In 1900 many assumed the twentieth century would be a Christian century because Western "Christian empires" ruled most of the world. What happened instead is that Christianity in the West declined dramatically, the empires collapsed, and Christianity's center moved to Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific. How did this happen so quickly? Respected scholar and teacher Scott Sunquist surveys the most recent century of Christian history, highlighting epochal changes in global Christianity. He also suggests lessons we can learn from this remarkable global Christian reversal. Ideal for an introduction to Christianity or a church history course, this book includes a foreword by Mark Noll.

From the Back Cover The Reversal and Transformation of Global Christianity"It would be hard to overestimate the valuable contribution Scott Sunquist has made to our understanding of the global Christian movement. This short volume illustrates the point. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his perspective fresh. This volume serves as an excellent introduction to what appeared at the beginning to be the century of Western dominance but ended up being so very different. As Sunquist intimates, we are witnessing the most dramatic century of change since the early Christian period."--Gerald L. Sittser, Whitworth University; author of Water from a Deep Well"This book provides a learned overview of major themes in twentieth-century world Christianity. Distinguished scholar Scott Sunquist, writing from an insider Christian perspective, shows how such factors as migration, persecution, the decline of Western Christianity, and Pentecostalism have created a religion far different from that of a century ago. He balances depth and breadth in a readable format and, in so doing, provides a valuable addition to the growing body of scholarship on world Christianity."--Dana L. Robert, Boston University; author of Christian Mission: How Christianity Became a World Religion"This volume places us in Sunquist's debt for extending the Christian story beyond the familiar clichés, luminaries, and events of conventional Western church histories to a trajectory that includes and accounts for the fecund world of Christianity in the global South. Full of surprises, this is an astounding, fast-moving story, whose latest chapter was not and could not have been predicted by earlier generations of church historians."--Jonathan J. Bonk, Overseas Ministries Study Center"A godsend for opening up a vitally important history and pointing the way toward responsible Christian life in the future."--Mark A. Noll (from the foreword)

Insightful and Relevant Study of the 20th Century Church By Gwen The Unexpected Christian Century examines the movements affecting Global Christianity in the 20th century. The book is extremely well-researched, and yet, like all of Sunquist's books, it remains readable. As a resource for scholars, or information for general audiences, the book has great takeaways for anyone interested in global Christian movements. The thematic orientation works well for the book. Being that the book tackles more recent history, I appreciated being less muddled up in a timeline of events and more in thematic threads that continue to affect the church today. In fact, all of the themes remain relevant as Christianity continues to ebb and flow under the influences of various powers and movements on the world stage.

As a fairly informed Catholic, I see parallels between the experiences of my church and that of our "separated brothers:" the collapse of Christendom in the first-world balanced by the rise of a vibrant third-world Christianity. As part of an overall picture of Christianity, this book provides an essential introduction on its growth and shifts in the last century. However, as a global survey of such a momentous period, it could not provide details on any one individual, country, or movement. I suppose that this could be a criticism of any textbook, no matter how well written: to cover everything essential to the overall picture, the view must remain very high level, and the story has to shift quickly from one topic to the next. Perhaps the worth of such a book can be judged by whether the reader is left wanting to learn more; in that sense, the book worked for me.

A Must-Read for Followers of Christ By Soulfarer Histories of Christianity, while opening the reader’s eyes to fascinating and dramatic developments, are often focused on the Christian church’s movements through Europe and North America. Scott Sunquist takes us to places across the globe that provide evidence of the great diversity and deep spirituality of the church’s emergence across all borders. While some might claim that Christianity is characterized as predominantly white and affluent, Sunquist provides a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic portrait of a church energized more by the work of God’s Spirit than by the forces of politics, nationalism, or ethnic identity. This very accessible book is a must-read for followers of Christ who want to understand their faith as a global, dynamic reality that is neither hindered nor defined by nation-states.
