ashes. All told with deep undertones of a spiritual afterlife with connotations of both heaven and hell.Bacigalupo is a true craftsman. The writing is minimalistic, with no wasted words or indulgent pontificating - only smart, crisp language that crackles with speed and veracity. The reader feels every ripple of skin, breath and exhalation of cigarette smoke. This is a story that puts the reader in the here and now- experiencing all.Bacigalupo holds suspense high by creating a feeling that at any moment a tragedy of a much larger magnitude teeters on the protagonist’s horizon. It’s like leaving your house with the gnawing, but real possibility of having left your stove on, and being too far gone to turn back.If you’re interested in a life and death struggle with a foray into the afterworld, then Ninth-Month Midnight is your next read!

By ML Grief, an existential conundrum that sometimes ruins the life of the present, is the subject of this startling debut novel by Marie Bacigalupo. She takes as her subject the worst grief of all, the death of a child, and in incisive and lyrical prose, explores how a mother learns to live again after her four-year-old tragically dies of a rare cancer. The author takes us on a harrowing, page-turning journey through the aftermath of the child’s death. Dolores spends much of her time sleeping and smoking cigarettes until she meets a psychic at a bereavement group. As her relationship develops with the psychic, Dolores goes from putting aside her skepticism to desperately depending on him as a channel through which she can possibly contact the lost child. The characters in this story are richly drawn and compelling: Dolores has lost her faith in God and her religion and yet remains a victim of it as she blames herself for her child’s death; Dolores’s husband Joe is both a compassionate partner and an overbearing jailer, as he attempts to protect his wife from herself; and the mysterious psychic is perhaps a healer and a spiritual adept and perhaps a huckster and a trickster. In this simple but tightly constructed story, Bacigalupo brings depth and originality to the age old questions: What happens when we die? Is it possible to contact those who have entered that “undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns”? How does a human being make sense of life in the knowledge of its tragic dimension and its ephemerality? This novel will not disappoint and is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a well-told story that has both suspense and heft.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended! By Amazon Customer Nine Month Midnight by Marie Bacigalupo was a deeply compelling, at times heart-wrenching story, about grief and the desperate need of a mother to reunite with her dead child. Since losing her four-year old precious daughter to cancer a year ago, Dolores Walsh has been living in limbo, like a zombie. After a suicide attempt, she’s prompted by her husband Joe to seek the help of a psychiatrist to treat her depression. Then at a bereavement group she meets Sal Esperanza, a charismatic psychic who claims he has the power to channel the dead. Though Dolores is sceptical at first, she soon becomes intensely fixated with the idea of speaking with her daughter’s spirit.Although Joe is against the idea and warns her that Sal is a con man after money, nothing derails Dolores from attending his seances. Is Sal, indeed, a fraud…or is he the real thing and the only person who can make her only desire in life possible?A novella, I read Ninth-Month Midnight in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. The story moves at a fast pace, with Dolores’ desperation being transmitted to the reader so that we feel all her grief and obsession. What could be worse for a mother than losing her child? Most women will relate to Dolores’ predicament and sympathize with her actions, even though they might not approve of all of them. Bacigalupo writes with an economy of words that is sometimes gritty, letting the action speak for the characters. Ultimately, this is a story of hope and one I was very glad to have read. Highly recommended!

Dear Catastrophe Waitress: A Novel, by Brendan Halpin

From Publishers Weekly Vindictive songs change the course of two people's lives in Halpin's third novel (after Long Way Back), a funny and unlikely story about mending broken hearts. Philippa Strange, a fresh-out-of-high-school punk rock girl, divides her time between an alcoholic mother in Cincinnati and a rocker boyfriend in London and becomes unfortunately notorious after her boyfriend immortalizes her cheating ways—and her name—in a popular song. Meanwhile, shortly after Mark Norris finishes college in Philadelphia, he finds himself the victim of "premature ejaculation libel" when his ex-girlfriend cracks the Top 40 with her hit song, "Two Minute Man." Mark stumbles his way though toxic relationships as a pregnant Philippa, back in the States for good, fakes her death and assumes a new identity to escape from a violent boyfriend. Oddly, Mark's bumbling early adulthood is more engaging to read about than Philippa's flight, and though it's a given that the two will end up together, Halpin's assured prose and knack for mischievously comic turns ensure a smooth ride into happily ever after. From Booklist In alternating chapters, Halpin (Long Way Back, 2006) details dual stories covering 20 years in the lives of punk-rock-loving Philippa and sensitive Mark. When Philippa's London musician boyfriend catches her cheating, he immortalizes the incident in a wildly popular song that sends her scurrying back to Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Mark meets brooding bisexual Raquel, who takes off for L.A. after college and humiliates him with her chart-topping "Two-Minute Man." Things continue to spiral downward for both as Philippa becomes pregnant by an abusive lover and completely cuts off contact with her family and friends, changing her identity and moving to Boston, while Mark, who has become an elementary-school teacher, is dumped by his corporate lawyer fiancee. Halpin's story sometimes feels too superficial because of the time compression. But when he is at his best--his tenderhearted depictions of Mark's loneliness and inept romantic relationships and of the fraught but loving bond between Philippa and her strong-willed daughter--he proves himself to be an insightful observer of contemporary relationships. A funny and touching, if somewhat predictable, tribute to the brokenhearted. Joanne WilkinsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

