Cheves How do you say goodbye when you are still here? How do you say goodbye before your thoughts, desires, and wishes disappear from your mind? What happens when all that's left of you is a human shell? Everyone invites guests to their homes for dinner, or just to talk. But, some guests overstay their welcome and others are just plain annoying. Uninvited guests can be escorted out and asked to leave, hopefully never to return. One uninvited guest mad its way into my mother's mind and refused to leave.I've known people who have family members that have literally lost their minds. Or better yet, lost everything stored within their minds. They forget where they are, where they are going, who they are and who the strangers that keep showing up might be. They forget to eat or can't remember if they did eat. They forget the names of their favorite food and even their own children. As the days go by they lose more and more of what took years to fill their minds. Eventually that full mind is empty and hollow. What causes this? You've probably already answered that question with that terrible disease called Alzheimer.I've personally never been exposed to Alzheimer but after reading The Vanishing Mind I feel that has changed. The way the Author combined the experience as a caregivers/family member and the journals written by her mother when her mind was still there enough to write, you can't help but feel as if you're a part of the family or at least a close friend. The insight I found through this book has me watching my own loved ones more closely with the possible chance that they may show some of these signs. I'm also watching myself too.Author Fran Lewis goes one step further in helping those who are faced with this dreadful disease. She has included tips for the caregivers stressing on how to speak in a way that may be a little easier for them to understand; how to help them with simple things like eating, dressing and bathing; how to find activities that they may understand and enjoy; and she even gives you a list of agencies that can be beneficial in helping you with their care, understanding their problems and most important - how to deal with your own feelings. This is a book that I recommend to everyone - young and old. It might just be the book that will help you better cope with those you love who just might experience this heart breaking disease called Alzheimer.

By Ann Stanmore What a wonderful, although heartbreaking book this is. There is so much here that needs to be read by everyone. Within this inspiring book Fran Lewis gives so much information to help others not only understand what can happen when Alzheimer disease strikes, but how to get help if it is needed. Fran describes some of the help her family were given by Caregivers and Home Health Aides. The dedication and compassion of these people is amazing. In Ruth’s own words we learn something about this well loved lady. Along with moving family memories and tributes we see how much she was loved. Actually at this point I had to take a break from reading as the tears were flowing. So very touching. We journey with Ruth as she instils her own high values to her children and how she was always there for them, on to the early signs of this awful disease. This normal happy family didn’t realise how dramatically their lives would change when Alzheimers was first diagnosed. Fran very bravely, in her own caring way, helps others to understand how it is for anyone affected by this disease. There were many things to learn. There is so much information within the pages of this book that along with reading the story of Ruth, we can begin to understand Alzheimers and how much help is available.Although at the start of this review I say this is a heartbreaking book, it is also heart-warming. The love shown throughout this story can almost be felt. Many of us have been touched in some way by someone with Alzheimers disease, maybe a friend of a friend, a close relative or just someone you know, but few of us really understand it. I urge everyone to read this book - it really can help.I give thanks to the author Fran Lewis for sharing this story.I highly recommend this - it deserves five stars

Lieberman I was not fortunate enough to meet Ruth but while I was learning about this illness, I felt it was happening someone I felt I knew already - and admired. I was especially moved by Ruth’s point of view for the section, "Life as I see it now." Wow, that was excellent writing. I also enjoyed the anecdotes and the poems. It was fascinating to learn about her relationships with the author and the rest of her family. That history was impactful and very relatable. But beyond being informative, the advice about being a health care provider is so very valuable. The story is a wonderful tribute. Ruth's life was important to the people who knew and loved her, but thanks to this writing effort, Ruth's life will be important to many others.
