ONE OF FREUD'S KEY BOOKS, IMPORTANT FOR HIS LATER WORK By Steven H Propp This book was published in German in 1905, and contains statements of his famous (or infamous, depending on one's view) theories such as "penis envy," "castration complex," and the "Oedipus complex."Here are some representative quotations from the book:"The fact of sexual need in man and animal is expressed in biology by the assumption of a 'sexual instinct.' ... The sexual expression corresponding to hunger not being found colloquially, science uses the expression, 'libido.'""The sexual instinct is probably entirely independent of its object and is not originated by the stimuli proceeding from the object.""Now we are forced to the conclusion that there is indeed something congenital at the basis of perversions, but it is someting which is congenital in all persons; which as a predisposition may fluctuate in intensity, and that it is brought into prominence by influences of life.""The historians of civilization seem to be unanimous in the opinion that such deflection of sexual powers from sexual aims to new aims, a process which merits the name of sublimation, has furnished powerful components for all cultural accomplishments.""One of the first of such pregenital sexual organizations is the oral, or if one will, the cannibalistic. Here the sexual activity is not yet separated from the taking of nourishment and the contrasts within it are not yet differentiated... A second pregenital stage is the sadistic-anal organization.""The infantile manifestations of sexuality not only condition the deviations from the normal sexual life, but also the normal formations of the same.""(I)t is my belief that without taking into account the factor of bisexuality, it will hardly be possible to understand the sexual manifestations of man and woman, which must actually be observed.""One may perhaps hesitate to identify the tender feelings and esteem of the child for his foster-parents with sexual love; I believe, however, that a more thorough psychological investigation will establish this identity beyond all doubt."

This is justified in many respects. His insistence that the joy of an infant suckling its mother’s breasts is sexual satisfaction, rather than merely nutritional satisfaction, reeks of dogmatic sexual obsession. His attempt to explain various personality quirks -- such as “anal retentiveness” -- as a consequence of improper potty training is not merely far-fetched, the same potty experience could supposedly determine directly opposite behavior, and Freud’s conclusions were certainly never verified by longitudinal studies, nor did he have direct access to the potty training his patients experienced.Freud also takes it for granted that revulsion and shame regarding sex are congenital to civilized races, rather than merely being taught. “Savages” have remained primitive because, supposedly, they have no sense of sexual shame or modesty. Sexual perversions develop in people because, due to either sexual precocity or early seduction, they experienced sex before these inhibitions kicked in. He states that “the existence of congenital inversion (homosexuality) can certainly be questioned. . . the more examination . . . will probably show that the direction of the libido was determined by a definite experience of early childhood (p. 14).” Freud points out that this was also the opinion of Havelock Ellis. “The sexual impulse is probably entirely independent of its object and is not originated by the stimuli proceeding from the object (the opposite sex, that is) (p. 17).” So whether a man is sexually attracted to women, other men, children, sheep, or shoes is entirely dependent upon the happenstancial experiences of childhood. This seems improbable to the point of ridiculous; on the other hand, since some men are sexually attracted to children, sheep, and shoes, it seems likely that some incident in their earlier life must be responsible for these grotesque preferences. At the very least it seems not merely probable, but even tritely obvious, that experiences we have as children are going to have a great impact upon how, or whether or not, we mature. This is a simple fact to which many supposedly sophisticated people remain astonishingly obtuse. While it is easy to mock Freud’s ideas when hearing of them second hand, nearly everyone who reads Freud cannot help but be impressed by how clearly and logically he presents his theories. Freud had the influence that he had because he expressed his ideas convincingly. Given the absurd extent to which people of Freud’s time prohibited all discussion, and even seemed to try to deny the existence of, sexual attraction, the fact that Freud focused on the importance of sexual attraction in human life was certainly to his credit. Even when I was growing up nobody ever said the word “sex.” We all learned of sex from dirty jokes and pornography. Pornography in those days was incredibly disgusting. The fact that young people have access to online porn might actually be an improvement. It certainly is no worse. I was personally acquainted with at least two young women who knew nothing whatsoever of sex until they were around twenty, at which point they reacted to the discovery rather hysterically.