She drinks a St. Pauli Girl dark and sits on the hood of Brad Worthington’s Camaro. She watches as a circle of stoners, fellow members of the Walnut Prep class of 1983, the last class to enter high school in the 1970s, pass a bong around, shed an occasional tear, and sing along with the words they can understand from Yes’s “Starship Trooper,” which is blaring from inside of Bobby Shiffer’s house. She hates Yes, but she finds that she has kind of warmed to her Yes-listening classmates in the last few months. There are, after all, only fifty of them here at Walnut Prep, and they’ve been together since the first grade, and the fact that they are not as cool as she is no longer seems like a reason to openly scorn them. In fact, Philippa finds as she looks down into the grass at her stoned classmates that she feels real tenderness for them simply because she remembers them all as little kids, and because she’s never going to see them again after tonight and they are the only people who knew her before her parents split, before Mom started drinking, before she became the punk rock chick, back when she was just that little girl who really liked H. R. Pufnstuf. She opens the graduation program again and runs down the list of the names of her classmates and where they are going for college. She doesn’t know if Denison University is a stoner school already, but it certainly looks like it will be next year. She finds her own name: “Philippa Jane Strange: London Academy of Music.” She smiles to herself, unable to believe she got away with this. It’s her little private joke to herself, because what she’s going to do next year is what she’s done every summer since the seventh grade: go live at her dad’s flat in London and go to clubs and hear punk rock. It’s one in the afternoon. Philippa staggers down to the kitchen of her dad’s flat, turns on the electric kettle, puts a PG Tips tea bag into a cup, and sits down at the table. She’s only mildly hungover. Dad, as he does whenever he spends the night here and not at Ella’s, has left Philippa this morning’s Telegraph, Times, and Guardian on the table. Once the kettle whistles, Philippa pours the hot water out and sits down to read the Telegraph. From there she’ll move to The Times, and finish up with The Guardian. She and her dad have a joke about how she reads from right to left. Dad does the opposite, but with the same impulse: begin with the one you disagree with the most and work your way over to your side to see what the real story is.Philippa’s continued presence in her dad’s flat is a rebuke to both of their political convictions. Philippa, like her friends, fumes with outrage over what the Thatcher government is doing to the welfare state. Unlike her friends, she lives for free in a very smart flat and has food and booze money supplied to her by Simon Strange, an investment banker who belongs to the class of people that benefit most from the economic policies of the Tory government.Simon, like his friends and co-workers, yearns for the dismantling of the welfare state, for a more Americanized system where the government doesn’t act as nanny and people are forced to show a little personal responsibility. Unlike his friends and co-workers, Simon runs a little mini welfare state of his own, with an endless reservoir of guilt over the divorce and his subsequent return to the UK fueling a micro-economy that would disgust him on a macro scale: Philippa pays no rent, is not expected to work, and drinks up her spending money.Philippa is oblivious to any political irony in her situation, but Simon is not, principally because Ella points it out to him on a daily basis. Philippa’s causing a terrible strain on Simon’s relationship with Ella, but she’s oblivious to this, too.She does, however, notice that the date on all the papers is October 1. At this point, she realizes, all of her classmates from Walnut Prep, even the ones who went to school in California, are in their little college dorms, happily marching on the treadmill that will lead them back to their dads’ companies, where they will be groomed to take over once they’ve gotten that BA under their belts. She feels superior to them, of course, but also, for the first time ever, a bit lost. She’s never been in London this late in the year. It’s starting to get cool and rainy, and it’s already getting dark much earlier, so that heady feeling of emerging from the pub two pints into a good booze-up at nine p.m. with the sun shining down is gone at least until next summer. And she’s starting to feel jaded about the music scene. The Clash are opening for the Who on a stadium tour of the US, for God’s sake, and she remembers being thirteen and packing into a sweaty club to see them and hearing “White Riot” for the first time and having her life changed as a result, and nothing currently happening in the clubs can touch anything that happened then. This is even true of Trevor’s band, the NHS. (It stands for the National Hate Service, and is supposed to serve as some kind of political commentary on the Tories’ attack on the National Health Service, but Trevor reads three fewer newspapers every day than Philippa does and writes songs principally about booze and sex.) Philippa loves