Profound, honest, and masterfully written—Between Gods forces us to reexamine our beliefs and the extent to which they define us.
Growing up in a tight-knit Christian family, Alison Pick went to church regularly. But as a teenager, she discovered a remarkable family secret: her paternal grandparents fled from the Czech Republic at the start of WWII because they were Jewish. Tragically, other family members who hesitated to emigrate were sent to Auschwitz.
Haunted by the Holocaust, Alison's grandparents established themselves in their new lives as Christians. Not even Alison's father knew of his parents' past until he visited the Jewish cemetery in Prague as an adult. This atmosphere of shame and secrecy haunted Alison's journey into adulthood.
Drowning in a sense of emptiness, she eventually came to realize that her true path forward lay in reclaiming her history and identity as a Jew, and she began attending conversion classes. But the process was far from easy as old wounds were opened, and all of her relationships were tested.

Review “Pick is a marvelous writer, and she vividly recreates the transformation of her relationships…. Her path to conversion—complicated, nearly thwarted—is deeply moving in its culmination. Ultimately, this layered look at identity is a call for claiming one’s true self.” (New York Times Book Review)“Pick’s lovely but unflinching narrative tackles relationships and depression, and many readers will identify with the struggle of loving your family while sometimes not understanding them at all.... It’s an intimate portrait of one woman’s journey to find the faith her grandparents buried with their past.” (Booklist)“Brave and honest, this book offers an intimate portrait of a woman seeking to heal from inherited family trauma and find the beginnings of peace within her own soul. A poignant and powerful memoir of family, religion, love, and healing. ” (Kirkus Reviews)“Thoughtful…. Pick writes her memoir by combining her fight against deep depression with the tenacious sense of hope she maintains in recovering her true identity as a Jew.” (Publishers Weekly)“Pick provides a moving description of her ongoing battle…. Readers interested in memoirs, Judaism, World War II history, or the Holocaust will certainly be captivated by Pick’s engaging and, at times, heart-wrenching narrative.” (Library Journal)“There is…sometimes a document of private life so thrilling in its subjectivity that it shuts you right up. Alison Pick’s Between Gods is such a book, a memoir ambitious as it is inclusive; …a sometimes wincingly honest diary, filled with…Pick’s intelligence and intent to observe her moral possibilities.” (Globe and Mail (Toronto))“Alison Pick’s story of real life–the undeniable fates of the dead, and the hard-won hope of the living-illuminates her powerful new memoir, Between Gods.” (Toronto Star)“A powerful book that has the author reclaiming the heritage her grandparents had abandoned. Readers will not want to put the book down because this memoir is a beautifully woven story of family, partnership, religion, love and reconciliation as she connects her present life to the past.” (WorkingMother.com)

By Schmadrian I attended a reading of 'Between Gods' Ms Pick made earlier on this year in the Niagara area. I hadn't been familiar with her work. So when I got home, I put in requests for her entire oeuvre at the local library. With this memoir, I can declare that I'm up to date and looking forward to her next offering.I'm of two minds about this book. Part of me appreciated the lengths to which she went to tell her tale. But another part of me can't help wonder that it might have made a better novel.Hers is a fascinating journey. Even as a non-Jew, I can appreciate her joy, her frustration, everything that she expresses so well. At times it reminded me of a blog. So long a period of time covered, memories painstakingly brought to the surface, each detail presented with what I received as humility...just as you would blog entries over the same period of time. (I know this because I had a personal blog I posted to for almost six years, during which there were over 3,600 entries.)There were some things that puzzled me. Depression begins the book, and there's a section that refers to it at the end, but it's absent through most of it. For something as powerful as what she fought through, its absence irked me a little. And the sudden mention of her 'best friend', who knows her better than anyone...Some of the attendees at the aforementioned reading saw her husband as a saint. That he put up with a lot of crap. I didn't see it that way, but the way he's there on her journey, right beside her, got me pondering if I could do the same. My final answer was 'No'. So a hearty nod of admiration to him.Although I could not call it a literary tour-de-force (and I doubt that she ever had any intention of writing it as such), all-in-all it was a quite-satisfying read.

About a woman who finds out she is Jewish after she has been brought up Christian. Her trials and tribulations converting to Judaism. Many paternal relatives died in Holocaust. She discussed universal problems of faith and interfaith marriage. Also the theme of survivor guilt wove throughout.

By Laurie@The Baking Bookworm My Review: As soon as I saw this book in a Featured Reads pamphlet at my local library where I work I knew that I wanted to read it. Canadian memoir, set in the beautiful backdrop of Toronto and dealing with such a deep personal crisis? I'm in!I have never read a book by Pick before but I was impressed with her writing and the emotion that she easily conveys to her readers as she struggled with her crisis of faith as well as debilitating depression. Her struggle to find out who she is and where she came from was touching as she pieces together her faith and what it means to her as she looks back on her life with her parents and grandparents as well as the life she wants to build with her husband. The struggles with her faith and depression felt authentic, compelling and, at times, quite touching. I kept having to remind myself that this was a memoir because there was so much happening to the author that it didn't seem possible for her to handle so much all at once. But I found Pick to be inspiring as she fought to discover this history that she recently knew nothing about. I also thought it was very interesting to see how she somehow unconsciously felt Jewish all along. Even though I've never had to deal with such a huge crisis of faith in my life, Pick managed to help me understand her frustration, sense of loss and then the strength she needed in order to stand up for what she ultimately knew was her calling.Another perk to this book was how much I learned about the Jewish faith. Pick was able to provide information regarding Judaism and its history without it negatively influencing the flow of the story. I enjoyed learning about Judaism and I also found it fascinating to see how Alison's father reacted to her embracing their Jewish heritage even though he was raised Christian. This was a powerful, well written book that showcases familial secrets, faith, dealing with depression and family all woven together quite seamlessly. Pick's voice was not overly dramatic or saccharine but compelling and touching.Recommended.My Rating: 3.5 stars** This book review, as well as hundreds more, can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I also share my favourite 'tried and true' recipes.