Updated but worth a read By Brandy Freud's thoughts on sexuality namely apply to the make psychology (in fact his outdated ideas of women are quite laughable but were unfortunately t be in use for nearly 60 years after publication), but is worth it to read the thoughts and research from over a century ago. Many of the idea poo testbed here are still accurate and even relevant to science which is truly remarkable considering the time. Now,I would recommend following up with a bit of female anatomy if you're a guy.

I am not paid, cajoled and bought my own copy from Amazon.Dr. Perrotta and I have, however, been friends for decades. I started my internship and spent time with him, not long after he entered the private practice of hematology- oncology. He taught me much and rewarded me as I entered the field of orthopedic surgery by noting he thought I was smart enough to be an internist. During medical, school I read much medicine, from Lewis Thomas to Osler so it was flattery. He failed to understand that orthopedics in the seventies was entering s new era so exciting that it seemed to attract smart energized physicians, much as internal medicine had when treatment had moved into scientific pharmacology. Our backgrounds are different. Both from the East Coast, I from generating of New Englanders trained at a college in Rhode Island founded by Baptists and directly descended from Roger Williams. He from New York, trained for years at Jesuit schools and named after St Augustine, although a good Jesuit traces his intellectual curiosity to Aristotle. We share one thing, our love for Bow Ties. I read a version of the chapter on bow ties, but believe the wearers aside from being individualists and eccentric, have no fear of speaking out. Has made for lively discussions often without resolution. He did ask me to write a review. I have not shared this with him/ Memoirs or visitations to the past are increasing daily. Many have insights to share.A Raconteur, Augustine Perrotta honed the short chapters in dialogues with friends, patients, and camp followers. As a raconteur the dialogues were not discussions but displays of knowledge, insight and opinions to be received by the listener. The book itself demonstrates his pedagogical interest, for what were short narratives have often been turned into longer essays, replete with links to current literature.Curiosity is a primary force driving Augie, making his papers interesting, if only to evidence his consuming interest in the causes, meaning, and ethical concepts of many of the issues discussed. I love to use the word,"interesting" as it piques his ire, as he will want a valid or intelligent explanation of why some subject is interesting, which is that it piques our curious nature in life. The explanation of why the little book of memoirs was written with the raconteur's penchant for humor. He likes jokes and worked to learn to deliver them, which he loves to do. His chapter on humor has many jokes, reasons for jokes, and ways to learn best how to tell them. Of equal, importance is the use of humor and jokes in treating patients with severe disease. Laughter is often the best medicine, if in some cases the only medicine.Much of the book has sections that display his love of Osteopathic medicine, patients and his Jesuit background. My Jesuit friends in the distant past were highly educated scholars when I was in graduate school in the humanities.Developing friendship with Jesuit sympathizers educated we who are wasps and educated from youth in the horrors of the inquisition to understand the modern Jesuits. We both share delight in opera, his love rooted n Verdi and Italian operas, mine in less delightful more modern compositions, from Britten on. Papers on his formative education, entry in to the Operatic world of the mid twentieth century are fun reads. His chapter on his interview and experiences in his first years in Chicago mirrors many of these aspects. It reaffirms his strict adherence to the moral values taught at Fordham.. His research into the history, personal as well as general, and into the personality of bow tie wearers has been a bond. These ties have gained wider acceptance now and watching burly NFL linemen sporting ties is rewarding. My sons and grandchildren all sport bow ties.We also share a love of advancements in medicine especially those of the role of genetics, a wildly evolving sub specialty. Angie's chapter on genetics is thorough and useful for the interested lay person as well as the physician trying to understand the current state, so different from that when we were students. I think the book is intended for laity to be able to explain a bit what medical care is. Some of the discussions are difficult, but the personal, struggles and approach to patients with disease is far more meaningful, particularly to a lay person trying to fathom an idiosyncratic Osteopathic hematologist.I enjoyed a grand rounds where an elderly man in the back spoke up to challenge the diagnosis of the proud visiting dignitary. And challenge he did. We who attend or attended grand rounds are pleased to note in an academic center other old folks can sit and learn and share their knowledge. More importantly, challenging the pro for a staged presentations is fun to realize. I, as an aging orthopedist, was faced with a young lady in clinic in the Bhutan while I was on an orthopedic overseas mission, with a painless gangrenous toe. I was unaware of etiology, when my clinic assistant said, it's leprosy. I believed leprosy had been eliminated. My clinic friend noted he had served at the leper hospital which closed a few years before. Knowing that experienced individuals may aid in decision making if they speak up and they can help us all. Open ears are better than closed minds.Long a stalwart leader in the right of life movement, as well as the inalienable right to follow ones own faith leads Augie. He describes a heart rending moment while he attended a young patient while in fellowship. The child had a bleeding diathesis, a result of diphtheria run rampant in an unvaccinated child. Augie continued to minister to Jehovahs Witnesses throughout his career and he and I shared caring for patients who refused transfusion.Shared decision making and the ethical and moral issues involved are complex and well reviewed here. We may disagree with the author on some of the issues, but all readers will profit from the discussion.I encourage you to read this memoir. Much is fun and suitable for reading when time is short. Others are so interesting to drive one to rest idly the topics or strive on. Excelsior! I cannot wait to Siddhartha”s upcoming book on genetics.