watching them perform, because Trevor is so very sexy when he sings, and she likes watching his hands on the guitar and remembering them on her the night before, imagining them on her after the show. But she’s been with Trevor for nearly three months now, and the fog of infatuation is lifting, and she is forced to admit that the NHS is not the Clash. The phone rings twice in quick succession, and Philippa feels annoyed. Annoyed because she prefers the one long ring of US phones to the chirpy, insistent two-ring alert of British phones, annoyed because she’s only halfway through The Times, and she really likes to read all three papers before speaking to anyone, and most of all annoyed because she thinks it’s Trevor calling.Trevor is terrible on the phone, inarticulate and clumsy, and his matter-of-fact proclamations of lust—“Thinkin’ about your knickers today, Phil”—that actually seemed hot at first are now just kind of annoying. (She does enjoy the fact that the NHS’s latest single is called “Thinkin’ About Your Knickers,” though.) Also, he’s started stressing his poverty more and more recently (“I’m totally skint, Phil, buy us a pint”), and she’s beginning to suspect that he likes Simon’s money a lot more than her tits, which are another frequent topic of conversation. So the phone trills—Ringring! . . . Ringring!—and it just won’t stop, and she doesn’t want to answer it, but she can’t very well read The Times with that business going on, and she figures she’ll have to talk to Trevor at some point today, so she may as well get it over with. She picks up the phone with her best punk rock attitude: “Yeah?”“Uh, hello?” It’s a woman. Not Trevor. Not Ella calling to tell her to get a fucking job, either. This is not a fear on Philippa’s radar at the moment, though it’s a conversation that Ella is currently planning. No, it’s an American woman. But it’s not Mom.“Yeah?” Philippa says with more annoyance.“Um, Philippa?”“Speaking.”“It’s your aunt Betsy, honey. There’s . . . ,” and Aunt Betsy starts to cry. Philippa knows that nobody cries on a transatlantic phone call if it’s good news, and she knows Betsy wouldn’t spend the money on the phone call just to talk to her, and she knows she should be alarmed, or worried, or something, but she searches herself and finds nothing. She does manage to de-snottify her voice, though.“What is it, B? What’s wrong?”“It’s your mom, sweetie, she’s . . . there’s been an accident.”Is she dead? Do you mean she’s dead, Aunt B? Say what you mean, dammit! Philippa’s relieved to find that she cares about the answer to this question.“Is she okay?”“She . . . her leg is badly fractured in three places, and the steering wheel knocked her two front teeth out, and she’s bruised all over, but she . . .” More crying. “I’m sorry, sweetie. She’s going to walk again, they say they can fix her face, and she’s not in a coma or anything, but she’s pretty loopy on the pain medication right now.”“Jesus.” If she’s not dead, I’m not flying to Cincinnati, Philippa thinks. She sends her aunt telepathic messages: Don’t ask me to come back, because then I’ll have to say no, and then I’ll be a bad daughter, but I don’t want to come to Cincinnati, so if you just don’t ask, we’ll be fine.“She . . . she was drinking, honey.” Well, duh, Philippa wants to say. I’m guessing it was a one-car accident, too. “She wrapped her car around a tree on Clough Pike.” Silence. Philippa has nothing to say. The silence drags on for more microseconds, and Philippa knows this is where she’s supposed to say she’ll be on the next flight, that she’s rushing to her mother’s bedside.Instead she says, “What hospital’s she in?”“Mercy.” Of course it’s the closest one to Clough Pike, but Philippa remembers her mom taking her out of Mercy when she’d broken her arm sledding, and they told her she’d have to...

I loved this book. I loved Mark. he's the kind of guy that a girl would love to end up with and i loved Stacey. Phillipa was a complete mess, but Stacey was beautiful. I loved how her relationship with her daughter was not perfect, how she doubted herself, how he doubted himself, never seeing the greatness that they each possessed. It was a little predictable in some ways, but it's what readers want. It's what makes a happy ending. I highly recommend this book. If you like Nick Hornby, you'd like this, except i actually identify with this book more b/c the author seemed more intuned with a woman's mind.

Absorbing and touching pop-infused love story By John Hunt The Belle and Sebastian song of the same name seems to have provided the basic structure of this story of the convergence and romance of two damaged but likeable protagonists. The characters' extensive backstories are to some extent schematic (certain patterns from the past reassert themselves rather too obviously in the present), but the novel is enjoyable and absorbing, pop-literate without being obnoxious, and funny enough, with a voice that is always decent and humane.

I read it in two nights and didn't want it to be over. Halpin's characters are likeable and understandable. The book is incredibly readable. And he conveys the message that despite how hard life is, if you keep going day by day, trying to do better -- you just might!