The well written stories were intriguing and fast paced. I have rarely been so drawn into a book and fell I am better because I read these stories. The way they were written and intertwined with pracitical and medical information is unique. I am a history buff but learned stories I had not previously known. I am a physician but learned medical information I had forgotten or had never known. All this in the context af stories makes them a permanent part of my knowledge.I have sent copies to medical and literary friends.I really enjoyed and was enriched by these well crafted tales.

A Fun Read of Some Complex Medical Problems By EOC The most interesting part of Dr. Perrotta's book were the personal insights he provided of the medical problems of patients he treated and celebrities that had diseases in his area of expertise. His chapter on "Humor as Medicine" was particularly entertaining and resulted in more than one laugh out loud. He is very adept at explaining medical issues in laymen's terms that are easier to understand.

Review

"What a wonderful book! There is little doubt that you or someone you know is ‘doing’ yoga. Yoga Therapy is a marvelous addition to our understanding of yoga as exercise and as a path to self-transformation and self-realization. This book features renowned experts who clearly and articulately describe the wholeness of this practice, which lifts yoga from our fuzzy ideas of a ‘twisty, bendy way of stretching’ to its rightful place as an opportunity for holistic healing of the body through the mind and of healing of the mind through the body. Yoga makes a difference in our lives. This book artfully articulates just how that happens in many varied pathways, and it’s a delightful gift for anyone who is interested in yoga. You will return to it time and again for understanding and insight into this transformational practice." Carol M. Davis, DPT, EdD, FAPTA, professor emerita in the department of physical therapy at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a JF Barnes myofascial release physical therapist with Polestar Pilates Rehabilitation in Coral Gables, Florida

"This book is a brilliant manifestation that offers an intelligent, insightful, and useful look into the evolution and progression of yoga therapy into the modern medical and mental health treatment plans. Yoga Therapy is an exquisite buffet of exceptional experts sharing a collective wealth of valuable factual information, tastefully explained practical applications, intriguing case studies―all topped with healthy ‘self-inquiry’ desserts! This feast is a fantastic, viable reference for yoga and health professionals to better serve students and clients, but it’s also an easily digestible reference from which anyone can benefit. Enjoy!" Helene Couvrette, E-RYT500, yoga therapist and cofounder of the Montreal International Symposium on Therapeutic Yoga (MISTY)

"Yoga Therapy is a remarkable book that provides insight into the field of yoga therapy and its applications to those working in healthcare, but it’s also great for the consumer who wishes to learn more about the practices of yoga and how those practices might help in self-healing." Chrys Kub, integrative physical therapist and yoga therapist

"As the burgeoning field of yoga therapy continues to gain traction, education is of the upmost priority for those interested in the field. Since yoga encompasses the entirety of human experience, the definitions of what yoga therapy is can be as varied as they are broad. This important new work offers readers an insightful survey of different experts in the field and is a valuable contribution to the ongoing conversation about potential applications of yoga therapy in the modern world." The journey of a naïve, sensitive women growing up in the forties and fifties. Propelled by fear of the unknown, she was forced to make it on her own much too young, but she received help from her loved ones. She learned to pay attention to her intuitiveness and the still, small voice in the middle of the night. Against the horrible tragedy of her parents’ deaths and the early arrival of independence, Pamela must decide who she is and what she wants from life if she is to survive in 1950s America. Confronting the harsh realities of racism, abusive relationships, and raising a child alone, Pamela learns what it means to be a self-reliant black woman and comes to terms with her fears, desires, and, ultimately, herself. "A Heart’s Journey" recounts the emotionally honest journey of how a timid and sensitive girl in the rural south became—through God’s grace and her own determination—a mature woman in control of her own future.

    Review

"This book provides a comprehensive review of current anaesthetic practice… It is well illustrated with uncluttered diagrams and tables together with useful key points highlighted at the end of each chapter. The format in size, layout, and content is aimed at the examination candidate, but the reality is, it is a book for all."- British Journal of Anaesthesia

"This a good start for anyone who is rotating through anesthesia or is beginning a career in anesthesia. It discusses anesthesia in a practical way and does not overwhelm with abstract concerns or facts. Information is provided in a fun way."

Several tables have their contents misaligned making them difficult to read and the opening section has several sections of text repeated (see photos). Not the quality I expected. It is otherwise a well-structured and useful introductory anaesthesia text. If they edit it properly then I would recommend purchasing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a bargain like no other By Amazon Customer This is a wonderful way to get ANYONE to take an interest in art. Very cheaply one can get 24 masterpieces to learn why an artist was famous. Althought it might be nice to have a 1 page bio the fact this is happening at all in remarkable. Most books about painters have less than 10-15 examples of their work and these are zoomable. Blow up (enlarge) the Mona Lisa and you see on the left the road leading to a lower shoreline of a lake. Look to the right and you see a footpath to an upper lake. Considering I saw neither in my 2 visits to the Louvre, this is quite the bargain for less than a hamburger. I got 22 different artists...imagine that..almost 500 paintings from 22 of the world's most well known painters for the price of 1 hardback book....shu

I've just entered the 1st floor of the Louvre and am walking down Apollo Gallery to the first exhibit with my kids Cathy (the dancer) Kristy (the artist) Mary (the athlete) and Junior (trouble!) Seen the classics like "Last Supper" & many paintings with heavy religious themes, the wonderful detail present in paintings like "The Battle of Anghiari" and of course "Mona Lisa"of which Junior asked, "Is that a picture of Mommy?" No, I replied, Mommy looks a lot younger. Moving on to Francisco Goya next...

By Joy Canova This bold new novel by Cassandra Miller takes readers into the heart and mind of a young woman with a tragic history. Sage Whitaker believes she has escaped her sad past, only to discover her own part in its continued presence. Her emotional outbursts may shock the reader, but for Sage they serve as a reflection to self-awareness. Readers will want to stick with her. There is goodness in Sage, even while she bestows kindness to others before learning to care for herself. To give her characters depth and real form, Miller shared some of Sage's raw moments with the reader. However, there is no gratuitous pain here. One must see the full path to appreciate the degree of personal accomplishment Sage attains, just as we discover the love she has always had with her and within her.Thank you, Cassandra Miller, for be willing to walk a treacherous path with your heroine in order to show just how possible hope can be.

Sage, whose is on the journey to become whole after living through devastating physical and mental abuse that follows her from childhood, finds help through the love of her friends and family, some of who are going through life struggles of their own. Sage’s story is told with humor, thoughtfulness, and sometimes brutal honesty. The supporting characters are richly drawn and full of life. I look forward to Cassandra Miller’s next book!

By Maxine This very well written novel follows Sage as she discovers who she is and endures life's hardships, as well as love, along the way. It's an absolute page-turner once you begin reading and you will find this book hard to put down as the author describes in detail, views, moods, and sceneries following through Sage's life events. You find yourself totally immersed and genuinely caring for such a charasmatic young woman, looking foward to learning where her life will taking her.

Do your teens have you confused? Are you unsure were the boundaries are between being a good parent and an invasive busy body? Are you concerned about his or her quickly developing sexuality, but don't know what to say or do? Do you wish kids came with a handbook? Teens are at a very difficult age when they are trying to jump, perhaps too quickly, from childhood to adulthood. Thus, they are looking to find their own identity. At the same time, they are living with changes which are happening to their bodies while also trying to come to terms with how relationships work. It's no wonder there is such a great deal of confusion for both teens and parents. This book was written as a guide to parents to bring better understanding to boundaries: when to set them and when to allow your teen freedom to grow and explore. By working together, parents and teens can create boundaries which give the teen the ability to begin to stand on their own two feet. This book gives examples and will help parents see the world from both sides of the boundary.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This little book packs a punch By Denniger Bolton Being a parent to a teen ought to come with some sort of manual and this little book is about as close as it gets to one. We all want to cultivate a great relationship with our kids. We can't be too permissive but we can't be too controlling either. It's a fine line but seeing each child for the individual they are, and they are all different, helps a lot. Each teen year from 13 to 19 requires us to adapt. Our main job as the author alludes to is to keep our kids safe, by "knowing where they are going" "getting telephone numbers of where they are staying" setting "times for curfew" and so on.This a great little book so don't let the size of it fool you, it's jam packed with just about everything you'll need to have a good relationship with your teenager.

As a parent, I know that I need a book like this in order to be guided. But I am also aware that each kid is different and what works for some may not work with my kids. However, this book has given me so much ideas on how I will be able to make my teen more responsible and survive that confusing stage. It has taught me that since teens have varying problems as they grow up, we need to teach them so that they can learn some acceptable codes and behavior. By setting boundaries, we are guiding them on what's proper and what's not. This will later on help them go through some stages in their lives minus the negative side effects. This is such a helpful book. I will keep this in my library as long as I can still read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting reading! By Lysanne P. If you have teens at home, this book is an interesting reading. It deals with subjects such as setting bounderies for your teen health and safety, dating, sexuality, privacy, responsabilities, keeping track of your teens and much more. The issues are well presented with smart parenting advices that you start applying to your own teens. I especially liked the chapter on responsabilities as this has been an issues with my teenagers a few years ago. I wish I could have had read this book at that time. The last chapter deals with withdrawn teens which is something I think is important in this time and age. Overall, a good reading, straight to the point with teenagers' issues that are real and difficult to deal with as a parent.

Review ... Theologically informative and instructive and yet devotional in approach, it makes a fine contribution to contemporary Christian reflection on a most important institution. ~ Carl R. Trueman (Paul Woolley Professor of Historical Theology and Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) As a woman engaged to be married for the first time (in my mid-50s), who loves classic Christian writings and devotional literature, I have found this book to be a treasure trove. A sweet and timely source of wisdom as I seek to honor Christ in a new season and station of life. ~ Nancy Leigh DeMoss (Author, Revive Our Hearts & radio host, Niles, Michigan) ... This is historical theology at its best. Biblical, practical, wonderfully helpful and really enjoyable. ~ Alistair Begg (Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio) ... a wonderful resource for Christians as they seek to live out their marriages in a way that glorifies God and exalts the Gospel. ~ R. Albert Mohler, Jr. (President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky) I do not know of a more interesting and scholarly book to recommend for a marriage-focused devotional... Buy this book, treasure it on your nightstand, and don't forget to pass it to your sons and daughters as their marriage date approaches. ~ Daniel Montgomery (Lead Pastor, Sojourn Community Church, Louisville, Kentucky ) Good books on marriage are hard to find, but in Held in Honor, Robert Plummer and Matt Haste have taken an expedition through church history to bring back the finest gems of biblical teaching on marriage. Accompanied by biographical sketches and the authors' own commentary, this book will challenge, encourage, convict, and inspire every wife to cherish her marriage and prize her husband. ~ Carolyn Mahaney (Author of Feminine Appeal, Blogger at ) Plummer and Haste's Held in Honor: Wisdom for Your Marriage from Voices of the Past is a collection of writings on marriage from Christian theologians, pastors, and authors. The work is a delight to read on many levels. Those who value church history will appreciate the profound reflections on marriage from some of the greatest Christian minds of the past. Those who seek to understand Scripture's teaching on marriage will be rewarded and those who wish to be challenged to live with greater devotion toward God and his or her spouse will find many practical insights. The authors present a realistic understanding of marriage, highlighting its joys and sorrows, as well as its triumphs and trials. I highly recommend this book. ~ Michael L. Highly recommended! ~ Andreas J. KÓ§stenberger (Founder of Biblical Foundations™ and co-author of God, Marriage & Family and God’s Design for Man & Woman) What a delightful mix of historical wisdom, biblical truth, and real-world application. By Andy Deane In my eight years of marriage I have found great joy in reading to my wife before we go to bed each night. I think I just found my favorite book to read to her! We are half way through reading this book and we have already been tremendously blessed because of it. Each chapter is only two pages long which makes it easy reading each night, even when you are tired. You are presented with a short bio from someone in church history along with a quote they have made about marriage. The quotes themselves have been amazing and helpful to see that people have struggled with the same difficulties in marriage for 2,000 years! It actually makes you feel quite sane :) The authors then present you with a devotional follow up that brings clarity to the quote by directing your eyes to the Scriptures. There are challenging questions posed that if asked to your spouse will lead to deep conversations that bring edification and change in your marriage. This book is fun to read and I find myself recommending it to my friends so that they will be able to experience this blessing as well. I ordered another one to give away to a friend at an upcoming wedding!

Plummer & Matthew D. Haste“Are you ever disappointed in your spouse? Do you fight? Do you disagree about money, sex, or in-laws? What if the very struggles you are facing were addressed by thoughtful Christians hundreds of years ago?” (back cover)This book is very unique. It can be used not only for devotionals, but also as a historical reference. This book is divided into five eras:1. Patristic Era (C. 100-500)2. Medieval Era (C. 500-1400)3. Reformation & Puritan Era (C. 1400-1700)4. Early Evangelical Era (C. 1700-1900)5. Modern Era (C. 1900-Present)Besides reading the Bible and praying, I don’t remember reading any books together with my wife. It is a perfect devotional or short story book for me to read with my wife in the evening. We have been married for almost 17 years, and we have faced all of the following questions:Question: Are you ever disappointed in your spouse?Response: Imitate Christ in Loving Your Spouse (p. 42)We are commanded to “love our neighbors as ourselves”, but when it comes to loving our spouse, we are commanded to “love her as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her.” This is the most difficult love for husbands because it is the kind of love that imitates Christ’s love for His Church that involves dying for her. I believe it is fair to ask our wives if they would do the same (not to die for me—even though I know my wife would be willing to—but to love me as Christ loves His Church).Question: Do you fight?Response: Do Not Fight (p. 30)Question: Do you disagree about in-laws?Response: Should a Man Love His Wife or Parents More? (p. 54)These are just a few samples from the 50 devotionals you and your spouse can read together, and it will take about 15 minutes each evening. Have you heard Geico’s commercial on auto insurance? Their slogan is: “15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance.” I strongly believe that these 15 minutes you spend with your spouse each evening can save your marriage. Because most divorces statement is this “irreconcilable differences” and we are different from day one of creation. Learn these differences from this book and appreciate your spouse is not the same as you are.

Get a copy for your nightstand, read it with your spouse, and ask the Lord to bless your efforts. 'Serial writing course attender', RNA New Writers' Scheme, and script-writer wannabe, I am loving having finally finished my first romantic novel ('Hawaiian Affair'). There's another book called 'Till the Fat Lady Slims' which pops up from time to time from second hand sellers - creating the soft copy and uploading it to Amazon is on the list! It's a self-help book based on 'freedom eating' - body-signals and freedom of choice. Plus there's a always my only paid commission (so far) - good old 'Clive the Camel' - a very short kids' story, broadcast by Buena Vista (Disney) 'Rise and Shine' breakfast show from the early 90's. Considering the file was written about eight computers ago, it's a tall order! My second novel will be based on 'how to find a husband' and it's going to be a script first - with a time-slip plot, partly current day, party 1930's. Valentine's Surprise, my first upload here, is based on an original short story written for QVC UK viewers and blog readers around Feb 14th 2010. Enjoy it! I can also remember a time when I meandered around a jetty, approaching the queue of people, and like Sadie in this novel, tried to pretend I belonged. I've been in the luxury world and really did fit in, and this novel fits into that world too.I can see why the author, Debbie Flint, is a QVC presenter. She did one heck of a job in the presentation of this romantic novel. I think you will like the feisty, single mom, Sadie Turner. I think you will also like Mac, the billionaire playboy. Just remember, if you mix business with pleasure - you may be in for a surprise!Jeannie Walker - Award Winning Author - "Fighting the Devil" - A True Story of Consuming Passion, Deadly Poison, and Murder

I've been on a book withdrawal for a while now and have been in desperate search of a sweet read, so I grabbed this.Like I said, requested for the cover. It looked like Hollywood glamour, could you blame me? It sounded a little like Fifty Shades of Grey but I fought those creeper vibes. After Sadie Turner flies to Monaco for business, she finds herself soon stumbling into a yacht, so she decides to climb aboard and pretend to be a buyer. Soon, she meets the billionaire owner of that very yacht, Mac, and stumbles oh-so-predictably into his arms when attempting to greet him. Sadie lies and says her name is Sam - her middle name - then they bone.Eventually, they meet again. Because, why not? Mac, who fancies himself a playboy with a stone-stiff heart, ala Chuck Bass, is hurt on the inside when she says her name is Sadie. Not Sam. But instead of running away, screaming, when she gives him a snark attitude, he's forced to stick around as they're forced to complete "business deals."The book confused me in more ways than one. One minute, Sadie is pining for Mac, then she's hating him. Also, she's a mom, but you'd never know because her children are rarely mentioned. Mac stats his playboy status more than she probably calls her kids.Throughout this dreadful little novel, they completely "business deals", gaze ruefully at one another from across the room, Sadie expresses hatred over Mac's actions, bone some more, and rant about jeggings.Yeah, so not for me. I'll definitely stick to YA.

Great twist at the end. The characters really came to life. A great first novel my Ms Flint and I look forward eagerly to her next

Nineteen-year-old Annabelle Worthington was born into a life of privilege, but everything changed on an April day in 1912, when the sinking of the Titanic changed her family and her world forever. Finding strength within her grief, Annabelle pours herself into volunteer work, igniting a passion for medicine that would shape the course of her life.

But for Annabelle, first love, and a seemingly idyllic marriage, will soon bring grief caused by the secrets of her husband. Betrayed, and pursued by undeserved scandal, Annabelle flees New York for war-ravaged France, hoping to lose herself in a life of service. There, in the heart of the First World War, in a groundbreaking field hospital run by women, Annabelle finds her true calling, studying medicine and saving lives. When the war ends, Annabelle begins a new life in Paris - now a doctor, a mother, her past almost forgotten... Until a fateful meeting opens her heart to the world she had left behind.

Filled with breathtaking images and historical detail, Danielle Steel's novel introduces one of her most unique and fascinating characters: Annabelle Worthington, a remarkable woman - a good woman - who triumphs against overwhelming odds. More than compelling fiction, her story is a powerful celebration of life, dignity, and courage - and a testament to the human will to survive.

Been there done that. The book is mediocre, at best. The main character, in typical Steel style faces lots of tragedies, but the way the story is written, it just doesn't draw the reader in. She could have made it more interesting as this female character becomes a physician. But...it isn't interesting. As in the Steel's books over the last 5-7 years, since she pumps them out in record time, this one is filled with repetition. Over and over the same words saying the same thing. I read this book in a day and a half. It seems most of her books could qualify for novellas. I wonder if she gets paid by the word??Get this from the library, save your money.

It reminded me of some of her other epics like "Rememberance" and "Echos." Annabelle Worthington was an incredibly captivating character. This book is not at all the typical romance that DS does. In fact, the main character does not even have a functional love interest for the whole novel! Annabelle was a strong and independent woman that did what few women could at the time. Become a doctor. When I returned this book to the library today, I actually had to say good-bye to Annabelle in my head. Yes, some of the language is repetative, oh well. Ms. Steel created an amazing character. This was a very special book.

A Good Woman by Danielle Steele By Amazon Customer When I first started to read this book, I said to my self, "this is just like another one of her books." I kept reading and the more I read the more I enjoyed it. This is one of her better books, she hit just about every subject imaginable, from death, to marrying a gay man to working in a war zone, to going to med school, being raped and coming around full circle to love again. I would recommend this book

Terrific Book for All Ages By Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage Thank you BookLook for this review copy.Years ago when my children were 10, 4, 2 and brand new, we sold our house in mid-November. We planned to stay in a motel for a couple of weeks until the sellers moved out of the house we were buying. We'd be in our new home by Thanksgiving... or so we thought. The sellers wouldn't sign the papers until the first week of December then refused to move out until December 26th!We lived and homeschooled for seven weeks in a motel during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Everything I used to make Christmas was in storage. I borrowed a tabletop tree, went to Hobby Lobby for a few decorations for the room, and bought our first Christmas book. It was a season of watching the Home and Garden and Food channels and not being able to make or do anything. ~grin~ It was hard at the time, but it is a sweet memory, and new traditions arose from it.One of my children's favorite Christmas traditions is reading Christmas stories. Each year they look forward to receiving a new picture book. It's been many years since we started this tradition. My oldest is now 24 and my youngest 14. I recently asked the kids if they want to continue the tradition. I was met with a resounding, "Yes!" The Legend of the Christmas Cookie will be this year's additon to our growing Christmas storybook library.Richard Cowdrey captured the spirit of Dandi Daley's nostalgic Christmas story with charming illustrations of a simpler time. It is set during the Depression time, and shows a way that one woman and her son found to show love in a tangible way during a very difficult time in their life. The focus on giving even when we are ourselves are in need is a beautiful one. That's a message we all need in these uncertain times.I recommend this book for a young boy or girl in your life... or, as in our case, a houseful of teens.

I absolutely love books that share important messages with children because they really seem to stick with kids. When important messages and life lessons are shared though a book kids seem to remember them much better than just being told why or why we don't do things by mom and dad.The Legend of the Christmas Cookie is a story about a boy named Jack who's family is barely scraping by. One day Jack sees his mom making cookies but is only disappointed when he learns they are for the poor people at church and he cannot have any. His mother saves one cookie and gives it to the little boy on Christmas morning. Suddenly there's a knock at the door and it's someone needing some food and so Jack takes this opportunity to give them his only cookie. It is through that cookie that he is able to share about Jesus and tell about the Christmas story. The Legend of the Christmas Cookie is beautifully written and the illustrations throughout the book are equally beautiful. My kids enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it!Disclosure: I received product(s) for free, in exchange for my honest review. I only recommend products I've used personally, and believe will be good fit for consumers. If you found my review helpful, please remember to click "yes" below.

Coming from a family of bakers, I love everything about this big and colorful Christmas book. Reading it made me look forward to that time, which is coming up soon, when the winds will turn cold and my kitchen will hold the aromas of cookies baking for the Holidays. The story is told through Jack, whose father has traveled to the West to find work (I assume this is during the time of the Great Depression). Jack returns home one cold day to find his mother baking cookies for the needy in their church.Through her telling of the history of the cookies, Jack learns about the tradition from his father's homeland of pressing the cookie dough into wooden cutouts to form the shapes which can be used to tell the story of Jesus' birth.Jack is thrilled to receive one of the cookies as a Christmas gift but you will have to read the book to see what he does with it. ;)The story by Dandi Daley Mackall is beautifully done, simple enough to keep the attention of young children but there is enough of a plot that older kids will enjoy it, too. The illustrations looked familiar and I was pleased to see they are by Richard Cowdrey, whose illustrations in The Legend of the Candy Cane were equally beautiful.I highly recommend this book to give to children in your world this year for Christmas.Oh, not only does the book contain the history of the cookies Mom is baking but also the recipe. You could use a shortbread mold I expect, should you not be from Southern Germany or Austria and have a few wooden molds sitting around. This book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of review but the opinions are my own.
